- Novagenesis, on 10/11/2007, -13/+165They won't repair it now, that's for sure
- GruffPelt, on 10/11/2007, -14/+136Spend thousands of bucks on a laptop and when your warranty claim is denied, instead of asking for visual proof of the spill (which Apple *will* provide), throw a tantrum, destroy your laptop and waste those thousands you spent.
Yeah, that'll show those Apple morons! - OpenFuture, on 10/11/2007, -6/+123Damn he probably could have gotten at least $500.00 on eBay for parts.
- ChrisXof, on 10/11/2007, -21/+130And Apple still won't give a damn either ;)
YouTube makes you do things you wouldn't have done otherwise... This dude is an Attention Whore - pauldy, on 10/11/2007, -10/+113Congrats Dell, he is your customer now.
- NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -22/+110If you don't get what you want, throw a tantrum!
Um, why's Apple supposed to care if this clown destroys a machine that he owns?
-jcr - ArchieAndrews, on 10/11/2007, -6/+55I am the last guy to defend Apple's repair service or their warranty department. I have my own personal history with them in a previous job as an Apple warranty depot service manager.
However, when they diagnose spill damage, it isn't on a whim. They have stickers/sensors inside the chassis that turn colors irreversibly in the presence of water and other liquids. Apart from this, anyone who has worked on electronics knows that if you spill inside an electronic device, unless you immediately completely disassemble it and dry everything with alcohol etc, it always leaves a residue. Always.
Had you given them the opportunity to prove to you that there was spill damage, you would have gotten your proof.
I call ***** on this one. Attention whore it is. - socomoddjob, on 10/11/2007, -27/+65Look how fat he is...of course he spilled something.
- HenvY, on 10/11/2007, -10/+45but will it blend?
- ryancalderoni, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30the axe would have been best
- SmackMyMac, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30I would have bought the black case for $100.
- john95127, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26You probably came off like a dick to customer support, you'll do much better if you ask nicely. I got Microsoft to fix a 2/12 year old x-box 360 because I told them my kids love it and they are only at my house evey other weekend so it was really only about 6 months old.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+27Yeah you really showed Apple.. stupid.
- MuntrealCanada, on 10/11/2007, -8/+29I bet the "liquid" he spilled was some "romance explosion"...i mean look at the guy...you know he's not getting any!
- Bob042, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25That's mature.
- halvertos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21turns out the battery was low...*zing!
- meldroc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21@sabin: Cell phones are equipped with water-damage stickers - they're white when they're fresh from the factory, but turn red when exposed to water.
I'll bet Macbooks have them too. And that the stickers are the first thing the techs look at when they open it up - if the sticker's red, no warranty support for you! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -19/+37Hey idiot, I don't care if you went surfing on it. DON'T tell warranty exchange that it was anywhere near water. This is his own fault for spilling liquid on it, for actually telling on himself, and then for actually smashing it.
The fact that he smashed it angers me a little because he apparently doesn't appreciate the value of expensive stuff. Maybe daddy will buy him a new one? eBay sells mac parts. That's all I'm saying. - dulakian, on 10/11/2007, -19/+37I did take the parts that still worked, the hdd, the ram, and the battery were all sold prior to me destroying the rest on the video. I messed up the screen taking it out or that would have been sold as well. The parts apple wanted to replace were the keyboard, the mainboard and the superdrive, so I left those alone. I'm not an idiot, just childish apparently.
- DFENS, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23What a jackass. Just wait for a different rep. My iPod took a tumble down stairs and shattered. One rep said I was hosed. I tried a second, and they let me buy a refurb iPod. They didn't have to do anything. Just have patience and don't be a complaining whacktard.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20I have to ask, did you ask for proof of the water damage?
- arkhangel78, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19I completely agree... if I spend that kind of money, you can bet your ass that I'll be calling back and getting another answer. Hell, if I don't believe the spill damage, I'd take it to a retail store or Apple Authorized Service Provider and have them show me. If they don't see it, then fix it under warranty.
Also, anyone else notice that the blog posting that's linked to is almost 6 months old? Where was your vocal opposition then? Why wait six months?? - Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20A friend of mine works at Reseach in Motion and apparently in their repair centre they actually have equipment to tell not only if something has suffered spill damage but also by what liquid it has been damaged. Apparently its a cool little device and I wouldn't be surprised if apple has something like this too. This guy know she silled something on his computer, knows hes not getting it repaired and knows hes out a thousand bucks because of his own carelessness.
- IchiroBoston, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17These stories are so annoying. Show us proof of no water damage...etc
Get apple to prove the water damage.
For my story... I had a MacBookPro (CoreDuo 1st gen) that kept frying my hard drives.
Sent it in a few times, was very reasonable with the guy on the phone, escalated it.
They just sent me a brand new MacBookPro (Core2Duo), no charge.
And like other people said, I have sent them iBooks with cracked, broken housing but I sent it in because it would not power up...etc. AppleCare covered the new motherboard but they replaced the housing and it looked brand new! (I have experienced this multiple times).
It would be nice if AppleCare had a "premium" accidental coverage like dell has. - NewOntario, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18If my mac failed on me and Applecare called me up and said that they can't honor it. First, I would call 1-800- MY-APPLE and try again a few times with other people at the end of the line. Then if that did not work then I would start calling up the BBB regarding this. After all of that, I would go out and get another mac cause I have not gotten a new one in a couple of years.
