- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -18/+40The funny thing is that they try copy iPod, but end up with a superior product!
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -20/+35It's funny how sites like Engadget and Gizmodo made all types of excuses when it came to the similarities of the Apple phone to the LG model that was out weeks before Apple's. It was all just a matter of how the design was just to universal for Apple not to use. To them there was no evidence for copying. None at all...
But in this case, It's time to call out the lawyers according to Engadget? For what? A design that yesterday was just so obvious now becomes Apple's to sue over?
Nice try Engadget. Looks like you guys are getting a little scared of this device.
No one was going to roll over for Apple in the cell phone market. - stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17The fact that it's 2:33AM in every picture worries me about how close the full phone is...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17The iPod will be better by far? Based on what...other than your extreme desire to suck Steve Jobs' *****, I mean?
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"iPod does one thing and does it well. People who are interested in usability over random features you never use (read: most people) usually choose iPod simply because it offers a solid overall experience."
Keep dreaming. The average person chooses the iPod because they don't know about anything else. They go into Best Buy, see the huge iPod section (which they've seen ads for everywhere), then see the smaller section filled with Mp3 players (most of them don't even recognize the term Mp3 player or DAP, all they know is iPod) and think that all those products are cheap, no-name iPod imitators (that is if they even know that an iPod and an Mp3 player are the same thing).
Face it, the iPod is the Windows of Mp3 players. People by the iPod because they don't even know the term Mp3 player, let alone any of their other options. The same way people buy Windows because they don't even know the term OS, let alone know of any altenative OS's. - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22@digga
so how does it having vastly more features not make it superior? - Leviathan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20more features != always better.
Personally usability is higher on my list than a bunch of features I don't really need such as a crappy ass camera on my phone. - jerryparid, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Apple seems to believe that they own the right to every "very-slick-PDA-looking-touch-screen-mp3" phone out there.

- jonahan52, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@shrimpdesign ... So your telling me that Apple couldn't copy LG/Prada in 3 months but Meizu can copy Apple in 1 month. Interesting. I'm a Mac guy and all but this makes no sense.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8more like, blogs and diggers seem to think apple owns those rights - who knows what they own though, freaking 200 patents in iPhone, - that button layout might be in there - but whatever.
- Zique, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Don't you mean litigation from LG?
- wafflesomd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Meizu makes some nice products, such as they;re mp3 players.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@bendig
do you have a cell phone? have you ever dealt with the hell of hardware and service providers? anything Apple or Microsoft could ever even think of doing is happy fun compared to what the US cell phone providers pull off. Verizon phones have to be hacked just to get data off and on them without using a pay service. they have to be hacked to add your own ringtones. unless they thought the financial return of an iPhone would be massive, i can't imagine the alleged talks with Verizon lasted more than 20 minutes.
since computers come with optical drives and USB ports, they are well ahead of most cell phones. - aspirinetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so?
that's a pretty lame statement whatever you meant, let me tell you.. - BionicAntboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL! Meizu knocks off the iPhone, which owes a hellalot to the LG Prada, which owes a lot to... er uhm... Palm?
Ah Palm, if only you released a HiRes+ keyboardless phone 2 years ago, I might still be a customer
(my attempts to cram a cellphone into my Palm TX failed miserably)
Back on topic...
Sure Meizu is copying the iPhone, but if it's running an OS that allows 3rd part devs in on the game, such as WM5 or 6, I'll check it out, because for video, nothing rox harder than being able to just COPY your divx files onto your phone and play them without conversion. - iamichi, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Exactly what I thought. All the fanboys where going on that its a touch-screen phone and no wonder they look the same, blah, blah, blah and that Apple didn't copy LG. I think when you have minimal design and a phone which is basically just one big screen they're going to look the same...
- foxymcfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@pcgeek101: I felt inclined to digg you, since that is my YTMND. I know I've made it when a crappy YTMND I've made is linked in the comments of Digg.
