MacBook Air: So Thin that it Got Thrown Away with Newspapers
newsweek.com — When something is thin enough to fit into an envelope, light enough to sit on your lap for a couple of hours without discomfort and so compact that it doesn't even bulge in an airline seat-back pocket, wouldn't it make sense that one could lose track of such a thing? Yes, it would make sense. Believe me. Because I can't find my MacBook Air.

- Charlotte_Web, on 03/11/2008, -4/+10My obvious point being that the Levys would seem to have more to lose by engaging in some unethical marketing scheme.

MCMLXXXII seems to ignore the obvious. - ShrimpCrackers, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Its a marketing scheme. There is no way you're going to accidentally throw out a 3 lb laptop that is as wide and long as the Macbook (its just thinner). Its not paper thin either because if you actually seen one you'll see a lot of work used to exten the beveling curves, in fact hefty enough.
- flashback99, on 03/11/2008, -2/+3NO AMOUNT OF PURLITZER PRIZES CAN MAKE THIS ARTICLE GOOD.
- Urkel, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Then he should be ashamed for trying to pass something like this off as journalism. He didn't throw away his Macbook Air because it's so incredibly thin. He threw it away because he's a moron.

- griz, on 03/11/2008, -5/+36And how exactly is this a selling point? Easily lost with the newspapers. Hmmm, I'll have to run right out and buy one of those.
- katrayun, on 03/11/2008, -1/+15One could also ask how being harassed by the TSA over the Macbook Air is a selling point... and yet that article was blatant advertisement.
- sexybobo, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2Glad i was not the only person who thought so.

