- orangetiki, on 10/30/2008, -2/+36those pictures are so bad I will just have to take your word for it.
- brickbat, on 10/30/2008, -0/+32Hmm...you bought 4 gb of Apple ram?
mmmmhahahahahahahahaha - AlanFang, on 10/30/2008, -1/+23The image quality of their cameras suck so much it is impossible to make any sort of valid decision about which is better.
- BrendanSheehan, on 10/30/2008, -9/+23In real life these screens all look pretty good actually. You just don't see this in person. You see blacks as fairly dark black, no matter which MacBook. Digg me down I don't care, I know what I saw.
- slimnickyy, on 10/30/2008, -2/+15The spin the submitter put on the article is dubious, as the Air is barely more premium than the high end MacBook. I agree the Air is premium to the basic MacBooks, and I would understand the basic alum MacBook using a cheap display. However, the high-end model on the MacBook should have a display similar to the one on the Air. I know in the US there's a $400 difference b/w the high-end MacBook and the basic Pro, however in the UK it's only a £150 difference. You really get a lot for £150.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -7/+18They all look like ***** to me.
- birch25, on 10/30/2008, -1/+8admittedly the viewing angle on my new macbook is smaller than my last computer (4 year old powerbook) but i've found that 99% of the time it is not an issue.
- mecharabbit, on 10/30/2008, -1/+8Just wait for the MacBook Air Touch Nano Pro coming out next spring.
- Chairboy, on 10/30/2008, -8/+13Here's a handy tool for folks who have purchased the new Mac Book:

Hope it helps! - Emachine, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5I've just got the new Pro, the glass is quite reflective, but the reflection disappears when you crank up the brightness. Luckily the LED backlight is painfully bright (indoors), and so it's reasonably usable outdoors...
- wush, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7viewing angles, TN panels, look it up
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4I agree. When using a laptop, I frequently use it from straight in front.

Get your RAM from Newegg next time and save yourself a hundred and fifty bucks. - ray4389, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4I bought a Black Macbook before the new ones came out...I'll keep it, plus it's retro now
:-P
Plus I have firewire too - awhiteflame, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4A USB dongle for Firewire would make the baby Jesus cry.
- aserer511, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3those are horrible black levels on the macbook
- HenryLegge, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4My MacBook should be coming tomorrow, i would have gotten the pro but i don't have the money, although i did crank it up to 4gb RAM so should be snappy
- zforrester, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3I'ved used both the Air, the old school macbooks, and now the new alluminum ones, and yes, the screen is not nearly as nice as the Air. I was a little surprised to find this out, but I'm glad that it's not just my machine with the problem
- nogami, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3As the owner of a previous generation macbook (who now has a mb pro), I'm stating, first hand, 100% knowledge that the macbook pro screen beats the hell out of the non-pro screen. It's not even close.
And it's not the backlighting, it's the off-axis display. Even tilting the screen forwards and backwards is enough to make a MB screen look like crap. - mecharabbit, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Yeah, the lighting is pretty poor. But hey, if it weren't for poor lighting I would never get laid.
- ThraxyWaxy, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3What a ***** joke, each computer has its own viewing angle, one camera angle can't be expected to capture them all perfectly. The only thing it shows is that the higher end models have greater viewing angles, not that the picture quality is that much better. If you're sitting in the right spot the screen quality will not look like a 50 year old TV which is how the camera makes it look. It's just a half-assed attempt to push the macbook air and the macbook pro.
- Mootabolife, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Well the Air's screen showed up pretty clearly.. I'll have to blame the LCDs.
- diskopo, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2The one tested in the photo WAS the high end MacBook, which uses the same display as the lower end MacBook.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2That's how they get ya!
- m4xn00b, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2in all fields.
- Urkel, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2Yet another person claiming the screen is just fine despite not even owning one. The screen is good but blacks are NOT black because many times you are forced to crank up the LED in order to fight the glass glare.
- Greatn3ss, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2Don't you realize you can buy additional ram from other places for thousands of times cheaper, and install it yourself instead of paying $200 extra?
- jaycalgary, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2Well it does have a crappy screen. I don't know how you can spin that argument. To me a really nice screen is one of the most important parts of a laptop.
