- standalonematt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31I used to be a Windows user (always a bit of a UNIX geek though), then got a Mac and used both for a bit, but now I have adjusted and am Mac only - so let me redo your list.
Windows = loads of software(some good, lots crap)/mainstream/lots of support, but it needs it
Linux = agreed, kicks ass on servers
Mac = limited software (getting better all the time, but but a high percentage of it is top-line software, better than anything on any other system so - quality over quantity (elite software)
I don't think mac users are elitist they are just right and some people can't accept it. When the best argument against OS X is "but what about games" - the argument is lost and complaining about elitist mac users is the only resource.
I really don't care what system people use - I happen to hold the opinion that my Mac provides a better experience for what I want to do. Actually the only reason Windows and Microsoft piss me off is because of the friends and family who constantly call with issues/spyware/viruses - so even though I choose not to use their product, it still affects me. But shouldn't Windows users want Microsoft to make a better product too, and the Windows software developers to make software that approaches the quality of some of the mac stuff. Instead of agreeing with me and taking a critical aim on Microsoft and holding them accountable to make better software, they will just call me an Elitist mac user - but right now I can feel good about that - well until Linux catches up. - Godric, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18This article just quotes some anonymous person's blog. It even has quotes from the ***** comments section. What complete and utter BS.
- NtroP, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Yeah, read the article. It really is better than the snippet above.
- Tom_Riddle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14this is my favorite one:
"Apple is on a roll, and we've just given them enough time to get the next version of OS X out the door (whatever animal name it is going to be). And we can guess right now what their marketing push will be: Stop waiting for those guys who can't even copy our old stuff in time. Get the original from us -- we ship on time, we're shipping right now." - epicbard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Interesting, wonder if its authentic but:
Here's the blog they are talking about:
http://minimsft.blogspot.com/2006/03/vista-2007-fire-leadership-now.html#comments - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17So its a bunch of quotes by a bunch of people that were fired by MS about why vista sucks? That was totally unexpected.
I hate MS as much as the next guy, but this article is BS. MS employees would be putting their asses on the line for posting that stuff in the first place, not to mention the statements themselves are kinda... stupid. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I don't see why anyone would trust the authenticity of this. everyone knows MS employees hate windows, and it is from such a reputable source as a mac blog./sarcasm
reported as innacurate - craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I expected more diggers to read Mini-MS.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Some of our favorite comments to the article over on Mini-Microsoft, many of them presumably from Microsoft employees"
Presumably? It sounds more like a bunch of whiny teenagers. - eddieroger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You obviously don't know what a kernel is then. Linux/UNIX/OS X do not allow modifications to the kernel without root (Administrator) access and a password. Windows (pre-Vista that I can confirm) would let any process modify the kernel without permission. And, once the kernel is infected, the system is owned. Not that there aren't dumb OS X users out there who put their password in when it asks, but it makes you think why this great new app you downloaded needs Administrator access. That's what makes it insecure. Windows is an easy target for poor kernel protection. There are a ton of UNIX boxes that are web servers and make lovely targers (constantly online, open ports, etc), but its an exercise in futility.
- ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17"many of them presumably from Microsoft employees"
When the article you linked to said this I stopped caring. Talk about hearsay. - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Interesting point
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4microsoft... to their credit has always hired mac people to work in the mac unit. they consistantly put better versions of Office out for the mac than were available for windows. so, to have microsoft employees that like macs is not such a stretch.
and... i rarely give microsoft credit for anything... :D - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I guess you haven't seen WebObjects. In a lot of ways .net has borrowed a *LOT* from this (nextstep/openstep frameworks) but then again Apple/NeXT has done a terrible job of promoting it.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"even Apple has moved on from PC systems as their mainline revenue"
Sorry to burst your bubble but Apple's main source of income is still their computing hardware. I'd suggest you read some of Apple's Financial Reports. - jayf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Doesn't everybody at Microsoft own iPods or something? Don't they hide them from Bill when he floats by?
I think those switch ads really work. - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds more like a bunch of whiny shareholders.
Some of it seemed non-fiction in the actual article though, the comments are so strange and varied. The general mood seems to be "All right we're screwed for a timeline, lets at least get it out of the door."
