- estvir, on 04/16/2008, -9/+58Not only do Mac users have to wait, but $279? Wow..
- TehProphet, on 04/16/2008, -5/+46Thats awesome. I wish I would have bought a mac so i could pay an extra $80 for a video card that was high end when it came out last year.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -3/+36This is what happens when you buy Apple. People rag on about MS being closed software. With Apple you get BOTH closed software and hardware. Imagine the world full of macs. Ughh...
- TherealObadiah, on 04/16/2008, -0/+31Everybody outside of Apple pays $149 for an 8800GT (256) or $199 for a 8800GT (512). Talk about getting hosed, on a dated card!
- DiggLive, on 04/16/2008, -4/+34The joys of being able to control what hardware works with your OS.
- HotGore, on 04/16/2008, -10/+40Wow talk about slow up take of technology.
- gothsquirrel, on 04/16/2008, -7/+27Why? what use does a mac user really need a 8800 for ?
- Stevethegreat, on 04/16/2008, -9/+29Apple Hardware is a joke, they should put off this stuff because they're committing fraud over and over again. $279 is the price of 9800GTX, the NEW gen card by nVidia, I guess the rest 100 bucks that Apple charges for nVidia's hardware goes in their pockets.
I still can't get how people fall for that. If I was to be treated that bad from a company even if their OS was the best thing in the universe I would try to stay as far away as possible from their products. I don't like to be a victim of fixed prices, I live in a free market - free society and those socialistic measures are repulsive to me. In a truly free market -where people act according their best interests and not their base desires- such companies should have been long being buried..... - nobelief, on 04/16/2008, -3/+20$279!? You can get a superclocked EVGA 8800GT for less than $200
- PueSi, on 04/16/2008, -1/+17Please don't talk like that.
- punchinelli, on 04/16/2008, -3/+19Extra $80? Depending on brand, now it's an extra $120.....
- Meccabilly, on 04/16/2008, -3/+19They're getting Spore this year! And umm.... they've got Sims 2.... and ummm..... Quake 4!
Really tho, arn't mac owners to busy with 'fun stuff' like making DVDs of home movies and Photo Albums to play games. - Shogi, on 04/16/2008, -5/+19$279? Really? That's about how much I paid after rebate for my overclocked 8800GTS last August.
Nice competitive pricing. - jakem1, on 04/16/2008, -3/+17Welcome to 2007.
- gazzaDJ, on 04/16/2008, -0/+12Meh, the game is still running on Windows if you use bootcamp, which at the end of the day makes it no different to a Dell or a HP or a custom built computer running Windows. Mac OS X is what really makes a Mac what it is, the hardware (bar EFI) is the same as any other computer.
- mizzack, on 04/16/2008, -2/+13Sharpie, you're wrong. All 8800GT cards use the G92. You're thinking of the 8800GTS which has two gens (the G80 and the G92.)
- threemagic, on 04/16/2008, -0/+9no
- sharpie05, on 04/16/2008, -8/+17Sorry, but its the G92(2nd revision) 8800GT that is holding its own. The one for the mac pro is the crappy version - the one that doesnt share the same chipset as the 9800s.
Youre making it painfully obvious that youre just here to be an *****. - orgazmo, on 04/16/2008, -2/+11He's a mac user
- Spuy767, on 04/16/2008, -0/+9Intel's server boards, while having 4 PCIe slots, are incompatible with Scalable Link Interface.
- scthk, on 04/16/2008, -2/+10Currently the 8800 is the only GPU that supports the NVIDEA cuda processor for the desktop mac, the macbook pro works too. This allows me to write in C/C++ any mathematical calculation for doing real engineering work. I can do a two-dimensional Fourier Transform 100 times faster than anything from Intel or AMD.
BTW, I work for NASA, and yes, I'm on Digg. - Lunarbunny, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8Who the hell is digging mizzack down? Sharpie05 is wrong, I personally owned an 8800GTS 640 (G80) then used EVGA's step-up when the 512 (G92) version came out. The GT came out as the first card to use G92, and did not exist in a G80 incarnation. GTS rev. 1 (320/640), GTX, and Ultra are all based on G80, while GS, GT, and GTS rev. 2 (512) are all based on the G92.
- PueSi, on 04/16/2008, -3/+11Since you can install Windows in it, you can play the same games. The only thing that was holding them back was the Video Card
- BloKKem, on 04/16/2008, -1/+9That number could apply to the date and the price.
- estvir, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9Mac users are suckers and will do buy up anything glorious Jobs releases.
