- Kdogg3403, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22You're nuts. I use iPhoto all the time and it works great. I wouldn't trade it for anything else. Plus it comes with every mac. Oh and mac didn't come up with the program... Apple did.
- sholt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10well, for starters, you can't buy music through iPhoto...

And it's typical of the haters to be so uneducated as to misspell typical... - zapod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"yet it's tipical of the mac 'you never want to look at your directories' mentality."
I'm organising photos - why should I concern myself where they're stored? That's the computer's job, or am I missing the point? - TheTrueAPlus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6http://www.duggmirror.com/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Complicated method of sharing photos. I rather just buy a network HD enclosure and put it there.
Great read if you're REALLY into Macs and need an automated way to share your photos. Boring read for others. - zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They made iTunes cross-platform, why cant they with iPhoto. It seems reasonable, I kind of like how it manages photos. It's more refined compared to Picasa in my opinion.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Oh so it's not porn?
- joncarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This comment is obviously not from a Mac user, as evident by their confusion between 'Mac' (a product) and 'Apple' (the company).
While iPhoto is not a professional tool, it does not pretend to be either. It is perfect for the novice user. - zapod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ ijustlost
While iPhoto startup isn't as snappy as it could be, it's otherwise pretty quick on my Mac G5. As for not choosing to save changes, there's always Photos>Revert to Original in the menus. Of course, this does lose any intermetiate changes, but then it's not meant to be Photoshop. - Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's what I did, although I'm kind of jammed right now because we've got Macs with different versions of iLife on them and Apple likes to change the file format with every release. I've been waiting for months to buy a family license of iLife07 so I can get them all synced up.
- straube, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yea I love connecting my camera and that program starts itself.
- hodgsonb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can achieve a synchronised folder across XP and Macs using www.foldershare.com - user friendly and works. Also free.
- JBracy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's what the "Shared" folder in the Users directory is for. Or the "Public" folder inside each users Home Directory. How much easier do you want it?
- ijustlost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iPhoto does make at least 2 copies of all my photos when I import them (one in 'data' one in 'original' and then one in 'modified' if I modify it), which isn't the best use of space, especially with a typical file size of 2Mb.
Plus it takes ages to load, eats up system resources and runs really slowly, even on my Intel Core duo 2Ghz which should handle that sort of thing pretty quickly.
Also there's no way of choosing not to save changes you've made in the 'edit' mode, short of killing the program.
Apart from that it's a pretty nice of software, just slopilly coded - bewebste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The story description is a bit misleading, since this "syncing" doesn't go both ways. It's basically an automated backup of your iPhoto library to another computer over a network with an added script to relaunch iPhoto on that machine. It could be useful, but I wouldn't call it "syncing".
- peterjhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As to the comment about mac users not wanting to look at our directories, was that flame bait? or do you have statistics to back that up?
iPhoto and iTunes are "library managers" They help us users manage tens of thousands of files. With iPhoto it does even more, as it keeps a copy of the original images as well as the edits (along with the thumbnails). I have about 8,000 digital photos and I do not want to use the Finder (or Windows Explorer) to do all that work.
So if you mean, Mac users are smart and do things programatically, instead of by moving a mouse around, yep. You got us there.
Sure I could use "ln -s" to create photo albums on the command line, but I don't have to.
The articles use of rsync makes me happy. The iPhoto library itself is not made to support multiple concurrent users. Sure it might work, but I doubt it.. rsync will only copy over changes to the directory structure/files. This means that your first sync will take a long time, but later changes will be incremental. Exactly what I need for my purposes.
I tried moving my iphoto library to a network attached disk, but the performance was terrible. - pyrates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@dmoney06
did you read the article? If your method was used, iphoto would have to be running all the time. This avoids that. - junesix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple isn't in the business of selling digital cameras so there's no reason to port iPhoto.
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Easier way to do this.
1. Turn on Photo Sharing in the Preferences.
2. Be within wireless range.
3. Connect to the other person's library.
4. Copy any photos you want onto you desktop (or a folder of choice) and you are good to go. - JBracy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You might want to add the 'E' option to your rsync command. This tells rsync to keep all of the Apple specific information that rsync usually ignores. my typical rsync command is:
rsync -azvE --delete --exclude '.DS_Store' (source) (destination) - kris33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of course you can turn that off.
- staed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ ijustlost
Try pressing Esc while in "Edit mode". Throws you back into the picture listing without applying the changes. - perre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Scroll down (way down) on the dugg mirror to get to the article.
- bulbvivid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2thumb down
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ Yea I love connecting my camera and that program starts itself.
try using a little pref pane app called defaulapp, you retarded ape. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How about just one iPhone library across multiple users of the same Mac. I find it annoying that by default iTunes and iPhone libraries are locked out for any other user, and if you started off with a single user based library, trying to make it public is annoyingly difficult. I find it easier to share data from a PC on a Mac then between multiple users on the same Mac, which is why I typically keep my iPhoto/iTunes libraries on a PC.
- straube, on 10/12/2007, -23/+5Agreed. Just delete the program and save yourself the trouble.
- glasnostic, on 10/12/2007, -29/+5iPhoto is the worst product mac has ever come up with.
yet it's tipical of the mac "you never want to look at your directories" mentality.
