wow... - Amishplumber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, it shows how little Microsoft really cares about this though, they used a picture of an ibook for the macbook pro!
http://www.officeformacsweeps.com/prizes.aspx - clairmont, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'd say Dvorak called it.
- Qwertyasd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hey, why not check the rules for a change: "This is a trade promotion and is not open for entry by members of the general public."
Nothing to see here. - MaxFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not only that, but most of us can't enter it anyways....read the fine print on the qualifier for entering...ya gotta either be a small business owner or maintain a home office...
- KuroiAme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I write it: "ipod". Taken the other way round, it gives you: "podi". What's the color of your "podi"?
;-)"
Ummm...ipod backwards is dopi, nice try though. - asjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We have good fun playing up the the Apple vs Microsoft rivalry but in truth these companies have a relationship not unlike many competitors in technology. Sometimes they are opponents and sometimes they are collaborators. It's just business.
As far as the MacBU -- I really appreciate their work. I like using the Office apps on the Mac and Excel is superior to the weaker offering in AppleWorks which I had been using since 1988. - flap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1og course they are friendly...they want to sell software, and if mac died out then icrosoft would be a monopoly.
- computerdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Two links for entering, only one actually points to the aspx page that works. It's not the one with the graphic, it's a simple text link. I entered, my wife wants a Mac laptop for school and 3D modeling in Geology.
- Robinh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Entry in the Promotion is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are at least 18 years of age and who are owners or agents of a lawfully organized and operating (a) business organizations with between 1 and 49 employees and/or with between 1 and 24 personal computers, (b) sole proprietorships and/or unincorporated professionals operating income-generating home office-based businesses and (c) employees who maintain home offices as telecommuters or as after-hours workers (individually and including all eligibility and participation criteria herein, a “Participant”)."
No digg. - calums, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Only open to US residents? That sucks... I don't care that it seems a bit hypocrital to give away Apple stuff through M$, it's free stuff, why does it matter?
- gaudior, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Microsoft likes selling software. The Macintosh version of Office has always been a step ahead of the windows version. They like selling Office for Macintosh. This is a promotion for Office:mac.
How does this giveaway imply any dark secrets? Has the submitter been drinking the Dvorak koolaid again? - otomo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Cool, I entered. But "more friendlier"???? The more is completely unnecessary given the suffix "er" on friendly.
It is like saying they are more more friendly to each other. Drop the adverb. - AromaKat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um... apparently nobody here know that mactopia is a place Microsoft made and maintains to make apple look bad in numerous ways. i was under the impression that that was old news... but.. OK??? google it.
- kowgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I click the "enter," "prizes," or, well, any link on that page, it gives me a 404... fun.
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dvorak forgets this: Microsoft can't afford to have Apple not continue developing OSX - it's one of their few defenses in monopoly proceedings.
AND Microsoft already did one of these '5 year comitments' to continue developing Office - back in 1997 when they invested the 150 million in Apple - which, by the way, if they still have the stock, is now worth something like 1000% of what they paid for it. - surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you get a 404 error on the entry.html link, try this:
http://www.officeformacsweeps.com/entry.aspx - smeager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft doesn't own 25% of Apple. Please people get your facts right.
Back in 1997, after Apple and Microsoft entered into their patent cross license and technology agreements Microsft purchased 150,000 shares of Apple Series A nonvoting convertible preferred stock. The KEY here is "perferred stock" not common stock. They had additional rights with there 150,000 shares but gave that up when they converted all the shares in 2000 and 2001 to common stock which gained them about 18.2 million shares (Apple SEC Filings 2003). Which most has been sold off by now
That may seem like a lot but considering Apple has about 1.8 billion shares that leaves about 1% own by Microsoft considerably less then the 25% everybody spits out.
The leading share holders :
MAJOR DIRECT HOLDERS: LEVINSON, ARTHUR with 253,015 shares
TOP INSTITUTIONAL HOLDERS: FIDELITY MANAGEMENT & RESEARCH CORP with 58,552,916
TOP MUTUAL FUND HOLDERS: FIDELITY GROWTH COMPANY FUND with 15,435,000
Microsoft dosen't even rate in the top ten of any list. So please everybody who spits ***** out of there mouths all the time please get your facts straight before you say anything. I love watching people stick there foot in there mouths, leaves a bad taste.
- bonzooznob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UnDigg.
USA only. no Canadian participation.
Grrrrr..... - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awww the dreaded 404
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MORE FRIENDLIER!!! YES!!! GOD I WAS WAITING FOR THE DAY WHEN MORE FRIENDLIER PEOPLE WALKED THE EARTH!
- pcronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares about the grammar, let's focus on the fact that a worldwide company (MS) is giving away another worldwide company's product(Apple) and the contest is only open to the lower 48!
The worldwide consumers should start a write in campaign about this contest... - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grr... US ONLY!!!!
