NYC 5th Ave Apple Store Glass Cube Attacked with Green Lights by Activists
greenpeace.org — More than 60 activists took to the streets of New York to shine green lights on Apple's iconic 5th Avenue store, to protest the company's use of toxic chemicals in its hardware products. Greenpeace elves danced around the store and worked their magic to turn Apple's store green.

- amboy00, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Environmental groups and activists have targeted Apple stores in the past. Unfortunately, while it tends to get Apples attention, activists have no issue disrupting the work of retail employees who have no control of Apple policy.
It's like asking the part-time Gap employee to stop making pants overseas even though his job is only to fold them.- breakbeat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15They didn't even make it that green.
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39They're only targeting Apple because of the brand's name recognition. They understand that a similar effort against Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc would not get any traction because their brands aren't as sexy or mediagenic. Greenpeace long ago abandoned science for splashy media stunts and fear-mongering press releases.
- Avili, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4Nice :D Apple has been getting away with a lot, they've given themselves as the anti-Microsoft, but they're essentially the same only with a much better PR team.
Glad to hear that we're finally holding the company accountable, even though they pretty much down played the whole IPod sweatshops. - raynar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Do the green lights run on Linux?
- gonephishin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@Avili
Please stop. You must not have followed the situation very closely at all. Apple has been very forward about the iPod factory conditions. http://www.apple.com/hotnews/ipodreport/
Try finding that sort of accountability in other major companies. They hit it head on and hired a third party auditor instead of sweeping it under the rug. Get your facts straight. - wm2010russ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8apple shoulda just shone some red lights on themselves then called the resulting blend of green and red "Christmas Decorations"
- AKAImBatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@wm2010russ
Dang, you beat me to it. I had the exact same thought. Green + Red == Christmas decorations that impress shoppers. "Green"peace would have ended up leaving "Red" with anger. :P - DoctaStooge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, they must be doing a lot of work to get those pics and vids on the net, seeing as how Macs "just work better" for web publishing.
/sarcasm
Note: this was not meant as a cheap shot to Apple or Macs, i think they make good products. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You're right Amboy,
But this is Greenpeace we are talking about. These guys have turned into anti-corporate propoganda spouting kids. Have you ever been to a green peace rally? Hardly anyone is over 30, most look like hippies, and most can't even go into depth in what they're talking about. Half the time they're not even for the environment anymore. They're just wildly against big corporations for random reasons.
They don't realize that big corporations like GE, GM, Walmart, and so forth provide many jobs to Americans. Which teen hasn't worked at a major franchise or fast food store to start off? Its all these huge companies combined that give America is growth spurts and powerful economy. Without them we'd literally be like any other non descriptive nation.
IF anything, just watch the Pen and Teller episode about them.
- kallgaier, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz............
- ckr4282, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8The hippies have gone too far this time!
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Toxic chemicals, like what? Our ipods are poisoned!
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33i hope those lights don't run on batteries.
- rotarychainsaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17nah they run on the holders sense of self satisfaction.
- squeevey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was the thought I had.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hippies :)
- mnmacgeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1frem001 - HAHAHAHAHAHA! Great point!
- dark1152, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14***** Greenpeace. They love being assholes but never actually DO anything.
- Avili, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I'm wagering that you have no clue what greenpeace is.
- 16777216, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ Avili
I'm wagering that neither do you.
...tool
- Ksilebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'll care about toxic chemicals in the devices that make my life easier when we are no longer dependent on fossil fuels.
- DesireCampbell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9*****, I hate GreenPeace. Not that I'm overly fond of Apple, but '*****' GreenPeace...'
- Wulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yet another example of what could have been activism turned into a media stunt instead by the fine folks at Greenpeace. Penn and teller did a great episode of ***** on hype-oriented environmentalist crowd, which can be found on Google video. Had some interesting info on Greenpeace:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4480559399263937213&q=penn+environmentalism- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favorite part was the petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide (water)
- screwzluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3uuummm... To me, it seems like they were doing Apple a favor. I mean, it didn't make the cube look bad and probably drew plenty of attention. "Thanks for decorating our store for the holidays, Greenpeace. You're A OK in my book." - Apple ;)
- xeno439, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always thought Jobs was a hippy (ok a greedy hippy, but a hippy nonetheless). Why don't they find someone else who gives less of a ***** than Jobs to attack.
- 16777216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps Bill slipped them some green to green Apple?
- PyroOnASwing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2seriously, who thought of this idea?
