- SweetMercury, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39When a huge part of the product offering is the aesthetic value, then it would make sense to recall products that fail to live up to that standard.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Maybe we could find someone willing to put this sheild on immediatly after purchase, this way oils could be ruled out entirely. Right now, all we know is that they aren't building up on the plastic, what if they're just reacting with it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20as far as i know, black is the darkest color in the spectrum, so yellow/brown/pink stains wouldnt show up on a black product.
of course this is apple we're working with, so i wouldnt be surprised if the black started turning neon vomit orange too - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22i have a crapbook as well, it'd be awesome if it wasnt riddled with problems and defects. just about everything listed onhttp://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=MacBook applies to my macbook.
discoloration, extreme heat, cpu whine, powercord heat and sizzle, moo, case separations, etc etc
apple needs to fix this crap - thejerm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19you mean notebook not laptop
- MoonKing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I think this is an awesome feature, like those cars that used to change color with hot water.
- isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15As a preface to the post, and to answer some of the emails I've received, I did take the time to thoroughly clean the palm rests and trackpad areas before applying the film.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Watch out... saying something bad about Macs is dangerous!
I think theres an X-Files episode about it. - Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13>>I've had my Macbook for almost a month and I don't have any discoloration.
You must not have used your Macbook for porn then. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Well, I can speak to this. Looking into the defective ratio of the MacBook units (units brought back under the return policy or checked in for service during the first year) for a large electronics retailer in Canada (you figure it out) reveals that the MacBook has one of the lowest return ratios out of all of our notebooks. I would conclude from these figures that there aren't rampant problems, just a few vocal people who have issues.
Issues that certainly can and should be solved. - JoelCohen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Untill apple get these things sorted I will not be spending my money on any macbooks yet
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@thejerm:
Yes, by laptop he means notebook and by "late night coding session" he means surfing pornsites. - isdereks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12For the longest time that sizzling sound mystified me during late night coding sessions. I always wondered where the hell it was coming from. It wasn't until I bent down to pick up a piece of paper did I realize that the adapter was singing to me. To this day I keep that thing off carpeted floors in fear that it will burst into flames burning down my house.
- Jayeveryday, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15 I too own a macbook.... while the laptop is great the build quality is sub-par. I think apple users expect excellence and lately apple hasn't been living up to it. My power supply wines, the bottom is steaming hot and the fan moos. Apple I love you but lets get it right
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I believe that if a car model suffered from discoloration, months after being released to the market, a recall would be the right thing to do.
- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I'm sorry, I just have to say this. When you had to return the first notebook you bought because of defects it isn't exactly the "other side of the spectrum".
- ccrook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12My Dell 700M case rubs when its closed causing the silver paint to scrape off around the screen and the LEDs at the bottom of the screen / bottom of the keyboard, the battery ***** out, my backlight burnt out on the screen within a month of having it and keys popped off my keyboard.
- n8agrin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I see your point. I did have a fairly significant issue with my first macbook, which apple replaced for me with no hesitation. That customer service issue became a very positive experience. My experience with my second macbook has only been positive so far, so it is on 'the other side of the spectrum' of the users complaining about issues with their macbooks.
I'm in no way belittling their issues or concerns, just letting people know that there are also very positive experiences with the same product out there. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11It's very hard to tell whether it's widespread.....Usually the only people you hear from are the ones who are having problems. Apple may have sold thousands of Macbooks and only 100 may have discoloration problems, but those are the only people you're going to hear from.
I've had my Macbook for almost a month and I don't have any discoloration. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10maybe the Adhesive from the shield you put on is now causing the yellowing
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11This concerns me as someone who wants to buy a macbook. Is this a widespread problem?
- PSUViking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I tried to get Hanes to recall their size XL white tees because the armpits of mine were turning yellow...no luck.
- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11BUT, its all about the "Apple Experience" *waves hands*
- CMiYC, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15"Where is the product recall?"
Just because you've identified a product issue, doesn't mean Apple has. Even if they have identifed the problem, maybe there isn't a solution yet. You can't have a product recall unless you plan on doing something. What do you want Apple to do, recall your notebook so it can sit in a warehouse for 2 weeks while someone decided how to handle the issue? - quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If it happened to a car, they would have you bring it in so they could paint it again, the same thing will happen with these. A recall is something that happens due to safety Issue and as ugly as it makes the Macbook look, I don't think anyone is going to be killed or seriously injured because of it.
- OrlyonokEaglet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11This wouldn't be the first notebook with discoloration problems, how does that imply recall?
Let me add that the "mooing" that apple says is normal is nothing more than fan noise which is also nothing special. It's funny how all the typical laptop shortcomings are being rediscovered just because it's a Mac... - dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7A recall?
They didn't even extend the warranty on the defective G4 iBook logic boards, so those of us who had them die a month out of warranty were S.O.L.
They didn't recall the defective power bricks, they left those of us who had them fail as well to buy 3rd party ones.
And you think they'd recall because the plastic is turning yellow? Boo hoo, at least your computer works. Wait a year and see if it dies because of a well documented and common logic board failure. Then wonder why Apple isn't doing anything... - Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'll gladly take a free MacBook even if its completely yellow/vomit color.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I would hate to see what happens when these people end up buying a white shirt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I know 3 people with White Macbooks. All of them purchased on the day they came out, and NONE of them have an issue. Personally, I purchased the Black version because I remembered how peoples iBokks looked after about a few months of use.
