- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -18/+124Apparently, for being such hardy people, Muslims (the radicals, at least) can't seem to take very much.
A dutch newspaper mocks Mohammad- They freak out.
The Pope refers to an emperor or something- They freak out.
Apple builds a cube that's open all day and night-They freak out.
A radical muslim kills 10 Christians in a suicide bombing- someone might care for a day or two...but noone really freaks out.
That makes a whole lot of sense. - aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -50/+150Take your Ka'ba ***** somewhere else. Hey, I'm fine with Muslims and all, but when you start ***** with what secular U.S. businessmen have built, saying that it somehow remotely resembles the Ka'ba, you're ***** with the wrong country. It's none of your ***** business.
The same, of course, applies to Christians and Jews. Intelligent design should have no place in public schools. ***** belongs in Iran and North Korea, not here. - TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -17/+88As multiculturally accepting as I am, I can't help but be glad of every affront to Islam. Such intollerence deserves intollerence. However, this is just silly, muslims do not own geometric shapes.
- dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -8/+77Dude, you guys didn't patent the cube.
- jknight, on 10/12/2007, -22/+87Does this mean I should pray towards it 5 times a day?
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+74there are not people demonstrating in the streets every time a car bomb goes off, or an IED is set off.
But there is for a cartoon?!
What ***** planet are you living on? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+70what DOESNT offend the muslims?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -28/+83YES FINALLY!!!! an analogy for when christians get offended by something and they try to pass laws against it. people need to realise that they have no right to not be offended. that comes with freedom of expression, and it is a damn good thing.
- Tiger, on 10/12/2007, -7/+60I'm a muslim and i think this is just plain stupid.
And actually i was talking to my friends about it a few days ago.
One of my friends had a picture when the "apple cube" was covered with in black, so it really looked like the Ka'ba.
I don't even know if the image is real or photoshopped.
http://img219.imageshack.us/my.php?image=260920061033471hj8.jpg
But then I told them that it was the apple store before they opened it.
There are really a few (i repeat, a few) muslims that just want to be mad at the western people for anything... even if it wasn't true.
Those people are the ones who do appear in the media and people are noticing them.
I myself didn't notice that it looked like the Ka'ba until it was mentioned. And personally i think it's a great, unique design for an Apple store.
anyway, the whole thing is stupid.. and i don't see what the big deal is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+70Careful or some peace and diversity loving Muslim will blow up the store and everbody in it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+64Theres about 1.5billion muslims and few people's opinion do not represent the rest of the muslim population. Even if 10 million people (which is more than it probably is) protest against pope or cartoons that only represents 0.67% of the population so I don't know why the media makes it look like all the muslims think that way because they don't.
I don't think this story deserves a digg because I would consider it inaccurate as it suggests that it is the opinion of majority of muslims.
Also I am a muslim and I've seen tons of pictures of this store, time lapse on apple.com when it was launched and never did it remind of the Kaaba. I think the intention of the story's author is targeting those few stupid people (kind of people who look for a reason to fight) in hopes of gaining support against non-muslims. - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -21/+71...and make sense
- Barbrady, on 10/12/2007, -9/+57The Religion of Perpetual Outrage is seemingly always upset about something. They need to wash the sand out of their vaginas and shut the hell up instead of constantly whining about everything.
- barakatx2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+52"YES FINALLY!!!! an analogy for when christians get offended by something and they try to pass laws against it. people need to realise that they have no right to not be offended. that comes with freedom of expression, and it is a damn good thing."
And part of the freedom of expression is to be pissed about whatever you want. - thehouse, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41I'm offended by offended Muslims.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+53Steve Jobs should tell them to go ***** themselves.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Unfortunately, Big Mac is already trademarked.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34OK, people, I have one thing to say: Calm the ***** down. Not everything is supposed to offend you, and even if it does, you don't have to respond in such a childish manner.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Too much PC? That's why we have Apple.
(Sorry I had to...) - Archimboldo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36These egregious offenses by Apple infidels are why we use Windows to plan our beheadings and car bombings.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37"I say we plant bombs in Dell laptops!"
"Brilliant plan, Ahmed! I think I will promote you to lead suicide bomber, and buy you a MacBook." - bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36The title of this Article is extremely provocative. I have many muslim friends and they won't give two ***** about that glass cube.
