- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+70> "The average Joe is well aware that new iPod's are coming tomorrow."
Your concept of the average Joe is so far off base I don't even know where to start with this one.... Perhaps you need to look up the definition of "average". - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45It's called market saturation. After some amount of time, everyone who wants an iPod has one. You can either try to convince more people they need an iPod, or change it enough such that people who already have one want to buy a new one.
- Clodagh, on 10/12/2007, -14/+49The sales is bound to slow, when everyone is waiting for the new one.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Yeah, it's amazing that Apple's new product is selling better than their product that hasn't been updated in a while. Alert the presses!
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26Didn't you know? Macbook is an Ipod accessory.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23or maybe most people that are interested in ipods have them by now.. it's a possibility
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19bingo. why buy an iPod if they are throwing one in for free?
- Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32Well I'm certainly happy with my MacBook... very happy.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Is it a sign of slowing iPod sales [therefore time for a new one], or a sign of the amazing success of the macbook?
Ummm..both? - Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The apple store only ranks sales from itself. Most people buy ipods from other stores, which aren't factor in, and as already mentioned, most people who want an ipod already have one.
- swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15that isn't only in canada.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20I find it fascinating that i'm getting dugg down when 1) I just stated the facts of the market for any product, and 2) I'm a huge apple fanboy myself. I was just pointing out the truth of the situation here... calm down, guys!
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16flag564 = just bitter because he bought a Dell DJ, which is now even more defunct than the day he bought it. I can feel his cybermisery from here.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20It's not you. People are weird on Digg and digg down comments for no reason, but mainly just one's that speak the truth.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11It's a sign that APPLE IS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS!
I'm sorry, I just had to throw in the standard Apple-going-out-of-business statement. - Crackshot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11yea they threw in a nano and a printer when I got a macbook so that could be partially responsible for a drop in sales.
- jcpudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You might want to check your stats on:
"But also consider that the sales of Mac's have been very slow for the last few years"
No they haven't, they have actually accelerated over the last few years...
"People didn't buy G4/G5 models after the announcement of the Intel partnership"
After the Intel partnership, Apple had record sales.
I love it when people don't have a clue but act like they do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't the think free iPod deal would change these stats. I got a free iPod with my MacBook, but had to buy them both regularly on the receipt. Then, I mailed in a rebate with the receipt and got a check a while later. So, people are still officially "buying" iPods with that deal, they're just free after rebate.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -5/+113 reasons why the iPod sales could be slowing down:
1. Everybody who ever wanted one, got one already
2. It's not so cool anymore to have an iPod (among other reasons, because of #1)
3. In the past people would buy a second or third iPod for the bigger disks, but now it's actually hard for the average user to fill up their whole 30-60GB disks (and I mean _average_ user, not us geeks who read digg, ok? ;))
So at the end I think that the iPod market is getting saturated, both on demand and features..Apple gotta be _very_ creative to make me and a lot of other people to buy yet another iPod so soon. I got video playback, got a whopping 60GB disk with not only all my music but all my pictures and important documents and still some 8Gb to spare... what else could I need? - WISPGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Weither iPod sales have slowed or not, there is something to be said to the MacBook doing so well. Apple has done a great job with the new MacBooks.
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7iPod sales aren't down.... the MacBook is just HOT!
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7stealthboy, you didnt say Ipod is the coolest thing ever invented.
Thus you go down.
As a fanboy you should know this by now. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Apple has something like 10% of the laptop market right now. That's enough to make the Mac a fully mainstream platform again.
Microsoft will soon find themselves at 70% of the market, not 85%. They will be less nice than a Mac and less cheap and flexible than Linux. When hegemony is all that is left to justify buying your product, you are truly on the slippery slope. - CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6maybe he doesn't know that the nano IS an iPod?
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think everyone has already said at least one variation of your comment.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maybe most people who want an iPod already have one. I know people who are waiting for the next one.
I have a 40gb 3rd gen and I don't have any reason to want to shell out $400 again anytime soon, unless Steve orders me to, then I must do as he commands. ;) (kidding of course) - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Two days? Isn't the keynote tomorrow? Being as how Apple has some facination with tuesdays and all...
- tikistyle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What can I say? The MacBooks are mad hot, i love mine, and haven't NOT regretted any purchase more! I also purchased an iPod at the same time...so 1 / 1 there.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mostly it's because iPods are really Q4 holiday sale items, and not summer blockbusters.
- GiglioSlapnuts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5or maybe it is because thousands of college students are buying new computers for the beginning of the shcool year.
- julielacombe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Hmmm, maybe this has something to do with the fall of popularity of the iPod.. there's something I read about this this morning.
http://geeksaresexy.blogspot.com/2006/09/ipod-disappearing-up-its-own-headphone.html
Not sure I agree completely with the author, but the person has some valid points. - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The other option that Apple should exploit is demand through innovation.
Arguably that's why the 3rd gen had such a short life and why people continued to buy the 5th gen even though it was a marginal storage upgrade.
