1% of Americans own Apple Computers - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31zzzzzzzzzzz so what
more than 90% of Americans own a microsoft product... - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29The statement in the headline refers to an online survey.
This is the closest matching statement I could find outside of that source: "We estimate that between 15 percent and 20 percent of Americans own an iPod or another portable music player." Needham & Co analyst Charles Wolf, July 26 2006.

Not so accurate. - HideoKojima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20inncurate trash.
- TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22And nearly 25% of those paid for it.
- Mactard, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20I have some granny smiths, does that count?
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Made up surveys do not reflect the market.
- Hellman109, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14So Apple expect to sell 25 million 'iPhones' to people without an apple product?
Err.... Riiight.
They are more likely to sell them to someone with an apple product, especially older ipods, nanos, shuffles etc. IMO that is. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10docdoak is proud to be part of the 80%.
- caffeinelover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You were counted as 3 Americans. Congratulations.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"And nearly 25% of those paid for it."
Believe me, we *all* pay for it... - Demetrium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8And less than 1% of us care!
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you've noticed -- Apple's advertising markets products with the idea not necessarily that Apple is best, but that what you are using now isn't. This isn't an anti-Apple statement; look at their ads and think. "I'm a Mac" ads mostly start off with a misfortune with "PC". So it wouldn't surprise me at all that the iPhone -- Applephone -- whatever is targeted at people who aren't satisfied with their "walkman phones", which oddly seem to be all the rage lately.
OH -- and that article is *****. No reasarch quoted - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually I would say for their ads based around the OS, it's equal parts look at what we can do, to equal parts look what PC's can't. Which for the most part, is actually true! But when it comes to iPod, Apple had never marketed them that way.. the iPod's are cool, Apple just accentuated that. And I think no matter what the hack way they market the iPod Phone it will sell like piping hot juicy cakes! Frankly todays phones suck, people already know that, so Apple doesn't even need to tell us that.
Just put the phone on screen for 5 seconds with the words "The new iPod Phone. Listen to your music. Make your call. In Style." under it, and it will walk off the shelves. - 8ight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i'm part of the 80% made up number... gladly!
i've been spending my holiday break (school teacher) doing phone support for everones ipods they got for christmas. some people... well, they just shouldn't be allowed to own mp3 players... or operate computers.
oh, and i don't know how many times i've heard "how do i get free music?" (or some variation of that question) from future owners who had their ipods under the tree for the last two months. brutal!
my creative zen vision m i got for my wife is something to wet about. the video support is a thing of beauty. i still rock out on my ihp 140 iriver, yeaaa! love it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Jesus, Give the F'ing Mac stories a rest already! Seems like the front page is the same three stories over and over.
- boltsmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No one "owns" a Microsoft product because they are all licensed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I own lots of apple products. I just ate some apple pie, I had some apple cider the other day, and I've got about eight macs in my fridge. they *can* be really fast macs, too - if i chuck them hard enough.
- TheADOGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wait, 50 Million != 20% of 300 Million. 16.66%. Saying 15-20% makes a better headline, but is misleading.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Be realistic, not stupid.
Of that 20%, about 97% are iPod owners.
Digg sure is full of Apple fanboys. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Read: 19% of Americans own an ipod.
(not me) - CaptAngryPants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4To borrow the idea recently made famous again by Penn and Teller:
You can make numbers say anything you want, including lies. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How many Americans own a *Sony* product?
Walkmans, cameras, VCRs, DVD players, phones, stereos, tape recorders, televisions, still cameras, video cameras, PDAs, personal computers, phones, radios, not to mention studio and other professional equipment, ... and this li'l thing called the PlayStation. - generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I have a green apple pie and a jar of apple sauce in the fridge. Do they count as apple products?
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why are they dumb americans? Because they use iPods? Why do you people have to be "different?"
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple Phone? What does this story have to do with Apple phone?
- bustaballs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I own a Apple II. Does that count?
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You mean someone actually gave their credit card number to a website named Bargain 1-2-3? That's hilarious.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@kirkio
There are far more than 3 million Mac users in the US. - RedViper1999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Glad to say I own no apple products. Especially not an ipod.
- Chaotyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's as if 50 million people suddenly called out in pain... and then were suddenly silenced by noise from white earbuds.
- maninblac1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm glad i'm part of the majority.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah, it seems like Digg has these biorhythms.... Wii time, then Saddam time, then Apple time, repeat...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah...he knows that. He has been posting the same thing all day.