- Brassbud, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2I compared all three (albeit in a brightly lit Apple Store), and I did notice a difference in the vertical viewing angles, but ultimately I thought the cheapest laptop offered was not only the best value, but the best all around, regardless of price. If I was in the market, I'd buy one.
- mouthymadness, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2You want a sage laptop? Like the Sage iMac?
- Chaulis, on 10/30/2008, -2/+3No, and if Chuck Norris catches you insulting him like that, we will soon see a digg headline of "Chjoma10 learned first hand what a Chuck Norris Roundhouse feels like after telling people that Chuck uses a Dell"
- jamespurdy, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah I'm not sure why they didn't allow the option of a nonglossy screen for the Macbook Pro, Glossy screens normally look nice, but fail when it comes to working with graphics and movies, which is what alot of people buy the Macbook Pros for.
- orph3us, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1greatn3ss:
doesn't the two gig version come with 2x1gb sticks? If so, you would have to buy 2x2gb sticks and leave out the 2 1gig sticks.... - wush, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Why doesn't it? I said decent, not better.
- mouthymadness, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1There was a lady at the apple store once that bought her air the night before back in march(when i was getting a replacement iMac after 4 major repairs) and she got a BSOD thing with OS X and they just replaced i on the spot.... Thats really strange.
All in all the repair dudes at the apple store are real pushovers, just get really pissed. - tehsuck1, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1The best part was when you set yourself up for that.
- polarnature, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1***** pictures
- mouthymadness, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1You know whats funny, when people said the Al iMac's display was a matte behind the glass? Not true, I found a plunger(that was clean) and I pulled off the glass and black surround and its a glossy LCD.
- exboy99, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1When I ordered my macbook I chose to upgrade to 4 gigs
the added cost of the upgrade is $150.
I remember apple ram costing way more than
I thought it should but now their prices are more
in line with the aftermarket vendors.
as far as the screen, I'm not sure if it's something you
get used to or just have denial, but I'm happy with it.
I think the screen is bright and clear, and the blacks
are plenty dark of course I can tilt the screen to look poor
and in the pics it looks like the angle could be adjusted
to improve the screen.
best part is the track pad. - Urkel, on 10/31/2008, -1/+2I don't think you should worry. I have a Black Macbook and bought the new one. I used it a week but after the excitement faded I ended up giving it to the wife. The glassy screen and lack of firewire ended up getting to me so I went back to my loud but "workable" Black Macbook.
I'll probably wait 6months and if they don't offer a matte Macbook Pro then I'll have to figure out what to replace this thing with. - Elranzer, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1I didn't know that iMacs were laptops.
- zoom1928, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1How could you save $150 when the entire RAM upgrade costs $150? Are you claiming NewEgg's price is $0? It would have to be free to make your incorrect claim true.
- stevenxx, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1refurbished white macbook
4gb of ram
2.1 GHz
$970
I HAVE FIREWIRE TOO
bahahha - diskopo, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1It was photoshop. Blame my lousy photoshop skills.
- Gr1nch, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1same thing with the mid range macbook. With the brightness all the way up its REALLY bright. however at the bottom of the display where it says "MacBook" I can see my fingers and knuckles in the glass. The glass is reflective, but the LED backlight will adjust so that you're not looking in a mirror.
- leamanc, on 10/31/2008, -1/+2Insert random whine about lack of FireWire on new MacBook.
I wish it was included too, but the persistent moaning has just made my fellow Mac users look like a bunch of whiny douches. As if the rest of the world didn't already think that about us... - mouthymadness, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1They aren't, thats why I said LIKE the sage iMac's.
- zoom1928, on 10/31/2008, -1/+2And no comments about the nonfunctional trackpads? The Apple Store wanted a 10% restocking fee to replace the MacBook I bought last night with a working one. Apple is getting as bad as Best Buy at screwing customers.
- eatrains, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1We can't win, I guess. If we don't complain about the lack of FireWire, we look like we just blindly accept whatever Apple does. If we do complain, we look like whiny douches.
- mayonaize, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Yep, if I had Jason Statham on my screen I'd be complaining about it too...