- Spuy767, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9Apple had to essentially buy an nVidia Part, and then retrofit it with an EFI compatible ROM due to nVidia's lack of interest in supporting a new standard which will eventually, albiet begrudgingly thanks to the likes of Microsoft, become the defacto standard.
- Deathshead1941, on 04/16/2008, -7/+14Another way to make a buck on overpriced hardware for "Trendy douchebags"
- drunkwally, on 04/16/2008, -1/+8PC Guy wins on value for money.
In Australia the card is $369 AUD. That's $341 USD. For PC, the 8800 GT's are $250 AUD. Thanks for nothing Steve. - jakem1, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9This has nothing to do woth socialism. It's just capitalist greed.
- alwilson, on 04/16/2008, -2/+8As a Mac user, I'm kind of embarrassed.
- renegadeafk, on 04/16/2008, -1/+7Correct, the 8800GTS is the only one that had the "g80" core (the 320 mb and the 640mb versions had this core and don't perform as well as the g92 gts and the gt, or even the 9600gt in most cases) the 8800GT has always been g92, and the second revision of the GTS is g92.
That aside, 279 is a RIDICULOUS price for that card, you can get them for under 200 on newegg, talk about a ripoff. - badenglishihave, on 04/16/2008, -3/+9TEH PHOTOSHOPZ!!!
- passedoutghost, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6Well done, you have actually made me shudder. Not even 2 girls 1 cup could do that.
- championchap, on 04/16/2008, -4/+10Any guesses on when they'll get ahold of the 9800 GX2?
I'd hate to even imagine the price tag they'd be putting on that. - jakem1, on 04/16/2008, -1/+72010?
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -2/+7uses CPU not GPU
- Zippo, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5Any type of media editing, which is kind of what the higher-end Macs are geared towards.
This is a little sad, though. There really ought to more competitive pricing and compatibility with video cards for the Mac Pro. I'm a big Mac fan, but I'll admit that when it comes to choice in video cards, the PC definitely wins. - shubjero, on 04/16/2008, -4/+9$279 for a first gen 8800GT?... um....
- gazzaDJ, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6Yes, but for that you are much better off with a QuadroFX card, as they are made for rendering.
- passedoutghost, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6Good thing too, imagine the price markup if they did have SLi
- sjmulder, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5Dugg down because I want to know how many diggs it takes to reach the core of the earth.
- manitoba98xp, on 04/16/2008, -4/+9There are uses for graphics cards BESIDES video games, believe it or not. Video rendering, in particular.
- Spuy767, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5Because in September of 2006, The Quad Core Mac Pro was the fastest machine that you could buy, ANYWHERE, because Intel hadn't released the 3.0 GHz Clovertown part to any OEMs or retailers other than Apple, and Even with the Fastest XEON available, that machine was still 1500$ less than a similarly configured Dell with a slower processor. I bought two of them to use in the server room, one to run Delphi, and the other to run our website.
- nobelief, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6you're part of Digg, *****
- estvir, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6Talk about stifling growth. I imagine Moore's Law would cease to be valid.
It'd be horrible if Apple had the majority, thank goodness the snake oil salesmen known as Steve Jobs is happy with his mindless, elitist drones. - cypherz, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4Mac users are all "Trendy douchebags" huh? Why be offensive? I'm neither trendy nor a douchebag. I use OS X because it's a well groomed UNIX-like OS. Since I develop software for UNIX systems, Macs are a good fit for me.
You're welcome to believe that Macs are overpriced. But why do you feel the need to insult people you don't know? I doubt very seriously you'd talk that in person. I guess because you think you're anonymous online, you can be an ass with impunity. - sharpie05, on 04/16/2008, -3/+7Sorry, but i think my PC runs it better than your mac :/
Not a mac hater, but my drivers are better. - superal1394, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4Um, 8 Xeon processors? 32 gigs of ECC Ram? 4 TB's of HD space? maybe?
- jp12380, on 04/16/2008, -0/+4No it is not, for the second time you have shown your complete ignorance!!!
You need to be dugg down to the core of the earth, you are so sure about a subject you are completely wrong in!! You are the guy they make manager, you are Michael Scott.
The 8800GT has no SECOND version.
What is worse is people are digging you up because they don't know any better.
The 8800GTS is what has 2 versions, there is only 1 version of the 8800GT and it has the g92 chipset. - arcsbite, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5or you can just flash a PC 8800GT with the Mac firmware and save yourself about a 100 bucks
