- mpacific, on 08/24/2009, -121/+518I think Jason's suggestions are fine and general message about openness is spot on, but the pretentious attitude towards fanboys isn't needed.
- paulmacguyscott, on 08/24/2009, -18/+254I agree with the comment on the Experimental button on the iPhone. We do want more control of our devices and maintain the usability. No company is perfect when it comes to tech support but Apple does a good job with the Genius Bar. We do need an intervention and remind Apple they were supposed to be anti-establishment and not big brother, I even understand Jason's frustration by being attacked by fan boys. I think the point of his rant was mostly lost in the railing against fan boys noise.
- chromerium, on 08/24/2009, -108/+307So, who is Jason Calacanis, and why the ***** should we care what he thinks?
- CUBSWILLWIN, on 08/24/2009, -163/+328I don't think I'm the only one that agrees with this: Jason is the MAN!
- stopsucking, on 08/24/2009, -5/+154GIVE TYLER A FREAKING MICROPHONE. WHAT IS HE SAYING??
- Atacand, on 08/24/2009, -25/+146If you don't like what Apple is doing, don't buy their products and convince others not to as well. Apple would be laughed out of town if they made that 1984 ad today.
- inactive, on 08/24/2009, -27/+143This guy has this idea that there's some correlation between whether or not the iPhone is an open system and whether or not it's good for the consumer, as if that should be their motivation to open it up. The part he seems to be missing is: Apple closes the system and it makes more money for them. What's their motivation to stop, exactly?
His business models supposes that we're all friends and one of us needs to smarten up or we'll stop thinking he's cool. The truth is, Apple doesn't give a ***** about you or what's good for you. So long as we pay for it - and we do - they'll keep things as they are. Same with Microsoft, by the way.
Time to grow up a bit and stop thinking of Apple as a "pal" that gives a damn if you're not happy. They give a damn when you stop paying. - rtaibah, on 08/24/2009, -126/+227This has been said time and time again, and aside from one freakin iPod, I have avoided Apple in the past 5 years. Its great to have someone in the higher echelons of the Tech community denounce Apple and their practices for a change.
Bury me - yocouchdigga, on 08/24/2009, -78/+169I can say without a doubt, Apple fanboys are one of the absolute worst breeds of fanboy. Their blind allegiance is matched only by religious fundamentalists.
- garths, on 08/24/2009, -20/+96He makes a reasonable argument, but spends too much time talking about how he is so sickened, and too little time getting down to the nitty gritty.
One of the major reasons why Apple has been able to do what it does is that they maintain total control over everything they ship. If you buy a Mac it is a combination of Apple hardware and Apple software that you can be confident will run well together. It has always been this way. This is how Apple can be sure that their products meet their standards. Contrast this with Windows systems, where any company can come along and make software or hardware. The result there is a slide to mediocrity.
So sure, openness has some benefits, but you have to understand that Apple is terrified of opening things up too much, and you have to understand that this is a legitimate concern of theirs. So please Jason, consider both sides of the argument and then make a reasoned defence of your position. - ricksite, on 08/24/2009, -41/+115More annoying than fanboys are anti-fanboys.
- urusaiglass, on 08/24/2009, -15/+88Calm down. Its a ***** phone.
- OstrakonX, on 08/24/2009, -18/+88Having a ***** attitude doesn't make someone any less correct.
- inactive, on 08/24/2009, -5/+74funny I was on the "Xbox 360 hardware faliure at 56%" thread not to long ago, talk about drinking form the kool aid.
Here's an observation, how about ALL fanboys are retarded? - bpm2000, on 08/24/2009, -11/+72"enabled and freed by the technology... not constrained"
Exactly. I'm long past done arguing with people about this stuff, but its good to see someone say it... on video. - iDoraemon, on 08/24/2009, -19/+75@5:22

♫ Insights from Tyler!!! ♫
Okay, I LOL'ed. :D - HughesAP, on 08/24/2009, -15/+68Jason is annoying but he is right alot
- MScrip, on 08/24/2009, -13/+64In case you didn't make it to the end... here is his closing statement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d24sPhwSKs#t=5m09s
Apple does make some great products... but there's just a little more Apple could do to make them better... like be a little more open and less restrictive on what YOU can run on YOUR phone. - Yossarian022, on 08/24/2009, -10/+55STEVE JOBS HATES ANDROID PEOPLE!
