- Ransomowris, on 10/12/2007, -90/+454I really hate to say it, and I know I'll be dugg down for it, and I'd digg myself down for saying it, as I'm a major Apple fan, but...
Sounds a lot like Vista. - FearlessFreep, on 11/07/2007, -59/+333Not quite like VIsta.
Leopard will be delated a few months because they moved resources.
Vista was delayed a few years for God only knows what reasons - veracon, on 10/12/2007, -47/+270Mac users officially now have just a bit less right to bash Microsoft for delaying Vista.
On a more serious note, I think this is terrible PR for Apple. I know I was hoping to buy a MacBook, but was looking forward to having Leopard shipped. That's not possible now, since I need it before August.
Bah! - hode, on 10/12/2007, -7/+126On voice activation:
A few years ago in the college dorm, a friend down the hall was trying to control his mac with his voice. Most of you on this thread know, but to control it, you say the name of the machine and then what you want it to do. For example, "Computer. Open iTunes."
Well, voice activation sucks and makes you scream at the computer and repeat yourself louder, and angrier. To make matters worse, my friend named his machine "bitch..." The RA ran down the hall thinking the guy was beating his girlfriend: "Bitch! Get my mail... Bitch! GET-MY-MAIL!" - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -19/+121Sorry for coment abuse, but this is the statement from apple
"Apple Statement
iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]" - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -20/+112"Sounds a lot like Vista."
MS *wishes* Longhorn had only slipped four months.
-jcr - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -11/+86What the hell are you talking about?
- fashiontrot, on 10/12/2007, -31/+105:/
Digg this comment if you could care less about the iPhone, but were really hoping for Leopard.
Other way around, digg down. - knelto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75Does anyone else remember Steve demoing the "Notes" feature of Mail at WWDC 06 and typing "Make sure Leopard gets done on time"?
- yourhead, on 10/12/2007, -11/+82What a drag
- lolgamoff, on 10/12/2007, -10/+78Well, I wouldn't say that Apple is pulling a Vista until they come out with Leopard Den Basic, Den Premium, Savannah Enterprise, and Big-Ass Cat editions.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+72*****!
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+52Probably the fact that he'll have to shell out another $120 for the upgrade to Leopard.
- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -12/+52A major win for VIsta how? Leopard being delayed doesn't mean Tiger automatically sucks now.
Seirously, from what I've seen Vista hasn't even caught up to Tiger yet (and this coming from a PC user.) I've used Tiger (at work, minimally I admit) and Vista, and Vista just has issues. Period. For MS to spend 5+ years on Vista and come out with something as rough around the edges as they have is simply appalling. I've been toying with buying a Mac and jumping off the MS ship and Leopard's delay really hasn't changed that. I honestly think Tiger is still a superior OS to Vista. It's definitely light-years ahead of XP. My dilemma is whether or not I can adequately do my work on a Mac (without relying too heavily on my PC or Boot Camp.) For me, it's just a matter of whether I can get my work done or not. As far as the OS race, Tiger is clearly ahead. Leopard is irrelevant to people considering a switch, I think. - drewskiMD, on 10/12/2007, -20/+54Guess that Leopard anticipation dip in Mac sales reported earlier is just going to be a steady decline until the fall. Sounds like they're burning the consumers who bought Macs by taking that revenue and pouring it into the iPhone.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -25/+53"Not quite like VIsta.

People seem to forget that leopard was originally scheduled for a fall 06 launch. Then it got bumped to spring 07 and now it's fall 07. So it's certainly more than a few months. It's delayed now a full year. And who knows if it will be delayed again. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -11/+39The bright side of this delay is that Apple can have a media blitz for X-Mas 07 now. Personally I don't mind the wait. I use OSX as my primary OS and I want 10.5 to be as stable and secure as possible. I don't want to suffer with buggy code just so Apple can meet an artificial deadline.
- Subiklim, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45Comparing it to Vista? LOL. Do you have any IDEA how long Vista was delayed? Many, many YEARS, not a few months.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -17/+43Dare I ask what is so horribly wrong with Tiger that would prevent you from making a hardware purchase now?
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28They'll be showing off the iPhone. And mocking us because we wont be allowed to build anything on it.
- Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32It seems logical to me for Apple to have postponed OS X and focused on the iPhone. They already have a version of OS X out that is serving customers exceptionally well. They don't, however, have a phone out. Therefore, they focus on opening the new market and ask the existing market to wait for 4 months.
I'm good with that. - macinjosh, on 10/12/2007, -22/+45At least its only delayed 4 months instead 4+ years like Vista. But I have to say its a bummer. I think it goes to show Apple is willing to make PR sacrifices in order to ship quality products.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -20/+42Well I still believe this is all about money. Apple stands to make much more of a premium on iPhone sales than Leopard sales, which essentially screws over Apple's real fans that are loyal to their core hardware in favor of the stock holders.
I mean they never delayed anything in favor of new iPods, they just come out when they come out. - n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Agreed. I really hope they offer free upgrade coupons for when it comes out (As a Mac user I begrudgingly say like Microsoft did with Vista). Otherwise I'm not buying a new computer until October. And I think I can safely say that this means there will be touch screen technology in Leopard.
