- leprix, on 01/06/2008, -1/+42Stop it. Stop it. We can all just wait till the 15th.
- weskandel, on 01/06/2008, -6/+30That looks so amazing.
- deadbaby, on 01/06/2008, -2/+20That fake design is definitely not possible. The screen resolution is very awkward. Far too wide and not tall enough. Using this device would be incredibly frustrating even with multi-touch. A pull down physical keyboard or a larger screen with iPhone style soft keyboard would be a lot better.
- Ireland, on 01/06/2008, -0/+13Spellcheckers don't like brand names.
- cmgriffi, on 01/06/2008, -4/+15I want one
- pjbarnoy, on 01/06/2008, -4/+11That's an awesome concept. My only problem with this is its resemblance to the iPhone/iPod touch. Don't get me wrong, both of those devices look amazing; but in reality, Apple needs to distinguish between all of their devices if they hope to succeed.
Many might disagree, but since it looks so much like my iPod, I think I'd get bored with the design if more Apple devices were to follow it.
Off topic: has anybody noticed that the word "iPhone" isn't in digg's spellchecker's dictionary? It tells me I'm spelling "iPhone" wrong. - skeen07, on 01/06/2008, -2/+9I'd hit it.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -1/+8Err.. you HAVE heard about OS X Leopard, and how it can dual-boot into Windows easily?
- silviarunner, on 01/06/2008, -2/+9Great mock-up. Best shots I have seen.
- MBX1, on 01/06/2008, -5/+11Purrdy virtual keyboard i must say.
- ut2k4king, on 01/06/2008, -0/+5This thing looks nice, and, if it's released, it had better be competitively priced or it won't sell. In my opinion, if it's more than $1200 people just won't buy it, they'll go for a MacBook and be done with it.
- LeeSoong, on 01/06/2008, -2/+6It's about time - the iPod Touch just needs a few software updates to make it into a fully functional palmtop hand held computer.
A touchbook with a touch screen is a logical addition to the Mac family - and something I would immediately buy. - staticoranges, on 01/06/2008, -0/+4Yeah, the only thing I don't like about my iPod touch is that when you type, the keyboard takes up most of the screen. It would need a huge screen so that the keyboard wouldn't take up too much space.
- LeafInTheWind, on 01/06/2008, -0/+4no stylus only a finger. apple hates styluses with all their hearts
- Ireland, on 01/06/2008, -1/+5Don't waste our time you useless *****.
- redfox2600, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3I must honestly ask, why are we questioning if the product is possible? I have a tablet PC for a few years now. It literally this product without the apple logo. Beside for anyone who touch types the button-less interface would be a pain to use. Which is why many people stick with the hybrid laptop models.
- chad78, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Well, the rumors are that MacWorld will reveal at least one "sub-notebook" from Apple that has no optical drive whatsoever. So a docking station would be useful for that. I think the concept of a docking station makes alot of sense. I mean, do you really need all the connectivity when you go to the WiFi Cafe that you do when you are at home or oin the office? How many DVD have you burned on the subway? How many perphirals do you use in the hotel room? Ultra-Portable is called that for a reason. I'm not saying you don't need connectivity, I'm just saying that being able to decide what to take and what not to have to carry is a nice option. If I could cut the bulk and weight of my laptop in half when I travel, and still have all the power I need when I get home - that's fine by me. In fact, I'm typing this on my wireless keyboard, reading it on my 21 inch external monitor, playing mp3s stored on my external 320 GB hard drive through my external amplified speakers right now. No, it's not a docking station, but it might as well be. If I didn't have a WiFi enabled printer - I'd have to have a USB hub - so why not make the portable part more portable? (BTW, my MacBook does just fine on the road by itself - but when I'm home, it's ever better.
- LeafInTheWind, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Can someone explain the need to slide your fully functioning laptop/touchtop computer into another desktop computer that might also be a touch screen!? I cant see the use? If it has a base you have your disc drive, usb, etc then you dont need docking it into a what looks like in the picture a 30" computer.