If Apple keeps innovating with the iPod, I see no reason why sales couldn't continue. I think that iPods need to be compared more to PC's than toasters. They become obsolete and thereby provide an incentive for upgrade. A toaster doesn't become obsolete. Sure you can get one with cooler features, but show me a person who gets rid of a perfectly functional toaster just to get some new features and I will show you a complete idiot. People get rid of perfectly working computers and iPods for better ones all the time. - CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Apple.ca seems to be selling more 13.3" Macbooks than iPods. Is it a sign of slowing iPod sales [therefore time for a new one], or a sign of the amazing success of the macbook?"
Your title is very generic, and implies that all iPod sales are slowing. An accurate title would be "Macbook outselling video iPod" which is much less interesting and probably would have driven less traffic to the site.
I still say that if not completely inaccurate, it certainly is misleading. - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyway, I guess Apple might be happy with this inversion, especially their engineers... after all they're a computer company (and a very good one at that), not an mp3-player company.
- albertross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2'The new MacBook is possibly the best thing Apple has done since the iPod.'
http://www.laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=132&part=glance - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Considering you can get a 30gb iPod Video for $200 on Apple's refurb section they might all be going there instead.
Normally the refurbs are just $20-30 off, but these are $100 off MSRP and just $30 more than a refurbished 4gb Nano. Got one for my g/f and it looks brand new.
Sounds nice through my Shure e3's and my music is ripped at 256kbps in AAC format. I don't know what people bitched about with the sound quality. - notfred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I put it to you that most iPod buyers buy in stores, instead of online.
Besides, it's such a vague list, Apple can make it mean whatever they want to.
You're all assuming "top seller" means quantity, not $. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats what I did. Works and looks just like a new one, except cost 50% less!
- tinygibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People are switching. I work at a national call center for desktop support (pda devices). Anecdotally, I am seeing many, many more calls from people who have recently switched buy buying a macbook.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"so I highly doubt anyone is "holding off" for the new iPod"
Well, I am. And I have an iPod already. - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm AMAZED that Apple has waited this long to release a new iPod, normally they replace it when it's at it's prime. AKA iPod mini.
- VanillaBaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, give me a break!
"Macbook outsells iPod" also implies something different than "Macbook outsells all models of iPod combined", doesn't it ?
But implications are not at issue here. Syntax is. Grammar is. Language is.
Please confirm it for yourself ... but I'll say it again, "Macbook outsells iPod" can be true if the Macbook outsells one model of iPod. It might not be the best way of saying it, but importantly, the headline WAS NOT FALSE. It was not wrong.
What IS wrong is you deciding to substitute "iPod" with "all models of iPod" - that is what is wrong; because grammatically, you are not entitled to do so. It doesn't mean the same thing. iPod ≠ all models of iPod, kay? - VanillaBaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I still say that if not completely inaccurate, it certainly is misleading."
Rather than being misleading, I would call the headline, "vague". It didn't mention everything that it might have mentioned (model of iPod, Canada, online store), so it was "incomplete" and "vague".
But not misleading - only those who presumed (incorrectly according to grammar) that "iPod" = "all models of iPod combined" were misled, and they misled themselves.
But here's the thing. Ignore our argument over the headline for a moment, and check the warning at the top of this page. It says: "Warning: The Content in this Article May be Inaccurate"
Note: CONTENT of ARTICLE
Not the digg headline, not the digg synopsis ... not even the article's headline.
When you are marking something as inaccurate, you are supposed to be making that judgement upon the content of the article, not the digg blurb or headline. Whether the digg headline is misleading or not, or vague or not, is irrelevant.
Another thing, if you were disappointed that the Macbook was only outselling one model of iPod, and not all models combined, then why didn't you express that annoyance or disappointment by marking this as lame, instead of "inaccurate" ? - sdpenner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Flag boy's got some issues...
It's pretty clear that a lot of people like iPods. It's also pretty clear that more than a few people like the MacBook.
So, why does it burn you so bad...You work at Creative or something?? - milkmage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@flag465
said "Do you think the majority of people out there even know or care about these rumor "new ipod" stories like you do?"
Like you? - ahem.. I clicked on your name and 8 of the 15 stories you have recently dugg have apple, mac or ipod in the headline..
WHY DO YOU CARE!?
you do not understand, therefore you fear - a trait common in lower life forms. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Give me a break. MACBOOK OUTSELLS IPOD! implies something VERY different than MACBOOK OUTSELLS ONE MODEL OF IPOD.
- VanillaBaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And I just noticed that in your reply to me you said, "your headline", but I wasn't the submitter of this story.
- Pliep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, what makes you think the "top sellers" list in the store is in fact an accurate representation of sales and not just a publicity box that pushes sales in a way Apple likes it?
- funkychikensays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is misleading, it should have said apple canada
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Crazy thought here...it is September. I and a lot of others are simply waiting for the holiday season before we would even consider buying any "toys". This just isn't a good time of year for any kind of consumer electronics.
