- kyc050564, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I use Psst on my intel mac.
http://www.mistatree.org/Freeware/Psst/ - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Thanks kyc! It is REALLY annoying when I turn my computer on when everyone is sleeping!
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This is not about the Windows startup sound or the Windows log on sound, but the *hardware* startup sound. On most PCs, it's 'Beeeep'. On Macs, it's 'Laaaaa'.

Nobody cares. - Pronoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They have a Beta that works with intel Macs:
http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/BETA/index.en.html
"What's new in StartupSound.prefPane 1.1
1. StartupSound.prefPane 1.1 has supported an Intel-based Mac. On Intel-based Mac, you can adjust the volume of startup sound more finely.
2. When you are logged in as a non-administrator user, you can use "Startup Sound" preference by clicking the lock icon and entering the name and password of an administrator. (It does not work with this BETA version.)" - LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Never experienced those, so can't verify that I'm afraid. This is my fifth Apple notebook by the way
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dude what are you talking about "keeping the lid open drains your battery big time as osx is buggy with shutting off your comp without the lid down". If the computer is shut down, its shut down, even with the lid open.
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Or using the sound preferences...
- mmmark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not necessary. Just hold down the mute key on the keyboard before you hit the power-on button, and don't let it go until the computer has booted up.

>>the issues I spoke of are listed as number 46 and 72 on the list of problems
I never claimed to be the brightest guy around, but doesn't that list only go up to 27?
/looks around for Allen Funt - benjaminrayburn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This needs to come from apple.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7what bothers me is the pulsing white light during sleep mode. i wish i knew how to turn that off
- FearlessFreep, on 10/22/2007, -2/+8Who turns off their Mac in the first place? I think I've heard the startup sound...maybe three times
- Brennan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Nice to see you've been using osx long enough to make it through 3 whole os updates! You must definitely know what you're talking about.
- erictheninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@astrosmash
Nice singing. - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you NEED to USE SMCFANCONTROL you have a broken MacBook Pro, send it back to Apple and they will replace the motherboard. It's just that simple. They send you an overnight DHL box, and you get your fixed machine back in 3-4 days.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5On my second Macbook and I've never had trouble with that on either one. Have a link to the issue you're talking about?
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4On any mac including all my Intel Macs simply turn down the Volume (aka hit the mute key) when you restart, OR if you don't want to do that just holdl down the MUTE key (F3) during startup and no chime will be played, and your volume will be right where you left it when the OS boots.
Geeze, it's an Apple support article, how this made it as news I don't know. - LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Actually there is a good reason for the chime: It is a very basic diagnostic. Powerbook not working? Switch it on. Does it chime? Yes? Then the display's bust. Does it chime? No? Motherboard's bust. It allows a very basic, rapid diagnosis, and it IS useful in this respect. You just won't appreciate that until something goes wrong ;-)
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think its more of an "everything is ok" sound, but I would not call it a diag sound.
- Ashan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Too bad it only works with PPC macs.
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been doing this for years - I'm as surprised as you are about this junk.
Why download a utility when you can just hit a key? - m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -2/+6@virtualball
why are you shutting your Mac down? Put it to sleep and walk away. - M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You could edit the plist in the apps to hide them from the Dock
..You still use stickies? - LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Disconnect it from the motherboard ;-) It's really easy to do, just pull the connector up from the power board. Or do what I did and replace it with a blue one!
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My iMac G4 used the external speakers on the startup sound.. I was actually kind of relieved when the Core 2 Duo I just upgraded to used the internal speakers. When the volume was turned up too high you could hear it throughout the house -.-
- aircows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you need to reset your PRAM or OF, the start up sound helps you know at what point in the cycle you are at. I think for resetting the PRAM you hold down Command + Option + P + R and wait to hear the start up sound 3 or 5 times (I forget which).