95% of the muslims (the ones that have a brain) are probably not offended by something as inane as this idea (they're just people like me and you), but what should happen is ZDnet should be held accountable for choosing a title that provokes hatred against muslims.
Shame on ZDnet for trying to capitalize on such a ridiculous research project. Don't these people have something better to do?
The people who are offended by this are the same idiots that get offended because a hamburger looks like the congress building. They have on thing in common, it's idiotic. - batv0r, on 10/12/2007, -23/+47Too much PC in the world now its sickening. Call it what you want Apple.
- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -15/+38A picture of Mohammad eating a plate of pork chops while facing south West at 5 oclock?
- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -12/+34@minimaximus
Sorry , dont beleive you. Your book teaches hatred and violence. It preaches intolerance. Time you idiots got some of that crap thrown back at you. Blame these 'radicals' as you people like to call them. I have a feeling they are much more the norm than the radicals you claim them to be.
Stop being idiots and people will stop treating you as such. - testcase, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Tiger:
You seem like a very reasonable person. I wish there were a lot more like you.
It must be terrible to be lumped in with a bunch of crazy hyper-sensitive ***** all the time.
To all you SANE Muslims like Tiger: reign in these idiots will you? Holy *****! - derkles, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Islam has got to be the most offended and defensive religion, at least publicly. I mean, you don't see many Erisians or Discordians being offended by G.W.Bush eating a hot dog on a bun! Satanists must be offended all the "evil" branding has been given to the "axis of evil." Can't the Apple store just be bad architecture without being symbolic. Look out Rubik, your cube is not safe!
- chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32They don't whine, they blow themselves up, set bombs on roadsides, or lob missiles into towns (trying to take out as many women and children they possibly can in the process).
- maledin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Who cares that they're offended?
Something offends me nearly every day, but my opinion isn't in the papers. The world is a big place, many things are going to resemble other things, some that you may find sacred. Get used to being offended or get out. Not everything revolves around your religion or your silly (personal) beliefs. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28oh come on everyones a sour puss nowadays; I would be flattered.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29Notice he said it was the Mossad's fault. EVERYTHING is Israel's fault with these people.
Dude, seriously, y'all need to get with the program and learn some
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.
All the strife in your world is NOT caused by Israel's existence. It is caused by the hatred that is preached in your mosques.
The sooner you get out of the 6th century, and into the 21st, the better off y'all will be. - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25I think a few people on here are misreading lickmygiggle's post. If Muslims are so sensitive about PR, and are driven to insane acts of violence every time they perceive the religion to be degraded, then shouldn't they be greatly concerned when one of their own does something to embarass the religion? Surely the fact that suicide bombings are occurring daily in Iraq is much worse publicity for the Islamic faith than a cube-shaped building in Midtown which may or may not serve alcoholic beverages. Yet they persist in acting like lunatics at the mere suggestion that they might be unreasonable.
They burn down buildings because of cartoons mocking Mohammed, claiming that religious satire is off-limits, then publish anti-Semitic cartoons in protest. When the Pope correctly refers to Islam as a violent religion, their solution is to demonstrate violently. And this is not the work of a handful of radicals. There is something inhuman built into the religion that causes these mass acts of insanity. It is sane, reasonable Muslims who are the minority, as countless polls taken throughout the Muslim world can attest. And this is coming from a liberal atheist. I can't stand it when they put an articulate, British-educated Muslim in a suit on TV, as if to show the world that they aren't *all* bad. Those well-groomed, suited, moderate Muslims represent about as large a percentage of the population as transsexual Republicans.
The Islamic faith deserves to be mocked for its self-righteousness and hypocrisy. I'd like to see Apple cubes built all over the country -- complete with hookers, beer, and pork sausages -- just to spite Muslims. - kumari82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19If there's one thing I've learned about radical Muslims, it's that they have absolutely no sense of irony. Suggest that they're a bunch of murderers and they'll threaten to kill you. Way to prove the point.
Anyway, what Western observers see is a body that freaks out over the slightest offenses. But when innocents get killed in London or Madrid or Baghad there's deafening silence.
