- matthewsr2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why not take the time and swap in an LCD screen while your at it. it would give you a ton more space in the box, and look nicer then the old CRT, not to mention the interface would be just a simple VGA connection cord.
props to the guy though, gotta respect the ingenuity of it. - salmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a Mac Classic that I was looking at either doing this with, or putting a VIA Epia board in. I just want to build something I guess.
My issue was using the existing CRT. It looks like the guy is using the original hardware to run the thing, but I would love to know where and how to hook up a VGA connection to it.
As for the radiation issue, I wouldn't worry too much about the hard drive, figuring the original drive in my Classic has held up for almost 15 years (and 3 owners) and it sits right below the CRT. - Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@drshabazz:
In Japan, the Mac actually has a higher market share than in the US. At its height, it surpassed 12% due to the Mac's superior method of Japanese language input (if I remember correctly) and probably because Japan seems to appreciate industrial design more than the US; the Mac's "cuteness" and other appeals was a major factor in helping it sell well in Japan.
Japan has Apple stores in the ritzy shopping districts too. When I visited Japan last August, my tour group's bus parked right in front of the gorgeous and huge Apple store in Ginza.

Japan is the second largest market for the Macintosh; the first Non U.S. country to open an Apple store. Macworld Expo was even held there....so yeah, not all Japanese use "Sonys"....they truly love their Macs - tokachu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The CRT in the original Macintosh 128Ks, 512Ks, and SE/30's emit huge amounts of electromagnetic radiation -- far more than CRTs of that size today. Considering how delicate the Mac Mini parts are, the hard drive might not work after a few days.
- thyratron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cute project, but I would have liked more detail on how he got the video to work. Getting the amount of content and detail shown on the display would require much different/higher scan frequencies than the original display used, and of course the RGB signals would have to be mixed and fed as greyscale. The orignal display was 1-bit (on/off) so I'm not sure if even the driver board on the crt pins could be reused. Considering that the display had to be essentially all new anyway, one might as well have gone with color.
Someone made a comment about the original display putting out more radiation and that would limit the life of the electronics. That's nonsense. Black and white displays use much lower anode voltages than color, and small screens need less than large ones. What little radiation there is a blocked by use of leaded glass. (The lead in the glass is the reason that old cathode ray tubes require special recycling). Had the original put out as much as the poster here suggested, it would have been just as harmful to the original electronics, and the user too. The mid-60's scare about radiation from color televisions came after General Electric shipped a cut-corner design which had no metal shielding around the high-voltage shunt regulator tube. (An additional load on the high voltage supply that would draw more current when the the c.r.t. drew less on low-brightness scenes, to keep the voltage constant. constant voltage was needed to keep the size of the picture constant, as well as to help stabilize focus and brightness). Later televisions added more sheilding to or around the glass of the shunt regulators, and generally had lower part of the tube surrounded by metal shielding as well.
I didn't see the firewire port extended to the back. It'd be nice to have an internal large hard drive with a firewire or USB 2 interface added for more storage. Even a 3.5" drive would fit pretty easily. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I like it. Used to have an SE/30 back in the day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1also that aint crammed like there is heaps of space in there and it fits almost perectly
- SciGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very, very cool. Too bad we can't find someone to help that guy with his english!
And, hey shrewd: why do PC people like lame neon cases with plexiglass windows? It's a cultural difference -- leave us alone! - DJPandemonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Very important attention!"
- nicnac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0b/w so retro!
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want to see that done on a mac power pc, more room & color crt monitor
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pointless but cool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice. But I would never do this to a working Classic.
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0salmo:
Modifying one of these should be pretty easy:

