Mac OS X Leopard 9A527 Gallery
macrumors.com — ThinkSecret has posted a gallery of the latest Mac OS X Leopard Build.Build 9A527, distributed last week to developers, represents a substantial improvement over the previous build, 9A499. On the whole, the build performs faster and has far fewer bugs than before. They write that the new build has ...

- sg7791, on 10/10/2007, -9/+0I think it always has, the Tiger icons are just too small to read.
Also, I don't think this writing applies to the modern mac market. So sad.- mikev, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1read apples hig for icons >_>

i bet its super obvious ;_;
http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/source/finder019.html- TehDoctor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It's a kind of hands-free magnifying glass. Kinda like the ones jewelers use.

- hellmit, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0Eeek. I'm just waiting til i install all my apps and when i go to the coverflow style finder half of the apps icons look like *****
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -12/+1I'm glad to see that the menu bar is less transparent than it was in earlier builds. I like the transparency, but I like it much more subtle.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I'm glad to see that the menu bar is less transparent than it was in earlier builds. I like the transparency, but I like it much more subtle.
- streetstealth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2It looks amazing, but I'm not liking the RAM and diskspace implications (though I imagine they'll at least be progressively loaded).
How often are you going to view an icon at 1024x1024 anyway?- DOGPARTY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1512x512 actually....
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9The icons look great -except for that awful home folder. Those icons are rotten and the more polished the rest of Leopard gets, the more they seem to stick out. I seriously hope that they're placeholders.

- Prod_Deity, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I agree, these new folder icons are quite a step back in terms of looks.
- techweenie1, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5indeed

- nodlezfodlez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I do so frightfully concur.
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5quite so
- rpgmaker, on 10/10/2007, -7/+6I think that the entire look of Leopard is a step back in terms of look compared to the Aqua look of Tiger. Digg me down but deep down you know is true.
- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well, I'm going to agree with you.
- the_snitch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Personally, I really like the pinstripes, and I will be sad they will be gone. It was one of the things that stuck out as attractive and very 'mac like' when I first saw OS X around 2002.
They seem to make boring grey windows just that little bit more interesting, without them you may as well be looking at windows 98.
I also hope they sort out the iLife scrollbar situation - Its not that I don't like the platinum scrollbars in iLife/iTunes, I just don't like it how the rest of the system doesn't use them as well. Just choose one, and stick with it! A major feature of Leopard is the single unified window theme, yet now the amount of custom widget (buttons, scrollbars, drop-down list) styles seems to be exponentially expanding.
- techweenie1, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5indeed
- eleven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4They're actually pretty nice - and work much better than the standard aqua icons in anything but icon view. Who uses icon view anyways?
- astrosmash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The folder icons have grown on me. They're retro:

- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8Wow i really hope those traffic light buttons (I forgot what they're actually called) aren't the final version. I much prefer the ones from Tiger.
- FunkyJunk, on 10/10/2007, -11/+9I don't really like the direction Apple is going in by making everything darker.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Black is the new black -- get with the times! ;)
- civdis24, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I agree. Like the new default desktop... sucks. Too dark. I like apple for its colorfulness and cheer.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That's no big deal. It only takes a few clicks to change it. :)
- nodlezfodlez, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0well i say ***** colorfulness and cheer, I'm amazed by the space picture (I might even keep it as my desktop for more than 30 seconds when I use leopard)
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Emperor Steve Jobs: Can you turn your son over to the dark side Lord Parrot?
Darth Parrot: He will join us or die - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Especially the dark gray title bars: it's fine for apps like Finder or Safari, but for apps that have toolbars (with black text), it's hard to read. They need to make it lighter. My preference would be like the Finder in this image: http://jonas.seph.ws/stuff/drf_p.png
- awhiteflame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I couldn't agree with you more.
- tidal, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Couldn't you have just post the link directly to thinksecret?
Yes I know someone posted it in the comments but the OP should have. - cornswalled, on 10/10/2007, -30/+3Oh, Apple finished taking screen shots of Windows Vista?
And to all the fangirls whining that Microsoft "stole" from Apple, I ask this: Why was Vista first to market with the "Stolen" interface even after five years of delays when Apple has come out with, what, a half dozen point releases for OS X???- adc89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21This looks nothing like vista.
- wozley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Be the bigger fanboy, and ignore the guy above! You can do it! For the love of all that is holy, /flame PLZ!
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Don't feed the trolls.
- monospaced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You do realize it took Microsoft over 7 years to produce Vista, which is a direct ripoff of Apple's Aqua, don't you?
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3I don't think either one is a "direct ripoff" of the other. Both are quite different from each other, with a few similar features here & there. Let's not forget Apple is JUST getting around to "Time Machine", a feature that's been in Windows since 'ME', and was well refined for Vista.
- kiwifish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Really? Are you talking about "System Restore"? Because that's pretty much nothing like "Time Machine"! The closest thing in windows, I believe, is "Volume Shadow Copy", which only got put in a non-server OS in XP I think. And how many normal people do you know who use it?
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1Right click -> Properties -> Previous Versions. Shows all previous versions of the selected file or folder at various points in time in a big list.
Maybe you're being confused because of the right click? I mean, I know Apple users have issues there...It's ok.... - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It was added in Server 2003: Vista is the first consumer OS to include the feature. Frankly, I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't publicized that feature.
@MioTheGreat
_We_ know how to access it, but the point is, people don't use it.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1Right click -> Properties -> Previous Versions. Shows all previous versions of the selected file or folder at various points in time in a big list.

- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Any chance diggers could find something other to argue about than which OS is better? I give obvious Apple trolls a hard time but I never bother slamming Microsoft for any real or imagined problems or issues. Why? Because neither I nor most of the rest of the world care.
- jonvdveen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4Why did you link to a link?
Thanks anyways. - Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Does anyone else remember back when OS X was first unveiled, one of the Apple slogans was 'no more grey'. Aqua was gorgeous. Now look what we have - back to grey.
Humph.- Prod_Deity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6That's one of the things that drove me to OS X (pre-Panther), the fresh aqua interface. Granted it was buggy as hell, but damn did it look nice compared to Windows
- jonvdveen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13No I don't. Then again, I was young, ignorant, and (sadly) a Windows user. However, the kind of shift that you mention is not really all that surprising. The 60's, for example, were quite colorful and bright. The 70's were more subdued. The 90's were pretty crazy with color! Apple has poked at "beige" boxes, but gone are the days of the multi-colored iMacs and Mac towers. Instead, we have three "color" options: black and white and grey. Times change. So do colors. While I hope they retain some color and bright accents in their UI, it's inevitable that what was once hated will soon be cherished. Bell bottoms anyone?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only thing that might drive me to Windows would be new Intel iMacs using the old flower power or bubbles color schemes or the return of the toilet seat iBooks...shiver...
- streetstealth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't mind the gray so much as I mind the fact that making the titlebars darker *decreases contrast* making them slightly less readable.
I have this fear that the designers at Apple are being overrun by Photoshop jockeys, replacing things that work with things that only look cool...- Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To be honest, I think that they just gratuitously change things between releases to give them a different look. Menu bars will be lighter in the release after Leopard, and we'll probably have Aqua pin-stripes back - anything to ring the changes.
Personally Panther remains my favourite iteration in terms of look and feel.

- DOGPARTY, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah I really love the appearance and desktop ones

[TheSkinsFactory comment points to an interesting area of debate].
The initial post was not particularly distinctive. A lot had been left to our imagination by that comment. Even though rumors are not our particular course of gathering technical news and data, we believe in direction the Mac developers have pursued indicates much hope for Apple Computer, Inc. - johnsondaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I for one love the fact that gray is becoming the standard. I think it makes the system look more professional and just all around cleaner. I never got into the pin striping of earlier builds, but I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
- DCstewieG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2How about that time machine background? It may look cool now (I disagree) but that's one of those things that you'll look back in 10 years and ask, what were they thinking?
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's unreleased...you might be able to change it.