- riah, on 03/11/2008, -1/+9My first conspiracy thought was it's an attempt to coax a free replacement.
- catachip, on 03/11/2008, -13/+6Can the conspiracy talk. Apple doesn't pay for any advertising other than explicit print, website, and television ads. Articles, and spots in TV shows and that are NOT paid for by Apple. You do realize that most people in media use Macs, and are very enthusiastic about them, and thus, want to feature them in the work they create. No big mystery here.
- jabberwolf, on 03/11/2008, -4/+4Actually YES they do pay for advertising spots - many of the websites that give them good reviews have Apple advertisements on them. That is basically indirect bribery for a biased review. They give reviewers FREE Apple products as well. Go open a newsweek and you will find an Apple advertisement in it. Go on ! Most people in the media DO NOT use macs. Hammering out an article while sipping a latte, is not really that complicated so most want to look "trendy" doing so. Most mas users use photoshop at best but most others are pretentious and want to look smart (without actually being so).
- catachip, on 03/11/2008, -2/+4Umm... you really don't know how media works. If you can pull your head our of your cynical ass for a moment you'd realize that the advertising departments and the editorial department of reputable organizations are completely independent. The people writing articles at Time and Newsweek do not know what ads are going to be in Apple, nor do they care. Similarly, Apple provides free products FOR REVIEW, they must then be returned to Apple. I understand people being jaded and such, but, reputable news organizations have not completely sold out.
Furthermore, how can you sit there and tell me that most people in media don't use Macs. Have you ever seen shots of the offices of Google, Facebook, or writers at the New York Times or such? Yeah, they use Macs. Yes, they tend to be higher wage, higher educated "yuppies" and self-admitted snobs, myself included, which make up the majority of Mac users who are willing to pay a premium price for a product we love. If you have not noticed, most Mac users are pretty enthusiastic about their choice. It should be ZERO surprise that they want the people in their creations (i.e., TV shows) to use Macs. "No, Bill, throw a Dell in there.. that looks MUCH better". Your characterization that Mac users just use Photoshop is so horribly misguided it's laughable. What is this, 1998?
I'll fully admit that Mac users enjoy aesthetically pleasing hardware and software. Some people prefer BMWs and Porches and Audis. They will get you from A to B like a Hyundai, but, some people want a nicer ride. End of rant.- drakenlot, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Hey, I like the look of my Elantra... I think it's looks better than some luxury cars out there.
- TheUngod, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1You may also want to think about the fact apple most likely gives computers to people in these positions to be noticed, as opposed to the media people choosing to buy them for themselves
- catachip, on 03/11/2008, -2/+4Umm... you really don't know how media works. If you can pull your head our of your cynical ass for a moment you'd realize that the advertising departments and the editorial department of reputable organizations are completely independent. - TheUngod, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2Uh...yeah, you're full of crap. I sincerely doubt all the correspondents from the Daily Show use the exact same model of Macbook. If you've watched in the past week, they've run segments with 5 or 6 open all at once, all exactly the same. No way that's not product placement.
- knightboat, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2There are four Apple notebook designs right now, and one of those is just the same thing as another except in black. It really isn't inconceivable that 5 or 6 would all be the same model, especially considering how specific each of the few models are in their purpose.
You guys are really reaching for reasons to hate on Apple. Everyone has different computing philosophies so those arguments will never die, but why waste your time in life complaining about where they spend their marketing money? Should digg go forward with a Cola Wars section so we can gripe about which restaurants are serving Pepsi only and how ***** off we are about it?- knightboat, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1FrantiX, you must not be aware of how digg works.
- TheUngod, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1Who's complaining? I'm stating they use product placement, theres nothing wrong with that. I was merely refuting the claim some schmuck made claiming they didn't use it.
- knightboat, on 03/11/2008, -2/+1You didn't refute anything. You just made an assumption that they did product placement based on something you saw and presented your assumption as evidence.
- mrminty, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Welcome to Digg.
- JustAboutReal, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1... or the company bought a bunch of the same model from apple and gave them to employees... you know... how companies do with laptops from dell, hp, ibm etc?
- knightboat, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2There are four Apple notebook designs right now, and one of those is just the same thing as another except in black. It really isn't inconceivable that 5 or 6 would all be the same model, especially considering how specific each of the few models are in their purpose.
- catachip, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1First of all, it was the MacBook Air they were using on the Daily Show. If they had all been Dells, would it have still been product placement? Hmm, I wonder if a comedy show in New York that caters to young, University-aged people would happen to be using a computer that is an icon for that group. Could it be that they bought these new computers for everyone on the staff. Or, that the MacBook Airs were part of the joke, that you don't see many on CNN.
Point is, Apple doesn't need to pay for product placement. The people in Media who are Mac fans do it for them. Same how those Mac haters in Media will insist the computers in their projects are NOT Macs. It's not that hard to understand.- Aidje, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2If they had all been Dells, then yes, there would be a good chance that was product placement. If they had all been Windows PCs, no way that's product placement. Your analogy is somewhat less than flawless.
- TheUngod, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1If they had been Dells of COURSE it would have been product placement. When the logo is so clearly visible THAT is product placement. If they were not paid, they wouldn't have had them all angled so perfectly to show off that shiny apple symbol. I think it is a perfect show for apple to use product placement for the exact reasons you mentioned, it being geared towards younger hipster types. Hell, for the situation they were using them for they didn't even need computers, or they could have at least just shown generic monitors if they wanted to get the point across. For some reason you are in denial that apple uses the product placement practice though.
Go on ! - Urkel, on 03/11/2008, -1/+7This isn't masked advertising for Apple. It's masked advertising for Newsweek. How many of us have EVER visited their site for tech news or reviews? Yet today they are suddenly a hotspot for a tech fix? You can't buy publicity like this. (Oh wait, you can. It costs $1800)
- bscene, on 03/11/2008, -1/+4is anybody paranoid enough to believe that this is "masked advertising"?
- catachip, on 03/11/2008, -3/+1Here is the Washington Post article on this exact topic: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic ... "....Apple said it does not pay for product placement..."
Why is it any more of a stretch to say that the mac fanboys you love to hate are simply acting like the mac fanboys you love to hate, rather than Apple itself paying them off. Do you not want to admit that, yet, artistic and creative types who have the largest influence on media and the arts overwhelmingly choose Macs? - tony23, on 03/11/2008, -1/+3"is anybody stupid enough to fail for that masked advertising ?"
Unfortunately, yes. - mentari, on 03/11/2008, -1/+0It's a plausible scenario - considering the ridiculous size and weight of the Air to the ridiculous size and weight of weekend papers (with all their glossy supplements). It's also plausible that the writer - like many users of Apple products - has crossed that fine line between devotion and delusion; which explains why the article reads like advertising copy. I’m sure it wouldn’t have been written with such an Air [sic] of joviality if the missing laptop had been the personal property of the writer. The article gives all those users of ancient laptops (like myself) a nice warm feeling of spite – “Ha! Little chance of /me/ mistaking my Dell Inspiron 5150 for a part of an old weekend paper!”
- MasterPain, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1let me just stuff my 3000 dollar computer in this seat back here. Sounds plausible, if your an idiot.

