My Dream App Semifinals, and Kevin's Judging!
mydreamapp.com — The semifinals are here, with only 9 apps remaining. This round's guest judges include Kevin Rose, Leo Laporte, David Pogue (NYT), Jason Snell, Peter Cohen (Macworld), Shawn King (Your Mac Life) and Rik Myslewski (MacAddcit). Plus, all voters get Voice Candy for free. Who'll remain?

- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -57/+9Does anyone really care yet? Post some news when everything is said and done. This is almost as bad as American Idol
Awaits to be dugg down...- OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20People care, as several different apps were already posted here.
Plus, those who had their applications eliminated now can put their votes into something else.
On a different note, digg saved atmosphere. - hoyaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13It IS American Idol . . . for the Mac. If you dn't use a Mac, you don't care.
If you do, why not vote? You get a piec of cool free software (normally retailing between $15-$30) for every round.
What's the downside? - ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8sadly, I vote and I don't own a Mac. That means I get to use NONE of the free software given away when you vote. :( I have a 733Mhz(me thinks) G4 at work though. It's only running OSx 10.3, though, so I doubt it will run any of the proposed 'Dream Apps.' While I realize that Digg saved Atmosphere last week, I've ALWAYS wanted a program like that.
I propose that someone setup a My Dream App for Windows or Linux so that I can actually benefit in some way. Although, I suppose that My Dream App for Linux is....well....use Linux and then make whatever it is you want, sucka!
I need to get back to writing my English paper, guys. Stop making me look at Digg. That comment is meant for the guy with the gun pointed at my head. - spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2Pathetic...
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14if you put "awaits to be dugg down" in your comment, then why post your comment at all? might as well just shut the ***** up!
- realpolitik, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4@ascalonx
There is a very high probability that the winning apps will be ported to Windows. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Everyone... vote for

it's SUPPOSED to be like American Idol... you dumb f*ck.
- OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20People care, as several different apps were already posted here.
- kybrown17, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10Blossom should be the winner hands down
- birch25, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10atmosphere looks amazing to me. way cooler than a little icon in the menubar.
- MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7do you guys actually consider an app's functionality and usability when voting?
So what if some pretty weather brightens up my desktop!? My computer IS right next to a window!
Not that I don't think its a crappy idea, but I favor Ground Control becuase I would actually use it and buy it. It would def. help my productivity. Blossom and Atmosphere are cool, but in the end, they are just toys. - Mannon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, there will be three winners, so I guess there will be something for everybody :)
- Halleck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Although I agree with Microwaved, sadly I feel that at this point a vote for Ground Control is like a vote for Nader.
Plus, the latest round of criticism has got me thinking... the reason I started using dashboard was because it was cool, novel, and useful. The reason I stopped was because it was slow-to-load and a memory hog (partially my fault for having too many widgets) that wound up slowing me down rather than speeding me up. The concept for Ground Control is nice, but can a homebrew dashboard replacement really solve the speed issues that made me stop using apple's original? The extreme code optimization you'd need to pull something like this off properly doesn't seem to be high on the list for the contestant or the developers.
Still, I say it's worth a shot. Considering the other items on the ballot, Ground Control is my #2 choice- the first being Whistler. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No, Whistler!!
- mozzep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hijack looks awesome. everytime I think something is better I realize how much time I spend with on forums, most of which are not pleasing to the eye.
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I could care less about some of the apps, but for some reason I really want hijack to win. If its properly done (and if its possible) I'm definitely getting it :D
- ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Actually, the phrase is "couldn't care less." Emphasis on the n't. If you "could care less" about something, then you're obviously not caring the least amount you possibly could, right? Sorry if I'm patronizing. Pronounced 'pat-ron-ize-ing,' not 'pate-ron-ize-ing.' Damnit...there I go again.
- Chewy_95118, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Umm can someone say Grammar Nazi? You read the book the Grouchy Grammarian didn't you?
- ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I said I was sorry. You try writing for my English instructor and not turn out as a 'Grammar Nazi.' Although, in actuality, that's not a grammar issue, that's a correctness issue. There I go again...Bah!
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10ascalonx,
u r my hero - ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Thank you. I always wished I could be someones hero. Although, I always envisioned it being for winning the Nobel Prize or something, not for correcting people's word usage on a comment forum. Nevertheless, thanks.
And, in order to maintain my hero status, I will not correct you on your use of single characters to represent 3 letter words. NOOOO!!! Will it ever end?? - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Personally I think digg should have some kind of automated, pre-post ascalonx-bot.
There are far too many little mistakes that are little enough to slip past most people, but big enough to be incredibly frustrating to the perfectionists amongst us.
Hmmm, maybe that should have been one of the "Dream App" entries, some kind of real time ascalonx-bot.
- camwest, on 10/12/2007, -22/+12Hey guys,
I am one of the semi-finalists Cameron, my App is atmosphere, check out the judges comments here: http://mydreamapp.com/live/ click my name to see what everyone has to say.
Basically my app idea is awesome, it's very simple and slick and it's going to be easy to implement.
Kevin Rose put it best:
"Fun idea, i’d use it."- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Dude, I like the idea and all, hell I voted for it.
I have no idea why people are digging you down... maybe it's those damn sunglasses in your photo... They have just got to go! Just... Damn! - MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2nice plug...
not. - ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@Nuked Water -
This suit is NOT BLACK!
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Dude, I like the idea and all, hell I voted for it.
- aviazn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Am I the only one not seeing Blossom show up in the vote? I click on it on the left but Ground Control pops up. When I scroll through them with next/previous it does the same thing--Ground Control shows up in Blossom's place.
- dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I don't own a Mac, but I would love to see Atmosphere and Blossom done. Everything else I saw there didn't interest me at all, but I'd love to have those two apps.
Someone on the Beryl team needs to get cracking on those so I can run them under Linux ;) - Daiken, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1OMG, 3/4 of the ideas I voted for were in the last 3 spots. People vote for Desktop wars!! It'd be so awesome and it's actually possible. Atmosphere will probably win but the other ideas besides desktop wars and atmosphere just about suck and are not really possible. Cook book? Pfft, don't need a program to do it, and therefore no one is going to use it. Portal? There are already so many programs that do same thing. Hijack? Pfft, so many different constantly changing forum softwares, will never work unless you have like super devoted developers and LOTS of them. The plant idea is okay, but kind of stupid, and the interface/plant just about blows. Get things done is okay but very simple and easy to make. Whistler can work but it's super tough to make a program that creates music that people will actually like (regardless of if you whistle the tune). The desktop thing is fine but boring. So there you have it, make sure you vote for atleast atmosphere and desktop wars!
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Cookbook and Hijack, Kevin. You know what to do.
- phantom_mullet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2http://www.potionfactory.com/voicecandy/VoiceCandy_MyDreamApp.dmg
Link to download free copy of VoiceCandy! Enjoy!- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7or you could just vote
seriously, why not contribute a single vote, and get the app that way
why do people post these dl links? It only turns software companies off of offering free stuff like this - shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a jerk... I mean, come on, the freebies are supposed to make people vote. So get in there, make good choices, and make a difference!
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7or you could just vote
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6so voting was delayed for kevin rose, and he barely says anything about anything?
sheesh.
by the way, my pics: atmosphere, cookbook, and hijack, in that order.
good luck, guys- camwest, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2thanks zforrester I really appreciate it, Kevin was pretty brief on most of his comments but I kind of like that, he is very to the point, the whole idea of mac shareware apps is that they are simple and focused, just like Kevin's comments.
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ camwest
wowww.... Supreme fanboyism *shame, shame*
- juu801, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I can see myself trying some of these... and then never using them again. They all sound nice but I can't see myself using any of them very often.
- sp3ccylad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Whistler's the killer for me. I genuinely want to see people who consider themselves "non-musicians" being enabled to make full use of Garageband.
