- rimantas, on 01/06/2009, -5/+61No, nobody buys them, Apple just makes them for fun.
- zomgorly, on 01/06/2009, -5/+41Nice to see a new 17" MBP but I was really hoping to see a new Mac Mini.
- Jeepinator, on 01/07/2009, -2/+20That's why you don't get the 250GB SSD and top-spec processor or the RAM. Buy your own RAM and save.
- FredFredrickson, on 01/07/2009, -2/+13$2700 for a laptop is a ***** joke - and before you even bother trying to feed me the "it's made for professionals" *****, real professionals have a desktop machine for their work.
- coldeh, on 01/06/2009, -17/+27OK regardless of any of its features, say for the sake of argument its the most perfect laptop, ever made. I am quite well off, and could definitely not afford to spend anywhere near what they are asking for even the base model of the 17", on my next laptop.
Do people actually buy these, like with their own money? Company purchases aside? I mean, add 8gb, 250SSD and 2.9Ghz and you are talking $5,199.00.
For a laptop, really? - nupr, on 01/07/2009, -5/+14Yeah... thanks apple. Jobs or no Jobs, this MacWorld sucked.
Ohhhh iLife and iWork! I'm so excited to use it on my new copy of Snow Leopa....wait a second. - Kanaka, on 01/07/2009, -1/+10Too. Freaking. Expensive
- tmcal, on 01/07/2009, -2/+10I like the keyboard on my 13", but with the added space of the 15" and now 17", you would think they would utilize it more. Maybe make it more ergonomic. Yet it's the exact same keyboard...
- garryw, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9Kind of sad my 17" laptop is 12 months old and can run circles around this thing. The 9600 graphics card is unacceptable for the price.
- seanosays, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9All that potential real estate and they still haven't included a full size keyboard! x_x
- chaos86, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8Is it a similar size PC laptop? Not trying to make assumptions here, but my roommate and I both have 17" notebooks, my mac and his PC. His never leaves the house because it's 2.5" thick and weighs over 10lbs. He never uses it on his lap because the 3 laud fans are on the underside, and it has all these weird protrusions underneath and pokey rubber feet it which make it literally painful to use
I was concerned when I got my 17" MBP that it would be too big, but in practice it's no bigger than a large textbook, and since it's light (relatively speaking) and thin it's easy to carry under one arm. - Texa, on 01/07/2009, -3/+9If you are quite well off, you can afford it.
Very few people can afford everything. But people that are "well off" can afford anything, but you have to be selective and prioritize. What's more important a BMW or gadgets? These are choices people make.
I have friends that drive BMWs that say they can't afford a Nikon D700 or an Apple laptop. I also have friends that have spent $20K on camera and computer equipment, and they say they can't afford luxury cars. The point is if you are well of you can afford anything, but you'll likely have to cut back somewhere else.
I have no problem spending $3K on a laptop, but I'm frugal when spending on housing and vehicles. - drmobutu, on 01/07/2009, -5/+11Weakest MacWorld Ever! No wonder Jobs didn't even bother to attend!
The battery life thing is a non-starter, because a 17 inch laptop is too big to be really be portable...I bet 90% of the people who buy one of these will just leave it on their desk, plugged-in...not that they will sell that many, due to the economy.
And why can't they offer the matte-screen on the regular macbooks?
Seriously, I could do Jobs's job, better than Jobs... - nupr, on 01/07/2009, -1/+7whoaaa, I just typed something in this "Digg-whatcha-ma-call-it"... and it freakin showed up in this "reply"? IN LIKE 2 SECONDS!
- awolfe91, on 01/06/2009, -1/+7It's the internet
- timusca, on 01/07/2009, -6/+12Just to jump ahead of everyone who will no doubt bitch about the internal battery... do you really need a spare battery with you when this one has up to 8 hours of use? And if you ever have to replace it, do you really have a problem with taking the back off to replace it? 8 hours is a REALLY good time on a battery, and I see no reason why anyone would need a spare.
I swear, Apple could cure cancer, and people would bitch, bitch, bitch... - Lionhart, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Agreed. Especially with how well-specced the new Macbooks are you have to be an idiot to shell out for these Pros.
AND $50 EXTRA FOR MATTE? WTF? - cthellis, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6Hence why they're pulling out of it. Public opinion on "Macworld" and the importance of the keynotes puts undue strain and rigid schedules on their product releases, which they want to have under their control at all times.
"MacWorld sucked?" Well... um... can't a keynote only be comprised of what's new right now? Isn't everything else an illogical assumption that occasional magic (like the iPhone launch) can be recaptured on a yearly basis?
The mini certainly needs a refresh, but I think they've been delaying while trying to figure out what to actually do with it. (Keep it? Ditch it? Merge it with the Apple TV to create a more unified class of product?) The iMac needs some hardware updating as well, but that's all it would be... a refresh. Was anyone expecting it would be completely redesigned? (Meanwhile, it may not line up with contracts they're trying to forge and schedules they're trying to keep to whether the economic downturn better.)
That all these shenanigans have an actual impact on their press and stock price is the reason they're pulling out now, and the reason lots of larger companies are pulling out of trade shows. They don't need it, and at can in fact be BAD for them. - scottromansky, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6i heard an extra 50$ for the anti-glare screen.....not good imo
- toxicpiano, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6NEW MINI WHERE ARE YOU? :(
- Hulka, on 01/07/2009, -2/+7Yep, don't buy the RAM with the Mac's or MacBook's. I was told that directly by an Apple Store employee when I was perusing the MBP's.