....Damn I need a social life. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4WMP 11+Subscriptons > iTunes+iTMS
WMP 11+Subscriptons/Urge(etc) = Play on a huge variety of players
iTunes+iTMS = Locked into limited selection of overpriced, underfeatured Apple players
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The problem with Apple (or any company for that matter) using a minimalist design strategy is it's almost impossible to successfully sue someone for a copyright violation. I have a feeling you could copy almost any piece of furniture Ikea sells. There generally has to be some sort of creative replication. The idea of a thin, rounded, rectangular phone with one giant touchscreen is great . . . but you can't copyright an idea.
- Nickbc87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I have the Meizu Miniplayer, and it kicks the iPod nano's ass in terms of of features, by that I mean features that actually work well. I'll be getting this when it comes out, for sho'!
- xiphoeides, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems to me this phone probably only works in China. Since iPhone won't hit Asian market until 2008 I don't see much points to worry about.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7leviathan...and you've trested both phoens to know that the iPhone is better in terms of usability?
flag...you are right. It IS a stupid accusation.
Just as Engadget's accusation that the Meizu stole Apple's design. - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5If it doesn't scroll like ze iPhone, I ain't buyin' it.
Oooooooooooooh, ahhhhhh. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6But the features aren't want counts to most poeple. To your average Joe consumer (which there are more of than geeks) the fact that it just works and has an easy all round experience for getting music etc. onto the device is what counts. Hence, iPod+iTunes+iTS wins everytime (or at least by the current numbers).
More features != better. End of story. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Becase iPod advertise on TV and they plug their products TV shows. that's how to sells in America. Most American consumers are dumb. A lot of other players out there are as just as easy as ITMS+iPee. But you rarely ever see them on TV because they don't have power to do product placements.
Apple is master of product placement. Even in old movies you will find a Mac in there and how do you think its got there? - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@geoken
that's not true... there are some 3rd party players that will sync with iTunes. they won't play iTMS DRM'd songs, but it will sync with iTunes. that's worked since iTunes started shipping (long before the iPod was released). - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having the same or similar features doesn't bother me. Even having a similar interface where you go from function to function via small touch screen buttons is no big deal as it's simply a good design for interfacing with a device like the Prada or what's known so far about the iPhone. Like the stupid Apple vs MS look and feel lawsuit from years ago, there's only so many ways to access information effectively.
Meizu however went beyond that with its device. To blatantly copy the iPhone stinks of looking for publicity (Apple did the same when they named their device the iPhone without securing the right to do so, making sure that everyone was talking about it without Apple having to spend a dime in advertising). They could have had a similar interface without taking the road they did. They even used practically the same icons. You don't have to be an Apple fanboy to see what this is.
Meizu's phone may be great. I won't buy one unless they make a few changes. It can't be that hard to make some icon changes. - bendig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If Apple has set the bar higher for cellphone manufacturers worldwide, then surely that has to be great news for consumers. Competition is always good news for consumers and frankly Apple has been getting away with its monopolistic approach for far too long.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nothing syncs with iTunes (except for their own players). Luckily there are superior apps (WMP 11, Amarok, etc) that can sync with pretty much anything.
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is without a doubt a mock-up, not a prototype. For a start the time is always 2:33 in every picture, secondly there is only one screen option shown. This is vaporware.
- SanHolo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well, only because some Bloggers (and be it engadget) seem to believe that, it does not mean that Apple seems to believe that.
Apple vs. Microsoft-fanboyism here on digg is becoming more and more ridiculous. I don't think that Apple should have the sole right to produce one-big-screen-phones, the iPhone shouldn't even be mentioned as often as it gets today whenever there is talk about a touchscreen-phone. But hell, everyone has to admit that the Meizu _really_ looks like the iPhone. I don't say that that's a good or a bad thing, but it looks alike, that's a fact you can't deny unless you're blind. - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9Agreed. I love my Nokia N73, and it can do everything the iPhone can and more, but if I had to choose between the N73 (which is still tons more stable than Win Mobile) and a less-featured phone with a much more user-friendly, robust OS, I would choose the latter.
