- Quix, on 10/10/2007, -15/+268Dvorak + Mac? W...T...F?????
"I have no plans to move to the Mac platform for my personal use. That said, I have noticed that I've been recommending the machine to friends and neighbors when they want to know what kind of system they should buy."
Translation: "I'd have to eat way too much crow if I bought myself a Mac at home, plus I'd lose 90% of my readership (hey, Apple haters pay my mortgage), but I'm sure going to tell everyone I know and love to buy one!"
Stubborn old coot. - cbear9494, on 10/10/2007, -6/+229Why isn't this on dvorak.org/blog?......did I say dvorak.org/blog
- Pliep, on 10/10/2007, -27/+228So he admits he has been slamming the Mac for ages without ever using one? What a *****.
- Duncan3, on 10/10/2007, -8/+178This is going to be devastating to Mac sales, because Dvorak is ALWAYS WRONG about everything.
- griz, on 10/10/2007, -14/+161"The processes for some things, such as burning CDs, seem convoluted to me."
WHAT!? What's so convoluted about these 3 steps...
1. Make new "Burn Folder"
2. Drag files into said folder (They can be from anywhere, even a network drive)
3. Click Burn Disc
Oh, almost forgot, there is a step 4. And here is where it gets confusing.
4. Insert a blank disk
Oh crap,
step 5...How the hell do I close the CD drawer??? Damn this is convoluted. - ScrumFritter, on 10/10/2007, -13/+138I think it says a lot about his integrity that he's willing to admit when he's wrong. Other than that, I still see him as a bit of an ass.
- jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+90"Anyway, the way I see it is that the differences between the Mac and the PC that really matter are minor. The big exception is the usability factor. And, in the end, that's probably what the majority of users care about."
Duh. - tbenathan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+88For those that don't know, John C. Dvorak was the most prestigious Mac columnist in the late 80s and early 90s. He wrote for MacUser magazine; when he left, it was something of a coup for Microsoft. After being a staunch Mac advocate, Dvorak became one of Apple's biggest critics.
He remained that way until today. - avalys, on 10/10/2007, -2/+88It's even simpler than that. You don't have to mess with burn folders.
1. Insert Blank CD.
2. Drag files onto CD.
3. Eject CD. - jesuscampos, on 10/10/2007, -4/+73Is the sky falling?
Good catch 'Cfinazzo'
I just noticed I'm been doing the same, especially ever since bootcamp and parallels. I once build system for friends and family, but that ended into a life of servitude. I then promoted DELL, and advice them to get technical service plan. But I just couldn't get it through some of my friends/family to stop clicking on spam. But just last year I started promoting the mac. Ever since then, life has been peaceful. Except for that 2 year and a 5 year in my house ;) - winnch, on 10/10/2007, -26/+86Unfortunately, Mac or no Mac, he's still an absolute moron.
- madmage, on 10/10/2007, -4/+63It's from the TWiT netcast. Every episode Dvorak is on, he plugs his blog, "dvorak.org/blog" So it's sort of a running gag to bring it up all the time.
- slehmann, on 10/10/2007, -6/+44"Well, the truth is XP is just as stable as any Apple OS." - Bwahahahahahahahaha! I work in an environment with PCs and Macs side by side, and I'm sorry, Windows XP is about as stable as a one-legged dog on a boat....no matter how you tweak the installlation.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39I built a friend of mine, shes a complete and total MORON pc speaking, a hackintosh in hopes she would like it and buy a mac. Its now been two months and she has not turned on her windows pc again, loving her hackintosh. She is currently saving for her own iMac, and plans on purchasing as soon as she has the money.
I have gotten one call from her, asking if she should do an update, NOTHING ELSE.
This is the same girl that asks how to copy and paste...... not ONE call. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -24/+58Or maybe he just likes better computers...
- domomike, on 10/10/2007, -4/+36I used to spend HOURS. So many freaking hours working on my PC's. Once you get a Mac, all that goes away. No more spyware, no more viruses, no more glitchy wireless network connections, no more countless driver problems, no more super buggy "This Program is not Responding," no more having to use the device manager, no more defragmenting... I could go on and on.
Frankly, I don't care if one choses to buy a PC, or choses to bash Macs all the time. I'm not going to waste my energy on working on PCs anymore, even if that means the PC isn't mine. - moofer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+34So, what he's saying in the first two paragrahs of his "ariticle" is, he used to rail on Macs, but had no idea how they worked...
"Hey, I figured since I'm known for ragging on the Mac all the time, I may as well speak from some experience, right?"
So, according to this, he wasn't speaking from experience before. Wow. It's amazing that this guy's name is even known. - EvilJelloMan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30Are you on crack? Genius? The man is a tool. Most of his articles contain more factual errors and outright false statements than a White House press conference. Dvorak is a skilled internet troll with just enough computer knowledge to make himself look like a clueless douche.
- NSResponder, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30Integrity, my ass. The man makes ***** up to get page hits. Remember that BS a couple months ago about iPhone battery life?
-jcr - TheHayze, on 10/10/2007, -5/+30Well this is coming from another lont time PC user, switching over to the OS X platform, I have to say I like OS X a lot more then I like XP Pro. Sure, it's XP Pro, and it can run anything I want it to. But deep down, you know he's right; spyware, viruses, and the other trouble of keeping it clean, and functional, starts to get to you over time. I know it bugs me endlessly when I want to install a driver for something, and Windows barks back at me about something annoying like it cant find it. Indeed, endless hours of fumbling my way through XP Pros' endless arrays of text boxes, and alerts starts to really frustrate you. Even as something whose used windows since the days of 3.1. I'm not even going to talk about Windows' touchy permissions nightmares; it's just not something that one really talks about anyway.
