- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Apparently, filing it under "Apple" wasn't enough of a hint for you?
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17It really isn't about coding extremely complex applications, rather a contest for helper and utility apps, something that can be developed fast enough. Otherwise it would be an enormus task regarding time and crew involved.
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I think the desktop game concept is awsome, at least as a concept.
- kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It's been a short, strange trip. There are some fantastic ideas on there, particularly these:
DoppelGang (Multiseat): http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=532
Unbound (ZUI): http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=550
touchBASE (a widget bar of sorts): http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=5596#p5596
A few others seem destined to win, if forum interest is any indicator:
Passback (IM w/ eyecandy): http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=247
Recipe Manager (Recipe Manager interfacing with Amazon): http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=118
BookRoom (ebook reader with style): http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=544
And my ideas (a network aware, extensible AI; a powerful personal database; LOCAL .MAC EMULATION) are nowhere to be seen in the Top 24 :D
(Note that there are more excellent ideas on there than I could possibly fit in a Digg post) - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Indeed.
I find thinking up good ideas *much* harder than coding them. - Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Calling it a dream app doesn't mean we need anything at all. The idea of being a dream app is that someone has dreamt it up and wants it to be a reality.
Its like having a dream job, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to have that job. - desiaa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Okay, does anybody else think that these are hardly "dream apps"? I mean lets be honest here, a desktop game? Stickies? The only app that has some real potential is the virtual newspaper....and even that is just a cool idea, not a "dream app". I'm disappointed.
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10above link is NSFW
- Glenn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I wouldn't buy either of these 3 applications, but netherless they are some pretty cool, well thought out ideas. Looking forward to the coming week and half.
- bubba., on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Agreed, these should be called MySnoozerApps. Stickies? RSS Aggregator? Do we really need any more of either of these lame applications? Come on folks.
- sebzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm a bit dissapointed with all these ideas actually.. They are interesting ideas, but I don't consider any of them "dream apps"..
- jejones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Long ago there was a demo for OS-9/68000 on the Sharp X68000 in which you were at the controls of a hovercraft traveling along the surface of an asteroid, while commands flew by; to run one, you blasted it.
Of course, the grandfather of them all was the Adventure Shell: attack blah.c with vi... - realpolitik, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9If you guys were expecting something on the scale of Photoshop, that's absurd.
For me, an app like Herald (RSS reader that is laid out as a newspaper) is exactly what I've been awaiting for a very long time. - thatgirlismine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I actually think Desktop Wars is a terrible idea.
"control armies of troops via mouse controls, voice commands, or even by shaking your motion-sensing laptop, and play several modes including capture the base and skirmish. The real fun of course begins when Desktop Wars is played on the network, and you attempt to take over your friends’ desktops."
Could you be any more vague or wishywashy than that? What are your troops exactly. Where are they rendered? on the desktop? Voice commands? Shaking? Networkability?
Perhaps I'm being pessimistic, but... actually no I don't think I'm being pessimistic. - maram500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Few things have caught my eye to date. Desktop Wars is a grand idea...but the problem is trying to do a network "war" between Macs and PCs. I am intrigued by the idea, however, and can not wait for this thing to be released. I would pay up to $15 USD for it--so long as there are possibilities like different difficulties, maybe different levels of technology, and whatever. Maybe someone could take this idea and, say, make Internet Explorer the hole in the wall of your desktop--oh, wait! It already IS!
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I actually quite surprised how interesting the first three finalists ideas are. "Desktop Wars" sounds like a lot of fun, and "Stick it" would have real world use for all.
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. Many people have a hard time understanding that the phrase "My Dream App" could mean something other than the first meaning that popped into their head: "THAT's NOT MY DREAM APP, WTF, WHO WOULD USE THAT, blah blah".
- msbeckman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh man! I submitted a idea just like stick it the first day of the contest that allowed you to post stickies anywhere!! why o why couldnt they have chose mine :(
- mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=741
John, might this be worth something? would love your opinion. This was my submission. - misterjangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's a good idea. Caps Lock wouldn't work for me because I actually do use that key all the time. But the idea is cool.
- spaemo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Out of the three Herald is the best. I think everybody agrees on that.
- HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want that Desktop Wars NOW!!!
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Dear sensible person,
I hereby invite you to uncheck the apple category in your user preferences.
Sincerly, myheaditches. - Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just spent 30 minutes reading all the links you provided. Holy cow. All great ideas, a GREAT read.
- mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can you give me some feedback? my app is a productivity app so to speak, crossed with a simple commandline/ scripting environment tied to meta data and the caps key
- leucippus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2there are 21 spots left (3+21=24 total)
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"Would have been nice to let everyone know these are mac apps in the title or description..."
Are people on Digg really that stupid??? Open your god damn eyes, and then you will see that is was filed under "Apple". Is reading really too much to ask of you? People like you give teh intarnets a bad name. No wonder all those Repubicans in power in the U.S. government think that teh intarnets are evil--they take cues from people like you!!! - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its true I cannot possibly beleive that these are 3 of the best ideas.
- imackid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with you, although it is highly unlikely that they would port in to windows *shudders*, It would be fun to destroy my friend's windows deskop
- schneb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, one of my ideas is a toolset of irritating missing items in OSX as well as integrated app killers. You can choose what is on or what is off, as well as tweaking what needs tweaking without harming the OS operation.
I agree, there needs to be refinement in what is already there, and it seems like Apple is concentrating on "adding on" rather than "honing" the OS. - imackid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Safari is able to do that also, just click on the Bookmarks icon and make a new folder in "Bookmarks Bar" then just drag any link in there and walla!
- fredgarvin1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't Herald just an app that does the same thing as www.netvibes.com? I think I'd rather have the web page than a stand-alone app.
...and why does Digg hate Opera? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Excuse me for browsing under the View All category.
Kids like you portstacker are the reason sensible people are leaving sites like digg and slashdot for more mature discussion. - peterweisz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does the fact that the first three finalists' names begin with A,A & B indicate that they have all been selected and are being rolled out alphabetically at a rate of 3 per day in order to extend the process and generate more page views? Or have the immutable laws of proabability somehow been suspended?
I agree that these winning apps do not represent the be-all end-all of software development. Nevertheless, I do find them dreamworthy. Many people do actually dream of transcendent Post-it Notes and destroying a co-worker's desktop. My two entries, ShuffleCut and HearSay, are likewise somewhat less than earthshaking. But, were they actually to be built, they both would represent dreams fulfilled to me. - Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sure they are Apple apps, but if any of them are really good ideas that people want, someone can code a nix ro windows version. Why limit your view of the world to only your small domain, look at what other options are out there.
- schneb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I have three app ideas, but knowing what they had chosen before, I kept it small to utility size. I would rather not share them here (sorry) because if they are not chosen, I would like to pass them on to a developer. One of them should be a sure-fire hit and is badly needed. But we will see. Still 23 slots to fill yet.
- lazlonger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Ok so not really dream apps but cool ideas anyway.
I already have a sort of getto setup for the web/newspaper idea. I just put all the sites I read in the morning over coffee into one folder called "My Morning Tabs" in my Firefox bookmark toolbar. In the morning I choose "open in Tabs" for the whole folder and BAM, my newspaper. Digg, NY Times, Gmail, Calendar, MySpace profile, David Byrne's radio station etc....these are the things I love Firefox for.... - dreamer0802, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Here's one for ya then: 'SkyBox' - http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=85
Mockups:
1. http://www.leucippus.org/SkyBox_small.jpg
2. http://www.leucippus.org/SkyBox_2_small.jpg
3. http://www.leucippus.org/SkyBox_game_small.jpg - mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I hope they pick mine. lol. GooRoo (meta browser)
- Jonh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Hey if you guys think you could come up with something worth you may put a finger in your eye. Everything has been done, what we need now is refining the existing.
There was indeed good ideas in between bad ones on this forum. Currently the three nominees are not the best so far. - kryszpin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4true, nothing special :(
- erniebert, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4The three apps they profile are lame, lamer and lamest. A new version of sticky notes? This is a dream app? This is pathetic. YARA (yet another rss aggregator) = LAME.
- tripdragon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0*yawn*
Wake me when something productive comes along.. I need more art creation apps. More smarter programming apps.. less rss news readers.. FAr less to do apps - def1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4No one cares about your spam.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Pimp my comments!
- mojojojo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2jeeze
- Jonh, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2My idea was quickly buried, but i still think it's good one. Much interesting stuff passed there, as more *****, the usual.
What seems to draw most of the crowd attention is not really what I call a dream app, mostly just community publicity. So here is a little out of community push to myself.
http://mydreamapp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=145 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5Would have been nice to let everyone know these are mac apps in the title or description...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+5Haha, if this is the best they got from users, I bet the folks involved are regretting signing up. Free ideas they may be but crappy ones is what they really are.
What a joke.

What is Digg?
