- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Will boot times get worse as you install things on it? Not a flame, just trying to understand if Apples suffer from this too...
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I think what's more impressive is that it plays 1080p at full framerate.
- spazzium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+123 test Average for PPC comes to 56 seconds with a clean install.
- thereisnospoon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12According to apple it is only a 5,400 RPM drive.

It doesn't say about the 100 or 120GB drives exactly but when I get my new MacMini next week I will find out! :) - captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15In almost all cases, no, the startup time doesn't suffer as you install more programs. Mac applications are usually bundled in such a way that nothing is added to the computer's boot process. And there's no "system tray" to fill up with every company's auto-update garbage and the like.
- Teckla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Back in the day, my Commodore 64 used to boot in under two seconds. :-)
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Just like Windows, it depends on what programs run at start-up.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Somebody has to wait 45 seconds to boot their G5 Mac Mini? My God...I am pretty sure my mom's Pentium III that is loaded down with every system tray spamware known to man boots faster than that.
It is appalling to hear that Mac people put up with these times as normal. Unbelievable you people are so tethered to a company that you don't even look out the window to see the options that surround you. - mojofrojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm with you on waiting. I was going to upgrade my mini to the new core solo, But the more I look at it there dosent seem to be a valid reason to do it. It just does not have anything new that I'm drooling over.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6my DOS prompt boots in 4 seconds, beat that :P
- dgath, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Why is 25 seconds stunning? A fresh install of XP on standard new hardware nowadays is about 15-20 seconds.
- yost, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Is 25.8 a good or bad thing, some one tell me?
- spazzium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I've loaded mine with lots of software and boot times are unchanged. Mine averages 26 seconds to useable desktop.
I'm surprised by the amount of universal softare already available. Regular desktop effects are faster. Color is not quite as rich as 9200 on the G4 version, but one can only tell side by side. Also the extra horse power really shows, I've yet to get the fan running on this while web browsing. G4 used to spin up the fan for youtube videos, google video, and and even some flash ads. Sell your old G4 and it'll finance most of this very enjoyable upgrade. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The shared ram would be a turn off for me.
- stronger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Overhyped. My BeOS system booted in 9-11 seconds. It was 6 years ago on dual Celeron 433 with 256 megs and 5400 rpm hdd. So I kindly request you, Apple-hypers, to get a life.
- harmpitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2these boots are made for talkin'
and that's what fanboys do
one of these days your mac will finally not run like slow poop
some blonde bombshell wannabe sings this song on a pizza commercial i think - jabba, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Yeah, you are right it's OK to compare 6 year old OS (XP), with the 1 year old OS (Tiger). I wonder how Vista is going to boot on your machine.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah. i'm running 10.4.4 on an IBM T30 (1GB ram, 2.0GHz P4m) i dont get the apple sound, thats a bios type thing, but my times are approx.
apple logo 10 secs
mac osx 27.5 secs
ready to use 32 secs
thats from when i pressed the power button. i would be a bit less if i wasnt using grub and turned off the option startup for mac, i could maybe shave off 5 secs. 10.4.3, the developer version took like 2 mins to boot. thats the main reason i upgraded. so now i can go from windows to os x in 50 seconds. - Fish, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8nice, I really want one of these for media center use only...now I just need the money for it and a HDTV :/
- TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um I get a 30secondish boot time on Windows XP Pro.... From blank to everything..
512mb ram DRR 400
Amd Sempron 64 3400+(754)
eVGA 6600GT AGP8x 128mb
IDE 100 80GB 7200RPM HDD...
ECS nForce-A....
So yeh I have crappy parts but I boot up just as quick :-/ - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7this is a moot point. the only time you boot a mac is after you upgrade the OS.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5heh, TIVO's take like 10 minutes to boot. If your computer boots as slow as a TIVO, I think it's time for you to upgrade :P
- veracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait, is this fast?
My 533 Celeron boots Ubuntu in less than 20 seconds, usually. - ntrsfrml, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7BAH! every article on these new Mini's is talking how fast they are.. blah blah.. WHAT about the core solo mini? not a single review or discussion thread about it.. Don't compare the DUO w/ windows pc, cpu, IBM laptop.. It has a dual core processor.. obviously its goin to do stuff faster than others.. what about the core solo??!?!
- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That's Nice...
My 3 Year Old HP 17" Laptop boots in 22.5 seconds.
