"RTFA moron" indeed. - node3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19You know, blas, there are more than 5 PC makers. Apple is doing better than Toshiba, Sony, IBM, etc., and yet no one says those companies are doing poorly.
Apple is doing very well, and is poised to do much better. Why does that bother you? - E_r_i_c, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19@tnwake
check out page 2, dude:
"Sales of the venerable product line rose even faster than that of the iPod during the quarter ended in September, climbing 37% to $2.21 billion. Taken together, Apple's laptops and desktop unit sales are growing more than four times faster than the global PC market as a whole and have Apple closing in on third place in the U.S. PC market." - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -16/+30Could it be possible Apple's sales are lower than they could be 'now' because people are waiting for Leopard, thus floating PC sales temporarily? Just a thought...
- inboxnews, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25Could it be possible that PC's aren't selling well 'now' as people wait for Vista, thus boosting Apple's position temporarily? Just a thought.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23@dkoon
Why does Apple have to be 4x bigger than all other PC manufacturers combined? What kind of f'd up metric is that? Nobody says, "tell me when Toyota is 4x bigger than the rest of the market".
Already, being the 4th largest PC maker is impressive. Beating the industry trend and heading towards #3 is even better.
Pick a random PC technology company you admire. Odds are, Apple is doing better than them.
Elegant design, superb OS and bundled apps, runs OS X and Windows natively, at the same time even, has the Walkman of the 21st century, excitement over new ventures (iPhone, iTV), unparalleled growth and *still* that's not enough... sheesh, there's no pleasing some people! - TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23you need to RTFA, how ironic.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"Apple is doing very well, and is poised to do much better. Why does that bother you?"
Because any news of Apple doing well is obviously fanboy propaganda. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Yes, I am sure that is a factor. It will be interesting to see what happens when Vista is released.
- pjleonhardt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I think the only non tech person I know, that cares, let alone has heard, about Vista coming out would be my Dad, and thats only because he's in charge of most of the technology where he works..
Seriously, they've botched this launch, and most people don't even know its coming out. - smhill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@broomett
"But which company would you rather be? Not just with overall numbers, but would you rather gain 100 new customers or 40?"
Or put another way, which company would you rather be, one that is growing or one that is loosing sales to its competitor?
Apple is extremely profitable. It is selling more products than it has before, it is making more money. Not a bad place to be really. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This illustrates why we should think twice before issuing personal insults.
As far as this info being a side note, if you are familiar with stock market related articles, they tend to cramp in a lot of different info about the company in one article. Apparently, they felt the iPod was more worthy to be at the top of the article. This is the real deal. If someone had copied that segment and put it onto a blog then we would have other people crying foul. It just goes to show, you can't please everybody. - IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Apple sales went from 4% a year to 6% a year. That is growth of 50%.
Dell sales went from 28% to 30% a year. That is a growth of 7%.
Although, Dell sold more computers than Apple, Apple would seem to be a faster growing company and hence a better stock investment.
Thats all this article says. So read into it as Apple is bigger than Dell or more Macs sell than PCs is not correct. - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I always wondered about apple fan boys, I recently ordered a Apple Laptop for my mother and I figured I'd get it setup for her. After playing with it for 5 minutes I was in love. I just ordered another one for my girlfriend for Christmas, being the local "computer guy" whenever there is a problem with their "windows", this seems like a logical move. The Apple OS is intuitive and easy to use. Not to mention I won't be getting calls about spyware/virus anytime soon. I am officially an Apple convert. ..Of course I'll be sticking with Linux, but for the computer "newbs" in your life an Apple seems like a good idea.
@bias
Personally, I think anything that gets people away from the MS tax is a good thing. Monopoly FTL, more open market FTW. - rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6broomett, is there a reason every single comment you've made so far contains a personal insult?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I am guilty of buying two mac books this month. One for my sister and one for my mother. I have just eliminated my 'support calls' by 75%.
This is from someone that used PCs (DOS/Windows/Linux) for over 20 years. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11dkoon, your comment made no sense at all. The article is about the rate of sales, not the size of the market.
- iOsiris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Its because the global PC market is already saturated
- tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11"As far as this info being a side note, if you are familiar with stock market related articles, they tend to cramp in a lot of different info about the company in one article. But there was in fact an overall theme in that article and it wasn't how Apple is selling vs. other PC's. A non-biased poster would have made the title... well.. the same as the title of the article: "Apple bulls begin to look beyond the iPod" or "Analysis: Steve Jobs will need more than a phone to sustain growth". Neither of those mention anything that's in the title or description of this digg article.
That was my point, even though I crammed my foot in my mouth while making it. - pjleonhardt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5more like the 1st.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Umm, yeah. Except that Macs do run windows these days..."
I think you mean Macs CAN run Windows. - rsdouglas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Berkana: "dkoon, your comment made no sense at all. The article is about the rate of sales, not the size of the market."
Actually, dkoon's comment makes perfect sense. From the description: "Apple's Macintosh unit sales are growing more than four times faster than the global PC market['s unit sales]"
That means the number of Mac sales is growing 4x faster than the number of PC sales is growing. In other words the title of this submission is totally inaccurate. Macs are not outselling PCs 4 to 1.
That said, the sudden increase in growth is very impressive, and shows just how much the ipod has raised Apple's brand appeal. - jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Umm, yeah. Except that Macs do run windows these days...
- horanghee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That seems like an expensive way to reduce support calls. Maybe you should have started speaking with a thick accent to help them transition to Dell support?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Another misleading title by CLIFFosakaJAPAN... another flamebait. More flamewars caused by him. More fanboy fights.