Does anyone know how this affected MSFT stock? I remember apple's stock dropped 3% when analysts didn't see a ipod video at the last event. - skidooer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remember that Linux and MacOS X run on multiple architectures. That alone increases the difficulty of infection significantly. And, especially in the case of Linux, each install can be dramatically different from another which also increases the difficulty.
Even if Linux or MacOS X had a larger market share, and a severe vulnerability was found, the odds of it spreading to the extent we've seen with Windows are not very good.
Also, remember Apache? While enjoying a much larger market share than IIS, IIS historically is more prone to large scale attacks. - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What's more, even if they are Microsoft employees, their whiny statements don't add credibility to their cause. If you don't like the software, leave the company, then bitch.
- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah...
This might at best be read for the humor value. But it really is no more than reliable than fiction.
I reported the story. - wahooka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5i know this is ridiculous... no creditbility
obviously the person is creating a story out of nothing - zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ berean:
"I'd rather have real hardware and real options for a real price than spend tons on Apple's unstable and slow hardware."
Wow, consistantly you prove time and time again you know nothing of what you speak. Kudos for perseverance.
"Real hardware." Point to me what real hardware is, since Macs and PCs have near identical hardware.
"Real price." Oh its so horrible spending a bit more money for a machine with more polish and maturity. Oh, you know what lets demand that the Xbox360, PS3, and Revolution all come out for like $100.
"Apple's unstable and slow hardware." Obviously you haven't used a Mac in at least 5 years. Please actually inform yourself before you spew ignorant and horrendously inaccurate fud.
"This kind of screws those of us who don't just want an iTunes machine over."
Yeah cause we all know thats all Macs can do is run iTunes. Oh wait, what about that other 12,000 applications? Oh and the thousands more free open source projects. Oh of course all those millions of Macs in universities, film production studios, graphic designers, are all for iTunes.
"I want options, speed, low price, stable hardware, versatility...Vista is a joke, and Apple doesn't offer any of that. So, what...Linux?"
Apple offers some options, great speed, stable hardware, and you can be as versatile as you want to be with a Mac. If you're going to complain so much why don't you go out and build your own type of computer with your own cheap and powerful hardware by your production. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This whole comment rating system needs to be reformed ASAP, or removed entirely. The MS shills, Apple fanboys, and Linux fanatics are collectively blocking all negative comments about their idols.
I am serious when I say that MS is an unexciting company! I cannot imagine MS employees being excited about Vista. Except perhaps that it didn't crash today. - Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would a Microsoft employee be fired for such comments made by the "anonymous" posters? How does that article know that they are MS employees to begin with?
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in a *nix environment the *worst* (and take my word for it) that can happen is a virus deleting your entire home directory, the workstation is safe, so a good practice is:
1. Create 2 users (not admins) in addition to root.
2. Adjust your umask.
3. Work with one user account and go online with other account.
4. ensure that account that goes online does not have write/read access to files of other user account.
5. You have a work station that is 'solid like a rock', assuming you get a virus that deletes *all* the 'online account' cookies/files/prefs. who cares...it's only an 'online account'.
Escalation of privileges in *nix is extremely hard if not impossible and requires a hacker at heart with lots of *nix tool s expertise, which is not available in today's virus/worm/trojan creators. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's good, fire up the FUD machine like a good little microserf.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Sorry guys, but this article is really stupid.
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I love this quote:
"Apple is on a roll, and we've just given them enough time to get the next version of OS X out the door (whatever animal name it is going to be). And we can guess right now what their marketing push will be: Stop waiting for those guys who can't even copy our old stuff in time. Get the original from us -- we ship on time, we're shipping right now." - alexcharlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Believe it or no Flankk, Microsoft makes more than just Operating Systems. Many of the folks who work there work on other products within the company. While OSes may be their bread and butter, the people in MSN group don't want OS group's inability to ship on time tarnish the overall company's reputation.
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Fallacy: "The numbers of spy ware and viruses is in direct proportion to the number of users of the operation system." This old saw is probably promoted by Microsoft.
- pussfeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't get all this flaming. This article takes comments from a blog alot of MS employees post to.
Nothing more or less. Just some info on what may or may not be happening internally at MS, that people have to sort thru for themselves, just like with any other piece of info.
