- smacman, on 11/16/2008, -7/+77I would love to use Firefox on the Mac. In fact I did use it for a quite some time after the 3.0 release. The reason I keep coming back to Safari is for stability and speed. Somehow Firefox seems to run slow and bogged down. 3.0 was a great improvement but it still can't touch Safari in terms of overall feel. Having said that, I look forward to the day when Firefox is better optimized for OSX.
- MtheoryX, on 11/16/2008, -9/+77Webkit FTW.
- benologist, on 11/16/2008, -10/+77Yup, it's just not possible.
Cause it'll re-appear next time iTunes updates. - WickEd101, on 11/16/2008, -11/+70Some users, particularly Windows users, need to understand that just because a major application comes bundled with an operating system and is made the default choice, doesn't mean it needs instant replacing. Safari is a great browser with lots of positive aspects and plenty more potential. It is NOT the IE of the Mac universe.
- osage, on 11/16/2008, -34/+82Ditch Safari? NEVER!
- hoshizakistar, on 11/16/2008, -1/+41This article isn't that great, IMO. The article's title "Time to Ditch Safari?" implies that they've found at least one browser that runs significantly better than Safari on the Mac OS, or heavily outweighs it in features, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Also, it seems like this article was written by someone who isn't really familiar with the Mac OS, but is familiar with all these browsers in general (perhaps just on Windows). The article compares and rates the features of the browsers but doesn't talk about speed and performance. The article tries to justify this by saying that this is no longer a factor when testing browsers, but I beg to differ. The reason I use Safari for the most part is because it runs quicker than other browsers on my Mac. It seems optimized for and tailored to the Mac operating system. I notice speed differences between differently browsers still.
What really bothered me about this article, though, was the fact that Safari got a 1/5 in the 'Blocking Content' section because "all browsers offer basic pop-up blocking and the ability to disable scripts, but that's where Safari stops". Safari 3.2 was just released and now alerts users of phishing and malware sites. At least when comparing browsers, use the most up-to-date versions of each one! - casemon, on 11/16/2008, -1/+21"Most Mac users tend to use the browser that came installed on their computer (Apple's Safari) just because it's there and it's made by Apple."
That's like saying most article summaries are purposefully written as inflammatory to incense viewers to click-throu... nevermind.
Let's instead take a real look at why "most Mac users tend to use" Safari,
- it is standards compliant.
- it loads FAST, faster than Firefox.
- UI doesn't try to recreate the desktop experience.
- Google integration (including drop down hints in the search box)
- Seamless with Dashboard.
- CMD-I to mail the current page images and all.
- Did I mention it was FAST?
I was an ardent Firefox user before switching, but now that I'm on the Mac, there is no better browser experience IMO. The only thing missing is keyword searches, but that can be resolved with little hack magic. - inferno10, on 11/16/2008, -3/+23Webkit + Safari AdBlock FTW
- Harrison88, on 11/16/2008, -8/+27Hurry up Google Chrome. We're waiting for you!
- directedition, on 11/16/2008, -9/+28I use safari on OSX because it's faster, more stable, and uses fewer resources than Firefox. I honest to God tried to stick with Firefox across my OSes (windows, linux, osx, and skyos) but safari was simply a better browser. Who knows, maybe a more recent firefox build works better.
For instance, scrolling through comments on digg was maybe 4fps on Firefox, and perfectly smooth on Safari. Firefox was also much more likely to have trouble locking up when a page has too many comments, etc etc. - ElBeh, on 11/16/2008, -0/+18Damn, you're gonna hate books.
- Don_Gero, on 11/16/2008, -0/+17The main reason I don't use Firefox over Safari is because I'm on a MacBook Pro, and Safari works properly with my trackpad. Firefox scrolls line by line, instead of smoothly like Safari. If you enable smooth scrolling in Firefox it just lags when you scroll. You also need extra software to make the three fingered gestures work outside of Safari.

you fox news bastard - inactive, on 11/16/2008, -1/+13really, four pages?
- DirtPile, on 11/16/2008, -9/+21The winner is still Firefox 3, it claims. I can't begin to count how many ways this article fails.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -0/+11They already learned, they learned how to increase ad hits.
- BRODEL, on 11/16/2008, -7/+18When I switched to Mac I tried safari for a while. I soon started looking for replacements though. Firefox 2.x (current at the time) was not that great on the mac. I used camino for a while, but when FF 3 came out, I switched to that and haven't looked back since. Safari has some nice features, but as a whole Firefox suits my needs much better.
Also, I haven't looked in a whole, but is there a decent ad blocker for Safari yet? I tried Safariblock at the time and it hardly blocked anything. - tobsterius, on 11/16/2008, -0/+11I like Safari... so no. If other people want to ditch it, fine by me.
- joshuabaker, on 11/16/2008, -0/+11What grinds my gears most is how Firefox/Mozilla renders text on OS X. It's plain awful in comparison with Safari/Web-kit.
- ericdano, on 11/16/2008, -3/+14TechRadar is the Huffington Post of Tech. It is terrible.
- benologist, on 11/16/2008, -1/+11Tech Radar writes for diggs and were just looking for an excuse to say Firefox is teh awesome.
