- echolalia, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4440 is actually alot in relation to the amount of people who want one.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36This means only one thing: NERD FIGHT!
- nsummy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+35What's the big deal? 40 is a lot more than the number of x-box 360s and ps3's that retail stores got. Also put this in perspective: 40 iphones is about $25,000 worth of merchandise. Combine that with the the fact that unless you are already a cingular customer or don't currently have a cell phone you will have to deal with getting out of a contract elsewhere. I just somehow don't see an overwhelming demand on the 1st day. And when I say overwhelming I mean it in the sense of people camping out for days until midnight.
- phisquare, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25@smartsingh24
Please remove smart from your name. Thank you. - SwissCamel, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Phew! Just as well I didn't want one anyway really.
- SpectralSounds, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Ill join your line in a couple years, .... maybe. When they are giving away free iPhones when you sign a contract.
- strikezero, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20and you will be alone.
- NasKa, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16sick of iPhone already. I don't care.
- basye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Wake me up when 3rd gen is ready. I'm happy to let others be the guinea pigs for new technology.
- InstantRamen, on 10/11/2007, -16/+23Omg its the iphone. i think its being over hyped . but what do i know i am just one digger.
Digg me down ( Bakeru ) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7this phone is not worth the amount of money apple asks for.
- brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Normally, I'd say that 40 is going to be more than enough because not enough people are going to want to drop $600 on a subsidized phone.
But then again, the PS3 sold out everywhere as well. - calgone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Your house?
- Xanadude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5That should be "fewer than," not "less than."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Did you actually watch it or are you just another troll? Go to Endgadget and learn something. They have images that show the big giant list of iPhone features - top of the list - Killer App: Making Phonecalls!
- Gee1004, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The 3rd gen may be worst than the 1st gen.
- Squidly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2In other news, the Snorg Tees ad girls are HAWT.
- internetslacker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Let the iBloodbath begin. Hope there's YouTube videos of people getting shoved face-first into lamp poles during the consumer frenzy.
- JDoorjam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's not 40 per store. Read the article. ONE store is expecting as many as 40:
"Most stores expect the phone on June 15th or June 22nd, and most expect to only have a few (highest number was 40 at one store) on hand initially."
Expect most stores to have far fewer. (I will not be one of the people you'll be racing against to get one of these delightful but overpriced toys.) - IlDuce, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I'm an AT&T employee working at a corprate store, and we haven't heard any firm numbers - at least in this region. Any numbers that the stores are tossing out are probably guestimates, and shouldn't be taken as fact. We're totally in the dark right now about any details that aren't readily available on the website.
- mannyv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Distribution is through Apple stores and Cingular/AT&T stores. It's unclear whether they'll be available through Apple's online store.
I think I'll get mine in an AT&T store if I can, because the multitude of plans is confusing. Is it a smartphone, pda, or blackberry data plan? Does unlimited mean unlimited, or "until we feel you've used too much bandwidth?" How do you graft a voice plan onto it?
I doubt Apple's store employees will be up on all that crud. - leonbev, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sure... they could wait until they build enough to meet the demand, but what's the fun in that? It's way more entertaining to show hordes of geeks waiting in line for days in order to get their hands on an iPhone! It's like the PS3 all over again! I wonder how many will be on eBay the next day?
I'm sure that media outlets like CNN already have their story templates in place in order to be the ready to report the first iPhone related mugging! That's good television! - praxisseizure, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1woah no! i don't want my phone broadcasting my GPS location.. hell no.
bad idea. let them triangulate that ***** and spend the money to track me. grrr.. it's the difference of having access to 911 emergency services or being monitored constantly through a giant database of positioning info. i'll take the hardships of the current 911 situation, thanks. the maps are easy enough to use without gps. - ebonyamberjade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I kind of agree with you.
This phone better live up to its hype cause otherwise there are going to be a LOT of disappointed people, especially since it costs so much money. - yujie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I'll be happy with a Nokia N95 or whatever new Sony Ericcson have
- streak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't worry! Less than 40 could mean a number of things. 40 things to be exact. Anywhere from 39 down to 0 iPhones.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I wouldn't buy one unless it was given to me. Has ANYONE said anything about the PHONE sound
quality? Plus, it's overpriced....do to the "hype" surrounding the "i" part of the name.
