- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Please Microsoft all we want is webcam I cant stand aMSN :(
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26All I can say is it's about time some of these features were added, and put A/V in it already you bastards. Stop crippling the Mac versions already.
The explanation on A/V and why it isn't in the Mac version yet are just silly.
"Right now, Windows Live Messenger (WLM) and Live Communications Server (LCS), are not quite in sync on their audio and video technologies."
They seem to be in sync for the windows version do they not?
Like I said, stop crippling the Mac version. - m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -4/+24And the rest of us just used Adium anyway ;)
http://adiumx.com/ - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Adium is still better even if you only use the MSN network...
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You need a hug.
*hugs* - sexycatsinhats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Don't forget Microsoft crippled Windows Media Player for the Mac until they stopped making it.
- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10You run a 2nd operating system (slowing down the computer a good bit) just so you can message your buddies?
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Usually I would bash Microsoft's product like everyone else on Digg. But Adium has problems sending messages at times, where Microsoft Messenger always sends the messages. Now only if they would support folder sharing and other windows live features.
- SPLASTiK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6GAIM? aMSN?
- dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Wow this is actually pretty slick, I'm almost impressed by microsoft on this one, seems they took parts of all the popular Mac MSN clients and bundled them together
I hate to say it but its pretty damned slick - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think MS does a pretty good job at Messerger builds, actually. I've tried all the MSN-supported IM clients but I keep coming back to MSN Messenger. Nice job, Microsoft. I would like to see cam support, however.
- necromancerr, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12Um....who ***** cares? Adium is far better.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Messenger for Mac is lame. It's gotten better, but it's still bloated and won't speak or see. If I *need* to talk to people on msn, Adium is better. I just wish iChat did msn, without having to do the jabber workaround.
- greatcaffeine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Until M$ puts video chat in Messenger for Mac, I see no reason to put it on my hard drive.
Adium for the win! - laserdisc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's so odd Microsoft would do such a ho-hum job on the Mac MSN messenger, when they're trying to woo Mac users over with their Office products and such. I feel almost sorry for the Mac Office crew at MS, they're so apologetic and really seem to want to excel in showing MS can write Mac apps well.
- jasoncps, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8This is typical Microsoft crippleware for OS X. Come on Microsoft, I can understand that you dont want to make it quite as good as the Windows version but this is so much worse. It takes forever to connect, has no video conferencing, still doesnt do winks, nudges, handwriting, etc. Also this application places the same annoying 'Microsoft User Data' folder in the Documents folder in your home directory. When are they going to learn to put it in the Library folder where it belongs and where every other developer on the planet puts it!! There is an Application Support folder for a reason boneheads. Are they brainless or just dont give a crap? Bottom line: Get Adium now.
- zosobaggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just got a Mac, and I've been using Adium. And...I don't like it. I think it's clunky and kind of ugly. I'll use it still if this MSN is about as good as the last one (awful).
- frukt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Adium is based on gaim's core, libgaim. And libgaim only supports file transfers through a server for the MSN protocol, not true P2P transfers. Add P2P file transfers to libgaim and thousands of people will be grateful to you.
- BigEasy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8WARNING if you DON'T have an intel-based Mac: I just installed this and it appears to be buggy as hell right now. It refuses to sign on or even allow me to cancel a sign-in. In fact, it doesn't even like QUITTING. Then it crashes for no reason. Thanks for breaking my Messenger, Microsoft! Looks like it's time to download Adium!
- samd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I don't think it's worth even closing adium to test it."
Exactly the case. - etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This just goes to show the MS doesn't care about the Mac platform. I'm really surprised they even released this as a Universal Binary. MS just doesn't GET the Mac platform - it still has this Microsofty feeling in the code and feel of the product that tends to rebel from all the OS X goodness.
Forget this program and stick with Adium. - cyikeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2o geeze, why do they even bother - i mean the 2 main things that have been lacking forever are the "winks" and more obviously the A/V capabilities - if all we needed was text messaging, there is an array of other apps for us to choose from, and most of them do way more than this...
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reno582:
Two wrongs doesn't make a right.
Don't use an argument you don't want the other side to use...
Using your argument, Apple shouldn't improve Quicktime and iTunes until MS improves its Mac ports?
Quicktime is a multimedia architecture, not just a codec and player, QT+iTunes is a more complex program than an instant messenger.
Apple couldn't afford to totally rewrite Quicktime and iTunes for Windows, so they ported part of the Carbon Mac OS APIs to Windows so they could get something more cross-platform. This induced overhead and made the Windows version slower. Rewriting the whole thing in a more native way could result in delays for the Windows versions, and new problems and bugs.
It's in Apple's interest to show that they can write good and efficient software, I'm sure they would make QT+iTunes faster for Windows if they could.
On the other hand, I know that many people are hesitant to switch to the Mac simply because they use MSN A/V chat a lot, and are not aware or interested in third-party solutions.
People could use Parallels Desktop to run Windows software, or BootCamp to play games, but an instant messenger is something you like to run constantly in your main OS. - hotdamn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Why no tabbed chatting?
Why does it look/feel way too big and cluttered?
Why doesn't it look as cool as the Live messenger for Windows?
