- MacParrot, on 01/22/2008, -3/+32You do know you can turn off Apple posts in digg if it really bothers you that much. OH! Also you don't HAVE to make comments either! Isn't that great!
- NeoRicen, on 01/22/2008, -4/+33It's great Apple's actually listening to customer feedback. First the non-3d dock on the sides, the improvements to Stacks and now the menu-bar.
- roberto_deneero, on 01/22/2008, -2/+25I wish they would bring back 14 3.5" floppy diskettes to install OS updates. Nothing better than having to swap 14 diskettes over a 2 hour period and listen to the floppy drive grind it out. Nostalgia FTW!!
- nfxmedia, on 01/22/2008, -7/+26Looks like they're listening.
Let's hope they implement this next: http://www.digg.com/apple/Leopard_s_Stacks_done_ri ... - Tserk, on 01/22/2008, -2/+17Folder/List in the dock = win
- TremorX, on 01/22/2008, -5/+20I wish they'd put the rounded corners on the menu bar back. :(
- Spartan225, on 01/22/2008, -3/+15No how about they get this update right so that we are all not waiting for 10.5.3 so they fix something that they forgot in 10.5.2. I would rather a solid update than one that is just thrown out there.
- epohs, on 01/22/2008, -5/+16On the contrary, I would say that this is a very welcome addition. I couldn't understand why someone would want to decrease the readability of arguably THE most important UI aspect of the OS.
- Eminemdrdre00, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10I'm not sure that made sense...
- knightboat, on 01/22/2008, -4/+13On the contrary, I'd say you were the one hating and stalking all Apple stories. You obviously have nothing to add to the subject but vitriol and spite.
- techweenie1, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9I wish they'd bring back the counting fingers cursor too.
- epohs, on 01/22/2008, -1/+10I was talking about the menu bar at the top of the screen, not the dock at the bottom. :)
- MacParrot, on 01/22/2008, -4/+12Time Machine will still not work on non-Time Capsule connected (internal) drives? Sorry, but this is something that Apple should fix. I have a first gen Airport Extreme (802.11n) 100gb and allowing for connected network drives off of it to be used for Time Machine should be a given. I wouldn't necessarily use it myself, but I could see where others would.
Transparent menus? Meh, I leave it on because that's what's native in 10.5, but don't really care one way or another. Being able to turn off the Dock transparencies and 3D effect AND giving better indications of what programs are running than that nearly impossible to see blue ball would be of better use in this update AFAIC. Yes, I know I can turn it on or off with Terminal, but why should it take that to do so?
I like Leopard and consider it an improvement over Tiger, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be better...MUCH better. - vibrokatana, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8The tools are already there, they just make it accessible to the end user.
- Firehed, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9Oh, it's not just me? I thought I was insane. I'm sick of the cmd+K smb://192.160.0.20 thing (or even running my quick-drive-mount applescript)
- BabyGotMac, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8Just wanted to say that I appreciate the comments and will gladly answer any left on my site. So far it's holding up pretty well despite digg, macrumors and a dozen others sending 30K+ visitors in the last 24 hours. *knock on wood*
PS: Later tonight I will demo TM backup to the Express. Check back or sub to the rss feed. - AronT, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8Displaperture is your friend
- splitsixty, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6So now that I know what the update will entail, WHEN is the update?
- etx313, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6And I don't see why any would find Sara Jessica Parker hot. It's called choice guy.
- newbill123, on 01/22/2008, -2/+8You can resize by more than 144 points on a window. They all just happen to be right next to each other in the lower right corner. :-)
- 5wallace, on 01/22/2008, -2/+8Personally, I agree, but if you go to the macrumors comment thread on the subject you will see that a ton of people hate the menu bar transparency.
- directive0, on 01/22/2008, -3/+8the point is CHOICE!
- Firehed, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5TM/TC settings would be a function of both the router firmware and the OS. I'm in a similar situation - I probably wouldn't use it but would like the option. But I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a firmware update for the older routers enabling better AirDisk support and allowing it to be used as a TM drive. You have to remember that TC isn't going to be available for a couple weeks - Apple could quite easily release 10.5.2 to the public by then as well as push out a firmware update to existing Airports. Seeing that there are a few other stupid issues with the Airport that have existed for some time, adding a pretty simple feature could easily be rolled up in a bug fix, and now would be a good time to do it.
- bigsteve, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Samba.
