- noeljohnhoward, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27how about a mobile iphone version of adium! that would be so so awesome
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Interesting, although I don't know much I'll use this. Probably just in an emergency when I NEED to get on IM. The fact that my IM conversations will just be in some random Safari window makes it kinda impractical.
I don't know what the "real" fix to this is. Honestly most of the people that I would REALLY want to talk to over IM, I have their phone numbers so I can text or call them too. I can see the business decision to not integrate IM directly into the iPhone, but for me personally it's not that much of an issue. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10"The fact that my [insert an iPhone app here] will just be in some random Safari window makes it kinda impractical."
Welcome to the "Modern way to building stuff on the iPhone." -Steve Jobs. - cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10no Audio notification
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Can anyone confirm if you can leave Safari and continue to have Meebo running in the background? Will it give you an audio notification when a new message comes in?
- Quix, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Agreed, I can see how AT&T wouldn't want the EDGE network loaded down with revenue-free chat messages, but there's no reason the iPhone shouldn't have an iChat client that works over wi-fi. If I'm sitting at home on my sofa and want to send a quick text message to someone, why should I have to use up some of my SMS quota? Lame. This needs to be fixed, Apple.
- PerennialTears, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7yeah same here. Been spinning for 2 minutes now
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Did you seriously just quote Vanilla Ice?
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Can't log on from my iPhone..I can access the meebo site (wwwl ? wtf? ) but when I try to login, it just spins endlessly. Thought it was my crappy EDGE connection, but other sites load fine.
- richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The iphone platform is so so closed, though.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Now how would they be able to trickle out the features every few months with a new $600 version of the phone if they allowed people to just write applications for it?
- 8bit_Hero, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9yo I don't know

- chugger1992, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5All they need is a freakin' send button, and it would be compatible with nearly ALL web browsing devices. A while ago, I submitted a feature request via the Meebo forums for a send message button, to allow the compatibility with the Wii. I got a (rather rude) reply that this feature was purposely taken off and Meebo didn't support the Wii. Well, duh it doesn't support the Wii, I WAS REQUESTING THAT! Well, along prances the iPhone, which too needs a send message button. Oh, now lets give that button to the iPhone ONLY! :)
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I appreciate your interest in my bulge, but dude, this isn't the place :p
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4wwwl is the server
it is different depending
like www5.meebo.com
meebo has multiple servers to avoid blocks - johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4how long has the PSP been out? oh yeah.... more than 5 days.
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The audio notifications use Flash, which the iPhone doesn't support. Also, you won't be able to see meebo's favicon and title notifications when in other Safari pages, because you can't see the favicons and titles of other pages, unlike most tabbed browsing interfaces.
- cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6it works pretty good. would be nice if they would modify the interface to look more iPhonish, but it would be nicer if it becomes obsolete by an update from cupertino with iChat for the iPhone.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Not true, this only happens when you're actively transferring data - messages are being sent not when the data connection is open and idle - which would be most of the time. Nice try, you lose.
- gwalbridge, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sorry, I don't know how to "burry" something, let alone "*****."
- Soulhuntre, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Of course while you are in IM (if your on EDGE) all your phone calls are going right to voice mail.
- kiddailey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Revenue-free? I'm *paying* for that internet access!
- Chakat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Especially considering that nearly every other smartphone on the planet has an IM program already. Hell, I've got an IRC client on my Razr, I think apple can put an IM client on the iPhone.
- djnick, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4lol at ppl going crazy over a 3rd party site that went out of its way to make it work for the iphone when the product should have already had this feature working out of the box!
- mpeters13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is great news. Great except for the fact that if you aren't browsing on wifi, i imagine rendering meebo would be horrible over EDGE. Not to mention the horrid instability of the Safari browser right now. Of course, i'm sure that will get better over time. Either way, huge thanks to the folks over at meebo. :D
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Every other smartphone out there can use IM (with addon software) but the iPhone's lack of 3rd party software support means that AT&T can tell them not to put in an IM client and it will actually make some difference. I'd really like it if they released an IM client AND it worked on EDGE. What they're selling with the iPhone is not "the real internet," it's "The real Web and Email." Come on, Apple!
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The thing is, I was really hoping that Apple would be the company to really break the mold and try to use their clout to try to overcome the requests of the carriers. I guess that didn't happen.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2.....
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They have different servers to loadbalance, they have different subdomain to avoid blocks.
Dosnt work though. just have to block http://*.meebo.com which sucks.. - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Apple has said that they will provide free software updates to the iPhone, so most likely they won't require upgrades for purely software-related features.
- sneakerelph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Also, the iPhone groups SMS messages like an IM chat, as far as i know.
- shawnz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2does anyone have a screenshot of it extending the iphone keyboard like that? or possibly a code snippet?
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2iMeebo?
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2iChat would probably only support AIM and XMPP. AIM is, for the most part, only used in the US, while XMPP is pretty much only used by technical people. You can use transports to get access to MSN and Yahoo through XMPP, but that requires technical knowledge, and unlike Gizmo I'm not expecting that iChat for the iPhone (if it will exist at all) will come with an easy way to sign up for transports to other services. On a Mac, I can install whatever IM software I like... because of the iPhone's closed platform, if it doesn't include support for major protocols, the IM feature will be useless for a lot of people.
- morouxshi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not only that but they would make you choose between the two, instead of having one unified contact list. Its the only thing i really dislike about iChat on my mac.
- Carbamide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I would like something like this that worked on Palm OS.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think they meant the iPhone should have iChat on it out of the box. i am curious why there is no iChat on the iPhone. i assume it's a business roadblock from aT&T, or they are tweaking something that may somehow be tied to the version of iChat for 10.5. total guesses though.
- naio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As you wish!!!1
- FourDoor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I agree that this solution will only be used for extreme situations when I really need to log on to IM for whatever reason. But hey, it definitely worked for my iPhone. I logged on their website and was able to chat with Yahoo IM and then got disconnected after no IMs were sent/received within a minute of inactivity.
- majsan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Interesting posts about iPhone and meebo. I use m.heysan.com, it has been working since I bought my iPhone, on launchday!
- ekday, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0hmmm....I really thought I was the one that posted this first, but I guess macrumors got me http://www.ekday.com/blog/files/iphone_chat.html
- rockclimber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0but does it allow you to login in to multiple accounts simultaneously? most people i know use multiple accounts...
- mrchin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1not a product out of the box thing. It's the sites lack of an implementation of all browser compatible submit key commands.
And all iChat and AIM apps do have a send button. Not on Meebo though. So that's the iPHone's fault? - SPECOPS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You don't have to be a dick about it, especially when you are the one who is wrong. Active edge connections, will result in calls going to VM, no matter if it's a SMS, or any other sort of data over edge.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2thats why web based is the only way to go
and thats why Meebo could probably have an advantage - kaffein, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I figured this would work...
- rockclimber, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3sure, you can use SMS instead of IM, but meebo also saves chat history. and i like the fact that i can see a conversation as it transpired rather than looking in my text inbox and seeing just the SMS messages that i received. the way i see it, SMS was a temporary solution until phones got good enough to do real instant messaging.
iChat? great... if you and all of your friends are on AIM. meebo also lets you log in to yahoo, google, etc. - Solistca, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Ok, that's kinda badass.
- agentarsenic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I use meebo instead of the messaging programs it emulates. It's simple, in browser, and doesn't have a crapload of ads like AIM. The meebo team are also very down to earth cool people!
