- dfbills, on 07/08/2008, -0/+13Push requires 2.0
- colincornaby, on 07/08/2008, -0/+9It doesn't. You have to upgrade to 2.0.
- loconet, on 07/08/2008, -1/+9Let me guess, I will have to pay $39.99 more on the Rogers plans to access this feature.
- Pittance, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7ABP finally blocked the one thing worth viewing ads for.
- SuperIntendo, on 07/08/2008, -5/+11Finally apple's online service will really be worth the fee.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -1/+5Agreed. But Gmail, Google Calendar, etc. don't push stuff to an iphone.
Without an iphone, mobileme is absolutely worthless. With an iphone, it's probably worth the $5.75/month. - MacHarborGuy, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4mother, father, son, daughter, third child...
you want your dog to have an account? not trying to be argumentative, but 5 seems like a good average number for a "family". of course your situation may be different - fanboydcs, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Gmail is awesome but it doesn't have push, it would be awesome if they included that. Also they need to enable imap by default.
I am truly going to love the push calendars and contacts! no more backups - mirq, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Take from the MobileMe FAQs:
What will I need for my iPhone or iPod touch to use MobileMe?
You will need to update to software version 2.0 or later to enable push mail, push contacts, push calendar, and push bookmarks. This software update will be available when MobileMe launches.
Does that mean we get 2.0 tonight? - r3zonance, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3"Yeah, there's seven of us. I have to run a domain just to manage all the computers and users."
No you don't HAVE TO run a domain, you're just a little too geeky. :P - wobegon, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3You do realize the switch is optional, right? Apple has no need to change your email address from @mac.com to @me.com. It's not costing them any money either way, so it's also unlikely they'll ever force you to change it in the future.
- SuperIntendo, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3your paying for alot more than that.
The main reason is the 20GB of off-site backup. Sure your external hard drive might save your documents if your computer crashes, but what about if your house burns down and both are inside? - chadisawesome, on 07/08/2008, -3/+5I've had .mac for a year now, and what a waste of money, I was planning on canceling it, but these updates make it seem worth it again, I'll have it for one more month before I have to decide on renewing.
Anyone with .mac currently hate the web version of mail? I keep my gmail up all day in my first tab, but for whatever reason .mac logs me out every ten minutes, and even the log-in screen takes way too long to load up... these are problems I hope they fix. - earnjam, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2but doesn't have push functionality (EDIT: Argh, beat me to the punch)
- sayguh, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3I hope the iDisk speeds get better... Its pretty much unuseable in it's current state
- xero9, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2So don't buy it. I personally love push email. And with Robbers' insane data prices, having my phone NOT check for mail every 15 minutes will save me that much more in bandwidth. But hey, it's not for everyone.
- MacHarborGuy, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2it will be a great addition, but I have been using the .Mac service for years now. Having that backup solution that is integrated into the MacOS is just something that I like. Sure there are other ways to do the same thing, but not without the configuration and work involved, and honestly, I'll that a streamlined solution over heavy configuration. Same reason I use MAMP on the Mac instead of installed MySQL/PHP/Apache via the terminal.
- SPECOPS, on 07/09/2008, -1/+3I have a home phone line too - I can just wait until get home to make calls - or in an emergency have some person dial 911 for me. But I still own a cell phone.
- aaeyers, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3Obviously some people do, or they wouldn't make the front page. Go ahead and block these stories if you don't want to see them, we sure as hell won't miss you.
- wobegon, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Gmail is free because of advertising. MobileMe is ad free, thus it costs money.
$100/year is pretty reasonable considering it's one of the few services of its kind; Microsoft's Exchange is considerably more expensive and designed for businesses, not the average consumer.
I hope they implement push services into other apps in the future. I'd love to create a website in iWeb that featured "push articles" so users wouldn't have to refresh the page, and each article could feature "push comments" so discussions wouldn't require people refresh the page in order to see new responses, they'd simply be pushed using AJAX. If my RSS reader pushed news to me, I'd be floored. :D - FitFinlay, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2"What will I need for my iPhone or iPod touch to use MobileMe?
You will need to update to software version 2.0 or later to enable push mail, push contacts, push calendar, and push bookmarks. This software update will be available when MobileMe launches."
That's from Mobileme FAQ. I think we might be seeing 2.0 on that day also. - wobegon, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2You're also paying because MobileMe's push email is ad free, unlike Gmail.
- bpeacock22, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3I held out on .Mac because there was no calendering and, like others have said, why pay for email. But now, it's push email, calendar, and contacts is exactly what I need to seamlessly sync my work comp, home mac, and iphone. I'll miss Gmail's conversation-style filing and labels, but I won't miss the double syncing I had to do with calendar and email (though IMAP recently made that a tad less annoying).