- djnick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7people want to use their damn laptops and not baby the crap out of them. Sorry let me go wash my hands, find a clean open desk, and find a proper power outlet so my mac can run as advertised. gtfo with that crap
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Guess I have the Anti-Crapbook - A perfect MacBook with no problems. No Mooing, perfect case, silent power supply, warm but not hot to the touch and white as the day she was bought. I suppose we cancel each other out :)
- Jsan2006, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9For some reason people choose to hold Apple products to a higher standard.
It should never get too hot, scratch, discolor, or display any one of the characteristics that all other laptops display at some point. I have used and owned powerbook’s, Thinkpad’s, Vaio’s, and HP laptops, not one of them perfect.
Everything seems to be cause for a recall, ridiculous.
>> Remind me again why Apple is supposed to be so great?
It might be the innovation. They seem to be willing to manufacture products that are different than what is available at the time.
Two reasons that I believe you are hearing more negative stuff about the Macs these days:
There are decidedly anti-Mac people in the world. Perhaps they fear what they don’t understand, or they are so enamored by PC’s that they feel them must choose one over the other. The constant “good news” about Apple offends these people so they make it their business to spread anti-Mac sentiment. These are the same type of people that would have have fists fights over the great “Nintendo vs Genesis” debate when I was growing up.
Macs make a nice focused little target. It seems that you hear disproportionate amounts of horror stories about Macs because there are large numbers of users of a small number of products. I imagine every model of Dell, Sony, and IBM laptop has its own support forum somewhere… - mntpng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7This sort of problems are the reason why there is an unwritten rule about not buying the first revision Apple hardware. You should aways wait for second revision no matter how much you really want it. Even the die hard Apple fans are aware of this rule. The only product that seems to have bucked this trend is the current iMacs. I haven't heard anything about them yet and since it's been out the longest I think it's really the only safe bet at this time if you're shopping for a new mac.
- n8agrin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Just to give a view from the other side of the spectrum:
i have had a macbook for about a month now and have been really happy with it. All the issues that I've been reading about have not cropped up for me. I think once or twice the fans came on unexpectedly, but during general use, it is really quiet, and not very hot. Maybe I just lucked out? I should also note that this is my second macbook, my first I returned because the screen had an awful shade of red to it ( so bad that the mac geniuses and employees at the local apple store agreed to seeing it ), so I guess the second time was the charm.
I also use for work a macbook pro, which is much noisier and hotter than my macbook ( so far ). - SilverRocket, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Hey guess what, the more you use something, the more it looks used.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Clear or blue acetone-free nail varnish remover will return the original white colour partially, if not completely. People over-hype anything to do with an Apple product. No product is perfect. I'd rather have a hot, mooing macbook with a little bit of discoloration over a dell any day. The only reason people get these problems anyways are because they don't know how to take care of their macbooks. They put them on cloth with the vents being blocked and wonder why they're overheating. Then they put their sweaty hands on it and wonder why it's discolored.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's why I have extended (retailer) warranty for all my Macs, though not Apple Care (too pricey and too... Apple "support", you know).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I keep reading about the so-called 'moo' and think to myself that it isn't really a defect.
I base that upon the fact that the Toshiba I'm writing this on now does it, and it is a normal behavior as far as I know. Previously, I also had an HP notebook that did the same thing. Why is it that these things are only defects/problems on Apple notebooks? Hell, my friend's Area 51 'moos', and that's supposed to be one of the better notebooks you can buy.
I suppose I would understand the whole situation better if I had an Apple notebook. Or perhaps I just misunderstood what the 'moo' is. - valour, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How can it be great when you have so many problems with it? I have an IBM ThinkPad T40 and when I say it's "great," I mean I have absolutely no complaints about it. I also have an Acer TravelMate, and it is "okay," because the battery life sucks and there are no high-capacity battery replacements available.
I think a lot of Apple fans need to stop and ask themselves what they really like about Apple, especially in the face of multiple MacBook problems -- heat, cosmetic trouble, buzzing noise, lack of/too much thermal compound, and whatever else will be discovered next week. - PCBuckman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I have the black macbook and have not noticed any discoloration. Is the discoloration unique to the white color?
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I actually wouldn't be surprised to see the black getting lighter around teh same areas as the white macbook discoloration.
- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Yes it is.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That wasn't even remotely funny.
- lahmulahamu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7uh oh... my shiny laptop stopped working when it looked in the mirror and realized it wasn't shiny anymore
- gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I am in utter disbelief as I sit here next to the window staring at the yellow discoloration appearing underneath the Shieldzone film."
I think it had the stain, then he applied the covering, then another area of the macbook got the stain under the covering. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would like to second that, it's also known as the "Rev.B Rule". We should have MacBook Rev. B later this year.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3if you ask me that looks like a pee stain
- bSimms, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Better hope it doesn't randomly explode
- asdfer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Nowhere in the article the author mentions applying "The Shieldzone" straight out of the box nor cleaning the palmrest before applying it.
Two comments on the author's Flickr page mentioned this. One person even said that he cleaned the wristpad using acetone before applying the film. -