HS...enjoy your banishment from Digg. Keeo it up and you'll get an IP ban. - theiggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Gawt...walkman phoens are all the rage? To whom? Most surveys overwhelmingly show that people want FEWER bells and whistles and more concentration on improving the few key features they want."
this is true.
"Here is a reality check for the fanboys...Apple has NEVER entered a market successfully. All their success was when they were an early player in a market. They have NEVER defeated a competitor who had a loyal following of their own. And cell phone manufacturers have their own fanboys. People aren't going to chuck their Blackberries, or Sidekicks, etc."
wrong in so many ways.
apple has been very successful in the consumer computing and education computing markets that they go after. they're also successful in the pro creative spaces. they're not successful in the enterprise space, but they dont push hard on it. that market is dominated by cheap, commodity boxes with very low profit margins. there's little value there. just look at dell's bottom line (and you'll start to understand why apple is valued above dell in terms of market cap).
apple has been very successful with DAPs. they've been very successful selling digital music online, they're about to pass amazon in music sales. they've been incredibly successful in software, quicktime and itunes are prolific. in terms of quality, quicktime beats WM easily. in mindshare its at least equal.
"Combining that with the fact that every single iPhone sold is one less iPod sold, and this could be a HUGE mistake for Apple. They are cannibalizing their big money maker to enter a ridiculously crwoded marketplace 8 years too late. And as the iPod sales drop thanks to iPhone, it gives Microsoft lots of marketing power since their market share of Zune will increase."
is that your zune wish fullfillment?
they came into the DAP market late, started mac only and very high priced, and took over in time. they basically did what the MS people claim MS does- iterate and release until success is met. the difference is that apple starts high quality and filters down to the masses, whereas MS starts low, aims low, and basically spams the market.
apple has figured out how to price and release strategically. whatever they do, its unlikely to cannibalize anything. on the other hand- what MS has done with the zune is piss off their former partners, their former customers (plays4sure customers), and cannibalize their own former plays4sure market.
i'm sure the zune market will increase to *as high as* 15% as it slowly eats away at plays4sure, but thats where it ends. there's nothing so far to indicate apple will lose ipod market share to zune. feel bad for MS's prior partners, as they eliminate competition. i expect sandisk will put up a good fight for years tho, probably manage to keep zune at bay for some time. - funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The pod people want you to submit.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I own 3 dead iPods, does that count or not?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Every time some idiot tries to extrapolate a TINY group of like minded people to represeent the entire population, it makes me lauhg. IT proves you are an idiot. And hence, you probably have idiots as roommates. (Seriously...even if you are in college...how many ***** roomates could you possibly have?) So, I guess that means that half of the idiot population have iPods.
Guess what? I know a lot of college people. I am a DJ in a college bar. I don't know ANYONE with an iPod. I guess that means that ZERO percent of Americans own an iPod. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Agreed. This algorithm 1) is a volunteer survey, which are never representative, and 2) doesn't take ownership of multiple products into account, and 3) takes fruit apples into consideration.
Using the same algorithm as the survey, roughly 1000% of Americans own a Microsoft product. - theiggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>>>>>Gawt...walkman phoens are all the rage? To whom? Most surveys overwhelmingly show that people want FEWER bells and whistles and more concentration on improving the few key features they want.

+digg for Oregon Trail; I remember that from the 5th grade. - acff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5in my experience, ms > apple
i hate having to use apple for school stuff.
i'll probably never own an apple product. not a great brand. - sotopheavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You are referring to the tyranny of the majority. Whatever the majority says the minority must obey. Every system his its drawbacks even democracy. Although its much better in practice than any other system.
- lotus22, on 10/12/2007, -4/+590% of which are iPods.
- shank2001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Actually the Power Macs are cheaper than equivalent Dells. I am a PC user currently, but I am convinced the best bang for the buck are with Macs now days. Bootcamp rules, can run any OS you want on a Mac, even at the same time. Which is something I require, as much of the software I need to run is Windows only. That reason (run any program from pretty much any OS without leaving OSX) is why a Mac is in my future, not to mention they are less costly than equivalent Dells, and have great designs as well. Not really impressed with Vista so far either, so there you have it.
- plgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The iPhone is still just speculation... no matter what anyone says. I hate when mac fans and haters both put so much stress on how great or ***** it will be... its not a real product yet or probably ever.
- starguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+150% of the 20% are Apple IIc's that were found in school dumpsters, and yellowing Mac Pluses abandoned years ago in landfills or at flea markets and garage sales
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If Apple would make the desktops more affordable maybe more people would buy them and that number would be alot higher.
- f0dder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4another useless apple front page post...