- redgiemental, on 08/24/2009, -19/+62They also said that Apple make the best products if you were actually listening..
- TaintBrush, on 08/24/2009, -22/+64He has a Bill O'Reilly air about him, but I agree with his intended message.
- chesterjosiah, on 08/25/2009, -9/+50The iPhone is selling because it's an awesome device and runs great apps--not because it is a closed system.
My contention is, if the iPhone was more open, it would sell even more apps. The black box paradigm is driving people away.
Openness will always win in the end. - itsmeee, on 08/24/2009, -9/+47But it destroys what he is trying to do. He is basically saying your wrong and stupid for being wrong when I think most people with an iphone haven't ever thought about what he is talking about. He is right away destroying any chance he had at making people change their views.
- LMN8R, on 08/25/2009, -14/+47Fanboys never deserve any better than a "pretentious" attitude
- vitriolix, on 08/25/2009, -1/+34In case you missed it, they love apple products, they hate the closed nature of the iphone.
- vitriolix, on 08/25/2009, -6/+391) huge difference between "open source platform" and "open platform". an open platform doesn't try to control what applications the user is able to run, any vendor is allowed to make any product for that platform and they don't have to pass through a gatekeeper with a huge conflict of interest to reach the consumers.
2) xbox live arcade lets community member apps get distributed, so it is indeed approaching an open platform:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/community/default. ...
3) "Apple lives in the real world and in the real world closed platforms make money." which is why this was directed at apple fanboys and not apple inc. Its the fanboys who are giving up their control for something shiney and purty. - ineversleep, on 08/24/2009, -43/+73And the "apple fanboy" haters are just as bad. Actively seeking out people who enjoy Apple products to tell them what they should be using. To be honest, I see more of that than the other way around. Wonder which one is more infatuated with their product choice?
- netzdamon, on 08/25/2009, -11/+39Or the fanboys could stop being so sensitive.
- zdiggler, on 08/24/2009, -15/+42I don't listen to TWiT when he's on it, he's too annoying and douche bag.
- redgiemental, on 08/24/2009, -7/+32I don't see how WiiWare is any more open than the iPhone to be honest.
- Fleagleman, on 08/24/2009, -15/+38Jason Calacanis spouting his loudmouth ***** again? Where do I sign up? Maybe he can go on and on about his Tesla car again. Not since Rush Limbaugh have I heard anyone that likes the sound of his own voice so much.
- SecretAsianMann, on 08/25/2009, -4/+27He's one reason I stopped listening to TWiT. I couldn't ***** stand him. The other reason was that TWiT turned into the TWiTter lovefest where Leo Laporte would spend the entire podcast rambling on about Twitter and Kevin Rose. This was about a year ago, maybe it changed? I used to love Leo when he was on TechTV.
Leo: TWIIIIIITTER TWITTER TWITTER TWITTER TWITTER KEVIN ROSE>:( TWITTER!!!
John C. Dvorak: *grumble*
Jason Calacanis: AAAAAAAAAFDLSKHFSAQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! + more high-pitched squealing
Leo: TWITTER! AUDIBLE! TWIIIIIIIIITTERRRRRRRRRR!!! - zdiggler, on 08/24/2009, -15/+36He's a dumbass that come over and ruin TWiT.
- Senturion, on 08/24/2009, -4/+25Jason Calacanis calling other people sellouts.
Pot...kettle...black. - Lightstab, on 08/24/2009, -40/+60There is nothing right about anything Calacanis said. Windows Mobile has been open to apps for years and where has it gotten that platform? Apple just sold more phones last quarters than all WinMo devices combined. Where has openness gotten Linux? 1 percent market share.
And before some idiot says it, Windows is not a open platform. Yeah, it runs on all kinds of hardware, but the source code is closed. It's the same for Google. Ask Google to release their search algorithms and see how far you get.
How does this idiot feel about game consoles? They all, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, have a closed platform. You can't design a game and just sell it for a console without going through a committee. You can't put a home brew app on an Xbox 360. So Calacanis needs to sit in a corner and shut up. Let him design something better if he doesn't like Apple.
Apple lives in the real world and in the real world closed platforms make money. - jparkinson, on 08/24/2009, -3/+23He makes some good points, but man... could he be more of a douchebag?