- Urkel, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5Okay, so a lot of papers weigh 3lbs. Now how many papers weigh 5lbs?
The idea that you can pick up a stack of newspapers and NOT realize that it weighs twice as much as it should is ridiculous. Sure, you can make the argument that 3lbs vs 5lbs is tiny, but by doing that you'll destroy the Macbook Air's selling point that "A 3lb Air is noticeably lighter than that heavy 4.75lb Macbook". - TheKage, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1Oakland Press
- aussieNickuss, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1When I take out my newspapers to the recycling, there is usually a good 5+ days worth there. - JuliusErving, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1Not really. Straight from the article:

- solis365, on 03/11/2008, -0/+17Actually, FTA:
You have to examine the bookshelves. You have to look under furniture. You have to scan through manila folders—because the Air is barely thicker than the papers inserted in those folders. Basically, you have to tear the whole place apart.

What universe does Mr. Money Bags live in? $1800 for a "travel-designated" laptop? Does he have a separate laptop for sitting on the crapper, too?- maronnax, on 03/11/2008, -6/+9Is the idea that someone might have a laptop AND a desktop **that** crazy, particularly when that person is senior editor and chief technology writer for Newsweek?
From wikipedia:
Steven Levy (born 1951) is an American journalist who has written several books on computers, technology, cryptography, the Internet, cybersecurity, and privacy. Levy is chief technology writer and a senior editor for Newsweek, writing mainly in the "Science & Technology" section. He also writes the column "Random Access" in the monthly feature "Focus On Technology." Levy is also a contributor to Wired, and has had articles published on Harper's, Macworld, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Premiere, and Rolling Stone. He is regarded (along with Walter Mossberg) as a prominent and respected critic of Apple Inc.. In July 2004, Levy wrote a cover story (which also featured an interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs) which unveiled the 4th generation of the iPod to the world before Apple had officially done so, an unusual event since Apple is well known for its tight-lipped press policy.- jabberwolf, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1"Levy is also a contributor to Wired, and has had articles published on Harper's, MACWORLD!!!, The New York Times Magazine" Yeah he would have a macbook to through away. And again for traveling, its not an apt device and more likely to get smashed then tossed. All the dude does is type crappy articles, its about a step up from writting down on a pad. He was most likely given the macbook ( as Apple loves to do for good reviews) so no real sympathy for him.
- brundlefly, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Not THAT crazy, maronnax. Just spectacularly beyond my means. My laptop doubles as my desktop.
- BossKey, on 03/11/2008, -3/+11What universe are you living in? From what I've read, the majority of reviewers have said the SAME THING: That the MacBook Air is too underfeatured as a primary computer, but is very desirable as a satellite to a desktop or bigger laptop, if you have the bucks to support both. I've read that so many times I can't believe you're being dugg up.
- quadrafake, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0i dugg for use of the word "crapper."
haha...crapper...anyway, i took his point not to be suprised at the use of the MacBook Air, but as another example of the continued disparity between have and havenots. But seriously, crapper is a funny word. Say it out loud right now, and see if you don't smile. - brundlefly, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1You took my point correctly. And, yes, crapper is a wonderful word.

