- ridestp, on 12/13/2008, -18/+44***** Apple. There shouldn't be a need for stupid adapters like this. Just use a standard everyone else uses!
- suntzusputnik, on 12/13/2008, -9/+33they should have had an hdmi port instead of a mini displayport to begin with
- DrLeePhD, on 12/13/2008, -4/+24only a hundred bucks, usb-powered.
sounds like a bargain. - knute5, on 12/13/2008, -1/+18Erm, the standard is open. China can make these cables for $1 if they want.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+16If you need an adapter then it isn't 'directly' you moron
- c010rb1indusa, on 12/13/2008, -2/+16I know its a bit elaborate, but couldn't the HDMI- mini display port problem be easily solved by a DVI to HDMI chord... there $9 on monoprice. Sure it's a little inconvenient but just keep the two connectors attached and pretend their the same cable who gives a *****?
- CoreyTamas, on 12/13/2008, -0/+9Pedobear as a comment on Apple display connectors?
Does that even make sense to anyone? Or is this guy just really dying to get it off his clipboard? - toetagger, on 12/13/2008, -2/+11http://www.engadget.com/media/2007/04/displayport- ...
Here is a pic of the FULL SIZED DisplayPort - which carries video, audio, and is HDCP compliant. It's not large. But Apple just had to make it smaller, leave out the audio, and complicate the whole thing by making it not compatible with any other product on the planet. Use the expensive adapter to hook the MacBook to your HDTV and they'll be NO audio. Sweet! - Rikkochet, on 12/13/2008, -6/+14Why use someone else's standard when you can just MAKE ONE UP?
- dickrichie, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9Display port actually has a higher resolution output then HDMI. HDMI cant even run a display with 2560 x 1600 resolution. So your one year old HDMI PC is nothing more than an out put that max's out just over 1080P which is great if you only want to watch Hd movies but sucks if you actually want to make or edit one. Not to mention work with RAW images.
- ElectricKetchup, on 12/13/2008, -2/+9HDMI can't do things like pass USB or microphone signals.
Display Port is better.
Though it would be nice if they had both since right now more people have HDMI devices than DisplayPort devices, but Apple likes to be aggressive with their standard pushing. - chicagojack, on 12/12/2008, -4/+11about time :)
- DrLeePhD, on 12/13/2008, -1/+8Pedobear likes his women like he likes his whiskey....
Twelve years old and mixed-up with coke. - x713, on 12/13/2008, -6/+12I am starting to feel stupid with apple pulling all this ***** with their overprices computers. I guess I should have known since they always try to get the most money out of people. They should be offering this ***** for free for not putting it in the first place. For the price of the computer, it should have been included.
Edit --- buried for being typical apple ***** - DrLeePhD, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6edit::: /s
- Klisk, on 12/13/2008, -5/+10So when can we get firewire back? Then I'll rejoice.
- tnoy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5At work, its always the people with the MacBook Pro that are scrounging for an adapter to connect to the projector at a meeting.
Most of the PC users at work are using Thinkpads right now, which just have a VGA connector. Sure, it sucks compared to a digital signal, but the vast majority of the time I'm using the VGA connector, its connected to a projector. Sometimes there isn't much of a reason for the superior connection. - ElectricKetchup, on 12/13/2008, -4/+9They did use a standard. It's just not common yet.
- kf6zql, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5Clearly you don't work at a large company. 90% of the projectors in offices are VGA only, I will get the VGA adapter FIRST and everything later, maybe. VGA is the first priority if you are giving presentations.
- catachip, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5I don't really understand the need for this. I have the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, then I plug that into a DVI to HDMI cable. Total = 2 components. If I had a mini-DVI to HDMI cable, I would still have 2 components. I don't really see what I'm saving here. And the DVI to HDMI and the HDMI cables are about the same price anyways.
Seems like a non issue. - fierylungs, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5Pssst, the new macbooks don't have FW.
- Rikkochet, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5cord. they're. they're.
That's what I do, but why should I have to? Why would Apple make an Mini DP to VGA connector and not to HDMI? Given how Apple is prone to jumping onto the latest technology, why cling to VGA? There aren't even any VGA-only displays on the market anymore. - toetagger, on 12/13/2008, -5/+9The miniDisplayPort -- unlike the standard sized DisplayPort -- does not carry the audio stream. The full sized one is only a little bigger - Apple should've used that and avoided this nonsense.
- CoreyTamas, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Ask Sony.
- Kelmon, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3"Do you miss the floppy?"