It's not fair to ask mainstream Muslims to defend their religion. I realize this. But perception counts. And it seems the mainstream supports the radicals in thought if not in deed.
Also note, that while there are lengthy academic books arguing that Islam is a religion based on war, the counterargument is a nebulous appeal to good intentions. The Muslim partisan for peace has to work uphill when there're Islam-branded explosions going off all over the world.
/prepare for bury - WizardGraphics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Hi all. My name is Mohamed. I am a muslim, I live in Egypt and I am a faithful mac user. Like all of you I was completely shocked to hear this news that muslims are offended by the NYC apple cube. To me the idea of resemblance (on the bases of the geometrical shape)is totally not just rediculous but also outrageous.
I assure you there is no such thing as muslim anger any where in the middle east or other muslim contries. They haven't even heard about the NYC apple cube in the first place.
Those at that 'unknown group' to me or to any other peer moderate muslim here in the middle east are -in my opinion- TOTAL IDIOTS and COMPLETE MORONS that are only expressing their own MENTAL DEFICIENCY. They really give Islam a bad reputation.
And why the hell would any one spend millions of dollars on a store to offend someone else??
Please people, don't make a big deal out of this. I assure you all no one is offended and these morons speak for their-sick-selves.
Islam is far far far from all this crap. Those are not muslims and those killing innocent people on TV are not muslims those are sick people and terrorists who use Islam as a cover to make us REAL Muslims look BAD.
Again please people, be sensible and don't pay attention to this kind of crap. - rhesuspieces00, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21You have to admire the genius of this. Think of the royalties you could collect if you got a patent on square buildings.
- AhmedF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Freak out? *ONE WEBSITE* is freaking out?
- qwertydvorak, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25why do you assume the only place bombings happen alot is iraq ? the people of israel have been putting up with it for longer than the iraq war.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20It takes killing almost 3 thousand on live TV to get the US to freak out.
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25The Apple cube is nothing like the Ka'ba.
The Ka'ba is opaque and off limits to anyone who is not a Muslim and doesn't have a penis.
The Apple cube is transparent and open to everyone. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19You should read www.tuaw.com....
http://www.tuaw.com/2006/10/11/muslim-community-offended-by-apples-fifth-avenue-nyc-cube/
the writer there wrote about the same article with the title "Muslim community offended by Apple store". If anyone had bother to read instead of succumbing to the usual knee-jerk reactions, they would have realized that it was some random website that made the statement, not a large community/group of Muslims. I guess people will do anything to get a bunch of clicks. They didn't even bother to change the title or revise the post even after people complained in the comments. - hankyone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I am Muslim too and no it doesn't offend me in any way, they should stop putting the spotlight on the bad ones
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23sorry, I don't remember the outrage about the Apple Cube computer...
no more cube shaped dice for D&D
lets outlaw all cube shaped boxes while were at it, UPS are you listening? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21for all I care they could rename the iPod "iPope" and I wouldn't freak out like these overly whiney religious nut jobs.
Maybe I should change me name to "Mohammed was a pedophile", it's perfectly true. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21The fact is, you can't please everyone. Someone, somewhere, will always take offense to something. That's life. Why should the Muslims be treated any differently?
Next thing you know we'll be banning kids blocks because they look like mini Ka'ba. Guess what Muslims? The Ka'ba is a big freakin square. How many things in this world are also big squares. Should we ban them all? - vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I wonder if followers of ancient Eygptian religions got pissed when the Louvre built their glass pyramids.
- absurdist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18@WaterDragon:
How about a nice hot cup of shut the ***** up?
When an individual demonstrates he cannot be trusted to live in civilized society, he is removed from that society for the greater good.
When a group, be they fundamentalist Muslims, fundamentalist Christians, neo-nazis, or whoever, demonstrates the same inability to be trusted in a civilized world, the same concept applies.
Try toning down the hysterical overreaction next time and maybe you'll be taken more seriously. - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23From your lips to Allah's ears, let's hope that the plans for the next bombing will be wiped out by a BSOD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Genius and Islam have never before been used in one sentence, I don't see why you need to buck the trent right now.
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Should we tell them that they don't serve alcohol? Boy are they going to be surprised.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Why is it that anytime something contradicts arabic *****, it is either a CIA or Mossad propagand trick or a George Bush lie?
