Motorola CEO: 'Screw the nano'
news.yahoo.com — Apple Computer's newest MP3 player, the iPod nano, is receiving rave reviews and analy sts believe the device will solidify Apple's dominance in the competitive MP3 player market for at least another year. However, not everyone praises the device -- Motorola CEO Ed Zander had some harsh words for the nano in a recent interview.

- boinko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Let me guess: Zander is one of those old guys who wears bad suits, reads bestselling management books, and prides himself on his inability to read e-mail.
Or maybe he's some young punk who thinks he's hot-***** because he says what's on his mind. He's a "dynamic leader" and doesn't let anyone finish their sentences because he's too busy and doesn't like people who think too much. He's got a badass set of golf clubs, drives a Lexus convertible, and heads down to Pinehurst and Forest Creek on one of his buddy's private jets.
yeah, Zander's a winner. He's a tunraround guy. - Draven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I say "screw the Rokr".. a lame ass, overpriced phone that stores a wopping 100 songs. wahoo !@
anyone want a $250 512k thumbdrive?
anyone... ?? cricket.. cricket.. - Jules, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0http://digg.com/apple/Moto_CEO_says_screw_the_Nano
- hazri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kinda agree with him. I dislike all the Ipod thing simply because
I can get an Iriver MP3 player with FM radio and LCD screen at cheaper price. If Ipod has FM radio then i will change my mind - gandell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jealous much?
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not the same as that story in the above digg post, it's a lot more concise and to the point, BUT the original MacCentral article should be linked ()

lol gg - weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops, thaqt should be http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/09/26/motceo/index.php
- rayde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5he goes, "What the hell does the nano do? Who listens to 1,000 songs?" when i believe the question he should be asking is "Who listens to only 100 songs" on their lame, crippled, Motorola ROKR?
- spade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple make a bold move and introduce your own phone MWSF '06!
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Aparently a lot of people listen to 1,000 songs. They wouldn't still be making iPods if they didn't.
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He can say what he wants, meanwhile, Apple laughs all the way to the bank. He really should watch it though, I was under the impression that Apple and Motorola were in good together because of the ROKR. I must be wrong, or is it cingular's Zorro-man who really wears the pants in that relationship?
- blinkcowz182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yup looks like a douchebag
http://www.corante.com/mooreslore/archives/images/zander_ed_motorola.jpg - blhack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why do all of the iPod fan bois imediatley sa that people are jealous if they don't like any of the ipods. I like the iPod...the REGULAR ipod that has like 40 gigs of storage space and plays mp3s. The ipod nano is just STUPID, yes i've seen them, yes i've used them, i really don't CARE how small the damn thing is. If you want to actually start impressing people make the thing have an AM/FM tuner in it...have the fm modulator build into the thing, include a voice recorder, video playback, and support every single media format that there is. Then we'll talk.
- orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I think he said it just to give you Apple fanboys something to bitch about on a Monday morning.
- candre23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What is the benefit of a radio in an ipod? The whole reason most people buy an ipod is so that they don't have to listen to the garbage on the radio.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Certain people on the Creative payroll on this board: the market has pretty firmly decided it doesn't care about FM radio on their iPods. They got the iPods so that, with their own music and their podcast subscription, they can forget all those a__hole announcers and the relentless commercials for mortgages, phony cures, and being generally targeted as a demographic by a__hole record companies. If FM radio ever returns to something decent, like the old album rock stations of the '70s-- but it won't. They'd be better off turning those frequencies into WiFi or something like that.
- mattconn24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea Motorola might want to watch it. Think about it. It isn't necessarily that people need more then one hundred songs with them, but it is nice to have the songs you want when you want them so if you have all of your songs then that isn't a problem... Motorola is going to screw themselves if they are not careful!!!
- starbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0candre23 - I couldn't agree more.
- kaje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$250? That's the ROKR "cheap." You have to purchase a 2-year plan to get it that cheap. The phone in itself is upward around $400 without a plan. LOL?
- yaphi, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I can't wait to see what Apple does to fire back at him...I love when steve gets mad
- RedStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The iPod Nano is hot to death and the ROKR is a pile of *****! I'd be mad too. Steve's a Pimp isn't he. Not everyone can make a CEO swear... it's icing on the cake.
- icupg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I can get an Iriver MP3 player with FM radio and LCD screen at cheaper price. If Ipod has FM radio then i will change my mind"
Why would you want a radio in it? I bought an Ipod so I wouldn't have to listen to the godawful FM airwaves. - taraba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Get the facts people. Apple wouldn't let Motorola put more than 100 songs on the phone because they didn't want it to compete with their products. Apple crippled the ROKR themselves in the software they gave to Motorola.
- freeyayo50, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Screw the nano is right.....Apple should've came out with a ipod that plays video or even has a simple damn FM tuner in it.
- RedStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Taraba... stating opinion for fact is a foolish thing. The ROKR's memory thingy can only hold so much and it takes over an hour to load up 100 files. If they had more space I doubt people would use it. Get your opinions and facts straight.
- Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Taraba...
Could you please state your source for your comment? - RedStarr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0freeyayo50
Yayo sucks ass... how does a guy like that get connected with 50 cent. He's a fat little man with typical phone skills. He should be somewhere stacking boxes getting paid minimum wage and not talking about how girls make him horny on national T.V. - weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as people tout convergence, I think it's one of the great myths of the oughties. Sure, my phone now has an integrated web browser and camera, but did I throw out my camera and stop using my browser on my computer? No.
Will people give up dedicated listening devices for phones? Doubtful. Will people appreciate having additional if incomplete functionality? I got rid of my wristwatch, but telling time is a much easier prospect than playing back music how I want, when I want. One happening does not mean that the next is assuredly on the horizon. - number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who listens to 1,000 songs? Me and everyone that bought an iPod, and there's a lot of us!
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FM is useless nowdays. I don't see why people want it; maybe for the shockjocks or the commercials every 3 minutes that last for 8 minutes? FM radio is crap.
As to the Video iPod idea, a lot of people still don't get it. Ummm, why would Apple push into a foray that doesn't have an abundant content to push on it? The iRiver and whatever those other MP3 Players are might do it, but who really puts out content for that stuff? Not everyone is going to buy a video player, run home and spend hours and hours encoding videos at a hit and miss kinda style to watch video.
Its just not a feasible time to start pushing video on players. There aren't any dedicated services to supply people with stuff to watch. Besides who really enjoys watching movies on a 2" color screen? But until then, don't expect a vPod until Apple comes up with a dedicated Video Store. - martinj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ed Zander took the reigns from the Chris Galvin (founder's grandson) about one year ago and has shown a profit for the first time in 5 years. Prior to coming to Motorola, Ed was president and COO of Sun Microsystems. Sun is not a button up company; it is the opposite. Ed has brought that culture to Motorola.
Motorola is not really worried with what apple is doing. The ROKR is just another blip on the product radar that Motorola puts out.

