- RyAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45Great if true. But Thinksecret has lost its sources and has been pulling stuff out of its butt for over a year. They're just guessing.
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38Somewhere near the beginning of Summer.
- bandomac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39iWork does not come pre-installed on Macs
- colecovizion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Core Animation + iPhoto = yum..... sources say
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28You can all thank me if Leopard comes out in March as I JUST ordered my new Mac today...so Leopard will come out one day after I'm eligible for a free upgrade to the OS.
You're welcome.... - thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23I just wish Apple would release a date so I know if I should buy my macbook now, or wait a month for 10.5 >:-O
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Wait. Leopard is shaping up to be a lot better than Tiger.
- candle.stick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Yea same here I'm sitting on a couple grand waiting for a new 20 inch iMac.
- npsken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17And what are you basing that off? Torrent downloads? Get real.
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Wow, for pretty much all your points you have thought of a reason (in brackets) to not listen to them. Idiot.
- ultimathule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Bold well. Bald well. Bode well?
Bald well. - foolonthehill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have a 15" MacBook Pro on the cards but I'm waiting until the end of April or until Leapord comes out. There could be a hardware upgrade by then too; I think Intel have an update to the mobile Core 2 family on the way.
- nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10When does Spring end?
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So what do you suggest? Hold back development in favour of backwards compatibility? How about doing the MSFT way of doing things by incorporating features into the software and not releasing the APIs and DLLs? Have you noticed how MSFT use custom file/print dialog boxes while leaving the common dialog DLLs languishing? Apparently the common ones are not extensible or good enough for even MSFT to use them.
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8While I dugg your comment up, it's not as if the new versions of iLife or iWork won't work on Tiger or Panther. Some specific features just won't work as slick or "lickable" as intended. But I agree, there is a certain bias against Microsoft, perhaps of their huge market share, or their past history in screwing people over...
- warnergt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Will iDVD support Blu-Ray? Inquiring minds want to know.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Thinksecret's just pulling this out of their asses. Most developers have said that Leopard is nowhere near ready for primetime. A WWDC release is far more likely.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6... and that's why Apple isn't giving a release date. Incidentally, the end of March is closer to two months out than one month.
If you use iWork and/or iLife heavily, I'd say wait and see if this end-of-March rumor pans out. If you don't, or if it doesn't, I'd go ahead and buy. The next likely "window" is WWDC in June, and that's *another* three months off.
Honestly, I don't see what about Leopard is so exciting. Certainly worth an upgrade sooner or later, if only for the third-party apps that will inevitably rely on the new under-the-hood features like Obj-C 2.0. But none of the big-ticket features announced so far is terribly compelling. Tiger's a pretty nice OS, and should tide you over just fine until Leopard shows up and you feel like upgrading. - csj89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6everybody knows thinksecret is full of crap.
- thefreshbeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm sure they'll be giving free OSX 10.5 upgrades within 30 days of your purchase, if not more. Show concern during your purchase and have the store manager on duty write and initial "free OSX 10.5 upgrade within xx days" on your reciept.
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sweeeeeet! Can't wait!
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
What is Apple's return/upgrade policy? Within 14 days or 30?
I ask because I'm itching for a 15" MacBook Pro, especially from the Apple Refurb section of their website. It would be nice if I bought it just before these releases that I would be able to get them [iLife07 & 10.5] for free without waiting (and waiting...and waiting) for their releases.
Granted, the 15" MacBook Pros quickly disappear from the Refurb section. Just a few hours, from what I've seen... - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If $129 is worth 2, 3, 4, or 5 months of your time, then wait. It will likely be at least June or July until the OS is released and any problems with it or existing problems are sufficiently shaken out.
I bought my first iBook knowing that Tiger would be released in a couple of months and I didn't regret it at all. It wasn't until June or July that I was ready to upgrade the OS anyway. - serpicolugnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I would love for a March Leopard release, but I seriously doubt it. Why? Well, here's a few reasons:
1st: It's almost the middle of February, and we've heard nothing regarding a release date. Leopard contains a TON of under the hood modifications to the OS, and as a result, it breaks a bunch of apps. Giving third party developers a month to fix their app to work with a new OS isn't cool. Apple traditionally gives a little more notice than that. Factor in the rumor that a whole new UI will be part of Leopard, and there is almost no way Apple would spring a release that monumental without ample lead time for the 3rd party developers.
2nd: The builds of Leopard have yet to hit Release Candidate status, let alone Final Candidate status. Once the OS hits RC, it's usually between 4-6 weeks before the final release.
3rd: With WWDC in early June, I'm betting Apple will use it as a launching pad for Leopard and other new Mac products. Apple will want to make the Leopard launch the event of the year, and what better way than to couple it with WWDC. Plus, technically, early June is still spring. - scelestus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ Dotmeister
Your sense of humor is broken. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i think we'll see more than just speed bumps. what about those quad-core cpus?