When will this tard be banned from Digg, for Christ's sake? - cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@broomett
I'd rather be the company pulling in more profit from PC sales, irregardless of number. Got a comparative breakdown of that? You might be surprised. - Poco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Given the number of computer manufacturers out there, being fourth (a.k.a. almost third) is a significant number. It is even more significant when you think about the fact that they are not compatible with all the other systems.
That would be like someone selling a video player that only played a proprietary format of disc and being fourth in sales when compared with all DVD player manufacturers. That would be something like the PS3 being the fourth highest selling video player on the market. If that ever happened it would be huge news and posted on Digg every day. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow... nobody answered to you, broomet. You've touched THE wound!
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dumbass iFanboy. Your title is completely inaccurate. Closing in on 3rd? LMFAO !!!! Try 4% of the US market. MORON.
- cbeach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good news, but a misleadingly titled article - should read "Mac sales GROWTH 4x faster.."
Please keep titles real otherwise it devalues digg.com and discredits otherwise good stories. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I nominate your mommy the hawt of the day.
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find DIGG an amusing site where people make up their own titles for news articles you can read on your own from other reputable sites. I refer to this as the "Diggiality" version of reality. Remember this...Digg should be used for entertainment purposes only.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Considering leopard is way cheaper than Vista perhaps not. There's reports flying around all over the place that intel mac takeup will increase when adobe release the latest photoshop though
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Why do I hear Disco Stu saying "Did you know that Disco record sales were up 400% from the year 1976 to 1977? If these trends continue...Ayyyy!"
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The title is misleading, but the fact remains that Macs are increasing marketshare 4x faster than global PC figures.
"Gartner has already said Apple is losing market share along with Linux after Vista ships."
I'm skeptical that Gartner can tell the future. When Vista ships, Mac users can run that if they want to. I've used Vista RC2 on my MacBook Pro, and although it's a solid improvement over Windows XP (not saying much) it can't touch Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) in terms of overall usability and aethestics. Don't forget about Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) coming out early next year too - just as Vista buzz settles, Leopard will get everyone talking about Mac OS X again. - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Apple started from having the MAJORITY They had a head start."
This is a good point. I started learning computers on an Apple II. All the schools in my town bought them. When I was in high school we were beginning to get Macs. So, what happened? Apple had the name recognition and the superior product. How did they get into a position to have their asses handed to them by an inferior product? - plgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ tnwake - don't you know that digg isn't about reading the articles... its about writing quick summaries and posting useless comments that people digg or bury based on how popular sounding that the comment is.
- Wyek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the profit made by apple is more then 20%... if you look at the same piece (exact same) Apple store vs your local PC store, it's look like 40 to 100% profit to me... Yes it's in a clean looking enclosure but what... i was thinking that performance matter... DIY an Intel core 2 PC, same configs. as a Mac, pay 40% less and install i pirated version of Mac OS X. Yes i encourage it... let's see what apple can do about security, except of criticizing every other company...
http://digg.com/apple/Jobs_Says_Pirates_Will_Burn_in_Hell_ - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8It's called an industry halo effect and Apple isn't alone. Acer and other companies are outselling Apple and a lot of PC manufacturers (See: halo effect) are increasing too.
http://news.com.com/Measuring+the+iPod+effect/2100-1041_3-6138711.html - cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He's a dick?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Seriously, they've botched this launch, and most people don't even know its coming out."
Really? XP was only really known about by the general public a few weeks before launch when they started a huge ad campaign from what I can recall. - delyea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds a lot like this is a "When you're on top of the mountain... the only place to go is down" situation.
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I can personally attest that we are waiting to build 3x Quad Core Vista Machines till after direct x 10 is out, the 2nd wave of direct x 10 video and physics cards, and the second wave of quad core. Once the dust settles we'll be investing nearly $10,000+ in 3 gaming machines for competition. Keeping all this last run gear for office equipment.
Lots of gamers are holding out on direct x 10 - and vista to be ready for gaming. You can open any PC magazine and read this. - DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Another inaccurate title. PC sales are comprised of hundreds of different vendors which leaves Mac in the dust as a whole. Gartner has already said Apple is losing market share along with Linux after Vista ships. Apple has 2% worldwide market share so they can`t fall very far. This title sounds like an atempt to avoid the itunes store collapse going on.
When it comes to Mac , remember this...
RDF(Reality Distortion Field) is the idea that Steve Jobs is able to convince people to believe almost anything with a skillful mix of charm, charisma, slight exaggeration, and clever marketing. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Apple was at 2% before - so already your comment is wrong right off the bat. It's grown to 4% and is seemingly increasing from there.
If you don't like how Digg is going, why not just block all Apple users? They you can live in your own little cocoon, immune from any news that you find disturbing. - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Glad to see some competition finally. Though i think thier marketing could have been even better if they showed off apple's strengths rather than compare them to a windows machine. Well, have 2 dudes pretend to be computers and one is nerdy while the other his hip. Personally i don't know anything much about the operating system, and it would be nice if they showed it off, showed off what it can do. made it creative, eye catching and all that jive. Whatever, it worked, i wonder how much money they dropped on that campaign. Wonder if they've broken even on thier computer sales.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I remember Digg in 2005 and before.
Look apple fanboys you are killing it for rest of us, you ppl have completely ruined Digg's quality.
Why not just leave us poor PC ppl, i mean how about www.digg-apple-statistics.com . Please leave us to our misery of using poor cheap low quality PC which we love to use and some of us here like Linux and many like Windows too.
Just leave us in the misery of PCs.
I beg you please at least stop posting statistic again and again and again.
Or accept the FACT that apple always had and always will be at ~4% of global comuter market share. - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2lol, trends like this are funny, I've seen one that assuming a hyperbolic trend razors will hit an asymtote in the number of blades in the next decade or so, leaving almost an infinite number of blades before long. My dad also make a graph of his weight loss once, accoding to the trend, he should no longer exist...