That said, there's still no god damn way I'm paying 600 bucks and a 2 year contract for any phone. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Superficially it's a bit of a rip-off, sure, but really if Apple take these people to court over a Windows Mobile smartphone I think they may as well point a .50 Desert Eagle at their foot and pull the trigger. They didn't succeed in litigating against the company that copied the original iPod Shuffle so I doubt they'd win here. There are marked differences in the design and the OS that set it apart from the iPhone. You never know it's probably a better phone to boot!
- pyro1149, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would buy this thing just cause it looks like it can support video calls. Sorry Apple, I love you and all but this iphone isn't as revolutionary as it is being made out to be. I do realize the great design efforts that were put into making the interface on the iPhone and that in itself is revolutionary, but it suffers from the fact that it is being made for one of the most antiquated cell phone markets in the world, which is almost now reaching the 3G stage. If I didn't live abroad, I would have been blown away by the iphone but that isn't the case and sadly it will not be the case with the other billions of cell phone subscribers that live abroad as well.
- m00dy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why did I think this was a car?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3That is only a few months after the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i like anything that makes apple get its panties in a bunch
- fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it works on GSM networks and im guessing on 3g networks. Also meizu runs windows CE 6. Im not sure if those a mock ups because if they are then its definitely a rush job to make money from the like iphone but better angles(they have done it b4). If its not a mock up then this means meizu has been planning this kind of phone for a while and maybe only added styling cues late in the game. The problem is the general idea of rectangle screen on rectangle phone for a touchscreen based phone is the most logical. Touch screen should be in interesting trial since its not exactly the easiest thing to take care of.
- s140225, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok, look at that phone... ok, now look at the iPhone... now double take... and stop... what was that? they look the same? THATS BECUASE MEIZU TOOK THE DAMN DESIGN FROM APPLE!!! Apple is reliable, trustworthy, and *not windows* so why would they steal a design from some barely known company! And for all of the people who are like "ehh its so expensive!! I cant afford it and no way would i buy it!!" Either A) stop complaining and get a job, or B) get a different phone and stop obsessing. Ok people? wake up! Its not all about you! were here to talk about the phone not your personal financial situations. So what if its 600 or 500 dollars? It comes with 600 or 500 dollars worth of stuff! So people, cut the negativity, or at least do it in a way that doesnt degrade the iPhone
- skratchnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this even going to come out in the US? i don't care anyway...i want Safari in my pocket. i don't like windows mobile or any of that pocket PC crap. i like seeing the Cocoa aluminum on my screen. it's comforting. i will do what i want and you will do the same.....
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3These pictures are fake. It's not a real product and never will be. Someone is taking all of you for a ride and you should be ashamed of yourselves for going along.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1iPhone for me.
- TheMacThinker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe these guys are part the Apple Chinese manufacturers and they stole the design, modified it a bit and are trying to compete. Or maybe this is just pure speculation on a virtual product. What proves that the pictures are real?

http://www.mostofmymac.com - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2OK dude, YOU DON'T BUY ANYTHING THAT MADE IN CHINA! IF YOU GOT ANYTHING THAT MADE IN CHINA I ASK THAT YOU BURN THEM.
Thanks. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@ joe90210
other music players have more features than the iPod, but still suck. just adding "features" is meaningless if the product overall sucks. since it doesn't exist, nobody can tell. it will never exist outside China, so who cares?
you can't tell me it's not an iPhone rip-off when they even lifted the icons from Apple. it has nothing to do with it being a rectangle, or a touch screen..... they completely lifted the look of the UI. the real power of the iPhone is going to be the software. if it's everything it's promoted to be, that is what will make it killer.
again, we'll never see it in the US or Europe, so who cares. - aspirinetu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*their*
- jgood2709, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2i'll bet this guy doesn't even sync with itunes and address book. what's the point?
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Back in my day phones were phones and address books were address books. Nowadays everything gets crammed into one gadget that sucks at everything, plus it always runs out of power. Thanks, progress, for making life suckier and more expensive.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It will probably have some really crappy sync software that SORT OF works with Windows. God forbid that it should use Windows Mobile, cos then it'll have that suck-ass ActiveSync to deal with. ActiveSync is one big steaming pile of crap. I hate the way it says that any file you load onto a WM device (from Windows) is being "converted" and takes an age of man to transfer, even over USB 2.0