- F1R3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Hey.. if you don't think you can win don't enter!.. the more you enter the less chance I have! :P
I can understand them trying to promote the mac version of their software.. but it seems like they would rather try this the other way around, giving away windows PCs to people who buy the mac software. But i suppose we are all supposed to be thinking this is one step closer to windows on macs or something.. - ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0entered...already won.
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha, microsoft has a broken link there:
it's http://www.officeformacsweeps.com/entry.aspx not .html as linkted to from the enter-pic!
See, don't you like the times better when all pages ended in html? ;) - celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know I'm not gonna win anything but I just entered anyway
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only for members of united states, sif leave us aussies out again. You guys are lame. Reported story as lame and undugg.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awww the dreaded 404
- chiller2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's kind of funny to watch people bicker between Microsoft and Apple. Both OSs have issues, and both versions of Office have issues. I wouldn't say either was "ahead" of the other (what exactly is the benchmark for "ahead"?) except for the time between major releases, e.g. the time between Office 12 and the next release of Office for Mac.
As for being bitter that the sweepstakes does not go beyond the borders of the U.S., well, international laws regarding contests can be a pain. For example, it is my understanding (and this was a few years ago when I encountered this) that Canadian contests can't "give away" prizes, but must be won through skill (many contests loop-hole by asking entrants to answer a fairly basic math question). I'm in no way claiming to be an expert, I am just recalling this from an experience at a give away contest at a retail store that had "For Canadian Residences:" section. So, regional laws like that and laws regarding taxes make going international difficult at best. Most companies get around it by saying "void where prohibited" so it would suck to win the grand prize only to find out local law prevents you from claiming it. - cablemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd be pissed off if I was a grand prize winner....and all I won a wireless keyboard and mouse ~_~
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ForbesBingley: I have _never_ had office crash windows. Office itself may crash every now and then...but it has never taken windows down with it.
- trooz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was interesting! When I clicked on the link, it crashed Safari!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0* Must be 18 years or older to enter
GARRRR - knid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They're the mostest friendlierest!
- mrops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is off topic, but when will people realise USA is not the whole of Internet, infact they are still lagging behind when it comes to consumer internet. I always see offer X (valid onle in UK). But on the other hand I never see offer X(valid only in US). arrrrrrgh.....
- nicarley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I entered a contest like this on Microsoft's site a few years back around the release of Windows ME and actually got sent a commemorative copy. I wish it would have been something more interesting, but at the time it was neat, until I figured out what kind os system ME was..
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, they shouldn't have posted this. Now more people know about it and, correspondingly, the poster will have less of a chance of winning.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Something I couldn't help but chuckle at...
http://www.officeformacsweeps.com/images/home_button01.gif - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0could be they are trying to get rid of useless crap lying around the office. Who knows... maybe they'll try to give away Bill too
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"MSFT quietly stopped releases of Media Player for Mac recently. Not sure how close they all really are."
Just business. MP for Mac was stagnating, so it was killed. Happens all the time on both sides of the fence. Besides, with the advent of iTunes, there just wasn't a need. How many Mac users are using WMP over iTunes? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I remember showing a friend Office for Mac.
During the course of the brief show & tell, Word bottomed out.
My friend giggled and whispered: "Looks like an alt delete to me!", or whatever the key combination is.
I looked at him and smiled. I just re-launched Word from the Dock and all was well.
He looked puzzled at first, then quite annoyed. Then he said: "So how come Office didn't kill your Mac, then?"
Me: "Because it's a Mac and not Windows!", I exclaimed, with some glee, I might add.
To which he said: "If that was a PC, it would have just crashed. Simple as that. Why can't Microsoft make Office do that for Windows?""
OMG... I hate these FUD statements.... I cannot even recall the last time an application took down my XP box. I run VMware, Visual Studio, all kinds of network admin apps, veritas and sms consoles etc, and often at the same time and my box, though it slows down, has RARELY crashed. Let alone MS Office doing the deed..... - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ForbesBingley,
My intel iMac crashes pretty much as often as windows did for me pretty much for the same reasons. I'm a big fan of OSX but I also concede it's really just another (one of the better anyway) OS. - bbrad2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MSFT quietly stopped releases of Media Player for Mac recently. Not sure how close they all really are.
- MacMini214, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I seriously don't see this as being a huge deal. I mean look at Macworld every year, Roz Ho gives her speech about the MBU being great and that Office is doing well, and now with the 5 year agreement. As everyone else said, they just want to push Office for Mac.
- timko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am also one of those that think Apple and MS are closer than other people would like to believe. However, I don't think the fact that they are giving away Macs as part of a competition confirms this. Firstly, it helps MS sell more copies of their Apple version of Office. Secondly, it would be pretty stupid if they gave away a PC notebook instead wouldn't it? (the Apple version of Office won't run on it - duh).
- OperatorNo9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure if it is the might of Microsoft's servers or the low click-through rate due to lameness, but no digg effect.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They just want to sell copies of Office, they make more money from selling office than they do from selling Windows.
- dickyducky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0US only :/
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea it's called promoting their products.
Yes, they have always done this.... -
