- IslandSaint, on 01/08/2008, -3/+47This is huge! This will be so much easier than using Handbrake.
- the_mole1314, on 01/08/2008, -3/+38By far one of the coolest things now, can we get all DVDs to do this now? Yay Apple & Fox!
- moonaust, on 01/08/2008, -4/+33Saves me 20 min with Handbrake.....
- Refrag, on 01/08/2008, -4/+33Classy watermarks, TUAW.
- dcharti, on 01/08/2008, -0/+17This got around a few weeks ago with the original confirmations from the likes of the New York Times. Apple confirmed that iTunes-compatible movies getting distributed on these DVDs and Blu-ray/HD-DVDs was part of a deal to raise wholesale movie prices in the iTunes Store, which will help bring more studios on board.
- totorototoro, on 01/08/2008, -0/+16Hmmmmm..how is this going to work with Netflix? I'm guessing..not :p
- blocguy, on 01/08/2008, -3/+19Hmmm... maybe now I'll start buying more DVDs now.
- fani, on 01/08/2008, -11/+25This is great and all, but in just another topic earlier today I read that BluRay DVDs would include a file for PSP playback and people were complaining that we should have the power to decode them ourselves....
But now that Apple does it, its suddenly good and divine ?
What the hell ? - HypocriteDigg, on 01/08/2008, -2/+15No so much easier, but definitely a time saver.
- exomni, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9Very, very cool. This reminds me of Iron and Wine (and probably a lot of other artists) including Download Codes on their Vinyl album releases.
- InorganicMatter, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8NO! DivX/XviD + MP3 is already an aging dinosaur. If they are going to standardize a mobile format, it needs to be H.264 + AAC in the MP4 container, and it needs to mandate chapter points and separate non-burned subtitle streams. They need to implement a correct mobile standard, not just the one that has the widest adoption base. Make it good, and people will adopt it.
- Fubeman, on 01/08/2008, -2/+9My favorite part is the line where it says "Not compatible with Sony PSP and Microsoft Zune." As Monty Burns would say "Eggggggsalent."
- Radan, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6Splendid, but let me guess. Like always, there's not a chance in hell that this will be supported anywhere outside the US? Life is so unfair sometimes... :/
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -2/+8WTF?
- WaterMedia, on 01/08/2008, -1/+7Yeah, but here you do have that option. You have a solid DVD which you can rip and modify to any format if so inclined. As an added freebie you get this neat iTunes version ready for you.
You aren't locked into anything and that is the key! - nightmare1228, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6With drm on music going away and now this, things are starting to finally look better for the consumer.
- acbeck58, on 01/08/2008, -2/+7Sweet! Now I'll be able to watch PTV without the FCC censoring it.
- Giga, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Perhaps later.
- mattjewell, on 01/08/2008, -3/+8That doesn't even make sense, stop trying to get dugg up by those who think being different is "cool"
- InorganicMatter, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6I don't like that picture with the serial number explanation on it. Another draconian DRM scheme? I'll stick to ripping discs with Handbrake: it takes like 15 minutes on my computer, and doesn't have any DRM.
- gage006, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6What is this "Google" some of you are talking about? How does it work? Fill me in!
- monkeyrun, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4So Apple will most likely get a small cut from DVD sold.
- jgallagher721, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4When?
- MikeTRose, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5True, but this is the first sighting "in the wild" that we know of.
- videolab, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4That is exactly what I thought of when I first read this. I think that is the point of the serial number that they are talking about. Or they might just get a different disk that does not include the file. Who knows.
- dkoon, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3What the hell is Desktop Video Player Space...
- theskyman, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Handbrake allows you to RIP a DVD and convert it to an MPEG file that you can play on iTunes and your iPod.
- node3, on 01/09/2008, -0/+3A PSP video will be useful to an extremely small minority of computer users, while an iTunes (and therefore Mac, Windows, iPod, iPhone and AppleTV) compatible file will be useful to pretty much everyone, so of course fewer people are going to complain about iTunes videos vs PSP videos.
- JoeBaynham, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3Looks like they just did...
- longofest, on 01/08/2008, -0/+3no watermarks:
http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/08/fox-dvds-to-in ... - Trixrox, on 01/08/2008, -2/+4Yeah, they should just drop a h.264 file on the dvd, non drmed so you can use what you want. People can rip the dvd anyways.....it wont encourage more piracy, and people will pay for quality...
- cjmal, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3On HIS album releases. It's one guy, not a group. "Iron & Wine is the stage and recording name of folk rock singer-songwriter Sam Beam"
- EntropyFan, on 01/08/2008, -4/+6You miss the point. Having DRM locked content (like these movies will be) is only a good thing if it comes from Apple.
Anyone else, an it is anti-consumer and evil. - shinelikeitdoes, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3a step in the right direction but we all know just like music, the ultimate goal is going to be media-less downloadable, non-drm files.
- WaterMedia, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3And I hate the sun. And God. And Puppies. [ * fuggin puppies* ]
Seriously, it is just software. If you don't like it use other software. Hard concept? - jordn, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2...20 mins?! what are specs are you using to re-encode?
- inactive, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2Search for it you ***** idiot.
- Curiousity, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2There's already going to be enough of a decrease in the quality of the DVD file due to the iPod copy. If they start adding even more copies, every copy will be of a lower quality.
I'd rather have one DRM-free high quality file that I can encode to whatever format I want. - MacParrot, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2How about it just being a H.264 file? Then it wouldn't matter what OS you have or what player you have as long as it can play an H.264 file. There are other choices besides QuickTime to play these files.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 01/09/2008, -0/+2awwwwwwwww yea.
- mym6, on 01/08/2008, -0/+2I swear that the latest Harry Potter DVD mentions something about a free digital copy as well...I haven't put it in my Mac yet. I should check tonight.
- pyrates, on 01/08/2008, -1/+3Just allow us to rip the dvd and encode it all within iTunes. That's what needs to happen. Not this BS copy of the movie on the dvd that is only compatible with iTunes and video ipods. It should be equivalent to ripping a cd here. That is ideal and I'll settle for nothing less.
- EvilDude, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1A standard would be great, but it wouldn't be followed very well. For example, iPod might be able to paly 1.5mbit h264, but has limited deblocking support, and in the end is almost better usign the 2.5mb mpeg4. However, the PSP supports h264, and it supports it very well, and is the better supported codec.
So unless you want a common, yet ***** looking file, it is better to include separate files for the iPod, PSP and other major players. There will always be a power difference in devices and there is no point settling for the lowest common denominator when the quality suffers so much. - JoeDiggsIt, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I've never had a problem with iTunes. :(
- Kypt, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I wonder if rented DVDs will have them as well...if its this easy I thinking the MPAA will not be happy with people renting, click/dragging, and returning. Taken we could do this now but this would be a lot faster and everyone will be capable of doing.
Who knows maybe they'll have 2 versions, rentable for blockbuster, netflix, and consumer ones... - Urkel, on 01/08/2008, -1/+2No, you didn't know this was coming. You only heard a RUMOR that it MIGHT happen. And considering how many rumors pop up every year then it is pretty much understood that no rumor is true until you actually see proof.
- happyseamonster, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1HHhhmmmnn... A Family Guy DVD sent in by "Stewart"?
- hit9ent, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1this is straight from fox with instructions... check it out;)
http://foxdigitalcopy.com/ - squirmalicious, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1No doubt... this should be standard.