For over9k, buying your own RAM and HDD is nothing close to building your own. I'm the furthest thing from an Apple Fanboy but I know a superior product when I see one. There's more to the MBP's than the components like CPU, RAM and HDD. I do think Mac's are overpriced a bit, but then again I'd be willing to buy one over the competition. - mazurkfsflip8, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5yeh i dont get why they work on improving battery life on a portable desktop while their 13 and 15 inch models only average 4 hours.
- SniperGX1, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6Isn't that the infinite loop calling the fractal repetitive?
- FredFredrickson, on 01/07/2009, -2/+7I'm an artist and in my experience, anybody who describes graphics as something that *pop* doesn't know a godamned thing about graphics.
- MacParrot, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5Can we digg you down for just not having anything interesting or relevant to say? Does your HP have an 8-hour battery? if you like our HP ad that's what you prefer then we're all very happy for you. For people that want to run OS X and need a 17-inch laptop then this is probably very interesting to them.
- HouseofEl, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5I'm sorry, but that's the dumbest ***** I've heard all week. You're going to be frugal on real estate but drop 3 grand on a laptop?
If you "friends" are buying BMWs and can't afford a Nikon D700, you know what that means? That means they can't afford either and have poor spending habits. The folks that are spending 20k on a camera and computer equipment sound more like professionals that are trying to build a source of income through using their own equipment and freelance. That stuff is a tax write off. That is also an investment, of course they can't afford a luxury car. I also suspect that it's just you asking them why they don't have a luxury car, not them spending their money poorly.
It's not the choices they make. It's that you and your friends don't have a clue about proper money management.
In the end you're being frugal on the one thing that will always appreciate in value in some fashion. The housing crisis has indeed dropped prices, but if you have the money, this is the perfect time to buy. - PleasantKiller, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5guess what this website is for?
- extratired, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5Non glare? Why the hell didn't they make this an option for the 15"? I feel screwed now!
- carbonfilament, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4its too bad you have to pay an extra $50 for the matte screen. I get why, its just too bad. Also its sad that there's no FW400. I know, adaptors and such, but it certainly raises the cost of upgrading that you also have to replace cables/buy adaptors etc.
Poor FW, you're so misunderstood. - digitalpencil, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5yeah, just like it.. except one's a Centrino based paving-stone that dies after 3-4 hrs (max) and the other comes with dual graphics, an 8hr battery life, LED-lit 1920x1200 IPS panel and weighs in at 6.6lbs..
not saying, i wouldn't opt for the pavillion over the MBP but arguing the pavillion is the same just because it shares the same sized display is plain retarded. - soopafly, on 01/07/2009, -2/+6*you're*
- knaps, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Yo dawg I heard you liked Jobs' jobs so we put Jobs' jobs in your job so you can do Jobs' job as your job.
- chaos86, on 01/07/2009, -5/+9I've used matte, gloss, and glass. Matte was the worst because the reflections are still there, just fuzzy, so they dull the colors. Since the reflection on a matte screen is of light from all directions, you can't even move the machine or angle the screen to avoid it as easily as you can with a glossy display. People whine so much about the reflectivity without actually comparing the two. I'd love to see a photo of 2 macs side by side one gloss, one matte, angled so that both are reflecting something bright, so people could actually see the difference.
- nshady, on 01/07/2009, -10/+14In other news, bacon still exists.
- protocolor, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4and since the battery is not removable, looks like the ram and hard drive aren't either...
- neonoodle, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3This Digg thread reminds me of IRC circa 1994.
- digitalpencil, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4@Jeepinator: 2x 4GB DDR3's going for $1180 over at crucial so it's actually in-keeping with current costs..
http://crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT ...
don't expect it to depreciate at same rate though ;) - timusca, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3NO, you can buy a replacement battery... you just have to take the back off the laptop, idiot. You DO NOT have to buy a new laptop. I bet you think you have to buy a new iPod when the battery goes bad too, don't you?
- cthellis, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4Can we instead digg you down for being a *****?
- digitalpencil, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4^crucial are priced practically the same as every other ram manufacturer, you're just clutching at straws now..
- coldeh, on 01/07/2009, -2/+5I don't mean I couldn't afford to spend it in general, like if I had to buy it or death. What I meant was, I don't understand how people could spend that much on "just" a laptop.
My Desktop: Dell 30" Monitor, Q6600, SLi 8800GT
My Phone: iPhone 16gb 3G
My Laptop: MSI Netbook
All of which COMBINED, cost less than the Macbook Pro 17". You do the maths. - MacParrot, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4If only there was a way to prevent most Apple stories from appearing on an individual's front page here on Digg. If only...
- Klisk, on 01/07/2009, -2/+5***** ridiculous, really.
Where is the 13 inch Macbook Pro? C'mon Apple. This is what we really want. - MacParrot, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3You're on the wrong site. AOL and YouTube is over there ------>
Just let your mom know you're using her computer again - raydeen, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Is it really as easy as taking the back off? If so, then I've got no problem with the set up. If it's something where I would have to go to the Apple Store to have it done or send it away to have the battery replaced, then it's a bit of a deal breaker especially if it's engineered the way the current MacBook batteries are where they will fail without warning.
- digitalpencil, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4still @ $2800 it's ***** expensive! i've got a 15" MBP (SR) and that cost me £900 when it first came out.. that was expensive enough! i don't regret the decision in the slightest, it's the best laptop i've ever owned but there's no way in hell i would spend that much on a 17".
- robotfriendly, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3That is a shift in marketing lingo that is starting to become much more popular, and not just because of Apple. There have been numerous laptop battery fire incidents in the last couple of years involving everyone from Apple to Dell to Lenovo and Sony.
- tyler0is0sexy, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3If not just for aesthetic reasons.
- TrancePhreak, on 01/07/2009, -0/+29600 GT in a $2800 laptop is very expensive. You can get a same sized laptop with dual 9800 GT's for the same price.