I went ahead and got a trial of .Mac in order to claim a @mac.com address. Like many veteran .Mac users, @me.com is a little to "childish" for professional purposes. I understand Apple's decision, wanting to reach PC users too, who don't necessarily want to be identified as @mac.com, but the new @me.com is not for me. Also got an activation key on Amazon.com for way cheaper than $99 and was told my multiple Apple CSRs that it will still work after the change, so I'm feeling pretty good about this transition. :) - salter84, on 07/10/2008, -0/+112:23 pm on thursday mobile me is still down... what gives
- richardhenry, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1you.com was taken.
- SPECOPS, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1ugh, mrpower@me.com ?
- Ebeach, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3Started using it when it was iTools and was free. Still using it.
Loved having my mac.com email on my resume. Sparked discussions in interviews. Def NOT looking forward to using me.com. Sounds lame. - richardhenry, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I like me.com better.
- SPECOPS, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1forward your gmail to your mobileme account, use imap with gmail to send.
- dpowre, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1its alright, i knew that would get buried into oblivion anyway.
- SPECOPS, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Amazon had .mac for $69 - days after mobileme was announced they upped it to 89.99 - supply and demand 101 I guess.
- superkendall, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3The new version of .Mac mail looks WAY WAY better. So on that front you may be happy.
- gettarat, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1Finally apple's online service will really be worth the fee.
http://externalharddrivereviews.org/ - xsecretfiles, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1You actually have to read the fine print
"With the exception of .Mac mail accessed via desktop application, iphone or ipod touch" - mserna23, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I hate the speeds for iDisk. I'm using dropbox right now and I'm lovin' in. 2 GB of storage only, but it's still in BETA. Will buy more storage when its out for release.
- hotsoda, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3It's amazing you can say that without using the service. You must be physic!
/sarcasm - saralovemuffins, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Apple automatically upgrades .Mac users to Mobile Me.

"Introducing MobileMe. Your automatic .Mac upgrade at no extra charge.
It’s everything you love about .Mac — and so much more."
What is going to happen to my .Mac subscription?
Your .Mac subscription will be automatically upgraded to MobileMe at no additional cost. - xero9, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I read somewhere on Apple's site that you have 9 months to activate, so depending on when you're parents bought it, you might be getting close. Something to consider.
- MacHarborGuy, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2I have had .Mac since the service started, no complaints here. To each his own though.
- Mjeacoma, on 07/08/2008, -7/+8Gmail is better and free
- nickspohn, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1It's also when you buy the new iPhone.
- saralovemuffins, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I use an FTP client with WebDAV access to log into iDisk. It's WAY faster. I don't even mount iDisk on my desktop anymore, I just use Transmit.
- BIGBEN363, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Yea, it'll all work just fine. The old .Mac codes will still activate a MobileMe account.
- stevene, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1You only save $30 when you buy a new Mac, not when you buy an iPhone.
- MacParrot, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1My complaint about .mac's domain forwarding is that it doesn't include a unique url with each page. It DOES show the link that you are going to before you click (with most browsers anyway), but once you are there all you see is the default domain name. I'm certainly not an expert on making web pages or dealing with page management, but you should be able to give a clean link based on your preferred domain name instead of something like this:
http://web.mac.com/gserle1/macparrot.com/ParrotBlo ... (yes, this is a real link. NOT promoting my stupid site, this is just an example)
I would prefer that it be like this:
http://www.macparrot.com/blogs/wtf_apple.html (NOT a real link)
Of course if I was better at creating web pages I wouldn't be using iWeb or my current favorite SandVox. I actually do like iWeb. It's the easiest wysiwyg web tool I've found (which includes SandVox, GoldFish, Rapid Weaver, and FreeWay), but it is severely crippled unless you use it with .mac. Many of it's easier to use features WON'T work unless it's saddled with Apple's service. SandVox works pretty well (personal example http://www.machippy.com ), but can be difficult to customize. RapidWeaver is nice once you have the right (paid for) plugins, but if you're going to spend that kind of money you're better off with FreeWay which has most of those kinds of tools built-in.
The best thing that can be said for .mac (and it's the reason I keep renewing each year) is the integration with OS X and the iLife/iWork apps.
Lastly (and I swear I'll shup up soon), many have complained about the name change. Why Apple did it is obvious. How many non-Mac users would be interested in paying for a service named after Apple's computers? Most people buying an iPhone are probably not Mac users and it's never a good idea to possibly insult your potential user base (Mac vs PC ads aside) with a service named after something many of them don't want.
Digg me down for my opinions if you must, but the links in this message were merely meant to show as an example and not meant for blogspam. Sorry if I offended - thinkdifferent, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1AT&T always charged for SMS. Some plans included some in the package, but they were never "free". The same plan that was part of iPhone 1.0 now costs $5/month & gives 200.
- wobegon, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2Right...except the iPhone has surpassed every smartphone but RIM's established Blackberry in market share.
- paloooz, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Other than Yahoo Push, our only options are IMAP and POP.