And do you doubt that many employees are pissed that Vista is being pushed back, on top of all the other changes and things that have been stripped out of the new release over the past few years?
This kinda bitching shows that MS has employee's who care enough to be pissed off when they feel like the management is keeping them from doing their jobs. Which is usually the case in corporate America. - b7j0c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1there is only one way out for MS: buy yahoo
no one cares about PC software anymore
even apple has moved on from PC systems as their mainline revenue
google is the company that is really staring down MS now
online is the future, MS is coming from behind and needs to buy leadership, it can't wait to grow it
no wonder MS already tried to buy yahoo once this year and was turned away for lowballing..... - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"many of them presumably from Microsoft employees"
Reported as inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Um...who cares about Mac OS X? I'd rather have real hardware and real options for a real price than spend tons on Apple's unstable and slow hardware. Microsoft isn't exicted about Mac, they're just not stupid enough to be excited about Vista, either.
This kind of screws those of us who don't just want an iTunes machine over. I want options, speed, low price, stable hardware, versatility...Vista is a joke, and Apple doesn't offer any of that. So, what...Linux? - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Pure BS.
"Microsoft employees are excited about Mac OS X."
Anonymous quotes are reported as Microsoft employees?
No Digg, report as inaccurate. - c0ugar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm trying to post a comment on this blog which asks "How do we know that the people above that are making these comments are in fact employees of Microsoft when I do not work for Microsoft and can make a post on this blog?"
This attempt failed. I could not post my comment as the image verification failed. Anyone else have any luck? - Foofy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Uh, the description is really misleading. It's just a bunch of anti-MS blog comments with a few that may have been written by Microsoft employees. As if there aren't a billion anti-Apple and Linux comments on the internet as well.
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Well, when it so damn simple to create spyware/adware and exploit Windows, why would you want to waste time on finding a way to get spyware on a (relatively) vastly more secure Macintosh?
- Leslie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes, there is the Linux kernel. However, I'm sure there are plenty of flaws, and if enough of malware/trojan, etc. coders jump on the Linux bandwagon, then more flaws will be discovered. There are probably many ways around the root/administration modification feature, they just haven't been discovered yet because of the lack of interest.
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Cause osx = Nextstep and all programmers love Nextstep. Too bad Apple bastardized it.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6you know mirunit, the zealots will not listen until burned (just like regular corporations, don't give a ***** until a break in). But, zealots usually have the case of "well linux is a more popular web server, why then do they not target them" AND I ASK, Windows 95, 98 and Windows NT are still around, and have lots and lots of unpatched exploirts, but you don't see them in the news anymore either. So, it's all about the numbers, like you said, and the status. If I wanted to hacking into ONE SINGLE APACHE web server running LINUX, I can, but why bother with just one at a time? Exactly. Now maybe they'll know, but I doub't they'll accept in their one-sided little brains.
- an0nym0us, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I've been using Mac since forever but the moment I sighted WinXP. I quickly switch to PC and never look back. Never been happier.
- blazingpie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1what ***** is this? The quotes are anonymous and 'presumed' to be from MS employees. Riiight... More likely its a bunch of Macfags stirring things up.
/linux-user
/no dig for ***** articles - fungible, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I don't hate MS too much, but you've gotta admit, that ***** is harsh. I've seen a lot of hate, but never that bad.
- mikm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2This'll win a Pulitzer hands-down.
/yhihf - vamsi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4hehe, nice work of satire there.. And I thought quality humor was dying on Digg.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13What else do they have to be excited about? I'm not sure if they can even get excited at all! Microsoft is one of the most mediocre, unexciting sucessful companies in history. When you think of Microsoft, you do not think of excitement! You think about bugs and spyware!
- Leslie, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6All this talk about Windows being really unsecure is nonsense. I bet OSX and Linux would have the same problem if they were to be mainstream, and windows was an alternate choice. Nevertheless, the fact is that majority of computer users out there are using Windows, and malware/trojans/etc. are being coded for it because of its manifold of users.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5it did make front page, STUPID.
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -22/+12If you think OSX is immune to spyware you are an idiot. Why would you make malware for an OS with only 9-10% marketshare, when you could have easy access to 90% of the OS maket of which many do not have patched systems.
