- netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21SSE3 = CPU instruction set extension. Use CPU-Z to check if your CPU supports it.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Linux users can get this information by entering cat /proc/cpuinfo in the console. If you see SSE3 anywhere in the output then your CPU supports it.
- skr3dii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17SSE3 appears to be a set of instructions that your CPU must support in order to install and run this on your PC. You can verify with this progie: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-137.zip
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Right, just like these sites:
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/
http://www.insanelymac.com/ - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18you can use `cat /proc/cpuinfo` on linux.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Anyone know if this will work on my computer? I've got a Macbook Pro.
- dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15bah, gotta wait for the SSE2 patch.
- oliveroms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Note; SSE3 is known as pni, so if you cat /proc/cpuinfo and don't get sse3, it's cause it's called pni there.
- AngryBacon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Wow, 2 seeds, 1057 leaches...
PLEASE seed when your done. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Taking unfair advantage of the reply button, but the link to the post :

correction, Linux users should check for pni rather than sse3 in /proc/cpuinfo.

- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Thanks for your response, and thanks to the folks that burried me, they were probably the same people who dugg you up for answering the question I asked, go figure!
- DrivinWest, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I've played around with OS X on a PC for a while now. I did it, not because I'm into hacking, but because I wanted to see if I could get used to a desktop Apple computer (I already have a PowerBook and love it). After fooling with it for a while it convinced me to buy the 20" iMac I'm typing on right now.
If you try it and like it then buy the quality hardware to go with the quality OS. It'll be more stable and most of all supported! - nikolas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Use CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

