- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -30/+148The Apple ads definitely have shown time and again.
PCs are for work. Macs are for fun.
Why are you people not angry at Apple for that image? - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -18/+119Personally, I think you are twisting his words. I didn't get the feeling from reading it that he thinks Mac users aren't real people with real jobs. In other words, I don't think he meant what he said in a strickly literal way.
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -16/+100http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Znng7L8loqw
Look at the PC guy, he looks like a guy who works at the office.
Look at the Apple guy, he looks like he just came back from college. - Drealoth, on 10/12/2007, -9/+64I use a mac! I don't have a job!
- Hellman109, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40Because mac users all live in the forest and play with the animals while PC users live in a cage right?
Err... whatever. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+41PC= personal computer
I don't see how this is an argument. - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39I had a dream...
That PC and Mac users would one day live in harmony... - MadOtaku, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35DaffyDuck is right. He said nothing about mac users. He was saying that his review will determine if Macs are viable for "real people with real jobs." In other words, suitable for a typical person. Oh, and he never said if mac were or not. Just that his review WOULD say that when it came out.
btw I'm a "mac zealot" and proud of it. I just don't want to see a person falsely accused of hateful speech. - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31"Look at the PC guy, he looks like a guy who works at the office.
Look at the Apple guy, he looks like he just came back from college."
My point was obviously not clear enough, My intent was not to start a Mac vs PC debate. We can get that in every other thread. My goals was to point out that generalizing and stereotyping most Mac users as some slacker hippy type is just as retarded as Mac users pretending like they own the entire Art industry. Last time I checked Photoshop ran on both Windows and Macs and Last time I checked Microsoft Word ran on both Windows and Macs. If you had actually paid attention to that video Mac was trying to reassure PC that there is enough work for both of them. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28@ajck
Yes, they are actually PCs. Wow, you're not too bright, are you - rrweetone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"I took offense from this."
Who the hell do you think you are ? No one cares if you take offense to anything. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24It's ironic, but you're right; most of the graphic design industry is comprised of idiots with community college diplomas and Macs who think that makes what they do in some way valid. I do contract work and I collaborate with them daily. If you're good and you use a Mac, then you're allowed to condescend to everyone else, but only for the first reason.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32IQ70's right, only in a couple commercials have they emphasized that Macs run Office and what not as well. I don't think Scot meant any offense by it. Buried as inaccurate.
- Fluidity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Godamn, who really cares? Each can be used for work or fun, it depends how and what you use it for. You make your computer work for you, it won't turn you into a hard worked or hippy. Also, if you take offence to someone knocking your choice of Apple or windows, you need to get a life.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Lmao I love this. Apple fanboys getting all upset- we need this more often.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22You've just explained why Mac has never managed to take off. Everytime somebody criticises Mac OS a Macboy dies of heart failure. Lets test it:
-OSX is too white/bright
-1 button mice are stupid
-Beige is so the ultimate colour for computers, I mean imagine something stupid like white
and for the ultimate
-Ubuntu makes OSX look ugly, everything needs to be brown. Get with the times.
There most the Mac using population is now dead or on the brink of being committed. We thank you for your time. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23I conversely can't be nearly as productive doing web design on a Mac. It's what you're used to, at this point in the game neither is noticeably better for any particular application.
- Hellman109, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16And the home market, and the gaming market, and the market as a whole.
The Mac community holds the majority in zealot fanboys who only want people to agree, and everyone else is the devil, and also the blog "wank a day over a mac" community.
Whoah, Microsoft better make moves in those sectors ASAP! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14No kidding. I'm starting to hate these damn blogs. They make getting to actual content much more difficult. Search engines need to implement a feature that would attempt to recognise a blog and omit it from the results.
- Tarmas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Web design is not only doing graphics! For God's sake, it's also coding and scripting. Keep that in mind.
Macs are not an industry standard, trust me. As someone said previously, Photoshop is available for both Macs and PCs. You just use what you're more comfortable with, that's it. It's only a computer, after all, and not your girlfriend. It's just a ***** tool.
