- schroeder, on 11/05/2007, -23/+338I don't know why this is news. Because he works at an Apple store? Many people have lived in their cars. Jewel (the singer) lived in her car when she was starting out. I'm sure many other people have also. I even lived in my van for for 3 months and off and on for weeks at a time a while after...but I was out of work at the time and had to. I found the best way to avoid getting a ticket is to park at rest stops (most people sleep there visibly without trouble and they have restrooms) on the toll highways and if you're in the back of a van with no side windows it's easy not to be seen. The Super Walmart stores actually allow people with campers (the vehicles, not people in tents) and truckers to sleep in the lots and they are 24 hour stores. Then just wash up at a Dunkin' Donuts (they have single person restrooms with locks).
- esoteric0, on 10/12/2007, -30/+243the guy's a loser. $10k in credit card debt? and saving for a road trip? his priorities are obviously all screwed up. sometimes, in the real world, you have to take care of your responsibilities instead of doing what you _want_ to do (road trip, in this case).
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -13/+135Yes, we know that the fact that he works as an Apple Genius means nothing to the article. But if you've ever read the unwritten rules of Digg, you'd know that taking any kind of article and spinning it to an Apple related story, or focusing on completely unimportant parts that happen to relate to Apple, then putting it in the Apple section = instant front-page story.
- Geister, on 11/05/2007, -7/+122IN A VAAAAAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+105Okay, I just RTFA, and the kid is a pretentious snot (most likely from a well off family) who is doing this "for fun." ***** him! I *HAD* to live out of my car to survive...not just because it would be some kind of "adventure."
What an ass. - austindkelly, on 10/12/2007, -21/+100Yeah this does not qualify as news to me. There are only a few hundred thousand homeless people where I live, but I guess because they do not work at Apple they dont get coverage, or food, or a truck to sleep in.
- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -6/+72@jiub, you are correct. I think the point is why is this filed under News » Technology » Apple ? This should be on offbeat news...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -9/+62Just because Apple calls their tech monkeys geniuses doesn't mean they have an IQ over 100.
- thcobbs, on 11/05/2007, -1/+52Tommy: "But, A lot of people go to college for seven years...."
Richard: "I know; they're called doctors." - nrfx, on 10/12/2007, -14/+56Small price to pay for a MacBook.
- qpid, on 10/12/2007, -17/+54http://gotruckyourself.blogspot.com/
- bootle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40"After a long day of film classes, working at the Apple Store, rock climbing at the gym and finishing homework in the student union"
I officially have zero sympathy for the guy - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40"Many people have lived in their cars."
Bingo! Hell, I lived out of a crappy 86 Nissan Sentra, on the bank of a lake, doing odd jobs around the rural community for 6 months to survive a dry spell. You do what you have to do to survive. - thereisnospoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Comparing this guy to a real homeless person is like comparing a teenage girl in the Midwest on a diet to a starving kid in Africa...
"I can understand what people are going through."
Yeah right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Dam a decade in college!? jeez.
- goldfenix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37Just because somebody is a genius with computers does not imply they are a genius with money.
Look at Captain Crunch (the Hacker, not the cereal) for proof of that. His story is MUCH more interesting than this guy's. - pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41I think living a fun life is far more important than caring what people on the Internet think of you.. my .02c
- unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -10/+42Because he works on Mac's, of course.
For a system that is supposed to be easy for an idiot to use, it was always curious to me that it took a genius to fix them. - JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Living in a truck=No girlfriend
- Jpantoga, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32He could have a good breakfast by frying eggs on top of his macbook pro...
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -68/+95Did you even read the artical? It barely mentions the fact that he works in an apple store. The whole thing focuses on the experience he's had.
- jesscott98, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Exactly, he claims he can do anything he sets his mind to, yet accumulates credit card debt that out strips him of the ability to live in a domicile like a normal human being. Seems like the guy is an opportunist to me.
- markp93, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35im in ur truck fixin ur mac
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27If the title had said "Guy shuns consumerism and lives in car" it would have been more accurate - and certainly never made the front page. It's the "Mac Genius" thing that caused us to look at it.
I expected an article about some literal genius eccentric savant who was a key player in some aspect of Apple operations, not something about some choad who gets paid $20 bux an hour to swap overpriced batteries out of iPods with his non-marring tool. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27This guy seems to be a total moron with money. Seriously.
- hode, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Read his blog. "I have these nice $100 Tempur-Pedic pillows..."
- Kale, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28We're going to be BUDDIES!!! We're going to be PALS!!!
- rmwaite, on 10/12/2007, -14/+34esoteric0:
He is taking care of his responsibilities. He made a decision to live in his truck and managed to both pay off most of his debt AND go on his road trip. - theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Well you'll have plenty of time to live in a van down by the river, when you're... living in a van down by the river!
- S1L3NTC, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24I'm sorry, but this is ***** retarded.
We have homeless people all over this country, and some cumstain near LA who works in an Apple store DECIDES to sleep in his truck because he doesn't want to pay rent after maxing out his credit cards buying overpriced Apple ***** GETS A NEWS ARTICLE WRITTEN ABOUT HIM.
Add this to the list of reasons why I will never live in LA. Talk about a total loss of focus... - dasluvaluva, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18My school loans never appeared on my "credit card." There's cc debt, then there's student loans. They're entirely separate.
- doowop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"College Student lives in truck for more than a year." - 11 Diggs.
"Mac Genius lives in truck for more than a year." -1285 Diggs.
I'm a Mac user, but this is ridiculous. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24$10,000 in credit card debt? lol
- joshua5, on 11/05/2007, -4/+19to set the record straight it is not fashionable or cool to live in your car.
- PuffyC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What I've found is that the people with the most money seem the most frugal, and vice versa. I think that a lot of rich people are rich because they don't buy BMWs, McMansions, $100 jeans or go on 3 month road trips - instead they spend and invest their money wisely. It's largely the less well-to-do who find it considerably more important to APPEAR well off by buying fancy cars and fancy clothes, and this also keeps them poor, as does poor decisions like this dork is making.
- darny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"...and to deal with the latter, he takes advantage of public facilities. On occasion, he has resorted to employing an empty Gatorade bottle."
Who hasn't??!!?? - viet10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Who cares? People are worse off. At least he has a job.
- dilpil1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16You... paid for your tuition by racking up credit card debt? Oh my...
- The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19"They got a name for that Jules and it's called a bum".
Eccentric guy for sure. Wonder if his c.c. debt is due to an addiction to expensive Mac hardware. - Trams, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Chris Farley - "Livin in a van down by the river!!!" video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIll-rZINsY - cnowacek, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19I guess he's not much of a genius...
- cheesegrits, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Had a Big Mac that lived in my car for a year.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -25/+36@esoteric
I couldn't have said it better myself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Chris Farely you are missed dearly. R.I.P.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18That's the guy's official blog...not spam. No reason to Digg him down, his blog gives more detail on the story.
- danjal, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17i hate to be insensitve, but this guy needs to have his priority set... for example, drop the road trip
- adragontattoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15so am I a genius for living in my truck for a couple months and figuring out that it was cheaper then rent and utilities?
- Essefgy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I guess everyone bitching about the guy's priorities didn't notice this part of the article: "The credit card debt, which was part of the reason for his decision to live in a vehicle, is nearly paid off."
- DirtyBrowncoat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I interviewed at the Apple Store location once. I actually owned my cars, paid all my credit cards in full, and never missed a rent payment. I guess that's why they didn't hire me :)
- sifeliz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Well loddy-freakin'-dah! We got ourselves a camper here! Hey, Dad, I can't see too good is that Davey Crockett over there?

What is Digg?