enjoy, the torrent - taitacakes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The biggest problem for all this is supporting laptop wireless cards. I'll install this in a flash when my card is supported, until then, I can only dream. Thanks for the SSE3 checker too, skr3dii!
- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Chipset. For Gods Sake, if you are interested in this at all, fo to osx86project.org and figure out these questions for your self.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3any mirrors for this torrent ?
else can somebody put the torrent in rapidshare ? - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Download JaS 10.4.8 Intel SSE2 Combo Update is now available, however when one clicks the demonoid torrent link there's a message saying you must be a member to download, and membership is not open again until next Friday, damn!
http://macgeek.freeflux.net/blog/archive/2006/10/14/jas-10-4-8-combo-sse2-sse3-is-out.html - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Its because the kernel was limited to the 10.4.4 release for the longest time. Since then, the only thing you could do was update some kexts. Now, the kernel has taken a great advancement, which allows certain programs to be installed, certain upgrades to the operating system and much better kexts to be installed. This is a great advancement.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8As the site linked says, there will be a PPF patch eventually
PS RTFA - AngryBacon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It says if you have SSE2 or AMD to download it now because he's going to release a patch soon.
- zerooveride427, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the torrent seems to be dead at 64.4%. . . dang it
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have been running OSX 10.4.5/7 on my DELL B120 for about 7 months now, with a bit tweaking & reading the insanelymac forums I GOT EVERYTHING working built-in wifi, sound, video (1280x800 on a 14" screen), battey/charge icon on the toolbar etc.. its not that hard really but I still prefer Apple Hardware..
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you'll need an HFS+ (Mac OS file system) volume to install on for sure. boot from the dvd and when Mac OS boots into the installation choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar and be on your way. if you've ever partitioned or formatted a disk before you should be comfortable using Disk Utility.
- LocalH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right now I'm showing 71.8% but 0KB download rate. There's only one seed right now, what do you expect? If you don't want to let the torrent sit there, then just wait a day or so, to make sure that there's more than one seed.
- hobier, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3iLife 06 ..
can somebody tell whether the video card, sound card and network works??? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
- LocalH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not dead, it's just slow. In 12 hours I've gone from 71.8% to 85%.
- avidlinuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3My P4 supports SSE3. I'm pretty sure any Core 2 Duo processor supports it.
- makingme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its not the hardware, its the software that causes mac to be virus free. If you think about it, apple hardware is really just an incarnation of hardware already existing for PC, but is hardwired for Apple software only.
- orph3us, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's funny, as each release of osx86 comes out, we are still or even more so restricted to the hardware that apple is using. We've had a useable version of osx for generic pcs for a while now, but the limiting factor is still and always will be drivers. So the options are, for me at least, and others who are interested in this, buy a pc that is basically identical hardware to a mac, or get a mac. I guess the good part about this on generic hardware is that if you want a tower running osx, you dont have to go with mac pro quad xeons, and can run a core duo instead. Still, video card is a limiting factor if you're looking to upgrade with the latest and greatest ;(.. I still don't understand if we can use 10.4.8s nvidia drivers with this release, or even if those drivers are a unified driver release supporting more than one series of video card (7300gt is what ive seen in all the macs) and if efi is still a problem with these drivers. If anyone can clarify these points, I and others would surely be interested :)
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was able to get the image downloaded, booted off the resulting DVD and installed to one of my SATA hard drives, but I cannot figure out how to boot off of that drive. Even if I just have that drive installed and try to run "Startup Disk" off of the DVD, it doesn't find the installed drive.
- JustinH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im dead at 77.2%...maybe it will pick back up during the day
- lakki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hello,
I got Intel 2.4 HT with MMX,SSE and SSE2 support, will this version of Mac OS X86 10.4.8 work on my system?
Thanks,
regards,
Lakki - Raisani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm also giving it a try, currently at 98,9% :-)
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hobier:
It's hit and miss. My previous computer (P4 2.8Ghz, Intel 865PERL mobo, ATI Radeon 9600 XT 256MB, 768MB RAM) ran OS X better than it did XP! Boot times were consistently in the low 10s, only complaint I had was cursor artifacts.
Now with my new system (Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz, Intel 975XBX mobo, nVidia 7600GS, 512MB RAM) it boots even faster (seven seconds is my record :)). Sound doesnt work initially (Semtek 221 HDA audio. Requires a simple patch available on insanelymac.com), and theres no QE/CI (which I had with my Radeon), though it's only a matter of time before the macvidia boys fix that.
I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone with a recent Intel system. - AngryBacon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Because the kernel and software is optimized for mac hardware, which has SSE3, as opposed to Vista and Linux which are setup to run on a much broader range of hardware.
- aneks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not yet. You have to wait for SSE2 intel ppf
- JustinH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0could anyone offer an explanation as to why the download often goes fast at some points and then dog slow to 0 kb...thanks
only 496 mb left *crosses fingers hoping it will finish tonight* - coon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im at 90.72% and I have about 400 mb to go. I dont think its dead, but it looks like im leading the pack. woo hoo, except if it doesnt finish :(, I don't really know why im even downloading it, I guess i just want to see if it works, and how well it works.
- Litespeed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7What part of "AMD & SSE2 users have to wait for a ppf to be applied on this DVD." are you having trouble with?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0What part of 'MAC OS X86 10.4.8 for INTEL SSE3' didnt you understand. No SSE3 = No worky on your computer.
- jordn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ cacoe
unlikely dude. you may get GL support by downloading the macvidia drivers, but they ***** up my computer so i had to re-install. WMMV. for the full graphics "bells and whistles", i recommend getting an ASUS X1600XT. some decent guy managed to get it fully supported i.e Quartz, Core Image, dual DVI support for monitor spanning, etc.
for more info, check out the insanely mac forum. - advcomp2019, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3He might have the nForce chipset with an Intel CPU because they do make them.
- FLAGEL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't get it, why the heck is this such a big deal? Really, why?
Just because some hacker released an open source 10.4.8-kernel that runs OS X without the requirement of Apple hardware via TPM doesn't change a thing if you think about it.
You still have nearly no hardware support for your non-Apple hardware. And you were already able to run OS X on non-Apple hardware before, with the help of cracked close source kernels. And it's not legal, because as soon as someone ads the "magicpoem" into the code that will let this open source-kernel run OS X as intended it gets illegal.
What this means is that you don't need to crack close source-kernels when a new one is released, but you still have to match up your open source-kernel every time updates are made by apple.
I'm not flaming, could someone just please explain what's soooo amazing about this? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Well when you dump AMD and purchase INTEL. You know if apple opens this to all users its going to be INTEL ONLY.
- thushan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4SSE3 is an instruction set... you dont "run it", its merely some low-level instructions to operate on registers...
