- dyranios2, on 10/10/2007, -14/+228Shoddy work from apple, shame the only tweaking to the software they did was to remove features rather then actually change stuff that didn't belong there.
Don't worry Calendar, little guy we're working on it! - ClarkLab, on 10/18/2007, -6/+151you been rockin it with the protective film on it? thats pretty sweet.
- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+129Similar to a thing in front row from the WWDC leopard build, if you didn't have any photos front row would say "Your Apple TV doesn't contain any photos" or something like that.
- FrankT, on 10/10/2007, -15/+126that's so funny :-)
- nicksource, on 10/10/2007, -8/+92That's really poor, I would of expected Apple to of tested it a little more. Makes the product look real tacky, sort of thing a Chinese knock-off would do.
- mrmacky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+84Well it's obvious that they were going to reuse the iPhone OS. I just find it kind of funny that they didn't do some kind of search & replace for the word iPhone.
- mrmacky, on 10/10/2007, -6/+78No no no, submit bug report to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
- Crazymaniacc, on 10/10/2007, -4/+67That's a lot of apples.
- philsharp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+63Did you bother reading the description? What is there to *not* agree with?
- eq2s, on 10/10/2007, -4/+59Perhaps they are oranges?
- goodoldharris, on 10/10/2007, -4/+59Why would they get rid of the iCal functionality? That's totally ***** up. The phone functionality alone should be enough to position the products differently. Wake up, Apple. The iPod touch could the PDA that a lot of Mac owners are waiting for. But you're ***** it up.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+49same thing.
- MadOtaku, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43I wouldn't compare the two.
- davepascoe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+38no, that's why he entered the wrong password :)
- pixelbud, on 10/10/2007, -2/+37Submit bug report to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html
- fatadamblog, on 10/10/2007, -7/+38Someones getting Lazy! Apple no offense but this proves the ipod touch is an iphone minus the phone.
- kc0re, on 10/10/2007, -5/+34:%s/iPhone/iPod/g
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32it's not the reuse of the code that's funny. it's forgetting to change something.
- GeneralGore, on 10/24/2007, -13/+40Maybe because the iTouch is just an overpriced iPhone without a phone?
- imikedaman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29They ported it to the same hardware. Impressive.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Unless it's coded by 5-year-old, the functions and variables shouldn't matter. The user will never see them anyway.
You *never* hardcode text output in the program -- you keep it as a separate resource so you can send it off to translators and such, and that kind of search-and-replace can be done in Notepad. - digginghacker, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24Did anyone else notice that Steve kept referring to it as an iPhone in the Apple event?
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20no, thats just a normal phone bought anytime within the last decade.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22its the same platform, they have just taken out a tiny chunk of hardware.
you realise this isnt the same OSX that you run on your desktop, the same way that windows mobile isnt really just windows xp - cbuddha42, on 10/10/2007, -7/+22Great, then why didn't they just reuse the calendar code? Say you wanted to use it as a pda; the device would serve your purposes much better with reused code. People are mad because apple took the time to unnecessarily limit how we can use the device. This is just an instance of how they were lazy and reused where it suited them and changed where it didn't rather than reusing where it suited the customer and changed where it didn't. You can't deny that there was no good reason from the customers point of view for the calender change and no good reason not to make this change. I understand you can't please the entire customer base at once (for instance some people like the flash memory while many wanted a hard disk for more music and videos. Bottom line: the ipod touch would have been a better device without changes such as the calender one, yet apple spent time changing that and not this.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14A PDA just needs to store your Personal Data. It doesn't NEED a phone or internet access.
- justineatworld, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15even his name is troll
- supermansuper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Yeah, coz that would be like comparing apples to ... oh wait..
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19I think it's kind of interesting that they can re-use the same code on several different platforms w/only relatively minor tweaking. If the OS is that portable, they've really done a good job.
- 0mega, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Lemons actually, but i understand the confusion :D
- Takuro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Even if there were references to functions and variables with the term "iphone" in them, replacing "iphone" with "ipodtouch" would still work as long as every occurrence is replaced.
Eg: (function iphonekeyboard) (reference to iphonekeyboard) becomes (function ipodtouchkeyboard) (reference to ipodtouchkeyboard)
So in a large sense, nothing gets broken. - msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -14/+26Alright, I hate to be an Apple apologist in light of an actual screw up, but if the worst part of the iPod touch is that they missed changing a text field in the UI, while the software still functions fine, I can't really label it "shoddy" or "shameful". Code reuse is standard practice in industry, errors do happen.
- sych0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13uh, you needed proof that it was just a crippled iphone? Look at the thing.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Or... just fix it in an update... that might make more sense.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11You didn't click on the link did you.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ever heard this phrase? "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts"
- mooseblaster, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12You know, you've also partially proved that you were stupid enough to forget your password... :P
- devinjohnson2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11***** you, cockweasel.
- adamchristopher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10you think those quotations are "really necessary"?
- LiquidSword, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15Hows your black/dark colours looking on the screen?
Really want to get one of these bad boys when they're out in the UK but this screen business is really put a dampener on it. - thefalloftrey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9you are just an angry dick
- esotericguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8BLOCKED!
- FunkyChicken, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Is that a Truck full of lemons in the picture? Kind of poetic, don't you think? :-)
- pixelbud, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11We should try submitting this as a bug report to Apple. I'm sure we let them know they will fix it. Then you won't have to see it again if you lock yourself out of your phone...grr...pod.
- MadOtaku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's a joke man, lighten up. In truth, they probably wouldn't use bash shell scripts (with sed) to do it either. probably awk or perl. So your example isn't much better.
- afx1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7no
- tycsteel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Deffinatly not photoshopped i just did it on my touch and the same thing Iphone is disabled lol that is soo great
- tabaczka, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7probably because nobody at apple is dumb enough to lock themselves out of their ipod...
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10They didn't want to cannibalize their iPhone sales by making the touch have too many iPhone features.
For consumers it sucks but from a business standpoint it makes perfect sense. Apple would rather you buy an iPhone than a touch. - pixelbud, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Its what happens when you work *too* fast to push something out. Most likely because Steve Jobs is pissed at the cell phone industry lol. ( http://crunchgear.com/2007/09/09/is-steve-jobs-sick-of-the-cell-phone-industry-already/ )
