- Cannon13, on 10/12/2007, -7/+80Why don't you just stay away from stories with 'Mac' in the title, instead of complaining about how all the cool mac apps don't work on your crappy OS.
- digginghacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39looks like safari's falling a little behind
time for apple to wow us next month, thumbnails of tabs at the very least - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34@jdb252
It's because he asked nicely. - Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38Quickly, somone copy it for Linux!
No, I'm serious. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23The reason why it's so good is that the rendering engine it uses is WebKit. Which is not a part of Windows. Webkit is opensource, and khtml based, so it may be possible to port it to Windows.
But it hasn't been done yet, and don't hold your breath. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25>Yay! A new Mac browser that's even LESS compatible with
>online apps! What will they think of next!?
i don't know where this stuff about not being compatible comes from. every browser does something wrong and i understand on paper there might be something more... but i use shiira as my first sting browser and safari with the nightly webkit updates second... and i don't see it. i can't remember something not working. i am a high end user and go a lot of places and i know how these things work technically. i wouldn't miss it. if it happened i know what it was and what caused it. if it doesn't to me then i just gotta question what others are doing wrong. weird. something. - myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Welcome to Mac Land, where Firefox does not run as well as the other browsers.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21FF is 2nd rate on Mac. Not because it sucks, but because there are better options, as opposed to on windows...
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20you can dl Shiira 1.x, not 2.0...
- jdb252, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30Haha someone says the exact same thing for Windows and gets modded down - This guy gets modded up because of everyone's LinuxLove.
- nstanosheck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Shiira already is way ahead of Safari. Nice to see that the people involved keep on innovating!
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13you should be coding for rending engines, not browsers.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12thumbnails of tabs?
macupdate.com/safaristand - Tlogmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Er ... Of course it does. CSS2 has been around a long time. Are you talking about CSS3?
- Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It uses safari's same webkit engine, look into things before you start commenting. I've been using Shiira for a while now, and its really amazing. The best features are browsing through tabs with the comma and period buttons, and a private browsing feature that you don't have to turn on every time. The side bar is nice for quick RSS info, and the whole app is more mac-friendly than any ff build including camino.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12project link:
http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en - StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is why it's prerelease.
- t3hdarkone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Shiira uses the system's Webkit framework, which is also used by Safari. So, it is not another rendering engine and so it should not cause problems to developers.
- FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://www.duggmirror.com/apple/Meet_the_next-generation_browser_for_the_Mac_Shiira_2.0/
The site is down so there's duggmirror.. - warble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't care how many browsers there are, as long as they all actually work with the W3C standards.. Safari is getting close, FF is pretty close too, IE blows goats as usual. Can't they just all just RTFM?
- Xcoded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Duggmirror:
http://www.duggmirror.com/apple/Meet_the_next-generation_browser_for_the_Mac_Shiira_2.0/ - Classicgamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Well it is open source. I'm to lazy to check the license, but the source is there.
- chrislund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i meant *full* support, sorry.
i found this nifty reference that shows what elements of css are supported by various browsers:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_layout_engines_%28CSS%29 - felium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Come on man, it's a technology preview. did you even read the article?
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Firefox for Mac sucks (not a proper aqua interface, slow), camino is much better but I may just give this a try, nice UI, cool features (The tab dock was something I've always thought should be in a broswer, finally someone besides me thought of it.)
Does it use Safaris rendering engine? What about pop-up blocking? - the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i'd have palettes over toolbars anyday. Look how much more efficient Microsoft Office on OS X is compared to the multiple lines of toolbars used on windows office.
It may take a little getting used to, but it is a lot better for many things (and works better on widescreens and higher resolution displays).
I couldn't even imagine using photoshop without palettes for example - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just tried it today and I gotta say I am very pleased!! It loads up much faster than Safari and I swear it seems to be better integrated too!!
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I hate anything that "floats". They always seem to get in the way, no matter where you place them.
- po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Instead of the traditional Safari style tab users are used to, Shiira 2.0 opts for one visually similar to Firefox"
Shiira is taking style tips from Firefox.
God help us. - Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Here's the pink to the Download:
http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en - ProtocolJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8i just installed it, it took a whole minute for it to be my favorite browser for my mac. It's Fast, tons of features and best of all expose tabs...works like a charm and it is a great feature. This browser is made in Japan or by japenese people and in shows...hi quality browser, (I ran it thru some speed test and its blowing away all other browsers that i have Safari,Opera,Camino) ....Bos at Apple should take some notes on this one
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6some browsers display this thing called the world wide web. try it out sometime.
- zxspectrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it's so fast....can someone please post a link for the beta????
- tychop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What's firefox got over Safari?
I use Safari for it's RSS functionality. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can use the usercontents.css and works like a charm, but it is not built-in. Maybe in the future.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Do hold your breath.. This way you will keep quiet!
- BobWoodshed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Popup blocking is there (same style as Safari) and yes, it uses Safari's WebKit rendering engine. I've been using Shiira in one form or another since I first got my iBook about a year and a half ago and I love it. The newest 1.2.2 release is great. While the 2.0 series is not available for download, those who want to live on the bleeding edge can download nightly builds here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.jp/shiira/
I've been running nightlies as my primary browser for the better part of two months now with only minimal crashing. Enjoy! - felium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3why is that now?
- kriegs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7speaking as a web designer/developer: NO MORE BROWSERS. it's already a nightmare to make sure sites work in the ones that exsist
- aizdoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5-deleted-
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2worked for me, some of it was a bit slow... could have been the massive download in the background (spring forth my burly Xcode IDE and examine ye this source code)
- cmiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although I still use Camino over Shiira, I use Shiira if I need a webkit based browser (instead of Safari). It's not a bad browser and I had trouble deciding to use it or Camino, I can't wait to check out v2!
- tychop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you name me a couple of Sites that Safari renders wrong & FF renders correctly? I never had that b4.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By the power of Greyscale!
- commongiga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using camino for the last few months and really like it. Can anyone offer insight on how this browser is better than Camino? I can't try it out unitl I get home from work.
- cklol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WOW the Shiira forums are getting the f**k spammed out of them:
http://hmdt-web.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=34 - ProtocolJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it does take more Memory than safari though.... about 10 megs more. I'll take the hit for the brwsing speed jumps...they need to touch up the sidebar though...still a kick ass browser...