With the Macbook, volume settings for headphone and system speakers are held separately, and since I almost exclusively use headphones on my Macbook, my system speakers are always muted and my restarts are silent. - kolywater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3smcfancontrol - return your macbook and get it fixed.
psst - use the beta version of the startup sound pref pane. (hint: this digg article has a link to it)
safari enhancer - there are dozens of high quality plugins that dont run as an independent app (safariblock, saft, inquisitor, etc). do some homework at pimpmysafari.com
stickies - its an app, and running apps show in the dock... get over it? - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You are not FORCED to leave it open when you are converting video files on a MacBook Pro or any notebook computer from Apple, very simple, just plug in a USB device or leave one plugged in, or external display and close the lid, The mac notebooks were designed to be run closed, I do it all the time.
A simple visit to http://apple.com/support and search for "close lid while running" will bring up ten knowledge-base articles on this, with step by step instructions. Not only that the little 4x4 inch square manual that comes with your laptop tells you this on the 4th page with a detailed illustration of EXACTLY how it works.
I let flash video encoding work all night encoding videos with my machine closed.
I hope it's helpful for you, enjoy the holidays - BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks kyc. I guess it doesn't work on my macbook though :(
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People just don't research things these days... Everybody jumps on digg and posts about features they didn't read about as if they don't exist... Sheesh.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've always liked the various Mac startup chimes. But I have a related problem:
How do I disable the loud 'Beeep' sound that my PC makes at startup? - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That bothers you? What the hell?
All computers use a LED to show that they're sleeping. If you don't like it, put a piece of tape over it or something. - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ SilentSpyder
The Mac startup sound is not muted when headphones are inserted. - Twango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fantastic. I had to wipe and reinstall the System recently. I had forgot about the startup sound. It was the FIRST piece of 3rd-party I re-installed.
BONG!
wouldn't be so bad if I could replace it with a *pleasant* sound. - LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funnily enough, you used to be able to do that, I remember my 300mhz beige G3 always belted out the chime in full 500watt surround sound
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why hit a key when you can get a utility to do it?
- GregoryHarbin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2here you go:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10564 - dbug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like Apple could learn a thing or two from Microsoft after all.
- Lifeprong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to know how to change the startup sound.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The headphones thing doesn't work on my G5 imac - so this will be useful
- disti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Photoblog:
I'm wondering if you have ever even used a mac, because obviously you don't know anything you're talking about. Just quit being an ass. =D - coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ BRODEL
Why would you want to do that?
Its never a good idea to move ANY computer while the harddisk is still spinning.
You are much better advised to put the computer to sleep before moving it.
It only takes my Intel iMac a second to wake-up from sleep. - disti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need stickies to run os x properly? Mine runs actually very well without those..
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my start up tone hasnt worked since my lower ram slot burned out on my powerbook....
- nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That sound is annoying. I forget about it sometimes and it catches me off guard. it also is annoying to other people if you are in public. I was in a coffee shop one day and I turned my laptop on. people were looking around trying to figure out what that sound was.
- BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@GregoryHarbin
Thanks. Sleepless never worked for me. I tried it in the past but I tried the version you linked me to (a bit newer than when I had tried before), but got the same result. Insomnia worked for me, but it was a pain to start it up and turn it on every time. I want something like this app for the start up sound you set it and never bother with it again unless you want to turn it off.
@Inkhead
I've read that before too. I don't want to have to carry around a USB drive or something with me just to get my macbook to not sleep though. Just an annoyance I'll have to live with for now carrying my macbook around the house open while my girlfriend can close her dell and take it where ever without it going to sleep... I tell her I can do that too! ... In bootcamp with XP :(
Thanks for the suggestions though! - Pezza131214, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now if only we were able to play the start up sound on external speakers, and not the internal.
I have a 475 Watt speaker system attached to my Mini and yet I am forced to hear the start up sound on the stupid internal speaker. - nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dear god. my problems are solved.
works on macbook black, hold the mute -- thanks so much!
#1 annoyance, fixed! - gumigecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just use Psst! That sound has been annoying me my whole life!