Smashing your $1500 MacBook cause you didn't want to pay around $700 for repairs. That's more idiotic than putting a fork in a plugged-in toaster while watching Fox News. - slunktoday, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21Dugg for being truthful instead of trying to be witty
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15@sabin: I've done warranty work on HP, Sony, Compaq, Dell, eMachines, you name it, and I seriously doubt anybody is going to call CSI: Miami out to test for "fluids" when they have a warehouse full of broken ***** they have to get through. Remember, it isn't going to a corporate office, it'll go to some tech who makes probably 12 bucks an hour to switch out motherboards. I'd just about guarantee he could have gotten this either fixed under warranty for free, or with eBay parts for cheap.
- shadowspawn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15yea personally i would've parted it out. On ebay, with the story, people would've bid high just to get into the swing.
- JDWTC, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19I am sorry but the guy is a ***** idiot..... first he spills ***** on his computer then he whines and wants apple to fix it while he smashes it like a petulant child?
- Moriya, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of your video? If you're going to make a statement by destroying a 1500 dollar laptop, it seems like cheating that you stripped it down first, and then failed to exclude that fact from your video.
Not that I endorse your "statement." I feel like it was ridiculous and childish - at least ask for visual proof of the spill first. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Sorry, my iBook G4 (which I bought just before the macbooks came out) had problems that they couldn't repair and they replaced it with a brand new macbook and did the data transfer without charging me a dime. This guy seems to be a moron.
- Pissoff, on 10/11/2007, -11/+21Why not take out your anger on the real cause of the problem.
(you) - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14"One of my friends suggested I should send it to consumerist, and I did. I regret that now, since most comments are simply personal attacks or claims that I'm a liar."
Maybe because the folks at Consumerist are on to something?
I worked for AppleCare's call center in Elk Grove a few years ago. Most conversations are recorded, and there is no way that anyone who wanted to keep their job for more than ten minutes would have never told you to 'buy another brand of laptop'. You're full of *****. - hadak, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13too bad. he could have sold his display to offset the rest of the cost
- 2point71, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13this dude has problems..
- RockStrongo1, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13He swings a sledge like a girl..
- bjornski, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10A better sign to show just how pissed he is at Apple would be to hold up the receipt of a newly purchased Windows machine.
- toxicgonzo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16Gallagher is a mac user?
- evilpettingzoo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Flash back one day..... "Yeah so I have this mac book problem that apple won't fix."
"You should smash that darn thing with a sledgehammer."
"Wow that's a great idea, thanks Gallagher you always know what to do." - rlutterb, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Should've requested visual proof, which undoubtedly there was. Then your rage could've been correctly directed toward the person/animal/object/sleepwalking episode that got the water into your machine in the first place.
What's more likely... a small, accidental, unknown water spill committed while in your care, or a company-wide conspiracy at Apple trying to defraud you?
edit: don't digg down dulakian... he's apparently the guy in the video. - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7http://www.dannemann.org.uk/images/morans.jpg
- mcic1984, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I don't know enough about the situation to comment whether Apple was right in refusing warranty. However I think destroying a computer like that is such a waste and a rather grim reflection of our culture (or lack of).
Parts could have been recycled. Or salvaged and repaired by others.
To be fair - this guy isn't alone and there are enough videos on YouTube, etc of people smashing electronics. However, I think people in other parts of the world would simply be rather horrified at the waste. - Stadsport, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9He could have repaired it himself or sold it for parts and bought a new one. What a newbie.
- Absinthminded64, on 10/11/2007, -16/+21@Nova agreed! I don't think they would have fixed it regardless of the end it met. You also don't go around smashing things like a 3yr old unless you know for sure that it's a goner. He mentioned a spill over the phone and tried to take that back once he learned that it wasn't covered.
I'm digging this one just so more people might see a real idiot liar in the wild. Watch his facial expressions and body language as he tells his avid viewers why his trusty macbook no longer works. - nstern2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Anyone can buy a refurbished iPod.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=EC0F3C63&node=home/specialdeals/ipod
Apple is just like any other company, If it breaks because you have done something to it that isn't covered under their warranty don't expect them to care very much. Unless you are willing to pay to fix it. - thecompkid, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13I'm sure you actually did spill something and you are just being an ***** about it. No really, it's true, no sane person would do such a retarded thing. You obviously had a little accident. Ok, it happens to everyone. But you figured maybe you could screw the system by claiming that your macbook "didn't wake up". I have news for you. Computers don't just decide to break. They don't go from working one night to sitting on a table to broken the next morning. There is something you're choosing to hide, three guesses as to what.
Apple is far from a perfect company. I am definitely sure of the fact that they can and have messed up on many an occasion. I'm not even against you trying to get your computer fixed under warranty when you spilled something on it, seeing as I would probably do the same thing, ***** as I may be. But acting like a 5-year old and throwing a tantrum because your oh-so-cunning little plan didn't work? Good thing you destroyed that computer, 'cause it was way too complicated for you. - MuntrealCanada, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12He sure showed Apple......douchebag
- andrewa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I had this experience with a Dell once. Oops, wind blows curtain, curtain knocks wine glass, glass upends over laptop. *pzzzzt*. OK, so I tactfully say that my laptop just blew up and don't mention the whole wind/curtain/wine incident. They take it back for a while and come back to tell me that not only was there a spillage, but also what the substance was - white wine. I'm not sure if they identified the vintage, but damned good detective work. I had even very carefully mopped up all traces that I could see from the motherboard before shipping it off to them.
- Tollboi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I have to say if i worked for apple and saw this I would care very much. Who is not going to second guess buying an extended warranty with apple after seeing this vid.
