Matthew - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Battlestar Galactica, Law and Order, Monk, The Office - hell, they even have Knight Rider. I'm slightly closer to actually buying an episode of TV off of iTunes now that they have some shows worth watching (well, besides Lost) - but it still somehow doesn't feel quite right downloading something that I do/have taped (except my tapes are crappy SLP VHS).
But their selection of Conan sucks. Two bucks for some twelve minute clips, and the two Conan DVDs for $10 a piece - why not offer full episodes the day after? - dunstdunst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://caprica.us
- Devin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SCORE! Battlestar and Monk, two of my favourite shows on right now!
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find it very interesting how they are offering two hour long Conan O'Brien specials for 9.99 each. Looks to me like Apple is gradually getting closer and closer to a movie distribution model...
- corkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Earl, as in Earl Sinclair, from Dinosaurs?
- custerfluck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1[dreamworld] There should be a choice... pay outragous price with no comercials, or download for free from itunes with commercials.[/dreamworld]
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To all of "I can't believe people pay for this stuff" diggers:
This sort of content is for people who want something fast, without having to wait for it to air on TV to record it to their DVR, or hunt it down and steal it on Torrent, or whatever means of obtaining programming might exist.
The numbers show that people are willing to fork over $2+ for a 15 second ring tone (that -could- be obtained for free with a little effort), so it is no suprise that people with pay $2 for TV content. - wwwdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11.99 per show isn't bad considering that you DON'T HAVE TO WATCH COMMERCIALS! Instead of getting revenue from commercials they are getting revenue from us....which isn't a bad thing. 1.99 isn't bad if you have a decent job. I would like to see a subscription based service.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vintage rocks
Wow, Dragnet is back! And other vintage shows - This is just like 1956 Hollywood television! all the pre-48s are now vintage NCB - any other film nuts know what I'm talking about? - SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the same shows. available on your tv. for free. NOW WE GET TO PAY FOR THEM OH MY GOD YES LET ME GIVE APPLE SOME MONEY FAST!
It's amazing what people will throw their money away on these days. i dont even watch these shows for free. - dearreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What most of you guys forget (or never knew in the first place) is that the TV Network that airs a show does not always own the show, just the rights to a certain number of broadcasts within a window of time. Production companies and distribution companies also get involved. NBC Universal is the parent company of the NBC and USA networks, but they don't own all the programming that airs on those networks. "Friends", for example, while it aired on NBC, was produced by Warner Bros. "My Name Is Earl" is produced by 20th Century Fox. I'm pretty sure Sony owns "Seinfeld." TV is an incestuous business... if there's a show you want to see on iTunes, go check out the Company Credits on IMDb to find out where to send your petitions.
- ikillkenny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the idea of having access to the back catalogues of good shows to catch up on the episodes you missed, and I don't mind paying $1.99 to watch them without commercials and increasingly ubiquitous on-screen advertising. But from the one episode of Lost I downloaded, the video quality is just bad. I think if they offered a higher quality version for 25 to 50 cents more it would end up being a better value.
- Whatchamacallit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I Digg it because it's only going to get better. Just need a slightly higher resolution and all the episodes not just some of them (Partial Seasons are no good) also need a way to burn several episodes to DVD!
Amazon's got the BSG Season 1 includ. mini series for a reasonable price and it's DVD quality plus bonuses, interviews, etc. Season 2 is due out in January 2006. Season 3 starts in January as well. I will be using my TiVo to watch Season 3 and buying both Season 1 and 2.
Will I download an episode via iTunes? Only if my TiVo screws up! However, if iTunes had a higher resolution version available using bittorrent technology and allowed me to burn to DVD I would buy it all from iTunes if the price was less then the DVD collections. - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just checked Sci-Fi's episode archives for Battlestar Galactica and it appears that all of the episodes listed in the archive are on the iTMS. I think the only reason the first season appears as a partial season is because the mini series that kicked it off (although a separate entity) kicked off the series. So season 1 is really a complete season just as long as you also include the mini series. All of the episodes in season 2 also matched Sci-Fi's archives. As far as I can tell, we aren't being short changed, and if we are it's not intentionally by Apple.
Oh one more thing. NBC should bring in "V" in the vintage section. (No pun intended) - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It amazes me that even if tv companies are worried about losing revenue on their big/current shows by having them for download and therefore losing advertising revenue, that they don't just put up the myriad of shows that got cancelled after only a handfull of episodes. It's not as if many of them will ever come out on dvd, it doesn't cost them anything really, and since it's a new market you're likely to get a load of idiots downloading them just because they can.
- ozjmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Shalabi
Ah, the grey area: My PVR screws up, or I forget to record a show. I pay for cable so I download it. Ethical? Yes :) Legal? Unfortunately not :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is downloading a TV show stealing if you pay for cable?
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Getting more and more compelling. For those of you that think a buck or two is too expensive, think about all the time you save vs. downloading from some other source, and second, plenty of people drop two bucks on a latte or snacks on a daily basis without even thinking about it.
