- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+93Yes, most have announced the availability of core 2 notebooks months ago but the reality is that they have just started shipping. You can hardly spot a few right now at the largest retailer in my town. Apple does not announce, they ship.
- aloe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+92yeah but Apple is able to sell it when they announce it rather then having us wait a couple months before we could get our hands on it.
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+66next step: Mac Mini with Core2Duo
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47Cue all the "but I just bought a MacBook; Apple sucks!" comments....
/technology constantly improves; deal with it - bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43Hint hint:
http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html
the Core Duo icon links to a non-existent page...
http://www.apple.com/macmini/intelcore2duo.html - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -13/+51So this means that my 3 week old MacBook is now obsolete.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32I'm still thinking about buying a Macbook Pro... that weak intel video card just doesn't do it for me
- will-rom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Take it back to the Apple store and exchange it.
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26You shouldn't have. It was so clear it was about to happen any of these days...
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27The macbook will have integrated graphics for a while to come. Apple knows how to segment their market.
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Yes but DVD-DL, bigger hard drives, 1 GB DDRs as standard in 2.0 models and potentially 802.11n is something to consider.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Correct link: http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html
- BGraceTFaith, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Its not even a chipset upgrade. The Core 2 Duo is still running on the chipset that the current Core Duos are running on. This new revision is still running at 667MHz as opposed to the 800 MHz that the Santa Rosa chipset will provide next spring.
I've yet to figure out why everyone is so excited about the Core 2 Duos when none of the Merom chips are running at full capacity. Why sink the money into a Core 2 Duo system when it is handicapped as soon as it hits the logic board.
Next spring, when the Santa Rosa chipset is released, will be the time to buy a NEW MacBook. For now, I'll stick with my Rev A MacBook. - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Firewire 800 in the consumer level notebook? Why? No one would use it.
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Call Apple and return it. Ask them to waive the restocking fee (if there is one).
- rodzilla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20and Santa.... and the Tooth Fairy.... and the Easter Bunny....
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19You want a GPU buddy? Get a MacBook Pro!
- threemagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Not to mention it's no longer the first generation!
I've said it before and I'll say it again.. doesn't matter what company or whether it's software or hardware:
1.0 (one point Oh)
Just say no. - dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I know at least one other person noted this, but to emphasize, the black one is now *only* $50 more than a comparable white one.
- Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Its 25% faster, but only in certain tests. When it comes down to the average of all of the tests, you'll probably be about right.
- GeneralChang, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Damnit, still that crappy GMA 950 chip set.
I like the size and finish of the macbook and now it has 2duo the only thing holding me back from buying one is the graphics chipset. guess I'll just have to hold out for another 3 months. - icebrand, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Yeah it sucks if you just got a macbook. Others have been waiting eagerly for this day (like me). Huge decision to make here; go for a shiny brand new macbook or pick up a refurbished 1st gen one. First gen refurb macbook prices are slashed at apple's site; low end is $899, middle is $999 and the black one is $1099.
decisions decisions.... - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16At this point the Mini is the last 32-bit machine in Apple's lineup. I wonder how long that will last?
-jcr - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Oh thank god it's just a chipset + dvdr upgrade (just recently bought a macbook, would have died if it got discrete graphics)
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Frankie, "Who wants a brick that isn't upgradable" ??
Laptops aren't upgradable either, yet people have no qualms about buying those. The Mini is an excellent machine for someone who doesn't care about upgrading the pieces inside. Think of it as a monitor-less MacBook. If you don't need a laptop, and already have the monitor setup you like, it's a good option. - praxum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You have 14 days I believe to return the product.
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespolicies.html - sleepyness, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15At 4200rpms...I wouldn't want the 200gbs. Too slow.
- combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Apple supported DVD-RAM 8 years ago. It was a failure then, it is still a failure today.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15You forgot the Flying Spaghetti Monster :(
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13To be fair, It's a Macbook, not a Macbook Pro... how many regular consumers actually need Firewire 800? (Damn, dohidied beat me to it)
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13norbiu: Welcome to the world of technology. Since this is your first day here, I'd like to take this opportunity to show you around.
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12You don't have to tell us twice koregaonpark. We heard you the first time.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@sleepyness
As you increase areal density, RPM can decrease and maintain the same amount of data transfer. Don't get caught up in the number game. - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I paid the upcharge for black. And so did almost everyone else I know that bought one for work. The white one looks like a toy, and is not nearly as professional looking when sitting around a conference table of executives. The black one is worth the extra $$$.
An interesting side note... Have you ever looked at appliances for your house? A black fridge is typically $100-200 more than a white one of the same model. - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm waiting for this one to replace my PPC Mac Mini..
- yabos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That's why it says up to 25%
- k4zz4m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9well heres a hint : mac mini's cpu IS NOT SOLDERED TO THE MOBO! go out there and upgrade!
- CountSessine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I've become very impressed with Apple over the last year because of the lower priced models and the switch to intel, but if there's one thing that still keeps me from Apple it's THE CRAZY APPLE FREAKS WHO WORSHIP EVERYTHING APPLE DOES."
You mean like the crazy freaks that show up in every mac thread just to say "macs suk" or something similarly articulate? Why are you letting a small but vocal minority stand in the way of something you (seem to) want? There are stupid people who buy macs, and there are others who are particular to PCs. Why not just do what's right for you? - FHKE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I would rather prefer Apple puts eSATA connectivity in the computers.

"The GMA 950 is regarded as the best integrated chip set there is.."
I hope that was sarcasm.
Straight quote from Anandtech:
"Out of the integrated cards that we tested, the ATI part came out on top in the performance tests."
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2427&p=1 - carebearwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Exactly. Even if it was an ATI X1300 or nVidia 7300, that'd do.
Anything but onboard video. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Maybe my Macbook will break under warranty this year.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11thats a redirect because there are no powerbooks.
this is a weak submission - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Correct spelling? It's DIGG, dude
- guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12That must hurt.
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ norbiu:
I specialize in disposing of "obsolete" equipment, so if you are unhappy with your "useless" item, just sent it on my way. :-) - J3R3MY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It looks like you can get up to a 200gb hard drive in those babies now. Before it was 120gb.
- lutzlstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A friend of mine that works at an Apple Store told me that if I alerted the Internets to the 14 day return policy, he'd have a weight lifted from his shoulders. (Apple employees are not supposed to post to Digg, as many of us know.) For a 10% restocking fee, people that just bought a MacBook can return their machine for the new one. Just making sure that's been said for anyone wondering (or upset) about the new model just coming out.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The graphics chipset in my old 12" powerbook outperformed the GMA in my new Macbook, by about 30%. I know it wasn't integrated in the PB, but still. The Macbook is the new hotness, and you would think that they would put a graphics chipset in it that was at least comparable.
- Freps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Check this out:
The 2.0 Core 2 Duo MacBook has 4MB of shared L2 cache, but the 1.83 (white only) has only 2MB!! With the other additions, it's worth getting the slight processor upgrade for that much of a boost in performance. -