There is a significant chance nobody at Tech Radar even used a Mac to write this article, or even previously. - Nirgaul, on 11/16/2008, -0/+10On a PC, Firefox seems optimal, but on a Mac, I'm sticking with Safari. I used the bleeding edge nightly builds of Firefox 3 for months, but its still not as nicely integrated as Safari.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -11/+20"For us, Firefox 3 gets the winner's prize. There are still things we absolutely hate about Firefox, most notably its ghastly visual design, which betrays its cross-platform roots, and its stoic ignorance of Mac conventions."
Um, conventions should be the same cross platform. Unless Mac has something against right clicking still.
And FF's visual design is far from ghastly. It's also completely customizable/skinnable. You don't like it, make or download your own
How did Firefox not get 5/5 for some of these things, like blocking. Adblock plus =10/5 - wastern, on 11/16/2008, -2/+11There are things about Firefox at work that I like, mainly the Ubiquity extension that I was going to use at home so I set Firefox to my default browser. After about a week I was back on Safari. This seems to be a pattern, no matter what I try I always end up back with Safari
There are just those few features that I'm just so used to I can't do without. Mainly inline dictionary search, resizing text fields, moving tabs around to new windows, webclip for Dashboard, and its speed.
I love Firefox on Windows and Linux, but for some reason Safari always trumps it for me on the Mac. It doesn't make sense and I know it... - noahcutter, on 11/16/2008, -2/+10WebKit's SquirrelFish Extreme is THE JavaScript engine. There is absolutely nothing better. It even bests Google's V8. Thats primarily why I use WebKit =] FF3 just too slow.

Not 'recently enough' for you? - timusca, on 11/16/2008, -1/+9Safari is awesome... you can throw benchmark tests around and whatnot, but in the end, the difference is miniscule. The biggest difference is plugins, and while Firefox wins out on top, Safari DOES have SafariBlock for ad blocking and the latest release does protect against phishing. Maybe I missed it, but did the article even mention Safari's Private Browsing?
This was really biased... - winstonc, on 11/16/2008, -1/+9Agreed. It's way faster than any other browser on Mac, though it's not as stable as Safari and Firefox. And it passes the Acid3 test, if anyone cares about that.
If Firefox wasn't so sluggish on the Mac, I wouldn't feel a need to use another browser... - speaker219, on 11/16/2008, -3/+10Great. Another multi-paged article. When will people learn?
- winstonc, on 11/16/2008, -1/+8It's a test to see how well a browser adheres to web standards.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid3 - caseyfern, on 11/16/2008, -1/+8This caught my eye:
But Firefox's sheer speed, ease of use and excellent feature-set ensures it's the fastest and most efficient way of browsing the internet
... and made me wonder why my Firefox 3 has on several occasions taken up to 5 minutes to launch, even after disabling the handful of add-ons I have. (G5, Leopard). Fast is not the term that has ever come to mind when I think of FIrefox. - neosublime, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Mac OS X:
SAFARI 4 Beta SMOKES Firefox 3.1 Beta. Not to mention built in web apps and more.
Windows:
Firefox 3.1
Linux:
Firefox 3.1 - TexasShiv, on 11/16/2008, -7/+14Firefox is complete ***** on a Mac
- Dermah, on 11/16/2008, -1/+7Inline dictionary is definitely the killer app for Safari
- prth8machine, on 11/16/2008, -0/+6Ever since I switched to Mac people have tried to get me to switch to Firefox. It's subtle, but it's not as good as it is on the PC. And I really like how Safari renders pages. They just look better (most of the time).
- jedisushi, on 11/16/2008, -1/+7This. End of conversation. :-) WebKit is the best browser [engine] for the Mac.
- autoy, on 11/16/2008, -2/+8Time to ditch 300 pixel wide, 5 page-split list articles that bring nothing new to the table?
- peestandingup, on 11/16/2008, -0/+6Well, I was a big Camino fan (still am actually), but over the last few months it's been failing me when accessing certain websites & being non-compatible. I've used it for years, but cant have that, so I ditched it & moved on to Safari.
Oh, and Firefox for Mac? Sorry, its a fine browser & all, but the Mac version is basically just a port over from the PC version. Meaning its not really "made for Mac", so it doesnt take advantage of OS X at all. No keychain manager, no system wide spell check, etc. Blah.
You know how you PC guys feel about Safari or iTunes for PC?? Yeah, thats Firefox for Mac. - Paranoidmarvin, on 11/16/2008, -6/+12Please Google, release Chrome for Mac soon!
- bparkey, on 11/16/2008, -0/+5I prefer Opera. It comes with all of the Firefox addons I like already built in. Possibly the only negative thing is not being able to get rid of the features I don't wan't such as the bittorrent and email.
- directedition, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5Don't have it any better off? Firefox completely pwns IE in all considerable areas. It's not at all the same.
- DMXell, on 11/16/2008, -1/+6How did Firefox win if it only beat Opera in like, two results? Firefox is downright sluggish on the Mac (Firefox 3 that is, version 2 was nice, but the new interface slows it down in OS X).
- directedition, on 11/16/2008, -4/+9Very true. Firefox needs to get in gear on the Mac. There's no reason for it to be so buggy and slow on such a popular OS.
- Visarga, on 11/16/2008, -0/+5Yes. True. You need to try it on a forum page like this one or reddit. It moves so slow I feel like I am using 8086, not G5.