Back to this again, huh? Small point, but do you recall what the floppy disk was replaced by and how much better it was? Do you know what Firewire has been replaced with on the MacBook? Yes, it's absolutely nothing. Now, instead of 2 USB ports and a Firewire 400 port you simply have the 2 USB ports. So much for an upgrade... - srg13, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3But then they would need to make three different types of motherboards, and three different casings for every single laptop - which would drive prices up a huge amount. And it's not like there would be any difference in weight - it would still have the same graphics card and everything, and an almost identical motherboard, just one less port (which would hardly weigh a few grams). And there'd be more metal on the side of your laptop then as well, so it would be very slightly heavier.
- Callidus, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3That's currently how I hook up my MacBook to my HDTV, MiniDisplay Port to DVI, and DVI to HDMI cable.
However, one thing that greatly annoys me is the missing Overscan option under Displays, I've started a support thread on this and have had no proper answers, my last generation MacBook had the Overscan option show up when I'd connect the MiniDVI to DVI, and DVI to HDMI cable to my HDTV, so why would it be missing on newer technology?
I'd fork out the money for this new adapter if it somehow solves the problem, but still, ridiculous that I should have to for what worked on the prior iteration. - MrJagil, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3that was probably one of the worst pedobear uses ever...
- ncraig, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4The cheapest Mini DisplayPort-DVI adapter (according to Google) right now is $27. Apple has just recently opened up the rights to develop for the Mini DisplayPort to other companies. With the Mini DisplayPort-HDMI adapter being developed by (according to the article) Monoprice and not Apple, it will most likely be a much cheaper (not in quality) product, so that paired with one of their excellent HDMI cords makes for an excellent setup.
- noghead, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2key word: "buy" I don't want to "buy" anything extra. It should have a dvi or hdmi port standard.
- Frozo, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2It's all about size, people.
- VivaLaUndead, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2so will i still have to run a separate audio wire?
- Eminemdrdre00, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Monoprice FTW!
- TheKorn2, on 12/13/2008, -1/+3It makes a modicum of sense because most computer monitors still use the DVI connector. (That's changing, but sloooooooowwwwwwwwlllllllllyyyyyyy.)
When you get down to it, there's really little reason to use the HDMI connector outside of size & dropping analog support. But using DisplayPort was just braindead on apple's part, let alone mini-DP. ("Here's a solution to a problem nobody has!") - dagamer34, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Mini-DisplayPort doesn't carry audio? WTF APPLE?
- catachip, on 12/13/2008, -2/+4What are you talking about? Display Port to DVI, etc. cost like $25. It's only the high end Display Port to Dual-Link DVI that is expensive. And if you have two 30" displays, I don't think you're having an issue with money.
- P5ycHo, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Really? Enrich us please.....
- Kelmon, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2Yes, but then you'd have bought a Dell.
*shudders*
Sorry, I've used enough of their products to know that I don't want to spend my own money on them. - dandonia, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2@TheKorn2
Some people, (myself included) like to get sound without another cable. That's why it makes sense to use HDMI. - ridestp, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2You are WRONG! They used a standard format (Display Port) but Apple made their own physical plug. Therefore, if you want to use it with anything other than their $900 monitor, you have to buy an adapter from Apple.
- srg13, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1"At the very least it should be a removable option which deducts price from your machine rather than us paying for something we won't use.."
It's not going to make any difference at all - it would still have exactly the same graphics card - the only difference would be the one less port, which probably costs less than two or three dollars to manufacture. Then there is probably a few tenths of a cent of solder that connects it to the motherboard. All together, it would probably cost about the same as the extra aluminium that would replace it...
And how does not having the port make you any more productive? That's just ridiculous. - eatrains, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1The mini DisplayPort standard does not leave out audio. It has the same number of pins as DisplayPort and fully supports the DisplayPort standard. It's just smaller.
- Klisk, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1Nevermind that USB2.0 has horrible latency compared to FW... So for all us musicians using firewire interfaces. (Which is an industry standard, mind you, and isn't going to change any time soon since USB2.0 doesn't cut it...) We, basically, are screwed. Especially those of us that are Logic Pro users opposed to ProTools. So we either go whitebook, or we don't get any 13.3" goodness.
- sinembarg0, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1@catachip
Or you need one dual link DVI adpater to drive one 30 inch display at full resolution. No current Apple laptop can drive 2 30" displays at native res. - supermanred, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1You can buy an adapter to hook it up to VGA, DV-I, Component RCA cables and HDMI.
- evangelion01, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1monoprice will probably have it for 5.
- carbonfilament, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1I don't understand Apple dropping FW. Its screwing all of us and forcing us to use inferior USB, if we can even find interfaces that have USB ports on them...
- sfacets, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Yes, but Apple has been doing this for years now.
- eatrains, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1MonoPrice makes $100 adapters? I've always thought them to be pretty inexpensive...
- Klisk, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1Gross. The whole point is that I'm a Logic Pro user, which is pretty useless without firewire.
