- Cybrwolf, on 10/20/2009, -20/+110Screw you Apple! Stop taking away my Firewire!
- Thud, on 10/20/2009, -6/+93Screw that macbook.... I want my 27" iMac.
- latin69, on 10/20/2009, -11/+83Xmas is gonna be great for Apple.
- digitalpencil, on 10/20/2009, -2/+59The Macbook is clearly being re-targeted to a purely consumer demographic whilst they reserve firewire functionality for their Pro line..
Probably not an awful decision given that the vast majority of consumers don't have Firewire peripherals, or know what to do with them. i guess it's just simplicity over complication. - BxBoy, on 10/20/2009, -4/+55too late, it's already obsolete.
- Wilddigi, on 10/20/2009, -6/+49If you people don't like Macs, you sure have the time to leave the dumbass comments in Apple's news.
- non00b, on 10/20/2009, -1/+42screw the imac, I just want the screen! 2560*1440 LED backlit IPS screen = insane.
- jdames1980, on 10/20/2009, -1/+39It's a big deal because it's sturdier and won't fall apart. The old Macbooks had a tendency to crack along the seams, unfortunately.
- imodium, on 10/20/2009, -4/+39if you don't like it, then just not buy it. it's that simple. let people be happy with their products.
- Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -5/+35A quarter the price, and a quarter the functionality. Seems a fair trade to me.
- puppyoneb, on 10/20/2009, -1/+30This is one thing Apple excels at:
"You know, instead of a shuffle for a little bit money I could get...
... a Nano but then I may as well get
... an iPod Touch but then I may as well get
... an iPhone!" - Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -6/+32Agreed. 7 hour battery life at $999 is untouchable by any other laptop as far as I'm aware. And the pricing on the new iMacs is pretty phenomenal for what they give you.
- r3zonance, on 10/20/2009, -0/+22Consumer camcorders on sale now (especially the new HD ones) tend to be fully digital (no tapes) and transfer the data off the camera via USB. DV as a format is pretty dead now and the quality isn't that good compared to H.264 anyway.
DV with tapes pretty much required Firewire to sustain the transfer rates for pretty bad video quality. - Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -2/+23Considering the $1999 pricetag, and that a screen like that is probably $1000 at least, it really really is pretty nucking futs... nevermind the i5/i7 inside!
- randall814, on 10/20/2009, -0/+21The target group for this MacBook will not use firewire. That target group is more than likely students that want a Mac on the "cheap" (that is, in comparison with other Mac notebooks). Oh, and those students likely care about their appearance, if you will. Whether anyone likes it or not, people pay for appearances, and electronics are no different than cars, homes, clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. It's a status symbol. It sucks, but that's the way it is.
I personally like the feel and look of OS X even without considering hardware. I enjoyed using it. I edited RAW photos and recorded music with Reason 4, Logic Express, and Garageband with no trouble on the old black MacBook model (2.0GHz/2GB/160GB). When I did basic things (browsing, email, iChat, listening to music, managing connected devices, etc.) I was usually doing them all at the same time. This is something most people using a standard notebook are going to do, especially at the appropriate college age. Netbooks just don't have enough power to do things this way, at least, not in my experiences. Maybe Windows 7 can help change that, and these new dual core Atoms. - MacParrot, on 10/20/2009, -2/+22@get
Wait...so Apple's advertized battery life of 7 is probably 5 but everyone else's advertized battery life of 5 is...5? - Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -1/+21@Zaggy
That's using an ultraportable (read: underpowered) SU-series processor, not a full-fledged C2D. But nice try. - randall814, on 10/20/2009, -2/+20I hate when people look strictly at numbers like these without considering that the operating systems utilize these specs in different ways. Even Vista and 7 use their power differently, and the same can be said for Linux and OS X.
- Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -8/+24"hmmm, you get much better battery life for the average e-mail user out of a netbook"
Really? Show me the netbook that gets more than a 7 hour battery life web browsing.
"i doubt many people are going to try to render 3d animations on their $999 macbook....especially one with as weak of hardware specs as this one has"
Weak? How so?
"who are they catering this laptop to? really? the starbucks junkie who has to show off every apple product he owns for 3 hours before he leaves, thats who."
How about anyone who doesn't want to haul around a 6+ lbs POS laptop with a 1 hour battery life, but still wants to keep more power and functionality than a netbook? Have fun playing a CD or DVD on your netbook without hauling around an external optical drive. Have fun with your Wireless G, 1GB of RAM (lol), 1.6Ghz single core processor (lol), 10" craptastic screen and tiny keyboard... need I say more? Yeah, probably, but no doubt you won't listen anyways because apparently you still think the 3 million macs sold last quarter were all to starbucks junkies. I sell macs for a living, and let me tell you, the majority of buyers are new to mac and just want to get away from the nightmare of Windows to the promise of something that actually works, and actually delivers on its promises. And as a little bonus, it still works as well after 1 year as it did when you bought it. - serif69, on 10/20/2009, -1/+17The 27" actually starts at $1699 with a CoreDuo.