And as a musician, I want to hack the living bejeebus out of it.
C'mon, Whistler!- dane, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Did you even read the judge's comments? You know, where they said a program that Whistler had been made? 5 years ago? You might wanna check that out before voting for a program that already exists. I think one of the judges even provides a link.
You're welcome. - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I realize David Pogue thought he was doing everybody a favor, but the app he linked to is a) old (©1999) b) very expensive and c) not available as a demo. So we have only David's word on it and the website's word that the app does the same stuff or better as Whistler. I can't even tell by looking over the site if the app is OS X compatible or not. If it's an OS9 app, it won't run on any Macintels. There is still a need for this app.
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I should state that there is still a need for *Whistler*. My wording above is unintentionally misleading.
Not sure why I'm being dugg down, though. - Halleck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really hope Whistler wins too... I don't care if it's been done before a while ago with monophonic MIDI. If it turns out not to be polyphonic as planned (the feasibility of which is still under debate), the elegance of this implementation still trumps all. Even if you strip away the fancier features being considered, you're left with a musical sketchpad that will be damn useful to untrained folks such as myself and professional composers alike.
- sp3ccylad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, the link that was provided was for a program that has not been developed for the Mac since the demise of OS 9.
So the idea, in a klutzy form, is available for Windaz. So what? I want a good idea, in a non klutzy form, developed for the Mac in a way that makes use of all the best features of the platform.
That's the potential for Whistler.
- dane, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Did you even read the judge's comments? You know, where they said a program that Whistler had been made? 5 years ago? You might wanna check that out before voting for a program that already exists. I think one of the judges even provides a link.
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds like a good idea. Pity I have no mac.
- ct2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Did Leo Laporte have a bad day when he wrote his comments? - He seems very negative towards most of the entries.....
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Leo is upset that "netcast" isn't taking the world by storm. :)
- baxterthaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Leo pretty much eats everyone's lunch with his comments. I got pretty tired of reading his comments after the 3rd app since he was just blantly being negative.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It's because a number of the ideas just plain suck and won't be useful for people.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Yet another stage of more vapourware. I promise to digg a final application that's actually useful and not a lot of fluff. Did anyone see "Disco", an app from one of the developers in this contest? He couldn't actually program good disc burning features so one of the main ones was shaking your laptop shakes the program window :)
Seems promising for these guys. Buried as lame, like every other MDA post until something final comes about.- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think you understand that feature. It's a visual cue that your laptop's been jostled which then gives you a chance to cancel the burn. Now, I'm not saying I think it's a USEFUL feature, but it's not quite as bad as you make out.
As for waiting for something final to come out, I do hope you are voting. Otherwise, you may be back here griping about the winner being an app you have no interest in. :/
- CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think you understand that feature. It's a visual cue that your laptop's been jostled which then gives you a chance to cancel the burn. Now, I'm not saying I think it's a USEFUL feature, but it's not quite as bad as you make out.
- remysharp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm really looking forward to the outcome of the Dream App, personally hoping for Cookbook, but they're all pretty cool.
- samfold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I really want Blossom. I'm a student so any incentive to make me word harder is good stuff.
- gugote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1blossom has to win. go blossom!
- chrisholland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's all about Blossom/Dan :)
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Reading through the Round 4 comments, Leo Laporte is a tough judge...and that's being kind. Love it.
- leucippus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why exactly are non-Mac users voting in this contest? The free software is Mac-only and the applications that eventually win will be Mac-only.
I'm just curious. - shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Honestly, the judges' comments were very disappointing for me, especially those from Leo Laporte and Kevin Rose. First, just know I'm a big fan of both, but most of their comments were not true ('Hijack won't work': Developer for MDA Jason Harris has repeated that it *is* feasible), or just pretty lame with no real substance to them.
It looks like they didn't take the time to really look at the idea, blog, and forum, where tons of info and ideas appear by the way.
Let's hope Woz and Guy Kawasaki do a better job. I'm confident they will. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Blossom... Noooo!!
