- burstaneurysm, on 11/20/2007, -5/+351Inaccurate. This wasn't a dead pixel, it was a pixel wide line down the display. @ 1440x900 resolution, that's 900 dead pixels.
- atibb, on 11/20/2007, -54/+243I have a regular macbook, Apple's Superdrive firmware 2.1 broke my Superdrive to all hell, as it has done to others online. Apple basically just told me to suck it, its not their problem when i just asked for a way to flash back to firmware 2.0 since even they had pulled the 2.1 from the software update cycle.
- otatop, on 11/20/2007, -20/+184What horrible brand of PCs were you buying that died on you every year? I've had a home PC since 1990, and none of them have died, they just eventually were too outdated and needed to be replaced.
- Vodkablast, on 11/20/2007, -7/+116too bad they wanted $755 to replace my macbook screen
- mulling, on 11/20/2007, -22/+118Meanwhile, I'm on my third faulty battery. Since the last one was replaced in a recall, the warranty only lasted 90 days. So six months later the battery fails, and I'm told I have to buy the next one myself. So far Apple has yet to sell me a battery that lasts more than six months. My power supply and fan were also defective.
For every happy Apple support story I'm fairly certain you'll find two unhappy ones. - bigjimslade, on 11/20/2007, -10/+93I have a dead pixel on my brand new 24" iMac. Apple's take: "that's normal."
- negativefx, on 11/20/2007, -21/+101Yeah, no *****. Nice story clak. I still have a celeron 400mhz that runs just fine. You buyin your PCs from walmart or what? Quit pissing on them and they might last longer. Also, nothing takes a bigger beating than my Dell Precision M70 laptop...the case is cracked from being dropped and thrown around, the usb ports are ***** from flight attendants smacking my laptop with their fat asses while i have devices plugged in, etc... the laptop is over 2.5 years old and still works perfectly fine. You are a retard. "This is why Apple turns ordinary [fanboys] into [douchebags]. SMUG.
- ariez84, on 11/20/2007, -16/+95Bull ***** *****.
I've dealt with Applecare before. This guy is either lying or somehow affiliated with apple somehow.
And obviously this comment would get dugged down. - Proctor, on 11/20/2007, -8/+80Oh damn, time to intentionally make a dead pixel in my iBook.
- LoudNoise, on 11/20/2007, -5/+63Thanks for making the PC/Linux world look like a bunch of ***** heads.
- Cockdiesel, on 11/20/2007, -5/+55You shouldn't need to pay more to fix something that the companies firmware destroyed. You sir are an idiot.
- apple1, on 11/20/2007, -1/+42It's cheaper for Apple to give him a MacBook Pro than go to the trouble of finding a display for a laptop that is no longer in production. And they probably do this once a year to get dugg and make the fanboys happy they have AppleCare.
- richardiscool, on 11/20/2007, -2/+43"There's 2 dead pixels on my brand new Macbook"
"Deal with it." - RobertJoseph17, on 11/20/2007, -8/+49Yeah, you must not know how to take care of a computer very well. I've had a Compaq Presario running for over 8 years and I haven't had any problems with it.
- ryodoan, on 11/20/2007, -1/+38In my room right now I have 4 PCs, One I built from parts I ordered, an eMachine (bottom of the barrel PC) that I have had for 4 years now without any problems its now my server computer, an 800 Mhz Celeron that I got for free that runs fine, and finally a 400 mhz eMachine that was also free that is probably close to 8 years old that has its original 3.2 GB hard drive in it.
All these are working fine and two of them are the worst computer brand I know. So unless you just got incredibly unlucky, or thought your CD-rom tray was a cup holder then I say your full of it. - screwzluse, on 11/20/2007, -10/+44I bought a MacBook Pro July '06. Last month, I noticed my comp was randomly turning off when not plugged in. I flipped it over and noticed that the battery was swelling. This is a known problem that I've seen all over their own forums. When I called them about it, they told me that they weren't sure they could do anything because I wasn't under warranty anymore. They put me on the phone with one of the tech guys. I explained the problem and said "I've heard of this issue before." Immediately, he said "no, Apple does not have that issue. It is an issue for you but not for us." It was extremely condescending and inappropriate. In the end, after getting a lecture about how I should have taken the AppleCare package, they allowed me to send it back. I got it back pretty quick with a new battery, hopefully the ISSUE won't pop up again.
It's that kind of attitude that really bothers me about Apple. For the amount of good deeds Apple performs for customers, there's probably an equal amount or greater of negative deeds. - Baelorn, on 11/20/2007, -5/+38I've kept my mother's PC running for 7 years with regular hardware updates and even an OS upgrade. Total cost? Under 2k. I'm not sure what the above problem was but I doubt it had anything to do with how PCs work and think it had more to do with the user.