Motorola also is the World Leader in Biometrics. Supply many countries like the RCMP (Canada), Sweden, Switzerland, Bosnia, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Luxembourg, just to name a few with full fingerprint and in some case facial identification system.
Ed is just responding to the hype that devout apple to busy to worry a sorry music player. - PiReX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"People are going to want devices that do more than just play music, something that can be seen in many other countries with more advanced mobile phone networks and savvy users" he has a good point there i like the nano but its just not as innovative as the ROKR, it just needs reworkin and alot more capacity
- ianubis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Replacing the ipod mini for the nano was a big mistake.
- Fowz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jealous and bitter me thinks!!!....I didn't even charge a fee for that. This on tail end of Job's slating some mobile phone operators for wanting to charge £1.50 to download a song.
- devilman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a dork. Even if Mr. Zander is at the helm in turning around Motorola, his companies brand has ZERO street cred compared to Apple and Mr. Jobs. OK the Razor's cool, but it's just a phone. And the ROKR? Embarrasing. I guess he figured any press he can get is good press.
- EntropyGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, he's just pissed because Apple upstaged the Rokr release big time. Not that the Rokr would have been saved if it would have been the only product Stevie J. announce that day, but at least it would have gotten a bit more buzz without Nano's thunder.
- maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Dupe: http://digg.com/apple/Moto_CEO_says_screw_the_Nano
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Devilman makes a good point. I'm sure Ford makes more in profit and releases more cars than, say, Lamborghini. Maybe Apple isn't the Lamborghini of their world but they're more Lamorghini than they are the Ford.
- martinj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lamborgini is nice, but I'd rather have Ford's profits.
Can we say Delorean...nice concept, cool for a while, but the guy died broke. - derekknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yowza yowza yowza... I love me sum goood juicy drama!
Summary:
1) Nano=cool, easily scratched, but cool (i ordered a case for mine, not regretting getting white now)
2) ROKR = old phone retrofitted to play music
3) CEOs = need to be class acts, especially towards industry partners - AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't make Uncle Steve angry. You won't like him when he's angry...
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The point isn't who can make the most. Steve Jobs, for all his faults, isn't simply concerned with making money in and of itself. When all is said and done, people are going to remember the companies that changed the status quo, not the ones that made a fat buck, and I think egotistical Jobs, for all his faults, just wants to do something memorable, and to change the way people look at certain processes.
- xENo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"yeah, Zander's a winner. He's a tunraround guy."
Holy crap... you just made up two entire personas about this guy, based on one comment, and then defamed his character based on your own presumptions?
lol... I hope I never hire anyone like you! - martinj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What an idiot...Jobs is worth over 6 billion dollars...of course he is not worried about making money. He does have a responsibility to his stock holders. Apple has had to be saved a couple times from going under. A smart investor knows that Apple is an in flux company, that is not reliable for the long haul. You can only blow up the company so many times before people stop trusting you. Apple is on top of the world right now; but if it wants to stay afloat it's got to be serious and focus on more than the ipod...it uniqueness is short lived. The move to Intel will make a dent; but will not hurt Dell, HP or beige box manufacturers. As long as you apple fanatics are around (and continue to enjoy being ripped off by the guy who is not concerned with making money) Apple will be fine. But when you people grow and realize that you have been hosed; Apple will drop and eventually need to be salvaged again.
- KPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who needs FM? I can live without it.
- bgramer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FM is obsolete. Podcasts will take over once MP3 players reach critical mass. People will listen to whatever station's podcast whenever they want, not necessarily at specific times.
- martinj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yeah FM is obsolete....let me drive around for an hour trying to find an open Wi-Fi spot. Take five minutes to turn on my laptop and connect to itunes. Wait 20 minutes to download a 20 minute podcast. Upload to Ipod and listen to Leo's three week old (beacuse it was not posted for three weeks) Saturday radio show.
IF I HAD A TUNER (AM/FM) I COULD HAVE LISTENED TO THE SHOW LIVE AND NOT HAVE TO HAD GONE THROUGH ALL THAT AND STILL WAIT THREE WEEKS. - boinko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Holy crap... you just made up two entire personas about this guy, based on one comment, and then defamed his character based on your own presumptions?
lol... I hope I never hire anyone like you!"
Don't worry. I wouldn't work for anyone like you. - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He's just mad because his phone that was poised to take over the world can be beat with a little ducktape, and any of apple's flash based players...
