- tanmaker, on 12/01/2008, -8/+90Windows is still dominating the computer world, and there is no getting around that.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -5/+74many people i know have bought macbooks or imacs in the recent years, most did it because of the ipod/iphone influence
- InorganicMatter, on 12/01/2008, -14/+74A Macbook is $1000 more than it's PC equivalent? Tell me, where can you buy a 13.3" laptop with an LED-backlight screen, a 2GHz 45nm CPU, 2GB of DDR3, and a mobile GeForce 9400, for ($1299-$1000) = $299? Because I'll sign up for at least a dozen at that price.
- InorganicMatter, on 12/01/2008, -4/+59Linux is at 0.83% LOL! You'd think it was approaching well over 50% by the direction of discussions around these parts.
*runs and hides* - Wormwoods, on 12/01/2008, -1/+40For the average user, computers are nearly useless without internet access.
- blank89, on 12/01/2008, -4/+41Woo! Linux for 1%!
- roxgod666, on 12/01/2008, -17/+54In other news, a large scam is sweeping across and has captured almost 9% of the population. Be aware of overpriced products known as "Macintosh" and "iPod". Their workers claim to be geniuses, but like all scams...it is just a pile of propaganda.
- iamnotcreative, on 12/01/2008, -2/+33Oh hey my copy of XP SP2 runs great and it's on the web all the time. I'm pretty sure computer problems have a lot more to do with the person behind the keyboard rather than the OS on the device to which the keyboard is plugged.
- EntropyFan, on 12/01/2008, -18/+45Yes, and Vista sits at 20%+. And is increasing market share (all on its lonesome) faster then Apple.
And that is with all the bad press. That is being a 'failure'.
Now that MS has Vista straightened out with SP1, wonder what is going to happen? - crazzy88ss, on 12/01/2008, -10/+35Yea but where's vista gaining its new market from? Old XP users. Which means that XP market share is going down.
OSX is gaining its new market from XP users as well. Therefore, over all, Windows share is going down, and OSX share is going up. It's not rocket science. - benologist, on 12/01/2008, -4/+27Why would you count the iPhone as "Mac vs Windows" marketshare? The iPhone isn't exactly an alternative to a computer.
Apple's getting huge sales but adding however many millions of iPhones to the market is not the same as taking marketshare away from Windows. - ajonsey, on 12/01/2008, -6/+27Let us not forget Windows still has 90%, and Mac only has 8.87%. That's like a war between Russia + USA + Europe + China + India vs. Sierra Leone
- crpietschmann, on 12/01/2008, -31/+51I considered buying a Macbook recently, but I just couldn't get myself to spend an extra $1,000 just to be able to run OSX in addition to Vista. The Apple Tax is crazy!! Being a Software Developer (mostly Web) it'd be nice to be able to more easily test on a Mac, but I couldn't justify the cost for my mobile dev box.
I was able to buy a comparable (same CPU, more RAM) PC laptop for about $1,000 cheaper than the equivalent Macbook. That's just crazy!!
After thinking about it, I decided that if I really want to get a Macbook later on, I'll just buy the $1,000 Macbook and end up having a setup that costs the same and performs much better being that it'll be 2 computers. Pure Craziness! - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -2/+21He meant dual boot it.
- LucasVB, on 12/01/2008, -0/+18Hooray! But buried for TrueColor image saved as a dithered GIF saved as a JPEG.
- cadebbie, on 12/02/2008, -5/+21I will be purchasing my first Mac soon. I'm looking forward to it.
- Hodor, on 12/01/2008, -17/+33Lynx ftw.
- sdwilly, on 12/01/2008, -2/+17You know that a Honda is on average a lot more reliable than a BMW (or Mercedes), right?
- diskoh, on 12/02/2008, -1/+15That's a good point. Counting the iphone as a Mac is like counting the Xbox as Windows.
- drlha, on 12/01/2008, -15/+29You pays yer money, you takes yer choice. If you think a Mac is too expensive, don't buy one. I think the same way about Ferraris, I'd like one but they're too expensive for me, so I bought a Honda.
Why do people seem to think they have some god given right to own a Mac at a price lower than Apple wants to sell them at, and constantly bitch and moan about the fact? Some people think they're worth the premium. Whether you agree or not is by the by, the price is what it is. - saikyan, on 12/02/2008, -0/+14The hardware-software integration that Apple offers IS a benefit, yes. But, it is not the pillar of achievement that you make it out to be. The problems that come from the diverse hardware environment are not frequent or insurmountable- it usually just comes down to a matter of drivers or software versions. As for Windows, the biggest headaches usually come from malware or some other kind of user neglect. I won't argue with you about OS X working better, because it does. OS X is awesome, and working in IT I have found it does a better job serving people than Windows does. Mac's are overpriced but they do work well, I give you that.
But it's definately a trade-off. I've been working with Mac's for longer than I've been working with PCs... about 17 years in fact... and I must say, the premium you pay is higher now than it has been since the mid 90's. It's absurd. Earlier today I was comparing an ASUS F8Va-C1 to a MacBook Pro on Newegg. The ASUS is $650 cheaper but the specs trump the Mac in almost every way.
The old car analogy has been beaten to death. It doesn't work. Never has, never will. Your Mercedes/BMW/Lexus whatever costs more because it has 300 HP, RWD or AWD, leather seats, 10 speaker media centers, 7-speed transmissions, 18" wheels, electronic gadgets, etc. etc. The Honda/Chevy/Ford whatever will have a more modest engine, probably FWD, 6-speaker stereos, 5-speed transmissions, and optional accessories/electronics. My point is that more expensive cars are more expensive because they providing more of something, be it features, performance, size... whatever. Apple does not provide more, they just craft an appealing package.