At this point, all I ever use windows for now is gaming, and multimedia support for on my desk. Well, that and i'm too cheap to buy a nice MacBook Pro. Ever since I starting working at my current job, they have me an somewhat old MacBook Pro to use, and I have to say: I like it. It already has some features I had to install on my XP box at home, like a functional dock. Indeed, OS X' dock has some things missing from my stardock object dock, but it's damn close.
In the end, will I switch for good? No, but yes at the same time. Until poeple start making good games for OS X, i'll keep with my windows box. - kingyubba, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24anyone notice the large flock of pigs flying outside?
- Hdlsa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Isn't the mighty mouse standard now, which has two main buttons, one side button, and a scroll wheel that scrolls in all directions and clicks.
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24So you're saying his opinion can be easily bought by the highest bidder? Well that explains a lot ;)
- tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28I dugg you down as inaccurate, modern macs don't have CD drawers so you're intentionally making it far more complicated than necessary. Damn mac haters!! :p
(I'm joking) - LaughingMan11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Way back in the day, Dvorak used to write the back page of MacUser, so this isn't the first time he's used a Mac.
I do find it hilarious that his judgment of the merit of the Mac is web browsing, word documents, and excel spreadsheets. He really does paint himself like an old coot that wants to treat his computer like a typewriter.
How about editing some video, putting together a podcast, or producing a DVD? Compare the experience of that on a Mac with a PC. Ironically, most of the podcasts and video podcasts that John appears on uses a Mac for the production... he just never gets his hands dirty. - kuturak, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25quote from the article: The processes for some things, such as burning CDs, seem convoluted to me.
Convoluted? WHAT?
You insert the blank disk, open the folder, drag-and-drop the files you wish to burn and hit the ***** BURN button, you moron! - redfan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Read the next to last paragraph of the article.
"The big exception is the usability factor. And, in the end, that's probably what the majority of users care about."
The "just a Mac" (aka midrange) pretty much is the iMac, and the average user couldn't care less that it doesn't have expansion slots, an upgradeable CPU, etc. Even for more hard drive space, most users just get an external HD nowadays (I've done that on both my Mac and my PC). - clyde2801, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Don't you EVER again insult ***** like that!
- sgirard, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Get a multi-button USB mouse. They work fine with the Mac.
- damndj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20"I can see why the Mac is gaining market share, "
That is the only reason why this blow hard is now changing his tune. He doesn't want to be made a fool when the mac market share increases to a point where even Johnnyboy can't deny it's strong influence. - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Dvorak; "I'm a Mac.. and I'm a PC".
- CNAIF, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23Helps if your familiar with Twit.
- LoudMusic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Wow, he thinks rather highly of himself doesn't he? After years of telling us how bad Macs are he finally used one, and liked it. I think that means that WE were right about HIM. And just because he suddenly likes them means that they are, in fact, good, and were never good before that, making now the only time in history anyone should have ever bought a Mac. What a crack pot!
- domomike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16You're doing yourself a great disfavor if you let the buyers of a great product essentially chose whether or not you are going to buy that product.
Welcome to the real world. A computer is a computer. It's an object. That's it. My Mac is an object. I know people obsess over it, but that's all it is. I never once included the stereotypical owner profile in my comparison for buying a new computer when I chose to buy my Mac. That's just stupid. There are no politics to it, there's no loss of pride to it, there's no being afraid of being stereotyped as a "Mac user." It's just a freaking computer. - meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19as long as you use a browser that follows standards...cough....
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21because when working in excel you need the internets too, and everyone knows macs cant get on the internets!!
/sarcasm - ubuwalker31, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18i wish there was a way to kill an accidental double post...
- NSResponder, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Genius?
Sorry, can you point to anything he's ever done that indicates even average intelligence?
-jcr - jonahan52, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Mac Pro's Do
- operand, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14He used to write for MacUser so yes, he USED to use a Mac.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19So he's been bashing the Mac for how long and he is, just now bothering to try one, why am I not surprised?
- ElBruelsio, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14You can't seriously believe that. Dvorak is the original Crank! He doesn't jump on bandwagons for anything. Most of the time he's criticizing something for how flakey it is (i.e. Twitter).
- damnyooneek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I used to rag on macs and hated them but after using one for a little I loved it and haven't gone back. Its been 4 years now
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16You suck
- domomike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11With the market share of Apple computers rising now way more than ever, why would you ever say "OS X will stay at 5% and even Linux will overshadow it?"
And for the question why Apple doesn't let OS X run on non-Apple hardware, search for articles on this subject dating back to when Apple moved to Intel processors. There are countless reasons why Apple doesn't open OS X. It would be economical suicide. - NewChar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Who?
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I'm gonna go ahead and admit that sometimes my apps fail to respond and need to be forc quit. Usually its from ridiculous javascript in safari or photoshop being a jerkwad. Aside from that though its pro.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Hardware is not entirely basic PC stuff, Apple sources from places that meet their quality control and performance standards. The components may be the same but the difference is a pack of engineers found the best combination and did all the testing for you.
That said, Apple does need a mid-range box, but it is generally accepted that that is what the iMac line is for. -