I agree that the iphone could be much better if it were totally open (and I own and love an iphone) but i'm not about to go around flaming people for disagreeing with me, and calling them sell outs and saying that it sickens me.
This video is just full of fail because of how he presented himself in it. If he made the same points but took out all of his pretentiousness this video would be a solid argument for his side. - inactive, on 08/24/2009, -19/+37Exactly.
What do Me, Jason Calacanis, and Mark Cuban all have in common? We all have opinions that don't matter and no one gives a ***** about. - LowHz, on 08/25/2009, -8/+26Ha! A douchbag twitter user is sitting there calling me a schmuck. Oh the irony.
- SpoonDigg, on 08/24/2009, -9/+26I think I saw his opinion about apple on *****.com
- SlothVision, on 08/24/2009, -3/+20Sorry buddy but most people aren't fighting a cause when they buy a phone, they just want something practical that suits their needs. In this case the iphone fills that for many people.
- fubar109, on 08/24/2009, -5/+22Haha, that is the sole reason why I canceled my subscription to TWiT in iTunes.
- jbella, on 08/25/2009, -6/+22Lets not lose perspective. 99.9% of people do not give two turds about the stuff Jason is talking about.
I include myself in that. I say.. let apple be apple. Why does every company have to go about things in the same "open" way? If the way apple does things is not to your liking, then buy a different phone. Whats all the drama about? - wackattack, on 08/25/2009, -15/+30Higher echelons of the tech community? This moron? Who the hell is that? What did this guy ever do? Not meant sarcastic because ive never heard of this guy.
Could be mistaking but to me he sounds like the perez hilton of the tech industry. - ChunkerMunker, on 08/24/2009, -6/+20Can't the same be said about ANY fanboys regardless of what it is?
They're fanboys for a reason, they believe whatever it is they're fanboys of, is infallible.
Btw...not everybody is a tech genius and not everybody wants to hack or jailbreak anything. As far as open source, Apple supports .html5, free wifi and other technology advancements.
It it as opened as it could be? NO
But its not as if they're obstructing the entire world from developing, they just want to control 'their' products for various reasons. And they've been successful so far, haven't they? - andy78, on 08/24/2009, -8/+21I hate to bust balls, but does anyone remember what phones where like before the iPhone...And I dont mind closed systems as much as i mind whiny little bitches.
And if you want to go on your own, unlock your iphone... - korea, on 08/25/2009, -2/+15... so?
- mbst2000, on 08/25/2009, -5/+17Christ this guy sounds like an *****. A particularly high pitched, pompous, irritating *****.
Tech community? Do ***** off. It's a consumer space and this guy sounds like he's so angry that ordinary folk use technology to do what they want it to do, not because they think they're making a statement.
He sounds like a PC gamer snorting in derision at someone owning a console.
This guy: "Huh, you use a controller to play a game? I feel sorry for you, I have Macros on my keyboard and have upgraded my Graphics card to play a community modded game, what do you think about that?"
Other guy: "Sorry, what was that? I was too busy enjoying myself with something that is totally inconsequential...boy you do get worked up about nothing"
Can someone please explain to me the benefit of having "control" over my iPhone? I bought it, knew what I was getting into, think it's great and it does pretty much everything I want it to do. I wasn't aware I was making a ***** statement when I bought it, I just thought I was buying a phone I liked.
To listen to this guy you'd think that Apple had no impact on innovation at all. Has the entire mobile phone market in the past two years past him by or something?
Every time you think you're just that little bit too nerdy, some prick like this comes along, and just let's you know you're not too bad after all.
I mean insulting people because they buy a phone, a phone for Christ's sake! - Kinneas12, on 08/24/2009, -12/+24It's not hard to be right when it's such an obvious fact. Am I the only one who thinks this is a "no *****" thought?
Of course lots of people have yet to be notified, so it's worth a front page slot. - Zap2, on 08/24/2009, -17/+28A bunch a generalizations(reformat you HDD for any issues...no..).....I like Apple. But I'm not sure if I'm a fanboy. I run OS X and iPhone OS(although I do have a Nokia e63 and had a netbook for a while)....I like Apple, but that doesn't mean I can't say they need to fix some stuff. I'd LOVE to be able to install apps on my own....but that said, the iPhone OS is good enough for me to deal without for now
- vitriolix, on 08/25/2009, -13/+24I'm pretty sure the most annoying are the anti-anti-fanboys