- Thomaschaaf, on 11/20/2007, -7/+39When you buy a Mac you already pay for 3 replacement laptops ;)
- Saku, on 11/20/2007, -4/+36My first build macbook pro core duo, had a screen issue, THREE times! It was repaired each time. I never was offered a machine, not a loaner, only to BUY a new one and receive a full refund after mine was fixed. I really don't believe this post at all. I have 5 macs, each has applecare, the store knows me well, and not a chance of this. This is total B.S.
- underburn, on 11/20/2007, -6/+35I can tell you for a fact that this either did not happen, or he threw a fit for it to happen. This is not a common practice within apple.
- Cloudime, on 11/20/2007, -4/+31But did you get it for free?
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -125/+150When I bought my G5 four years ago, I kept expecting it to die every year. After all, every PC I had up that point had died within one to two years. I kept expecting it and expecting it, kicking myself for not buying AppleCare, but here I am, four years later, going on five and I haven't had a single hardware problem. NOT ONE.
So when people have disputes with me about the price of Apple products, I tell them, yeah, I paid 3,000 for my Mac, but I have no idea when it's going to die (People still have G3s and G4s) and Apple hasn't released an upgrade yet that has made my system obsolete. If anything, Leopard runs faster than Tiger did. But let's say it dies this year. Stretch that 3,000 out over the life of my product and that's $600 a year. Is that so bad when I was used to paying so much more in time and money on PCs every year? I don't think so.
And with my new iMac, I have Windows XP running in boot camp too. This is why Apple turns ordinary people in fanboys. QUALITY. - inactive, on 11/20/2007, -2/+27This is not meant to bash apple, as I'm generally a fan (not a fanboy, though). I've on my second laptop, first was a g4 powerbook, now I have a MBP. On both the laptops the superdrive has failed. I've had keyboard issue, latch issues, and a problem with a dead RAM slot. No hardware is immune to failure.
- betterth, on 11/20/2007, -10/+34Oh shut the ***** up Microsoft doesn't even make computers you retarded fanboy. Most likely Apple doesn't stock the part anymore so the only way to decently honor the warranty was to replace it with a comparable model from the current generation. In fact, his AppleCare warranty probably denoted this exact turn of events. Wow Apple, you followed your contract, amazing, where can I sign up to worship you?
I'm so sick of this Apple *****. No other company locks users down more than Apple. No one abuses "planned obsolescence" worse than Apple. They're the worst for control and you all still worship them. - directive0, on 11/20/2007, -2/+26And yet somehow you managed to pull it off, DesuKN!
- NJPENSO, on 11/20/2007, -10/+34I can't understand you with all that apple ***** in your mouth.
You sound like one of those guys on the commercials and it makes me sick. This article isnt even about how well the computers run, so why did you bring it up anyways? - capran, on 11/20/2007, -4/+27You'll never see Microsoft do something like this for the simple reason that....Microsoft does not make personal computers.
On the other hand, they do make gaming consoles. Has anyone ever heard of Microsoft replacing an old Xbox with a 360? - shakin, on 11/20/2007, -0/+23Why on Earth should a computer slow down of its own accord? Maybe if you install more demanding software it will run slower, but computers don't just slow down because they've been around for a long time.
- belthesar, on 11/20/2007, -4/+26Quality parts make a quality computer. When you talk of OEM computers from 6 or 7 years ago, most of them do last a long time. Then again, most OEM manufacturers were using good parts back then, and I believe the standard of parts as a whole was just a lot better when I look at it historically.
Now, in the day in age of the $5-600 Best Buy Special, they do use cheap parts. Proprietary parts for their proprietary cases. Lots of people are happy with their Dell XPS line of computers, as well as any of the elite lines of computers purchased from OEM manufacturers. It's just a different level of quality when you're spending that much money.
The reason that Apple Fanboys exist due to the quality of hardware is because when purchasing a computer from Apple you're not given any other option. Their hardware at a quality level, their software at a quality level. It's a product designed to be long lasting, powerful, and, all in all, a good thing. And you pay through the nose for it. Just like every other OEM manufacturer's top-dollar models. - du4l1ty, on 11/20/2007, -7/+28Same I cannot imagine what it would take to mess a computer up that much. I mean seriously even when I was 6 or so I couldn't mess up my computer that bad for it to die within a year...
- cawpin, on 11/20/2007, -0/+20Absolutely. It doesn't matter if it's under a hardware warranty. Apple's software broke it.
- JustinPM, on 11/20/2007, -1/+20Screen on! Apply directly to the pixel! Screen on! Apply directly to the pixel!
- pu-z, on 11/20/2007, -2/+20I have a similar case going with Apple. My GFs iBook G4 broke, with the well documentet logic board failure. I live in Scandinavia, we have kick-ass consumer laws here and design errors like that one is covered up to five (5) years from date of the products arrival to you (not even from sale). So I called Apple, and they agree, just have the error verified at an authorized repair point and they will fix (or replace) the 4 years plus iBook for free. One snag, I don't have the original recipt... "Oh, that's no problem! Let me have the iBook serial number, and I'll send it to our financial department and they will email the reciept to you". I have a reason to be satisfied, I think...
