Woz FTW!! - CCB0x45, on 08/28/2008, -1/+23As a mac programmer, I think you are an idiot... I use linux, windows exclusively before I used a mac, freebsd, and I think macs are great for computer literate people. You have a full unix command line, and features like expose and spaces which are very well done and worked into the OS fully(where their linux counterparts have always had nuances because of the small differences that create annoyances) it has increased my productivity on the computer by a huge margin. The standardized keyboard shortcuts that are all through the OS and apps make "computer litterate" people barely ever need to touch the mouse.
So ***** off moron. - MrSkills, on 08/28/2008, -0/+19The fact that Jobs was non-technical was probably a very important factor. He was pushing the project from the perspective of an end user, not an engineer.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+18Despite rampant fanboyism or hate for Apple, you really do have to appreciate the engineering awesomeness of their products.
- rbedi100, on 08/27/2008, -1/+19Classic Jobs. But he knew what he was doing.
- theadvinci, on 08/28/2008, -0/+14Have you seen pirates of silicon valley?
You should! - PabloMac, on 08/28/2008, -0/+11Hey, a letter from the future!
- Zippo, on 08/28/2008, -0/+9Jobs never claimed to be the tech. He's visionary and the business man.
Woz made a computer for a laugh. Jobs took Woz's genius and turned into a multi-billion-dollar corporation.
Jobs was the ying to Woz's yang. - WestonP, on 08/28/2008, -2/+10Great story. No matter if you like Apple or not, they've created a lot of what we see in modern desktop OS'es.
- pault107, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7Troll. Check his comment history:

This is the same guy that was all over Digg yesterday and got banned. He spreads his vile filth looking for a response. But he's a bit more dangerous than that - DO NOT CLICK ON ANY OF HIS LINKS. Some lead to a virus, some lead to browser hijacks. Just report him and move on. - pstroll, on 08/28/2008, -2/+9Steve is a people programmer and that is better than being a code monkey.
- DiscoLando, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7If you haven't picked up a copy of Andy's book, Revolution in the Valley, do so. It's a great snapshot of the Apple/Mac culture of the time.
Also, Andy's site with similar anecdotes is just as invaluable. http://www.folklore.org - mishaneah, on 08/28/2008, -2/+9Dugg for showing that regardless of your computer's color, creed, or OS. We got to this point because of brilliant engineers working through maddening constraints.
- Diggnabbit, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Well, compared to OSX, that's true. But at the time, OS 7 was awesome.
- WestonP, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Folklore.org is an excellent site. I've really enjoyed reading the stories there over the past few years. They did some really impressive and cutting edge things for their time. Although they obviously got a few basic ideas from Xerox/PARC, what they actually created for the Mac went far beyond what anyone else had at the time. Then Microsoft came and copied all of those innovations and tried to pretend that they just got it from Xerox/PARC, even though they hadn't even thought of several of the things that Apple created and M$ copied.
- bjstiktrix, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5True. Woz is the man...
- bizzywho, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Well, but then again what IS computer literacy? The average computer user, whether it be Mac or Windows, are probably on the same level in respect to their own operating system. Don't you think?
I just feel it's useless to say that Mac users are computer illiterate when I see most Windows users being on the same level, just on a different operating system.
Also, I do not think computers, let alone their operating system, should be complex at all. They should be as simple as possible. Apple has done that and if a Windows or Linux user wants to accuse Apple of creating a "too simple" operating system, then bravo to Apple, because that's what they wanted and that's what the world needs! - Raptor007, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Yep, I found folklore.org to be fascinating, and thus also picked up the book.
- saikyan, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4I work in IT. I use both Mac OS and Windows extensively and routinely. Most people I come across in this field don't harbor the kind scorn that anti-Mac (and, for that matter, anti-Windows) diggers have. They are machines, tools, and there is no reason to attach your ego to them.
- Smulse, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4So Woz wozn't the man?
- MattB123, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Ah, but they can also be a "gateway computer" like they say pot is a gateway drug (which I personally think is BS, but that's for another thread). When I was in 7th grade in1984 we got an original 128k, 400kb floppy driven Mac like the one in the picture. That started what has become a long career in IT for me, but now I'm primarily a Wintel guy because that's what most of the world runs on.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Needs more cowbell!