Disclaimer:
I am a Mac user. You can call me a fanboy, actually. I have used Macs for over 12 years, but I feel just as comfortable and productive when given a Linux or a Windows box. - IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18@ TheReport:
I dugg you up. I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was merely pointing out that the stereotype was actually started by Apple. The anger is basically misdirected. - TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I have a dream that my three little OSes will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their desktop but by the content of their kernel.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Do you even know what condescending means?
- Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14This annoys me, mac users (and apple) try and poke fun at windows all the time but when someone makes a comment that may put macs in a negative light all hell cuts loose.
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11People need to calm down. I was just making the stereotypical anti-mac sort of argument out of irony and you ironically responded in the stereotypical Mac user way.
I have nothing against Macs but people really need to relax a bit. I will assume for the sake of not perpetuating meaningless stereotypes that most Mac users who read my post saw if for what it was and didn't respond. - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"I couldn't imagine working with web design jobs on a PC."
... muhuh???
What is it? What webdesign tool for Mac isn't available on a PC? No, seriously. I do the same job on a Dell, and have for years. Is it dreamweaver? Flash? coldfusion? Maybe a webserver? Could it be Photoshop?
(I'm in-house, so my present environment is scite (cos, honestly, the bad rendering of DW is... distracting...) and Coldfusion dev server, with the Gimp for images, and testing on Firefox and about six versions of IE, with CoLinux over VNC for KHTML / Webkit testing) - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm a Windows user. I know Linux well and I'm comfortable without a GUI.
Here's what I personally see as the differences between the OS's:
Windows:
Pros: A lot of software available, easy to use, little compatibility problems, good for gaming.
Cons: A lot of security problems, OS can be very inefficient
Linux:
Pros: Free, works great as a server, also great if you want to run something on an old PC
Cons: Hard to use for beginners, so many distributions makes it confusing for some people
Mac:
Pros: Nice looking GUI, works great for audio/video editing and graphic design
Cons: Software support can be lacking in many areas, hardware expensive to buy (can't really build it yourself by buying wholesale parts cheap).
I have 2 PCs, one running XP Pro and one running text-only CentOS (my home VOIP server). My XP is running great, I can tweak it enough that it is very stable and I haven't had any problems with it. CentOS is a nice distro for running my Asterisk server. I'd like a Mac purely because I think it would be great for video editing, but it's a big investment for something that isn't critical for me personally.
This fanboy Mac vs Windows vs Linux thing is really getting annoying. Why are you wasting your own time with all this crap? Do you really think that some hardcore Windows user will be reading through the comments on Digg, see your Mac Fanboy rant and then immediately throw out his PC and buy a Mac? It's a sad situation when people treat their choice of computer system like a religion. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Gee an article with the word Mac in it makes front page.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14that *cough* .. *cough* thing never ceases to crack me up.
i see what you're doing there. - kamisama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12You mean as in, they are still dominating the business market?
- Yashu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Digg users aren't real people with real jobs.
hehe.
Yet, I am posting this from work. On a PC. I am a CAD/3D designer... and I can tell you that the mac has nothing but ***** for this type of work... unless you count the few OSS linux programs that also can be made to run on a mac.
Honestly, the only real way to make a mac viable for this type of work is to install boot camp and run windows... but then you still have to deal with ATI graphics and price premium.
Of course, the article poster didn't even get the quote right. - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Does student count as a job?
- notauser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I work for a company that has about 20 employees and we supply them with a laptop to work on the field. They are setup so they can send the information direct over IP so it prints at headquarters. The company employed a girl that refused to take a PC and basically forced the company to let her use her mac on the field. It's been 5 months and she hasn't been able to print a single report. As stubborn as she is. She would rather make the trip of coming to the office placing the reports on a memstick, going to a station and printing the reports. To me that is like working twice. But hey she does work with a mac in a real job and she is real people.