- 0firefly0, on 11/20/2007, -0/+17I think you're just a moron.
- pu-z, on 11/20/2007, -1/+18Acer? The Acers at work suck ass. Constantly breaking, catching fire, PSU dies left and right, proprietary drivers required for the motherboard and lots of small issues.
- shotgunefx, on 11/20/2007, -3/+20My DEC 386sx-16 laptop still works LOL.
I've also got four celeron boxes (and a ppro) that still work. 3 of them daily for almost a decade now. Outside of a power supply or two, no worries.
Now on the other hand, every single person I know who had an ipod had them die at least once within a year. - ianarcher, on 11/20/2007, -5/+22Don't believe the hype. I have had a recent terrible experience with Apple regarding a damaged Macbook they sold me (and refused to accept responsibility for). I worked my way up the ladder on the tech support center (as far up as they will allow) and was pretty much told to screw off. I will never recommend an Apple based on the customer service, which is pretty much as ***** as any other computer company's.
- karmakanic, on 11/20/2007, -0/+17It is, actually. If you read the warranties on most larger LCD displays they very carefully state a minimum number of dead pixels before they're required to replace it (range is from 20 to 100, depending upon the manufacturer). In other words, they expect there to be a few, but not a lot. I have a Dell 30", and it has about 10 dead pixels. I forget what the limit is, but I'm sure that 10 is well below it.
Life in the Big City, man... - mannypdesign, on 11/20/2007, -2/+18What's a bonar?
- mentor972, on 11/20/2007, -27/+43Wow, they really told you to suck it. That wasn't very nice... oh wait... they didn't really say that.
- uptown, on 11/20/2007, -4/+20I brought in a busted FM remote last week ... asked one of the sales assistants which line I should stand in to get it looked at (it was still under warranty). He told me to come with him, went over to the shelf, ripped open a box, handed me a new one, and took my busted one. THAT'S service.
- shamam, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- EXreaction, on 11/20/2007, -1/+17I still have a 386 that works, don't know what you were doing to destroy your PC, but you must have been doing something pretty nasty or used some pretty nasty hardware. I don't know how you could stand to use a 5 year old computer as your main PC either, even if it costed $10,000 originally.
- spiralspirit, on 11/20/2007, -0/+15no, that's just common sense for apple. A $2500 laptop is worth the cost of repair. A FM remote that probably doesn't cost them $15 to have stocked in the store isn't worth their time to have someone look at it.
- troye, on 11/20/2007, -3/+18No, he didn't.
- darienphoenix, on 11/20/2007, -2/+17What's irritating is the fact that they deny known issues, as if you're an idiot.
- Dragular, on 11/20/2007, -0/+14Something that happens to your penos.
- EXreaction, on 11/20/2007, -0/+13If it was a single dead pixel, you probably wouldn't ever notice it.
I have at least 2 or 3 dead pixels in my laptop display, probably more. It was a month or so before I noticed the first dead pixel, and I have been noticing a few here and there every few months. Looking for those dead pixels take a little bit even though I know the general location of them. Though, my screen has a 1680x1050 resolution and it is 15.4", so the pixels are quite tiny.. - darienphoenix, on 11/20/2007, -14/+27I had the 'Macbook Whine' - I called and asked if it was a problem covered under warranty, they said it was and that I could send it in for replacement within 2 weeks. The motherboard was replaced, and I received the system back, only to have the exact same noise. It was 'fixed' again (another week), and then after STILL having the problem, I complained and received a replacement new system for my trouble.
All well and good, except THE NEW SYSTEM HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I called again, and after playing phone tag for two weeks, they decided to analyse the noise using expensive audio equipment, in order to see if it was 'within specifications' (even though they'd already told me it was). After another two weeks, they told me it was within spec, that the macbook was fine.
Total time wasted - about 2 months. All because they told me the problem WAS a problem, was covered by warranty, and then proceeded to ***** me over while not fixing it, until they finally decided they couldn't be stuffed anymore, and told me to get over it.
Apple may have some customer service at times, but they have some ***** customer service too. - JEWestbrookJR, on 11/20/2007, -6/+19You see, that's funny... because I just got my first macbook last week. And it seems to have Mac OS X Leopard, and within leopard runs Ubuntu 7.10 and windows xp pro. And not your standard virtual machine, it doesn't have a conversion process so it runs just as smooth as if it was the only OS on the computer.... does your pc do that? didn't think so.
I love linux, and on occasion I like windows, but if these elitists could get their heads out of their asses, they would see that apple products offer the benefits of all three operating systems. I used to be anti-apple, but I eat my words now. -