"i know how we'll stick it to 'um! well shine green lights on the glass building, that'll get our point across!!" - Mobiletek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nobody should give this attention. They are ***** idiots....get a life
- DOGPARTY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"More than 60 activists"
more than 60 morons fall for inaccurate crap more like - jhonizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wish red peace showed up at the same time, then santa could show up.
green peace has a website so obviously they use computers and servers....do they really think all that stuff's green. they're just like PETA hippieocrites. - 16777216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm all for getting rid as much toxic crap out of every thing possible.
That being said... Greenpeace is a ***** propaganda political ***** sucking bandwagon with no concern for the environment.
Don't believe me? Do about five minutes of research and it will become abundantly clear. - The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now it looks like the Borg Cube.
- CoffeeandTV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Greenpeace is almost as worthless as PETA.
Meh~ - richardpotato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did they really just shine lights on a big glass cube and hope it would do something? Somebody better go tell them what “transparent” means.
- pepsiguy94, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just wonder what was powering all those green lights. If they were batteries they had better recycled them. They were not very bright so the might have run on their self esteem. Its not the companies fault that people through away their product, they should go after the companies buying from Apple. They are the ones upgrading and throwing out the old equipment.
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool. I like green apples. And the store looked really pretty all lit up like that.
- jpb0104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no *****. what a bunch of losers. bet half of them have ipods.
- joe122370, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1morons.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Right, I'm sure Apple uses some bizarre amount of harmful chemicals. Target somebody worthwhile. I think the setup to this little event went something like this:
Greenpeacer #1: Dude, I heard that, like, Apple, like, uses chemicals in their computers.
Greenpeacer #2: Man, that's bogus.
#1: I know. We should, like, do something about it.
#2: Yeah, but I'm way too stoned
#1: What if we just go shine a bunch of lights at that big glass box on 5th avenue?
#2: Can they be green?
#1: Sure.
#2: I'm in, dude.
Hippy/attention whore is a dangerous combination.
Looking over this post, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be dugg down into oblivion. Oh well. - wheresaldo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Apple is a bad company that feeds from the ignorance of their customers, lies about their product, brainwash people with their TV ads, and promote "brand" extremism and fundamentalism. Don't buy any Apple products this holidays and don't buy any media from iTunes, this is the way we "the people" have power over companies that do wrong like Apple.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Astroturf?
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You need more than unbacked claims and buzzwords to form an argument. Otherwise, you're just as guilty of trying to brainwash people.
And FWIW, I'm not a fan of Apple. I'm just less of a fan of people like you. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just what are all the "lies" about their products? And brainwashing? HOW DARE THEY ADVERTISE THEIR GOODS AND/OR SERVICES, PRESENTING THEM IN AN APPEALING MANNER!!!!!! Such a thing has NEVER been done in the HISTORY of advertising, NEVER!!!
- 16777216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is that you Bill?
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can get behind wanting to lessen the human impact on the environment, but this just seems like a silly publicity stunt. Also, this bit doesn't make sense to me:
"As last year's gifts get tossed to make way for shiny new Apples, they will likely find their way to developing countries, where children of all ages will unwrap and unleash the toxic chemicals within."
I was always under the impression that most of the polluting done by computers was due to byproducts of the production phase. If the computer's already built, it's not going to continue polluting, right?
Anyway, just a piss-poor article and "protest" all around. They didn't do a very good job of selling their cause, so I'm not buying.- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean you *are* buying :)
- bluejet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um...every electronic device ever was made using toxic chemicals. Ever try making plastic or PCBs or solder? Yeah, if they give off some toxin when they are salvaged, that's bad... How about doing what the oil companies and pharmaceutical companies are doing so well...lobby congress to get the process outlawed. Greenpeace and Peta are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas these days. All the while congress is killing environmental laws like you'd kill roaches.
How about this...Get on daytime TV and news stations showing industrial alternatives to petroleum, coal and dioxins. And showing what our government is not doing to reform environmental issues. The Bush administration is doing enough this term to keep Greenpeace busy for the next 50 years. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Friends, there is a much more serious threat to our environment than Apple. This offender leeches thousands of tons of sulphur and smoke into the atmosphere every year. It ruins natural habitats, killing countless millions of plants and animals, turning their habitats into barren wastelands. Who are these gross murderers, you ask? They only go by one name...
Volcano - ohsnap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1isn't Bill Gates a big Greenpeace supporter?
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm Green Peace, shouldn't they be out protecting whales from ships?!?
- tfaz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there any environmental organization that's as irrelevant as Greenpeace? All these attacks directed at Apple are done so with the purpose of getting their name in the press. When you look at these pictures, Greenpeace comes off as exactly what they are: a bunch of trust-fund hippies who have nothing better to do than buy a bunch of pretty green spotlights for their childish publicity stunt. Douches.
- sd12013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I walked by and saw that, I'd totally think it was something Apple did to be "festive" !!!
"ooooh, pretty lights."