Ain't technology great? - Trekkie711, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5O ya? my 1 year old windows box can boot in under 10 sec! up yours mac
- bbgeekboy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10Nice post. I'm still on the fence about buying one.
- graemee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I installed OSX 10.3 on a HP DC7600, Intel motherboard with TPM and the same video as the mini. It boots in 15 seconds. That's with no optimizations just a plain install. The 3.2 GHz CPU is faster than the minis. Still pretty fast. What I liked was the 6 second shutdowns.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12Im still staying with PPC until i really have to move to intel, macbook/ibook, which maybe in 2 years time, maybe more
- Vortech89, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Honestly, this is an amazing feat over the G5 Mac Mini boot time. I'll definitely have to pick one of these up at the Apple store. :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I too am curious about this. Please respond if you know.
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Whoa!!! another apple post! and a link to a blog?!!
Crazy!! What are the chances? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok guys help me out here, Im highly considering purchasing a mac mini duo because I like to take pictures in my spare time and when I load high res pics on my 3.2 gig pent 4 hp the fans cry for mercy. And my desktop which is a 3.2 also begs for mercy. Will the Mac Mini outperform my windows PC for pictures? Is 512 mb enough ram for 8 megapixel pictures? Windows PC are good for everyday stuff but I want a computer that I can work on my pictures smoothly. e mail me with opinions: mario.zugasti@gmail. Thanks.
- jamba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I can boot into XP in about that time. Oh, one little caveat. Don't try to DO anything in Windows for the next minute or so.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I built my computer in 2001; it's boots to login screen in less then that I'm sure.
It's not the Macs I hate; it's the Mac users. - stosh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Hmm..I don't think this should be news...not until the mini can boot in less than one second anyway.
- Thud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I assume you're using the analog VGA adapter?
The color should be *identical* coming out of both if you're using the DVI hookup. If it's not, perhaps you need to go through the monitor calibration. - MinnesotaTwins, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I got my intel Mini duo core last night and mine boots right around the same time frame. Another cool feature to note is that you hold down play on the remote and the mini goes to sleep. Press play again and it wakes up in under 4 seconds. Very cool feature.
- Jimmycar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8There never was a G5 Mini, only a G4. Great startup time though... Faster than my Tivo, and way faster than my other 2 Macs. Nice article.
http://www.humanbeingcurious.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5i have a 486 toshiba laptop(i have no idea how fast the cpu is, could be a 75mhz?) that can boot windows 3.11 in less than 20 seconds. but 3.11 is jus a gui for dos, doesnt count, lol. its not a bad machine, runs spreadsheets so fast! lol
- thekiller111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice
- iopred, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Windows XP doesn't actually completely load when you hit the login screen, many things are still loading in the background. This is why on a fast computer you will hit your desktop and be able to run programs MUCH faster than a slower one, where you will be waiting between the login screen and the desktop for a long time.
- oboreruhito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+325 seconds is spectacular... spectacularly normal.
A little question to wonder about, though - anyone thought about sticking a SATA Flash disk in one of these for the OS? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We've seen the options, and we like what we already have
- Incense, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll Digg this story, simply because I think it's cool a story about the boot time of a Mac could make it onto Digg with over 800 diggs. Nice! BTW my Macintosh Classic II from 1990 or so, boots in about 10 seconds. Same with my old 286 loading DOS.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2it's not very spectacular.... for a brand new (as in freshly installed) operating system on a fast processor... my iBook boots up in 30 secs, and that's with my HD 50% full...
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2For playing games it's not the best for sure. But if you can play 1080p video without dropping frames, then the video card is Good Enough. At least if you intend to hook it to a TV and use it as a media center.
It just means the base 512k is a little less ufficient than it used to be, I'd say 1GB on this thing is mandatory. - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Yes, it is a terrible idea. As I experience on Slashdot firsthand, reading threaded comments where some comments are not visible is not pleasant.
Getting back on topic, those of you who brag about your XP boot times should realize that if you try starting a program as soon as you see the desktop, you'll have to wait another good 20 seconds before it actually starts. I notice this each time I use XP and it does irk me so. - 0satan0, on 05/30/2008, -0/+0***** alll you mac users,
macs are pieces of *****,
my cousin is into macs and i ***** hate him for liking the ***** gay ***** piece of ***** operating systems!
go get a life,