- dannotdan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I have no interest in the iPhone, even if they gave a steep discount. On the other hand, I will upgrade to Leopard within a month of its release. So Apple just saved me some money for a few months. I should be happy. Now please excuse me while I have a good cry.
- jads, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30@claughery
Perhaps you didn't see the article on Engadget front paged on Digg about the crusade against the caps lock key? - jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25I think everyone previous is missing something. Vista was delayed because Microsoft couldn't get it's ***** together. I wasn't because the Xbox division needed help launching the 360 or the Zune team needed help writing the Zune software. Apple is making a silent statement: the iPhone is more important than OS X. Otherwise, they wouldn't shift resources like this. I'm more ticked about that implied statement than I am about them delaying OS X.
- hode, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23A musical number. Jazz hands. Possibly a magic show.
- UO07, on 10/12/2007, -16/+35crackheads can afford internet these days? :/
- Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29@davidrools
Huh? $500.00 for a top of the line Windows OS is excessive. A little over $100.00 for OS X is not. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+306 years late? What?
You expected Vista to be released straight after XP? - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Leopard was originally scheduled to come out fall of 2006. They changed that at last years WWDC to spring 2007. People seem to forget that.
So fall of 07 makes it a full 1 year delay. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24I like how the amount of time it took to create Vista keeps increasing every time someone wants to bash it.
Now you guys are saying it was delayed 5 years? So, according to you geniuses, Vista was slated to be released less than 1 month after Windows XP was released? - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Vista was delayed 4 years? Wierd, I never knew Vista was supposed to come out 13 months after XP./sarcasm
- Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20As soon as they dropped "Computers" from their name I knew stuff like this would happen. The Mac is being put on the back burner to work on a "gadget". A sad day Mac users that couldn't give a rats ass about the iPhone.
- CthulhuDawn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24@veracon
No, Mac users (and everyone else) still has the right to criticize Microsoft for a late Vista. The same should just be said for Apple as well. Damn you iPhone... :( - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16So they started making Vista in '96, more than a year and a half before Windows 98 shipped?
- bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Your optimism is charming, but your favorite PC manufacturer just put you on hold to develop a phone. Pun intended.
- peestandingup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I just LOVE how all the fanboys are digging every negative comment down.
Guys, im on your side, I LOVE Apple. But you gotta admit, this is straight up *****. Not because of a delay, that can happen. But, the REASONS for the delay. And with Apple's apparent shift towards consumer products, this just emphasizes that they are slacking on their computer products. - leomyhero, on 10/12/2007, -16/+28I don't think it even comes close to the Vista delay, but it still sucks when a deadline is missed. At least we have the iPhone in June. Looks like Apple might want to ramp up their proposed new campus in Cupertino to branch off the iPhone developers.
Thanks for digging me down :) - rcw3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Unfreaking believable. First, before I get called a Mac hater.... I have four Macs. I have helped get Macs into our enterprise. So the first fanboy who accusses me of being a hater, go take a flying leap.
How can you justify the delay of an operating system on a freaking phone? Where are the priorities? How do I justify buying 100 Xserves when the OS that we've been waiting years for was delayed by a freaking phone? I would have been fine if they just came out said it was taking longer than they thought it would be... but to say that a phone is draining resources from completing an OS?
This is a company with 17,787 full-time employees. How anyone can flippantly justify this as being a good thing is mind-boggling.
They were really right when they removed "Computer" from the name of the company.
Apple Faithful - 1. - elifab, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16It's less about the waiting to buy it for hardware concerns as it is that people don't want to have to throw down 130 extra dollars. This is especially bad for college students like myself who were planning on getting a new system over the summer, because 2 months later when I want the newest features I have to pay more for something that they had been claiming would be out by then.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11THis is a 1 year delay. Leopard, when first announced, was set for a fall 06 release. However at WWDC 2006 it was said it would be a spring 07 release with no mention of the previous release announcement. Apple has done their best to cover that up.
- drewskiMD, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16you really think they moved the resources yesterday? They saw this coming months ago, not to mention everyone has been saying the latest Leopard builds haven't been on track for a June release for a while now.
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Hey!
1. I get more use out of Tiger
2. Leopard needed more worthy features anyways
3. iPhone? not a chance
Sorry for people who wanted to snap up a new 'book. - jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20This is a drag for sure. But just look at all the problems with vista, as a mac user I don't want to wind up in the same boat as windows users. On the upside now is the time to pick up some Apple stock before the iphone comes out, as it is likely to go down.
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Actually, you're right. Crap... that means no Textmate 2.0 till October or later.
- robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I don't think I've ever been this dissapointed in Apple. And I mean that. This changes so much... just a week or two ago they said it was still on for Spring. October? That's just ridiculous.
For the first time Apple, I'm dissapointed in you. - hode, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19What was promised for 10.5? A widget maker? Swell...
- Lou3000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Apple Fanboy calling out Apple Fanboys.
Why is it that we all were laughing and jeering at missed Vista deadlines, but when Leopard is delayed, every comment seems to be, "I'm so glad they delayed it, I'm very happy about this." Yeah, it will mean more time spent in testing and development, but it is still another delay for an OS some thought would be out 6+ months ago. -