- swazo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I use Windows and I live in my parents basement working at a grocery store spending all of my money on drugs.
Thanks though Scott. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The guy getting his panties in a wad over the comment is just using typical female argument tactics (assuming the converse of the statement to be true). Speaks volumes about his own insecurities if you ask me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@TheReport
if you get pissed off on stuff like computer or OS then choose one of the following :-
1) You are either immature adult or a kid.
2) Obsessed
3) Dont have a life
4) Have high blood-pressure.
if you chose option 1) then you are at the right place to click as much you want to let out immature behaviour's expected reaction.
if you chose option 2) Then you need a Psychologist or better a Psychiatrist.
if you chose option 3) You will not find life inside Mac OSX.
if you chose option 4)Lower the Intake of salt and regularly get yourself checked for heart related disease and diabetes, but as there is no cure you will die sooner.
physical interaction through Internets is not yet possible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I don't think cool or hip people play 'Medevil 2 Total War'. that would be a nerd you are thinking of.

check out the 2nd sentance. - JustinPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why would you take offense at this at all? So one dude says that he doesn't necessarily like Macs, and you guys get all crazy? Take it easy, there are more important things than what computer you use, get out, smell a flower, kick a cat, whatever. Just stop going on these Apple-backed crusades, please.
- cbeach, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Yes, I wouldn't consider those things as fun to do on a PC..
Try them on a Mac. - diggimator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Apple's targetting the younger generations with their line of "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" ads.
They're thinking along the same lines what Dell is thinking and what the tobacco companies are thinking... Dude, you're getting a Mac! Get them hooked while they're young. The main reason the Mac market is so small in the first place is because consumers tend to get stuck with whatever OS they're using. Why not use this tendency to Apple's advantage? Get customers while they're young. The majority of the older generations probably can't cope with an OS switch anyway.
But of course, you're not supposed to make logical assumptions from ads. People use real Macs for real jobs as well. - Ronmilner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The problem I have with Mac's is the lack of support in the Enterprise.
1. You can't get a road map from Apple so you can make decisions on future purchases.
2. Their servers are over priced and totally suck.
3. They do not have a good Enterprise mass storage solution.
4. Linux is better supported in the Enterprise than Mac's. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You took offense? Let me guess, your job is you work at the Apple Store?
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I think OSX is fine for work its just you do not need to spend the Apple tax (which is shockingly bigger than the MS tax) or even have a reasonably high level of hardware to work. A dirt cheap box is usually more than enough.
The problem Apple has is that on the other end a top of the range commodity machine will outperform its machines. They have decent quality parts but never bleeding edge. So really they are in no man's land. It's a pity because OSX is better than XP (and Vista) it just needs to be released for commodity hardware and Apples marketshare would skyrocket. They could still sell their vertically integrated boxes, having OSX in the commodity doesn't mean they can't put together a complete solution with good drivers etc for the Apple fans. - s2djfinc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You mean Mac users aren't all metro-sexual, smug trust-fund kids with long hair wearing hoodies? Wow...guess you can't believe everything you see on TV...
- Ruffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Mac Fanboys arent real people. The minute you become a fanboy you forfiet your right to be called a human. We should round them up and launch them all into the sun. I'm tired of these damn debates
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7How exactly do Mac users have fun? Create videos or photo albums? Being a PC user myself, I wouldnt consider these as "fun" things to do with my PC.
- iamichi, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3@ajck "Similar chip but different architecture around that chip"
So you mean EFI? Wow, what does that give you? Intel northbridge, Intel southbridge, Intel CPU, standard DDR2 RAM, Nvidia or ATI graphics... Face it; it is literally a PC, which is why it runs Windows... What you like is the nice design and the OS, surely? And after years of putting up with "It's not my fault!" and managing your own (unprotected) memory I'm not surprised you are so touchy!
Mac fanboys are just like the hybrid drivers in South Park Smug Alert!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smug_Alert!
I really think you could apply that episode to them as well... -