Come on now, this can't be it. - Torxter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There's like, nothing new. It's almost the same as messenger 5. I don't even think this deserves a new version number. Basically all they did was add the personal message support, universal binary it, and paste universal binary everywhere. I don't think it's worth even closing adium to test it.
- roadmr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Moot since the existence of Adium. I don't understand why users still flock to Microsoft's crap even after they treat the Mac as a second-class citizen. Microsoft doesn't even understand the Mac and they don't adhere to the way things work on a Mac. Well, not that I use MSN at all so whatever!"
- NewPerfection, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know what? There already is a MSN messenger replacement out that is even more capable than Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger. It's called Mercury. Full webcam and video conference support, custom emoticon and wink support, tabbed chat, multiple accounts logged in at once, everything. Everything is completely customizable, from the contact list to the chat window, alerts, and contact cards. Not only that, but it's available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD. And it's free. Check it out: http://mercury.to . I'm surprised that no one here has mentioned it yet.
Microsoft Messenger for Mac is crap in comparison.
Like someone said, Microsoft's reasons for not adding cam support to the Mac version are lame, if some unpaid third-party developers can manage to get webcam working with MSN messenger, why can't Microsoft? - dfunct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Actually the custom little nickname thing is waiting on a patch for GAIM - there have been a few seen in the wild and a while ago someone posted a copy of adium 1.0 (SVN) with the proper GAIM patch for the newer MSN protocols
- dave98, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Going to give this a try... since getting a Mac, I've sunk as low as using Parallels to use Messenger Live.
version 5 of MSN was horrible and Adium didn't work the way I was used to with Live - frukt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IIRC aMSN supports P2P (fast) file transfers, Gaim does not. But aMSN is written in ****** Tcl/Tk* and that sucks monkey balls, at least on windows.
- Elderon4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they have two accounts one corporate and the other is personal. you are trying to log into the corporate one
- Cossins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ok, I still can't log in... It says I'm logging in, and Adium tells me I logged in from another location, but MSN Messenger doesn't really get there (it simply reverts to the "click here to sign in" button).
- Simon - laserdisc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No question I'm sticking with Adium, I have it perfectly setup. It's already superior to Microsoft's own messenger but imagine with audio/video/p2p support. They'll be unstoppable.
- laserdisc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Adium is the best but its awfully slow when you're trying to transfer files. But I just tried a few test files from this version of MSN to folks with the Windows version and it seems to be faster but not as fast as when I transfer the same file using the Windows version of MSN.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3lyso:
You need a block.
*block* - Arju, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'd rather use Adium... if they had video chat then I'd consider jumping aboard.
- borb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Adium is a good program yes. But it is still missing some features that people really enjoy. I mean...along with the Microsoft version...they JUST introduced seeing peoples' custom emoticons. And custom little nicknames is in the mac version but not available through adium. Both apps don't support webcam. Which makes aMsn the superior as far as fully featured apps go. But aMsn is just plain ugly lol. C'mon Microsoft...give us something like Windows Live!!
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Because it's totally irrelevant? Digg is a social bookmarking site with user comments, not an edited publication. If people want to digg up ten different versions of the same story, they're entirely free to do so. I personally use the digg button to flag a story for later interest, or to help a story gain exposure. Different people use it in different ways. Do what works for you, but don't complain about how others use it.
- stray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1...Aaaand Adium was there ages ago. Microsoft releases Messenger for Mac and the whole Mac world goes, "Ho hum."
- cwbypete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sorry, but this just isnt good enough. It's good that there was something resembling a thought going on, and that we've had a basic update, but the lack of elementry things like Audio and Video are shocking. I'll stick with iChat and having no mates to talk to for now :)
You would have though with Apple slowly gaining some market share, Microsoft would attempt to lure some customers back by releasing all singing all dancing apps for Mac, bit like iTunes for Windows I suppose. It did wonders for the sale of Mac mini's. - eatrains, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Reno, please explain how they are crippled.
- OfflinePixel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2'Bout fecking time. Now, give it audio/video.
- jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Fantastic! I've been patiently waiting for this since I made the switch to Mac a few months ago...the non-UB was painfully slow on Rosetta. This is excellent.
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ok Adium is great...
But what if MS finds a way to block it?
We'd be better to keep an official version around in that case... - rrbaker, on 01/15/2009, -2/+1Well, no A/V, but I'm glad at least this is out. One less PPC app listed in the Activity Monitor. Rock.
- Bronstone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1M$ can create OS'es, MP3 players, work suites, Xboxes, etc and can't manage to get video on Mac MSN? Riiiiiiiiiiight.
- sinisterted, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0long live Adium and they update all the time too!! Anyway does Adium have video chat?
- japface, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2i just want the sharing folders *****. i don't care about anything else.
- kingtubby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1As a fresh migrant from Win to Lin, and with all my friends still using Windows, it would be nice if there would be a version of MSN Messenger (or a clone) that you could use to talk AND share files (at decent speed) with... But that would never happen, right?
- kerplunk, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8Finally! This made my day. I have been waiting for this for a long time. Adium is great and all, but if you only use MSN Messenger (Microsoft Messenger)... :)