- dchurchill, on 10/20/2009, -3/+18Like a bat out of hell it'll be gone when the morning comes?
- adriaaan, on 10/20/2009, -1/+15In his defense, it wasn't obsolete when he posted.
- Gibletoid, on 10/20/2009, -11/+25Man people are gonna look dumb sitting beside someone in the coffee shop with a more expensive version.
- Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -0/+14Turn a phrase into what?
- Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -3/+17@Getjustin
Actually, Apple's advertised battery life on these notebooks is quite realistic. It's based on constant web browsing at 60% brightness. In one review I read it actually achieved 8 hours on these settings while playing iTunes and doing light (not much flash) web browsing. On heavy web browsing (tons of flash) and still playing iTunes, between 6 and 7 hours. Throw in playing two xvid videos on top of everything and it still achieved between 5 and 6 hours. - RJ0534, on 10/20/2009, -0/+13before "the internets" and these "memes" all you kids have your trousers in a bunch about, there were these things call 'figures of speech' that people used to use... AND you could buy a gallon of milk for a nickel. Those were the days.
- Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -4/+17They are threatened.
- fallingdamage, on 10/20/2009, -2/+15are you implying that Windows 7 is going to be good enough that apple felt it a threat that required a response?
- LuckyASN, on 10/20/2009, -0/+13I'd say cake, but that might be a lie
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/20/2009, -1/+13Your netbook has an LED screen and runs a 64-bit core2 duo with DDR3?
- ModernTenshi, on 10/20/2009, -4/+16Yeah, too bad you can't just order that ***** yourself from Crucial and Newegg for cheaper, pop the base off the laptop, and make the upgrades yourself.
Oh wait . . . . - VitriolAndAngst, on 10/20/2009, -3/+15And you can get a Ford Taurus for a lot less than a Mercedes -- that's more than your 33% savings.
Enjoy. - non00b, on 10/20/2009, -5/+16I still use an old powerbook g4 in coffee shops and most people still think it is a new computer
- getoffmybridge, on 10/20/2009, -0/+11takamalak: you'd waste the digg staff's time reporting that comment?
- MtheoryX, on 10/20/2009, -0/+11Yes, it is actually a big deal. You're getting a much studier construction for exactly the same price as the older scratch-prone version.
You service it the same way as the other unibodies in the lineup.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9qsQ1ImOgI - DrDigg, on 10/20/2009, -2/+13Did apple finally make a decent mouse?
- Apolitik, on 10/20/2009, -4/+15Is it just me, or are these new MacBooks _too_ round?
And why does Apple insist on removing firewire at every possible turn. Do they really think their target market doesn't use it anymore? - Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -0/+11The MacBook Pro is the same now.
Apple has stated that the reason they did this was because it makes more room for the battery, thus making it possible to fit a 7 hour battery life into a 13.3" laptop that is still 1" thick and 4.7 lbs. Mechanical access doors waste a lot of room. - Rudegar, on 10/20/2009, -3/+13not the year of blueray it seems
- BossKey, on 10/20/2009, -1/+10Odds are against them. I want to know if you are still required to lift your left finger before the right-click registers, because if that's still true, it's as lame as the Mighty Mouse.
- postalblowfish7, on 10/20/2009, -0/+9Apple mice already suck for gaming. For a visceral experience you really need a plastic clicky mouse you can really bang around IMO.
And yes, don't know if you heard about the whole dual-booting thing, but Mac people have been running Windows for games for a number of years now... - grimacebrown, on 10/20/2009, -5/+14No... you just apparently don't know anything about how to turn a phrase...
- non00b, on 10/20/2009, -0/+9yeah the screws on the bottom panel are just decorations, right?
- Kflo, on 10/20/2009, -5/+14A $1000 laptop without firewire is unacceptable. I keep seeing the argument that it is somehow a "pro" feature, but it simply isn't. How many people do you think will choose a mac thinking they can dabble in recording audio/video if they so choose, only to find out later that they've been hosed and can't use the majority of the audio or video interfaces out there? I'd be screwed if I couldn't use my Presonus FP10 or hook up a standard camcorder.
It's your own standard Apple... what gives? - Wilddigi, on 10/20/2009, -1/+10It's you
- sammio2, on 10/20/2009, -2/+11Shouldn't this title be: Macbook goes unibody... Again?
- T8erT0T, on 10/20/2009, -1/+9If by new you mean B.C, yeah, it's new.
- theOster, on 10/20/2009, -0/+8and meatloaf was making awesome albums
- skingers, on 10/21/2009, -0/+7Actually the 27" does have a mini Display Port input. So when it has finished it's useful life as an iMac it can be the screen for a year 201x Mac Mini or Mac Pro
- Kerrigore, on 10/20/2009, -0/+7What are you talking about? You can still user-upgrade the RAM and HD, I've done it myself (not on my own machine, but on a customer's). It wasn't difficult. I'm talking about the MacBook Pro unibody, but this isn't any different.