- jonvdveen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Everyone please stop trying to look at this page so that I can load the images! ;-) JK! Too bad the original gallery wasn't linked; perhaps duggmirror would have caught something.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2I can't believe people are looking forward to this. It looks ugly as sin and boasts no innovative features.
- Adrianc333, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4Oh man! The Mac OS X Leopard 9A526 screenshots were so cool! I can't wait to see the Mac OS X Leopard 9A527 ones!
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+39A526 was not seeded to Mac developers, it was internal to Apple only.
- topherbook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That set of pictures was great, but that gallery they were in was TERRIBLE. The least they could have done is put a border around the images to set some of the grey dialog boxes off from the grey background. Still, though, informative picture set.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you never seen a Think Secret gallery before?
- rebotfc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Just goes to show the attention to detail Apple gives their OS at every level. Both linux and mircosoft can learn something.
- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Look at the Apple Talk logo... its rainbow and Os 8-ish
- Trevahaha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think it's cause AppleTalk is kinda retro. Seems appropriate.
- DOGPARTY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Look at the AppleTalk logo, its appropriate for the technology"
- cave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Do want!
- AmazingSyco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8ThinkSecret typically doesn't go down when they get dugg, but they do slow the hell down. That's why I resorted to shell scripting.
for a in $(for i in $(curl http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/index.html | grep -o 'source/.*.html'); do curl "http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/$i" | grep -o "../image/[a-z0-9]*.jpg"; done); do curl -O "http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/source/$a"; done
Make a new dir, cd into it, and run that script in a term. It'll batch download the pictures into that folder. It'll take awhile to run, but it seems to work pretty well for me. Wrote for bash, don't know about other shells. - Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Wow, this looks worse than older versions to my eye. Apple seems to be losing all the things that "brought them back" to me, like color and innovative shapes. I still love my "toilet seat" first gen "blueberry" iBook, I'd buy another if they offered them with modern specs. Now their models and interfaces look like boring office furniture again IMHO. They can keep brushed metal.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1As said above...new toilet seat iBooks would force me to start using Windows.
- stxhess, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0actually its not brushed metal. they call it anodized or something. brushed metal is like finder right now.
- Goldspink, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Looks like pinstripes are out, then. They were definitely too noticeable in early OS X, but the level in 10.4 is just right. I like them as they add an ever-so-slight texture that stops things looking too 'perfect'.
- nodlezfodlez, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1is it just me or does the thumbnail down from the top center look somewhat like goatse?
- KyleDoherty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it's definitely just you.
- deaftly, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0ubuntu + beryl + advant dock > all
- morphie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No way the hacked beryl on a bloated XServer with a copied-from-apple dock is better than the original Quartz desktop by apple. Come on, you can love Linux, but be real about the things you say.
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Beryl is cool, but the actual OSX dock has yet to be beaten by any clone.
- morphie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No way the hacked beryl on a bloated XServer with a copied-from-apple dock is better than the original Quartz desktop by apple. Come on, you can love Linux, but be real about the things you say.
- poesybeater, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Why do so many people take screenshots of Mac windows without including the window shadows? It takes about 2 extra seconds to do it right.
- FXPooky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think the redesign isn't that bad. However, what is up with those toolbar icons? If you look at the grey buttons on top of, say, this window http://www.thinksecret.com/archives/leopard9a527/image/system-preferences001.jpg , you can see that they are extremely pixelly on the edges and not round. The arrows are also not centered vertically. What the hell happened to Apple's design team? That looks horrible and XP-ish to me... those new close/maximize/minimize buttons are too colour saturated, too.
- pinchies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My new lcd has a fantastic contrast ratio, but it already makes the "widdle dots" (window controls) look like the crayons from xp. I am not looking forward to this. I was hoping not to have to use the graphite theme... great.
- Darkyuubi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1WOW that dock on the side is ugly....
- tyywebb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The dock..........on the side?!?!?!?!

- TheRealToma, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I dont get it, are Macs UI designed for the mentally handicapped? I mean, who needs an icon thats as big as the freaking screen? Maybe Im missing something.
- DarkDx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Thanks to high resolution icons now we can see that the kid in preview's icon is a asiatic.
Hooray for Apple!
/sarcasm - pathetik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If they didn't resolve the calendar icon keeping the right date...
Leopard a dud ! - Shiftyeyedgoat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1is this... different.. somehow?
Did I miss something? - whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Smallest issue ever, but the divider (crosswalk) on the dock is wrong. It would be correct if it was right in the middle of the dock, but it's off to the right so it should be angled more like a backslash ( ). The vanishing point should be determined by the angles at the edges of the dock. I wouldn't have mentioned it, but Apple's pretty meticulous about this kinda stuff, and they seem to have missed it... Oh.. and I'm very happy they got rid of the pinstripes, and brushed metal and went more iTunesy for the whole thing. And coverflow rocks my socks because there was a missing gap in the Mac OS for a filmstrip/giant thumbnail view and Apple did one better by letting you see enormous thumbnails and being able to sort them, via the list at the bottom. Good on ya!
- pinchies, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1PLEASE READ THIS AND DIGG THIS GUY UP!!!! ^^^
- neseus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2hey yeah you're right.. they've got two vanishing points going on. good eye.
- cywei99, on 02/05/2008, -0/+1I love apple. Apple computers are cooler than the normal PCs. Three cheers for Apple!