- Naga10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't see anything wrong with that. If they have an amazing new technology with Leopard, you expect them not to use it with iLife? That's just retarded.
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8What's Excel? Is that sort of like Google Spreadsheets?
Does it support the function GoogleLookup where you can pass the arguments "Japan" and "GDP" to get the value $4T? - chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I would wait if you can. Even if it takes till June. $129 to upgrade to Leopard (not to mention the price for the iLife and iWork '07 upgrades) is worth waiting a few months to avoid if possible.
- musicbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well Excel is still pretty sweet. To be the office Excel stud gives you god like powers over all you survey... Though to be able to be MS Office suite free would be cool... and certainly anything more intuitive than Excel would be a real boon to those who don't want be an Excel stud and just want to get some basic tasks done quickly.
I would also like to see some real improvements to iWork's Pages as well. The fact that the doc's created are packages and when uploaded to certain services that others can download from, they are seen as file folders and not as individual files is one minor complaint. - adamjbuckland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes but unlike the G5 powerbook and 3GHz Powermac G5, shipping in March is physically possible without falling into a black hole
- cbeach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"According to sources" .. "according to another source" etc..
right.
Waiting patiently for some genuine Apple news.. - capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK...but...
WHY is there absolutely no word...not even a hint...not even a credible rumor about new Macs of any kind??? The only new Apple hardware this year was all announced at MWSF, but not a single new Mac. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Slideshows would be mind blowing with Core Animation! I'm trying to resist the urge to mention Windo... ok, I wont go there. I hope to God the rumor of Leopard including iLife '07 and iWork '07 is true. Even if they said OS X Leopard was $179 and not the usual $129, that would simply marvelous. Now that Vista includes a photo managing application Apple might feel more pushed to at least include iLife '07. If they do this it will be a clever move, come on they're meant to be the king simplicity, this would be their way of proving it once and for all.
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4npsken... shipping an OS isnt a secretive affair. They distribute builds to their developers through ADC. Saying its "ahead of schedule" when no one has seen an RC build yet is just lame. When the Release Candidate build gets sent to developers, it'll release at least a month after that.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It makes a lot of sense at this point to tie iWork and iLife to Leopard - not so much for Core Animation, as Time Machine. Integrating version control into an office suite and consumer applications could be a really cool thing for many home users.
The iWork and iLife products of today are plenty good and stable enough that people who wanted to keep running Tiger for a while could easily make do until they felt ready to move to Leopard. - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"10.5 was promised for Spring. it should ship pre-WWDC"
Promised?
So was the G5 Powerbook, and the 3Ghz Powermac G5, and the ... - tucsonwc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hope so. I also am waiting to see dual QUAD core MacPro.
I am presuming they are waiting to ship Leopard before they announce it. :(
That with Leopard, ilife07, VMWare Fusion 1.0 will make for an awesome computing platform.
The Best of all possible worlds. - l0tharnt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*points to Apple sales chat button for answers to questions*
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would believe this story if 10.4.9 was shipped. They will release 10.5 without sorting out 10.4.x problems?
- clesch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, point #3 was the first thing that came to my mind. A launch in March with WWDC following in June just makes no sense at all - at least not when you go by the content of previous Keynotes at the WWDC.
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hope iMovie 07 can edit .MOD/Muxed Mpegs. I'm holding off buying a new camcorder cause I wouldn't be able to edit anything I shoot.
- sesante2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My brother and I bought a couple Mac Minis about a month and a half before the release of tiger. We went to the apple store to see what the employees would says if we wanted a upgrade. I thought I was entitled since I got my mini just 2 days before the official "free upgrade point" and my brother got his long before mine. We still both got free upgrades. Only paid for shipping and materials, 10 Bucks.
- adamjbuckland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keynote + Core Animation = *jaw drops*
- jervin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually Leo Leporte on TWIT or Windows Weekly can't recall which said the exact opposite last week. Saying Leopard is going to be delayed. Guess we will just have to wait and see.
- brewno2k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Spreadsheets, nice. Finally Apple is getting rid of Excel.
- MindlessSoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, I would agree that waiting would be smart. If Leopard ends up coming out much later, then with your saved money maybe you could buy the new LOW end quad core with an nVidia 8800 pre-installed (you know instead of the 8 core model); instead of the imac, or mac mini, whatever.
- caldaean, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Actually, it comes preinstalled. Either that, or that iWork folder on both my machines + DVD install discs are a completely different iWork. No serial is supplied though, so you have to pay after 30 days. But still, it is preinstalled.
- flowctrl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Forthcoming in the next couple of months: Leopard, new iLife, iWork, and macs with an LED backlit displays. I wouldn't buy a mac right now unless it was absolutely necessary...
- pankajsharma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Fix the iPhoto crap.