- NathanCH, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Needs more pics
- spritom, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3While I haven't had an Apple since the 80's and have been using the Micro$oft/Linux platforms, I agree wholeheartedly that Apple has done some amazing things for the industry.
er....but don't tell any of my Apple-headed friends I said that. - Laminarcissus, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4rot13? Outside sites with a mouseover? The punchline is:
"The Boy Scouts have adult supervision."
Sheesh. - kreatre2007, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Woz had almost no involvement in the Mac project. He left Apple before it shipped.
- serif69, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3That was the first movie I put on my iPod video back when it first came out.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3So if you have an eye and subtract the candy you get Linux?
- Rudegar, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3well gates only ever did gw-basic
so being more business then nerding around is not
really shocking for jobs - diggan8, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3He's a manager.
- ilikechaitea, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2dude, awesome movie that really should be remade for the big screen.
There's that great bit when Steve invites Bill to Apple HQ after Bill pirates Apple.....and then, after an argument, as Bill is leaving Steve just says something like:
"but our product is better" or something, and Bill just replies
"its not about who's better"....genius, I wish I had the script but I couldn't find it online... - falafelkiosken, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Mac OS is a very easy OS to use, yes, a newcomer can learn to use the basic functions very easy. Yet there are a lot more, like the BSD/unix foundation which makes it work perfectly together with other unix bases systems
- stevemclintock, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Same...was one of the first movie's I played as well :-D
They should make a sequel though, it's gutting how the film ends basically saying how much better Microsoft became. If another movie came along, it should at least document the return of Steve & the iMac, as essentially that's what the first one was all about. - mrBitch, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2Zing!
- MacParrot, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2B1663r's real name is Doc Brown
- SouthsideIrish, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2But Bill Gates was a coder. He may not have written anything after GW-Basic, but he read a lot of code afterwards, and if he didn't like it, then you were in trouble. You should go and listen to the TWiT podcast about Bill. If you don't respect the man now, you will after listening to it.
- redwallhp, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Mirror?
- freezejeans, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Awesome movie, definitely worth seeing if you're interested in the history of Mac/Windows wars. Wyle and Hall were terrific in their roles..."I GOT THE LOOT, STEVE!" line during the "Big Brother" Mac ad from 1984 was classic. Also loved how the Apple guys went berzerk after seeing the Xerox PARC GUI demonstration.
- Carbamide, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Your reply made me think of the writing style of the Dinosaur comics.
- theadvinci, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I will not reply to this!
- Raptor007, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Uh, yeah, his name is "HeilHItler". Of course he's a troll.
- mrBitch, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1RE: " .. I agree wholeheartedly that Apple has done some amazing things for the industry.
er....but don't tell any of my Apple-headed friends I said that. "
Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. - mrBitch, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1that is the beauty of the design - OS X is an easy OS to pick up, but the more you peel back and the more you get into the guts of the OS, the more power is revealed.
- pyrates, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Biggest reason why the mac is the way it is now:
JT: The Mac came out a time when the future of desktop computing was really up for grabs; there were a lot of players like Radio Shack and Commodore and people like that coming into the market or in the market already. What factors do you think ended up giving the numerical edge to the X86 platforms?
AH: It was probably the decision to openly license it. When the Mac came out and for two years thereafter it was at least four or five years ahead of Windows and possibly could have taken the place of Windows if it was openly licensed, but because the Macintosh was restricted to a single member, Apple, it never could become an industry rather than a single platform. Of course it was an industry because it had third-party developers, but it couldn't become mainstreamed restricted to a single vendor. That's the single biggest factor but there are probably other factors as well having to do with the sensibility of the designers and the willingness to meet the requirements of the enterprise versus the requirements of the consumer. Ours were more with the consumer I think; Apple has always been that way. - mrBitch, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1@CCB0x45 : " to me IT people aren't even very computer *literate. "
- there, fixed that for you.
(oh, the irony of having to assist you with the word "literate") - spritom, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1"You're stealing from me!"
- MacParrot, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Yes, yes you do suck. Nice of you to pick up on that so quickly RG!
- CCB0x45, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Who gives a ***** about the stats? Ill also look at the stats and most local tech support people are complete idiots, I am a developer, and I have used each of them extensively.. to me IT people aren't even very computer litterate. The stats dont mean that one is more for computer litterate people, that moron said its condom protecting you from computer litteracy, and I'm saying it is very nice for people who are computer litterate, make a point about what is wrong with the operating system not "what your local tech support guy" uses.
- MacParrot, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Have your mommy put out an extra cookie tonight with your warm milk. That should do it and good luck!