My girlfriend was over this weekend and as I reached into my box of condoms I pulled out my Macbook Air instead and naturally I jumped on Digg. Well she got ***** and left, but the next day she called and said she had cheated on me and got herpes.
Thanks Apple!- Namco, on 03/11/2008, -2/+9I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or call Jerry Springer.
- TheKage, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I dugg you up for hilarity, but how the hell is that Apple's fault? Lol.
- nicolaa, on 03/11/2008, -1/+27Kudos for linking to the "Print" version.
- TheHamBeast, on 03/11/2008, -10/+13Funny, because the MacBook Air belongs in the garbage!!! (Oh no he didn't!)
- holmenb, on 03/11/2008, -1/+9Dugg for linking to the printer friendly version.
- AllYourBase3, on 03/11/2008, -3/+9What a ***** idiot.
oh and I can keep my dell laptop on my lap for hours without "discomfort" What kind of pussy can't tolerate a few pounds on their lap?- TheKage, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1*raises hand slowly...*
- breezytrees, on 03/11/2008, -4/+6this guy is full of FAIL. Lost a $3000 computer. way to go guy.
- lintmonkey, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6Your reading comprehension grade is full of fail. He said $1800. Not everyone goes for the SSD.
- catachip, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6The base model, that almost everyone who gets one buys, is $1800. That's like saying the Mac Pro is $16,000 because I can configure one with 8 core processors, 32 GB of ram, 8 TB of storage and such... you're just creating propaganda.
- ravensncrows, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5i agree with fake steve, he jacked it himself
- Tufriast, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Buy a better wife.
- effedup, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1.. what's the point of this story? that he lost it? or that it's thin? I'm not going to read it becuase I already know the answer. It's like it's straight from the Apple advertising department..
- bmorlok, on 03/11/2008, -1/+4"The Macbook Air, as useful as a piece of paper, but costs $1800"
- spgass, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1You're about right: http://lowtechtimes.com/2008/02/19/macbook-air-is- ...
- whereiseljefe, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2The apple marketing machine is in full spin these past few days. First the airport check fiasco, now this guy who "accidentally threw it away cause it's so small". I predict tomorrow we read a story about a litter of puppies adopting a macbook air as their new home. What could possibly be cuter than that?
- shiitake, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2That's some good detective work, Lou.
- andrew606, on 03/11/2008, -3/+8i would have thrown it away too. what use is a computer with only 1 usb and no ETHERNET, cardbus, firewire, cd, dvd, vga, svideo inputs/outputs etc. what dumb, completely useless computer. anyone who buys one is an idiot.
- kevinisnthere, on 03/11/2008, -2/+1If you don't need it, why have it?
I don't have an Air, but seriously. Most of the time I only use one USB port on my computer for my external HD. Wireless internet is great. No cards. No firewire devices (but once I did plug in a video camera.) The CD/DVD drive is available for purchase. It comes with the VGA adapter. And who uses S-Video anymore when all projectors have a VGA or DVI connection, and most new TVs come with a connection for one of those? Think about it.- andrew606, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2i use a usb plug for: wireless mouse, printer, external hd, and usb flashdrives, i use cd/dvd drive to listen and burn music and dvds, wireless internet is not that great, i use enternet for a sure connection so i dont get dropped from games, or important business meetings, lots of tvs has s video and vga, but you cant use that on the mac air unless you carry an extra adapter around with you. i use firewire to convert movies from my video camera, i use firewire to plug in my mixer and record music. mac book air wow thats awesome computer right there, totally user friendly. i thought about it. mac air is a 2000 dollar POS.
- Speed, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2andrew: Obviously you use your laptop on a desk. If you can afford the MacBook Air, you can afford a USB hub. And if you don't like it, don't buy it.
- mentari, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1"anyone who buys one is an idiot" ... anyone who buys one is an Airhead.

Cut the crap, we all have ipods and they smaller and we don't have such hissy fits (or pointless blog articles) filled with masturabatory technical spec porn when they go missing.
