- TannerC, on 10/10/2007, -6/+68I have a television which allows me to watch all of my favorite shows for free. Duh.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36Yea, but NBC:
http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/005471.html - redrighthand, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29Ahem.. Torrent
- kinseyincanada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Bitorrent is your friend.
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14No Mac support, no sale. (referring to Amazon Unbox). Bittorrent, here we come!!
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12No, the contracts limit distribution to the US, even if its free. Also, all iTunes videos have DRM, so posting them for you to download wouldn't work.
- andydumi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10True. There is a difference between free premieres, and free seasons.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11It's like a free trial. This is nothing new. It gets you hooked, then you pay for additional episodes. It's not a personal attack on NBC.
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10What he said ^
Just torrent them and get them in good quality with no restrictions. That's how I caught up on Heroes and Lost when I didn't start watching until the first seasons were damn near finished. - Ocelot13, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11iTorrent, uTorrent, we all bittorrent
- flagrant, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11The NBC shows are on Amazon Unbox, as I'm sure has been said in comments above. I just feel compelled to add that their software is complete *****, Windows only, doesn't work, and isn't worth the bandwidth it takes to download.
- fani, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You can either use Tivo to download several NBC pilots early or download it for free from Amazon unbox.
It sucks that its not on iTunes, but thats not the end of the world.
iTunes and iPods are one form of DRM. Download it from Amazon on another form of DRM.
Bottomline is you can watch the damn show...
And if nothing, there's always torrents. - eatrains, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yeah, because FOX and CBS are only available on cable and nowhere else.
- genericface, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7As you both (myself included) are (effectively) paying to write comments on Digg. Of course, you have to assume that your time can be easily converted into wages--pay me for an extra 10 minutes of work since I'm not watching commercials tonight! No, I suspect the real opportunity cost of watching commercials is eating a small bag of Doritos.
- plbland, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9shhhhhh
- SouthsideIrish, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Which I can put on my Mac and iPod, right? Not!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I predict that eventually NBC Universal will come crawling back to Apple. Unbox, Netflix and all of the other Internet download services are jokes compared to mighty iTunes. It's like comparing the Zune to the iPod family.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6If your time is free, then yes. Otherwise you are paying time for watching commercials, and waiting for the program to be broadcasted. Although DVRs solve some of this, and some of the non-commercial ones offer the ability to automatically skip advertisements.
- andrewmp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dude, the Canadian networks air all of the big shows from the US!
- AaronSaund, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Amazon Unbox. Free NBC premieres. Who gives a *****, use BitTorrent.
- bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's going to be pretty nice quality video too, if the preview screen shots of the Office are any indication. Good for them (finally).
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Hey that's great! But they just lost about 80% of their digital audience.
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah the Videos are extremely bloated, 800MBs for a single show WTF, I don't notice a huge quality jump from 300MB iTunes shows either. Plus they don't play well in Parallels (Like 15FPS) which makes them useless to me on my mac.
- Commodus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Actually, they probably still have their DRM attached, and there are probably legal issues with exporting the shows to other countries (it would likely be considered a rebroadcast). So they're still likely US-only.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm an iPhone toting Mac guy so I'm fairly partial to iTunes. However as much as I wanted to like Apple TV, I just couldn't convince myself to buy it so I went and built myself a Windows Vista Media Center. Now I've got OTA HD, no cable bill and Blockbuster fills in the gaps. It's a wonderful solution, all for under $400. The problem is I can't get CBS and for some unknown reason I like Survivor. I know, I know.
Anyway, I bit the bullet and tried this Amazon Unbox thing. My first impressions? The software and stand-alone player are lousy and none of it works on a Mac. On top of all this, it looks like season passes are going to be priced higher than iTunes as well. That said the website itself was easy enough to use and the solution as a whole does integrate with Windows Media Center quite nicely. I was able to browse Amazon's site, add stuff to my "media library" from my MacBook and my media center happily downloaded everything for me remotely and was ready to roll.