Given the knowhow, Mac OS runs just fine on PC hardware. In fact, offhand I can't think of anything my "hackintosh" system can't do that a native Mac can. - threemagic, on 12/02/2008, -4/+17Or she's not a 16 year old boy worrying about Gears of War 2 running on her computer...
It's ok to like OS X.. it really is. - DuMbGuM, on 12/01/2008, -1/+14You could always google "Hackintosh" I suppose.. =]
I bought a Macbook sometime ago and find myself only using using it occasionally for some Final Cut / Motion 3 work, Windows is more suited to me tbh. - FredFredrickson, on 12/01/2008, -5/+18The best way to have irresponsible family members browse the net safely isn't to purchase a $1200+ Apple computer... just install FireFox or Chrome, or download and install Linux. Problem solved, sans cost.
- codykm, on 12/02/2008, -4/+16Because then Apple would have to support all the different computer components that are the PC market.
The reason you always hear about Mac OSX's reliability is due to the fact that they have control over the hardware which means that both Apple and other developers can optimize their software to work perfectly on these setups rather then spending time making sure the software runs well on all different system configurations. - nbluth, on 12/02/2008, -4/+16There is no way that anyone can argue that Macs are comparable in a price to specification way.
Lenovo t500:
2.53Ghz
4GB DDR3
320GB HDD
15.4" LED screen
ATI Radeon 3650 512MB + integrated
$1649
Apple MacBook Pro
2.53 Ghz
4GB DDR3
320GB HDD
15.4" LED Screen
Nvidia 9600 GT 512MB + integrated
$2499
A difference of $850 on the exact same machine, infact the ati graphics card is actually a shade better.
Apples are more expensive end of story. - DjOverEZ, on 12/02/2008, -1/+12AKA, your house...
- saikyan, on 12/02/2008, -1/+12Sane people don't bother to "hate" a computer company.
- mynameistux, on 12/02/2008, -0/+11this is so our year, again.
- vtnerd, on 12/02/2008, -10/+20He never said which MacBook (2.4GHz starts at $1599) or what specs the computer has that he did buy.
If he got a 2.4GHz with 4GB of RAM it would cost $1749. A bigger HDD adds even more Apple tax to the price. You can buy a lot of computer for $749+ if you know what you're doing as long as it's not made by Apple. - Balanced, on 12/01/2008, -1/+11The product line is Mac, the company is Apple.
- Xihix, on 12/01/2008, -9/+19Jesus Christ you're stupid.
- theblackgecko, on 12/01/2008, -9/+18Actually, based on population, it is more like the US versus Canada. One is an evil monopolistic entity that everyone hates and refuses to get along with others, and the other is Canada.
- kelly, on 12/02/2008, -4/+13I don't know why you got dugg down. You're absolutely right.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -6/+15The problem is, the Macs have the exact same hardware, or often inferior hardware, and the OS isn't worth it. An Apple computer is never luxurious compared to a Dell or an HP.
- ghaltmann, on 12/01/2008, -5/+148% guys You're doing it!!!
/Windows fan - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -1/+10*Ahem* since we're rounding, it would be NINE percent, thank you.
Regardless, it's quite obvious that Apple is poised to surpass Microsoft VERY soon.
/sarcasm - BlackJackJester, on 12/01/2008, -11/+19except a ferrari is a supercar, and a mac is just another flavor of computer. The better comparison is a Camry versus an Accord, but the Accord costs $5000 more.
- specialK16, on 12/01/2008, -2/+10Simpsons sure told you.
- Gizza, on 12/02/2008, -2/+10Because Apple make their money from the hardware not the software. They used the software to sell the hardware, not the other way around. If they allowed OSX to be installed on any PC nobody would bother to fork out the extra cash for Apple hardware and their main source of revenue would dry up.
- rgersmrk, on 12/02/2008, -7/+15The car comparison is the lamest example any Mac person can give. The last time I checked Vista laptops use the same exact Intel chips as the Apple laptops. Shiny paint doesn't justify that kind of markup.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8lol @ the car argument again. you forgot the mention that the cars have different components compared to mac and pcs which share the same components.
A correct analogy would be taking a Honda, slapping on a BMW badge and selling it for double the price. - deadbaby, on 12/02/2008, -2/+10I think when people grow up and get a good paying job they would have an easier time understanding why people are happy to pay extra for a product they want. I like OSX, I like the design of the Macs. I'm completely willing to spend more. A $200, $400, even $500 difference doesn't mean a whole lot over the lifetime of a computer. I spent $1200 on a Macbook in early 2005 and I recently sold it for $400. If I spent $200 more for it at the time, what do I care? It was a great machine and it cost me a whopping $800 in the end. For a machine I used for 3.5 years probably 4 hours a day.
I understand some people are on tight budgets but it's no reason to be jealous or judgmental. If someone has the money and wants to spend a slight premium on a premium product how does it hurt you? - scotishstriker, on 12/02/2008, -0/+8Playstation .04%?
- tanmaker, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9This is one of the worst possible articles for a pedobear.
- timf, on 12/02/2008, -2/+9@InoragnicMatter
Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE? It's really hard to guess
Or it's Mac OS, but then again, why would you update your graphics drivers when you can't upgrade your graphics card? - robdazomba, on 12/02/2008, -2/+9Yeah, 90% of the market buy Windows PCs and yet it's the Mac users who are the sheep.
How's that cognitive dissonance working out for you, dumb-ass? - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -2/+9Dell and Acer don't have to innovate, they just assemble components. It's the component manufacturers who do all the innovation.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -9/+16Cite your sources for the $1,000 figure, or you are full of *****. And buying memory/hard drives from Apple doesn't count, since only a retard would do that.
