- ColinChapman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+61Who says Windows and Macs can't live in harmony.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45MS makes software. Contary to belief here on Digg, the two are not mortal enemies. As of now, MS can make some nice money off of the mac market now that it's easy to run windows on their machines.
- Tippis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Agreed. I fail to see what the issue is.
The iMac is an excellent piece of hardware. Why shouldn't Microsoft use it to show off their software -- especially if it runs that software as well as it does? - ifoundgodot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17While you're at it, can you translate "Mozart ma amputere penis" ?
It was one of the other news stories on that site, and I don't know about any of you, but it sort of frightens me... - Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Mozart må amputere penis" means "Mozart must have his penis amputated".
That's related to a previous Digg "Never give an iguana Viagra" - Ransomowris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Microsoft Norge"=Microsoft Norway. It's in the video.
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Two "Apple in Norway" diggs in a row... Yay for Norway, I guess.
- z3rr0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Apple is a HARDWARE company... they make the same money no matter which OS you run on the box. The cool thing about this is that Apple and Microsoft would *both* make money on this one. It counts toward Apple's market share as much as it does Microsoft's.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hey, a dual boot OSX/Windows setup still gives Microsoft a sale...well, from honest citizens.

""Why shouldn't Microsoft use it to show off their software" - Tippis
Contrary to contrary belief (CBTF) here on Digg, it's really not in Microsoft's best interests for Apple to sell more Macs. Really.
How many people are ultimately going to choose Windows once they've seen both running side by side on Apple hardware? Except for "quick reboot for gaming" purposes, I say not many. And those doing it just for gaming will likely be running pirated copies of Windows anyway.
People are naive if they believe that the dual-boot (or virtualization) capability on Macs is ultimately (i.e. long-term) good for Microsoft Windows sales."
I think you're forgetting Microsoft is a software company. It is in their best interests for people to buy ANY platform that may run their software. I don't think you average PC user is going to buy a Mac because they saw Windows on it and then not buy Windows, so I'm not seeing any loss of sales here really. - bluefighter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11As for translation, they are talking about improvements in Vista.
This video has really no connection with Mac, which makes it even more amusing :D - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Black box and Ivory, livin together in perfect Harmony! :P

The video is made by VG (Verdens Gang,"The world is spinning" loosely translated), Norways most selling newspaper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verdens_Gang). The iMac is one they normally use on their set. It is an interview with Microsoft's Vista boss in Norway, PC World Norways editor and VG's gaming expert. VGTV is an online TV offer from the newspaper, and they use Final Cut Pro to edit the video material...so that might be the reason why they use the iMac.
- MamaTux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Mozart ma amputere penis" is a story about an iguana in Antwerpen that has had an erected penis in a week and the vet wants to amputate the one erected penis. iguanas has 2 penises, so it should be able to maintain normal sexual activity after the operation.
Mozart is the name of the iguana btw :-) - t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7haha, I love that the Ransomowris knew that the video was from Norway, but had no idea what language was used in the video... hmmm, maybe it was Norwegian???
- Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's not a bad thing. Lots of people have Windows running on their Macs -- it's their gaming environment. You may not want to use something as (comparatively) clunky as Vista for productivity apps and such, but so long as vendors still insist require you to tithe to MS to play their games, might as well have the option.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13"The active and very helpful Mac community equates to snobbish people as such demonstrated on Apple's "I'm a Mac" commercials."
Please. Try speaking from experience and not from tired old stereotypes about which you have no real knowledge. - WZot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's an iMac. Not a cinema display/Apple monitor. The hardware in the computer is infact "in the monitor". http://apple.com/imac/
- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"People would use their Macs for creativity (iPhoto, Garageband, iMovie, etc) and use Vista for everything else."
Why would I do that when I happily use OS X for everything else?
BTW, I use Windows all day at work. I know exactly what I'm not missing.
Gaming, variety in software (not just one spreadsheet program, not just one antivirus), a huge, good freeware library, abundant support from multitudes of forums/FAQs? - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Vista on Macs is a Microsoft wet dream come true-- they can charge full price, and chances are if someone is willing to pay more for a mac they are just as likely to pay full-price for a copy of Windows.
I have a MacBook Pro and am considering buying Vista... I'd prefer to get the x64 version, but may have to hold off until support is there. - steven401, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Direct link:

Just put it into your download manager or whatever. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not a Mac monitor. It's an iMac computer. You know, the ones with the built-in display.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Apple wouldn't have 100% of the computer market, 95% of the world don't want to pay a premium for the Apple logo. If Apple competed with features and price against the average PC model then they would win, but after 30 years Apple still doesn't get this. The Mac Mini is cheap, but you get what you pay for, a cheap computer without any performance features (poor video, slow CPU, low RAM, small hard drive). Most PC's in the $600 range spank the Mac Mini. The iMac is comparable in the $1000 - $2000 range to PC's for spec's but then people don't want a computer with built in screen and few upgrade options and limited features. The only Mac that truely competes head to head with a PC is the Mac Pro, but starting at $2400 and ranging to $13,000, that is outrageous for most PC users used to a greater range of product pricing and component selection. Apple needs to sell a box like the Mac Pro with customizability options that can range in price from $800 to $3000+, build it up like a Dell, but that ain't going to happen. After 30 years they don't know a thing about how to compete against the PC which is why they stay in the single digit market penetration year after year regardless of how great their hardware and OS is.
Also, using OSX on a Mac for iLife software, and then Vista for everything else isn't a win for Apple. I mean, why not just sell iLife for Windows for $150. I mean, if the Mac is used for 5% of the time when someone wants to dabble in iLife, but ignored the rest of the time, why is this a win for Apple? - icecycles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nevermind that you have to know the password and the secret handshake to actually FIND the OS-less computer.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Doesn't matter, both Apple and Microsoft get paid, Apple doesn't gain any marketshare if you're running Windows.
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man, I love Norwegian. It's like Swedish, but funnier words.
- iduno871, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is nothing new...There's been multiple stories over the years of Microsoft using Macs to show off their softwares.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"No, Apple have lost."
How could you post this from 1998? - crimsonredmk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wait...they weren't using Mac OS X? But...it looked just like it...and did everything Mac OS X has been doing for years!
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's an iMac, not a monitor.
- Farkle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Apple Store in Milan has an iMac running Vista in it's showroom
Here's something unique to digg - the source:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37216 - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'll keep it short and sweet, since I'm off for the evening: The computer is my work computer, an 17" iMac. The reason it is being used in the clip is that my iMac was the only computer with Vista installed and we did not have enough time to set up another. Also, it looks good on the set.
Sincerely,
Pål
(The chubby guy in the lilliac couloured shirt).
PS: Kevin, I'm so sorry for missing the interview time in SF. No hard feelings? - aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i really like OSX. if i could get it without paying the Mac tax I would
(ok, so I can, but i mean legally) - ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just do not get Microsoft. They are a software company. Why are they not doing everything they can to sell as much software as possible. So what if Vista runs on a Macintosh? With Boot Camp on the horizon Microsoft should be falling over themselves to come out with a Vista Mac Edition. Sell it for $99 and 99% of every Mac owner would buy it. Bam! Over night Apple would have 100% of the hardware market and Microsoft would have 100% of the software market. People would use their Macs for creativity (iPhoto, Garageband, iMovie, etc) and use Vista for everything else.
I have been running Parallels on my iMac for the last 2 months and it is really pure heaven. This is almost the perfect computer. - spinemangler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its funny when they show the screen at about 55 seconds in, you see the cameraman casually move the camera up until the apple logo is no loger visible.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So they had to pay the OS X tax? Is there an option to get a Mac without an OS?
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -15/+17Wait, what? How is this at all a triumph for Apple / Macs?
You may not realize this, but Microsoft doesn't make hardware. They make software. Running Microsoft on a Mac? So what? If anything, it is a loss for Macs (they chose NOT to run OSX). - pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is exactly what happened.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ransom
"and when they boot it up and see OSX, they won't want to buy vista"
Are you kidding? The first thing I'd do is put vista on. My friends seem content enough with it on their macbooks and macbook pros. - bunnybash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lol they actually do try to hide the apple symbol, but the camera man knows the he cannot jerk the camera around, instead he settles on the screen for one a second, realizes that the apple logo is at the bottom of the screen and quickly starts to pan up till the apple logo is no longer on screen...
perhaps the TV show only had apple computers on hand to demo it on, and microsoft just wanted to demo the software so didnt fight too hard on the issue... who knows these days with all the contracts and sponserships and exclusive deals and crap that go on... - Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Thats like putting linux on an iMac, sure they compete, but there inst really to much competition.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Whats wrong with this? This is Microsoft's biggest win, running Windows on a Mac. I proves that after 30 years of Apple creating proprietary hardware to complete with the PC, eventually the PC proved to be the most robust and advanced hardware out there. Apple gave up trying to be different and just built a nicer looking PC. Microsoft running on a Mac is a slap in the face to Apple which is why Microsoft probably did it.
Windows running on a Mac just openned up 5% more of the market to Windows, meaning that Windows can run on like 100% of desktop consumer level desktops available today. - Konstantino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's right. Who really cares if they run Windows on a Mac? Last time I checked, Microsoft was no hardware-maker (at least for computers).
- michaelwright, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just for clarification, future posters...
The iMac... is an all-in-one computer and monitor. Not just a monitor. Please stop making comments to the effect of "It's a mac monitor," implying that it is also not an iMac. Because it is. Some people who decry Apple's products should actually read about them to get their facts correct.
http://www.apple.com/imac
In any case...
Microsoft Windows on a Mac can only do wonders for Apple's hardware AND software marketshare... assuming most users will default to Mac OS X after using it alongside Windows for any period of time. - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"When you name yourself microsoft and you consider apple as a strong competitor"
I don't think they consider apple a strong competitor in the computer market, mp3 player market very much so but not the computer market. Apple market share only recently surpassed Windows 2000 and even that was mostly because of Windows 2000 users moving to XP, not because of apple growth. The strongest competitor to Vista by far for years to come will be Windows XP. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dont be dumb
- NWFackler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was the most boring software preview I've ever seen. I actually fell asleep during the first two minutes. The whole language barrier may have helped too. : )
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Windows = software, apple = hardware and software. Apple does advertise the ability to run windows on their computers. I don't see the big deal.
- Meegeekai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, what a response. This has to be touching nerves somewhere.
A couple of points;
- Apple is a hardward company???; well you could say that. They do make some damn nice stuff, but I would only concede that point if you consider that integration of Mac OS to the hardward is seamless. That is the beauty of the Mac, which makes MS "only" a software company. That should be the focus here, not that Apple is just a hardward company, but that MS is just a software company.
- The fact that Vista runs on a Mac is interesting, but having just installed XP MCE on a my MacBook, running under Parallels, it is still just that interesting. It only proves that Apple continues to dominate through a holistic approach to softward/hardware integration.
- After running XP on my Mac desktop (not in dual boot, but in native on the Mac OS X desktop in a window), so far the only thing I can think to try out is open my Steam account and see if I can play DOD Source. I mean whats the point ffs?? Maybe there are still some specific apps that only run on Windows that you need (besides games), but I am having a real hard time thinking why I need to have this other then the gee whiz factor when I have a dual boot Vista, XP MCE machine sitting at home with all the graphics and memory goodness to frag myself into a stupor. -