When it flops (do to the price) you'll see serious discounting. The only early takers are the ones who
will flash it around (and probably get mugged) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+040 iPhone sales at each AT&T stores? You gotta be kidding me. Well, maybe in california but other than that they'd probably receive orders 10 at max. At $599, you have to stick with a 2-year contract and a premium $ubscription plan on your purchase. That alone would cost you more than 2000 bucks!
- Mudb0y, on 10/11/2007, -7/+7Go look at what people said about an iPod 5 or 6 years ago, right before launch...
"Nobody will pay that much for an MP3 player"
"I'll buy one when they are $99"
"only Apple fanboys would be so stupid"
Same type of crap, and we all know what a flop the iPod was/is...
The iPhone will kick everyones ass for a while. I have friends who have used them already, they are impressed, and they aren't apple fanboys. Basically, if you aren't addicted to a crackberry, you will play with this, and be in love, and want one of your very own, and $599 won't seem so bad, since its a phone, internet device, and media player.
That being said, I refuse to buy one until they put a damn GPS chip in the thing... Seriously, GPS chips are about 30 cents... - nreisan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0if they get 40 per store at launch id be suprised.
40 is A LOT for this kind of item. - JMaelstrom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Don't kid yourself - Apple products aren't that big of a deal...
- StaplesGuy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1That's funny, I was under the impression that the AT&T stores didn't even know when to expect that damn things, let alone the quantities to have in stock
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4You forgot the "/sarcasm" tag.
- frostieDude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I plan to buy one at the very first opportunity. Hopefully I can get my hands on the 8GB model.
I am attending WWDC again this year and hopefully they will have an SDK for it (but don't count on it unless maybe a dashboard widgets SDK). If they don't have an SDK, I'm totally going to hack it.
While I would like a 3G radio and GPS and an 80GB hard drive, etc this isn't a fantasy device - it is a real device manufactured on earth not heaven. So, everyone has something to bitch about. If it had 3G people would bitch about the lack of coverage for 3G. - JMaelstrom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Everything about Appler products are overhyped - bigger than life... Wanna listen to tunes, get a zune - wanna talk on the phone - get a motorla
- adambair, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0@mannyv: I was talking strictly about hardware. I wouldn't think Apple would want to get into the messy details of data/cell plans.
If there's going to be a shortage at the local AT&T stores, I would assume you could just snag one directly from Apple then go to an AT&T location and get the plan setup. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Did anyone watch the video of Steve Jobs at the conference? Did you hear him call the iPhone 'the best iPod we've ever made'? You can tell they are really ***** their pants at the prospect of competing in the cellular space and this is why they are rebranding it. Remember MacWorld 2007 - what was the 'killer app' there kiddies? That's right - back then Steve said the killer app was 'making phonecalls.' Oh I can't wait to see this bloodbath. You could actually see the fear in Steve's eyes this time around.
- haggie, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3at least the guy that drives the short bus will know where to pick up all his students...
- Berrex, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Actually, by the time you get to the store there will be 0 left because I'm going to buy them all.
- adambair, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Won't most people buy the phones directly from Apple? I assume that you would be able just order one through their website -- just like all of their other products. Relinquishing distribution doesn't seem like Apple's style...
- psychotron, on 10/11/2007, -7/+4"...but self-respect ended a long ways back"
- clackerd, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3god damn that is some funny comedy. watch out! carlos mencia has been lurking around digg lately...
- lepton, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3That's not a change, it's exactly the same thing he said back in the keynote. It's the best iPod AND phone AND Internet device. -Mike from http://www.myallo.com
- Mindables, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1@wallbanger
It will be interesting to see the eBay numbers. Someone should start a pool...lol - BZKyle, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2*iPhone*
/me diggs this for no reason - unangst, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Time to track down the rural AT&T stores...
- iSeven, on 10/11/2007, -14/+3i prefer cripple fights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu0wKcyr-gk
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/11/2007, -18/+3Ebay gouging starts here.
Anyone know of the implications of selling iPhones on Ebay after they've been committed to a phone contract? - Antialias, on 10/11/2007, -20/+4You're a market researcher I take it? They've got millions if not billions invested in this, they aren't going to ship a ton of extra phones there is no demand for. Every single phone might not sell on day 1, but they surely aren't going to have piles of them sitting around.
