"There's more software available for Apples than for any other system you can buy." - DarkBlueAnt, on 05/12/2009, -2/+46I honestly clicked this topic thinking it was going to be about making bread out of an apple.
I'm a little embarrassed, but not enough to not post a comment about it. - shervin123, on 05/12/2009, -6/+38ITS PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!

- digitalpencil, on 05/12/2009, -2/+29'Personal Computers' were made possible thanks to a number of innovations primarily the Integrated Circuit and the Microprocessor but the first commercially available, off-the-shelf PC was the Apple II, invented by Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, introduced in 1977. It was a huge leap forward from the Apple I which was a production bare circuit board kit hand-built by Woz, that had to be assembled.
The Apple II was the first true PC with an integrated keyboard, sound, plastic case, color display and eight internal expansion slots that was commercially available (hence 'personal' computer) and according to wikipedia, originally retailed at $1298.
'Computers' and 'Personal Computers' are not the same thing. Apple *did* invent the PC, they didn't invent the computer. - ncapone, on 05/12/2009, -0/+23@repairman2003: RTFA

He's eating like a god damn guerrilla.
- anexanhume, on 05/12/2009, -1/+18That's the unscariest guerrilla I've ever seen. Where's his camo, his AK-47?
- JohnDoe789, on 05/12/2009, -3/+19So Apple IS a PC?!
Mindblown - kholburn, on 05/12/2009, -1/+17Young-uns, you weren't there. Apple marketed the first consumer grade personal computer with screen and keyboard, the Apple II. You could say they invented the "personal" computer, it's not too much of a stretch. Like all inventions it was built on everyone else's inventions and lots of PCs suddenly sprang up after it. CP/M Z80s were OK too. The term "personal computer" was of course made popular a bit later by IBM.
- insky60, on 05/12/2009, -0/+13Who has time for manners when you're staging a revolution?

Obviously, this was back before Apple decided to start charging twice as much for the same power their PC counterparts had.
Oh yeah, in before massive diggdowns by the Apple community. Which would be ironic in a way since I own an Apple as well as a PC. - thenewmadmax, on 05/12/2009, -0/+6Same!
"1 part apple juice, 2 parts flour...." - eatrains, on 05/12/2009, -1/+7Remember when Apple paid attention to the business market? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
- digitalpencil, on 05/12/2009, -2/+8@joebaloney: Yeah, it largely relies on how you define a 'personal computer' but the Apple II is widely acknowledged to be the first because it was pre-assembled, worked out-the-box and came with all necessary components to be classified as a PC.
The Altair 8800 on the other hand, is generally seen as a microcomputer kit and was even termed as "the world's first minicomputer kit" as it didn't come equipped with a screen or keyboard for input/output.
@j2002: The Commodore PET 2001 was equally a PC but was released 3 months after the Apple II. Hardly eons i'm sure you'll agree but enough that it cannot claim the 'first PC' badge ;)
Regardless, there's no need for a pissing contest. I just thought i'd clarify that they did in fact, invent the PC. The issue is that how you define a 'PC' is largely down to semantics and what Apple really did was to create the first pre-packaged computer for commercial use. They certainly didn't invent the microcomputer but they've equally never pretended they did.
It's interesting though that people often get very defensive about Apple as if Jobs himself ran down their cat and never apologized. I guess it has to do with the perceived snobbery attached to the brand but like them or not, they've been very instrumental in how we use machines today:
Lisa was the first commercial machine with a GUI OS. The Powerbook 500 series was the first laptop to have a touchpad (or 'trackpad' according to Apple) and the Newton MessagePad was realistically the first true PDA in that it was light-years ahead of everything else available that were really nothing more than glorified calculators with rudimentary memo storage. - protodon, on 05/12/2009, -2/+7I remember when people used to read.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/12/2009, -0/+5I thought that's what it was for too. And to show how disappointed I am, I'm burying all the pro-Apple comments.

- digitalpencil, on 05/12/2009, -0/+3^ Well yeah, that was kind of my point.. It all depends on what you define as a 'personal computer' and many have a claim to it but Apple was the first to commercially release a packaged computer involving all necessary components to be termed a 'personal computer'.
Those answers you just referenced in wiki.answers are pointing to anything from microcomputer kits to the difference engine.. The first answer cites (i presume) the IBM 5150 which was released 4 years after the Apple II.
It's all semantic swings and roundabouts i'll agree but that doesn't change the fact that the first true PC was the first commercially available machine that required no other components to be used by an individual user. OED defines 'personal computer' as "a microcomputer designed for use by one person at a time." Given that all previous examples of commercially available machines required other components not packaged together, these tend not to be classified as PCs but as 'microcomputer kits'.
Anyway, i wasn't trying to incite a flamewar. I have no vested interest in any party, i'm just interested in the history. AFAIC (and most other people) Apple were the first to produce a PC in the form of the Apple II, all previous examples were microcomputer kits released for hobbyists (including the Apple I). - jiggawatt, on 05/12/2009, -6/+9Advertisements with so many words are so old school. Can't read that. Attention span too short. Someone summarize into bite size pretty slogan plz. kthnxbye.

- crazygamer67688, on 05/12/2009, -4/+6You CAN run a native installation on a Macintosh. I did it with my Macbook, and it runs just fine. Hook up a mouse with two buttons, and a windows-type keyboard and you are set.
Therefore (Mac OS X + Windows(native) ) > Windows - ricodued, on 05/12/2009, -2/+4I love it when after people say something likely to digg them down, they have to state that they triple-boot Linux/OS X/Windows in an effort to not be dugg down for their attack on x company, and is likely a huge-ass lie.
- FredFredrickson, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2I saw him live too... and he opened for Lewis Black. That was an awesome show.