And most disks aren't formatted HFS+, even if they're meant for use on Mac OSX. They're usually CDFS. - newbill123, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4As someone who uses the feature to invert colors, I'm glad the rounded menubar corners are gone since they would stand out as glowing white fangs on the corner of my screen. If Apple could find a way to make them less distracting that'd be fine, but it was an improvement when they were removed. Sorry if it caused you a loss in functionality.
- jesstech, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4Because of classic mac nostalgia.
- Kypt, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Because you were lucky, many people are having issues with samba shares. Be happy you are not :)
- masterc, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5What's worthless? Your comment?
- coit, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5Definitely NOT just you.
- Billistic, on 01/22/2008, -2/+6Who cares about previews, it'll be news when they release the update...
- Firehed, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5I find the dock tends to be a more efficient use of the screen compared to the Windows taskbar, but I guess that shows it's down to personal preference. I hardly use either as I use Quicksilver and Launchy on my respective home and work systems, but I find that the dock is like the quick launch bar on steroids and that the remainder of the taskbar tends to get too crowded to be useful beyond a status indicator which the dock already does. To me, it's the same information in less space, presented in a more useful manner - but to each his own.
- astrosmash, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Yup.
http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/bonjour ...
It's just a Samba share (open source) advertised on the local network using Bonjour (open source).
But don't worry, in 5 years KDE will come up with its own ass-backwards way of doing the same thing. - MacParrot, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4"i hate to say this (i have a mac myself), but the "list view" of stacks reminds me a lot of... the start button?"
It's more like the Start Button on Acid. You can have the equivalent of multiple Start button-ish features, but not nearly as easy to use. I've found "Stacks" so far to be almost useless. Maybe it will improve with age. I hope so. - wordsofwisedumb, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4On the contrary, making the users aware of the file structure of their machine is only a good thing. It has been simplified enough on OS X that applications appear to be one file and are easily found. The start menu keeps users in the dark about how their storage space is organized which is only a bad thing when it comes to advancement of computer literacy.
- roberto_deneero, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3The fact that some people find her remotely attractive is the 8th wonder of the world. She is nastier than 2girls1cup.
- bbqsalad, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4She was hot before she died and was re-built.
- Verdanic, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Why are a lot of people missing those? Honest question. I can't say it bothers me - then again I was only on Tiger for a couple months before getting Leopard.
- moofer, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3She looks like a horse
- bbqsalad, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3It looks like crap if you have say a green or bright color wallpaper.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Or... less like Vista!
- bigsteve, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3@TomKarpik
You're making two points here. In your first stanza you appear to be searching for something that shares a device block-level. That'd be iSCSI.
In your second stanza, you still seem bent on burning optical media with a journaling file system, which defeats the purpose of a journal. But if you insist, then there exist open source implementations of AFP which will properly interpret ACLs and resource forks.
Hard disks meant for use in OS X might certainly be HFS+, but the default burn format even in OS X is CDFS. - SSUK, on 01/22/2008, -5/+8He never said anything anti-Apple here, he just said there has to be more exciting news right now other than about how Apple implemented the disc share feature announced a week ago and a mundane option to turn off translucency in the menubar. You apple zealots sure are a jumpy bunch...
- bigsteve, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Adhering to the BSD license doesn't constitute "taking advantage of OSS." The software packages Apple has leveraged in their OS are licensed by their creators in such a way to allow this to go on. Get a clue.
- newbill123, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3I agree that Apple hasn't really given much thought to good ways to use stacks.
I'd like to see stacks of "Smart Folders" but right now you can't put smart folders in the dock.
I'd like to see the idea of "desktop printers" brought back and being able to select your default printer by choosing it from a stack in the dock rather than the desktop.
I'd like to see a "device" stack which shows all the mounted drives in the stack so that opening and ejecting disks can be an activity in the dock rather than buried under windows on the desktop.
I think that stacks is a good interface for displaying a group of less than 10 items, but the number of ways this could be used has barely been scratched. - dbr_onix, on 01/22/2008, -2/+5There's plenty of OS X icon changing tools around - you can do it yourself.
I'd be amazed if there wasn't already icon themes to make the icons look like Tiger did - smrekar, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4this is exciting for mac users. Given that you dont have to read/comment or even view it, given the right will power and settings, not sure why that comment was necessary.
- kaiwai, on 01/22/2008, -4/+7Correction, a hacked up illegal version.
- Chode2235, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2Its not the 3D dock, but those stupid glowing Orbs under the running programs.
- crazyman, on 01/22/2008, -1/+3WHOA, what application is meatwad?
- astrosmash, on 01/22/2008, -0/+2February,
With OS updates they're more concerned about getting it right than letting the release date slip. -