I picked up the pilot of NBC's JourneyMan since it was free. It was pretty enjoyable and I'll likely tune in for future episodes. The download weighed in at a hefty 800mb and the picture quality was decent on my 37" LCD TV. All things considered, if you're one of 0.5% of the population that uses a Media Center in your living room, this really isn't a terrible solution for the odd TV episode you might have missed or the ones you can't get at all. - Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Thats the problem with ALL DRM. It only works on supported devices.
The same criticism should be given to itunes. It ONLY works with the ipods.
DRM = Bad
Apple DRM = Just as bad as non-apple DRM - SouthsideIrish, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yes, I can download it, but I can't play it on my computer or put it on my iPod. It is the number 1 music player, and you can't put their shows on it. They can go and ***** themselves because I am not going to watch their shows, and I am not going to torrent them either/
- christor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm no fan of DRM. But Apple's DRM allows playback on Windows machines, Macs, and iPods. (And the music can be burned to CDs.) It's better than just about any other DRM I've seen, as it has more liberal playback policies. In fact, those playback policies are one of the reasons NBC themselves cited when they jumped ship. They wanted it tightened up.
Upshot - I'm not disagreeing that DRM is bad, just with your last sentence that asserts that Apple's is "just as bad" as any other DRM. That just isn't so. - zman8479, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I don't quite get it. One min NBC is bitching about wanting to charge $3.99 at iTunes and now is giving it away for free. Eh?
- happytron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2DVD > iTunes still. The only step forward at this point is bittorrent.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I thought it would have been funny on Futurama to show that the Simpsons was still on the air after 1000 seasons just with different voice actors.
- digitaloxygen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's all about using RSS feeds in your bit torrent client to automatically download your favourite shows! I live in BC (western) Canada and I can often watch episodes before they even start on TV because they get ripped from the east coast broadcast several hours ahead :D
- gandhii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i wish you guys would at least put a little effort in keeping these things under the radar
- sphetr2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why does NBC hate scrubs?
- thomasoa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I tried to watch Big Bang Theory. Worst laugh track ever. Turned it off before the opening credits.
- yabos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah you're right we can't even get these in Canada. It's pretty lame because all these shows are on Canadian channels as well as the US ones that we get.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Funny, I thought you were talking about buying drugs for a minute there. Television, the new crack.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4NBC and HULU.COM can suck themselves. Windows support only, they will be charging for the service eventually, the quality is going to be ***** even by iTunes standards, and linux and OS X users can forget about it.
Again, I repeat. NBC and HULU.COM can suck themselves.
If it cant play on your PC, and it cant be loaded to your iPod then ***** them and their DRM *****. - keithmcbride, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2no
- GuinnessGoblin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2NBC still has some great show (i.e. The Office) no matter if the lawyers are ***** or not.
- Kdurrty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Um...torrents?
- duzytata, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2http://cristgaming.com/pirate.swf
- stubadub, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, they've had Studio 60 as the only show they've offered on the service. Call me when they start offering 30 Rock and The Office.
- gsa5383, on 11/27/2007, -0/+1it makes sence, it is like giving a virtual free sample. if you like the taste you will buy more and maybe even the whole the box. the thing i am supprised by is that they are able to sell the show when some post them for free on their own website or myspace
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2DRM = BAD
Apple DRM = Slightly Better then Bad
Considering apple supports Windows and Mac its alot better then MS DRM which only supports Windows and leaves 10% of their Potential user-base without an option. - thestressor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Why stop there? Buy the whole season of Caveman...err...the first two episodes. That will show NBC your anger.
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Ahem ... laws.
- ariza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was just in a BLOCKBUSTER over the weekend and noticed that NBC was offering their Fall lineup episodes as a free DVD rentals -
HAHA what a step backwards - wonder how much all those DVDs cost to print - not to mention the waste created - tomato3017, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Until they start giving away 720p content, I will continue to use bittorrent. Don't want me to use bittorrent? Give me a reason other then "laws" which are mean't to be broken
- eliah, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The CW's Gossip Girl is also available free in iTunes: http://urltea.com/1j67?itunes-link