- gpig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2need in uk pls! along with complete BBC archive, i dont think thats 2 much to ask for!
- jdeneut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else notice how much longer the "hour" shows were 20 years ago? Knight Rider was 48-50 minutes long, while Battlestar Galactica is never more than 44 minutes. That's about 10 more commercials per hour when originally broadcast, which is why I never watch TV without a DVR.
- phpkerouac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11.99 is too much per show.
the low res is no good. Im not trying to populate an iPod - but my home theatre PC. Address these two and i will be a loyal customer and only pay the cable company for broadband.
for now i can torrent the episodes i want - get HD + Dolby 5.1. You cant beat that deal. use the grass roots tv on demand network.
itunes is moving in the right direction, but i am not going to early adopt it in its current state. - saintwanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet.
i might as well digg. - Permanent4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0REMINDER:
Battlestar Galactica is NOT on over-the-air free TV. If you want to watch it, you still have to pay for it, either by paying for cable/satellite or paying for the download. Legally speaking, anyway.
I agree with an earlier poster. If Apple offered these shows in 480p, it would be a much better deal, no matter how good it might look on a regular TV now. - UriMcFlurry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BATTLESTAR GALACTICA!!!!!!!! That makes me so happy!!
also, USA has jumped aboard. Hopefully this means that when The 4400 and The Dead Zone broadcast the new season this summer, they will be there too... yesssssss.... - zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AWESOME
I Want this for my itunes in Canada! - revoltor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bittorrent FTW
- bigboludo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still costs way more than the dvds of the shows--and not good enough resolution to watch on a monitor or tv. Bittorrent is still where I'll get mine.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Free shows are better. I'd rather watch an episode of Tiki Bar than pay 2 bucks for some crap I can torrent.
- diggydog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will they come out with something like AirTunes but for Video so I can send these to the TV?
- yikiad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0call me old-fashioned, but refuse to pay for something that comes for free over the air. i love my tivo's...
- Cybrwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Battlestar Galactica! Frakking, yes!
Now, I can start supporting the show, without having to buy cable! WOOT! - HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CONAN O'BRIEN!
Why is the price on those so messed up? Bit-Torrent! - GoatHerderEd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where is fox? Prison Break could make lots of money!
- glowcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really like the idea of only supporting the shows you like. But this still has a way to go before it is worth the price.
- Matteo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes! The Office and Conan, sweeeeeeet!
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not going to pay for a show that I can record for free on a DVR and then transfer to any device of my choosing. Legally too.
- blarneystone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The prices are insane. I'm still gonna use Bittorent. Maybe I'll download some shows when the prices become reasonable.
I just found out you can use the program IMtoo and create .mov files and watch them on your Ipod (you can download a free version of IMtoo on Piratebay.org). - jekins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bluestarr: Nobody's forcing you to buy anything so where's the hostility coming from? It's not like their trying to trick you into buying it. I don't see "bargain" written anywhere either. You really think Apple's gonna make the bulk of the dough on this? It's still all the entertainment companies. Apple's strategically hooking them into some agreements so they have distribution control. Once Apple has main distribution control, they have the power to do everything, including lower the prices or completely provide an affordable alternative to your satellite.
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the UK iTMS there is now a link to 'TV Shows' which is displayed in the movie trailer section - although when you click on it you're taken to the browse menu so i now suspect that the UK iTMS may have TV content coming sooner than i thought it might.
- marosnax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Battlestar is the *****, can't wait till January 6 with season 2 starts up again.
- cptshamrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I got one episode of lost off of the store. They need to triple their filesize to get some decent quality. And also 1.99 is a bit too much if you wanna watch an entire season, maybe .99 just like everything else on itunes would be good.
- timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy crap! Those smart cookies at apple must know thier geeks. Battle star and knight rider that's awesome for the 80's geek like myself.
- SQUIDwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t!!! They have Battlestar Galactica!
- Laughingman234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HELL YES!! MONK!! GO APPLE!
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hrtmnstrfr, I thought I was the only one that does that. LOL I don't use a Mac, but I do the same thing. Lost looks great on a regular run of the mill analog TV. The only time it doesn't look so hot is durring dark scenes, but otherwise it's broadcast TV perfect with out the static and the commercials. I have no complaints about the res here.
- dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did he say Battlestar Galatica? A+ Digg, i might get an ipod video now.
- mycroft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes! Tiki TV - fun _and_ educational!
BSG is good, too, as is Monk! :) - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the people that want to buy it, great, have fun. But I'll be damned if I pay for this crap again. My monthly sat bill is enough thank you. I'll just recored my shows with the aid of El Gato. ***** the T.V. companies and ***** Apple* for selling this ***** and calling it a bargain.
*looky here, I'm not the fanboy everybody thought I was. _|_, - cptpike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Adam-12. To bad there's no A Team yet.