An 8.4" may get the job done:
http://www.millertech.com/computer-lcds.htm - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Briansolo, jimgardner1973 -
Let's hear you well YOU speak Japanese.
No? I didn't think so. - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid apply fanboys aside, this is a pretty slick mod. I'm not a huge fan of apple myself, but i'd actually consider doing this.
wicked job by the author for making it look so perfect. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But you LOSE the FLOPPY disk SLOT! NO DIGG!!!111!
- drshabazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ho my goodness.
didn't know they even used macs in japan. i thought they used sony's for everything. - salmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jiub:
The first is a little more than I'd like to spend on something that doesn't really fit what I'm doing, but the open LCDs from millertech are perfect.
Thanks for the suggestions! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome project
- ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, that definitely isn't the original 2-bit monitor. He could've found an 8" color CRT, but I guess he wanted the old-school thing. DIGG for using an old mac for something other than a FishTank.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh god.. mac os x in grayscale low res monitor.. inside the apple classic enclosure = horrendus. :-(
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg it when it wasn't in my language and I digg it even more now that it is.
- DjDimitrious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0unfortunately this is blocked at my school, being listed as "general pornography" :(
- salmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try and find an 8" 4:3 aspect ratio LCD for a reasonable price. I honestly don't think they're made. You can find 8" LCDs with touch screens, 7+ inch widescreen LCDs (usually for cars), but then you'd spend a fortune on a silly project or have a bunch of blank space above and below.
I mean if you do find one let me know! But I looked for a couple days about a month ago and came up with squat. - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is awesome! Up until now, I saw no good use for a Mac Mini... I mean, they're nice and small, but oh-so-slow! digg!
- TwistTim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this looks so nice that I would try it, if I had an old Mac SE30 lying around. Thank you CLIFF for sharing this, this is Digg Worthy
- RHEEK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha, awesome.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I wanna put an old Winblows machine inside a toilet. Lift the lid and it's the monitor. Keyboard embedded in seat."
I'd prefer to just crap in someone's PC. - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Looks home built,he should have paid more attention to details.
Lets see yours.. - elfhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha that's awesome!
- Erkan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks homebuilt,he should have paid more attention to details.
- sandb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it because he managed to keep the mini intact inside: its very simple and yet nice... you can try to do it yourself without a big risk of ending up with a broken mini...
As for the 2-bit CRT -> i don't believe there is actually something like a 2-bit CRT, afaik, CRT's are analog so probably the SE30 just had a 2-bit video adaptor... - jjustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time!
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why?
- cobweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have an SE/30 at home, and yeah the video adapter only does 2 color. But there is an expansion card you can get to adapt it to do grayscale so it's possible he managed to hook up VGA to the original CRT. I wish there was more detail as to how he did that... it my SE/30 ever dies I'll do something like this with it.
- hibiscusroto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why?! Because you can! Interesting/cool mod.
- hholland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haven't we been seeing stuff like this since the mac mini came out?
- McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ho my goodness.
didn't know they even used macs in japan. i thought they used sony's for everything."
Japanese don't even think very highly of Sony. - Makr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome.
- KinGvsKinG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0general pr0n? what school you got to? you should be studying, not surfing the net!
- giveme1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"General Pornography" What the hell!? damn school. looks like i'll have to check it when i get home.
- officemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If only there was a small color flat panel screen that could be put in there instead of the Mac SE screen.
I loved my Mac SE, especially the form factor. - eltoozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I already did this, and mine is better:
This is my worst nightmare that this got dug before me:

I will do a writeup now. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was considering doing a mod like this... My first computer was an SE (not SE30), so the form factor has sentimental value. I'd want to retrofit it with a 9" LCD, though, and I'd probably take the mac mini apart so the components could be re-arranged to fit better.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If only that had been done with a color classic. . .
That is truly a cool mod. I like how he used the slots in front to make a CD input slot. - artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A little rough around the edges, but great mod. Like how the CD comes out the front vent. The Minis are so much more versatile than the Cube. You can fit these into almost anything. Wasn't there a guy who put one in the dashboard of his car?
I saw that Microcenter has a Mac Mini System for under $500.00...
* Mac mini - 1.25GHz
* 14" LCD display
* Epson CX4200 All-in-One Printer
* Macally Keyboard
* Macally Mouse
Damn, if they only had this in January...but here's an example of how a regular consumer can get a Mac for a good price. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is the coolest thing I've seen all day. I've got an old SE30 in the garage and I'm going to do this.