- Devo777, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3If they figure out a way to make typing less sensitive, i.e. a harder input is required for letters than just the average touch, then it is possible that a touch keyboard could work.
- staticoranges, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2I like it, but the camera needs to be on top of the device, not on the side, unless it has an Accelerometer and you turn it to the side to use the camera..
- Konstantino, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2That was a bit much.
- Konstantino, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Windows runs as though it were on a native machine on a Mac with BootCamp, nothing's being emulated, so you shouldn't see a decrease in stability.
- u8myfoood, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3the axiotron Modbook people sure will be pissed off if they release this soon...
- justinjstark, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2The solution: Haptic technology. It is possible to make a touch-screen with tactile feedback.
http://www.immersion.com/ - skeen07, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3Twice.
- zweben, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Apple puts most of their product names into their spell checker. In the OS X dictionary app, they even have a dedicated Apple section.
- johnpaul191, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2does it? i would be curious to give it a go. i have a Treo, and when i play with somebody's iPhone (better web browser) i notice i can actually type faster. i realize the Treo is far from a normal keyboard, but the iPhone's is not so bad. i guess it depends on what the device is used for. as a PDA-like device then it should be fine. if it's used like a laptop, then it might get rough. i wonder if your fingers would get numb from the banging on the glass after a lifetime of tactile feedback.
- Kardall, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3notepad & pencils w/ shorthand? :) lol j/k
- moofer, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3yeah, you can wipe an iPhone off on your shirt, and no harm, no foul. It also helps that the screen is glass, so it won't scratch. You gonna do that with a laptop the size of a cafeteria tray? Gonna scratch your glossy plastic screen? Let me know how that works out for you.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2or you could always use *gasp* a bluetooth keyboard!
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2get a console then
- moisie, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1It seems like such a pointless idea. Does the iMac use the Mac Touch as its processor? If so it's useless when not docked and underpowered when it is. If it doesn't then what is the point of docking it? If it's a literal dock then you're losing the extra screen space, having to make the iMac bigger to accommodate it and being left with a huge great hole in your machine.
- fartbuttes, on 01/06/2008, -2/+3i typically refrain from commenting on stuff like this because there's so much of it, but i just have to say: who cares? it's a render. what a waste of time. oh great you imagined up some device that doesn't exist at all and rendered it at work when you were supposed to be bug checking your code. great job. ohh look at this i just imagined a stargate that uses quantum plasma inversion to fold space, check out this awesome render! get bent. it's like a Popular Science article where they write a 5 page feature on some ridiculous technology that won't be anywhere near practical for another 50 years, and Gizmodo panders to this crap all the time. i'm a Mac fan, i use a Mac, i read MacRumors and I don't care in the slightest about rampant speculation and some guy with 3DSM and too much time on his hands. what bothers me particularly are the people who talk as if it actually exists or will exist or matter in any way shape or form, but that's a whole different problem that wouldn't arise if blogs like Gizmodo didn't give this stuff the time of day.
- staticoranges, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1What if they use the other patent they filed for and came up with an Optimus Maximus type keyboard that was tactile, styled like the new keyboard? I think that would be a great keyboard. Have it cover the screen when being stored and I would definitely buy it.
- mikesown, on 01/06/2008, -3/+4The only problem with this is the keyboard. Don't get me wrong -- the iPhone has a cool concept, but the keyboard NEEDS to be tactile. That's not to say Apple has to abandon a multi-touch keyboard, but they NEED to find a way to make it tactile(i.e. make the letters raise up) somehow. Typing on a laptop-esque computer sucks without any kind of tactile feedback!
- Daniel591992, on 01/06/2008, -3/+4...with a stylus, of course..
- morcheeba, on 01/06/2008, -1/+2iphone is in apple's dictionary (use ctrl-apple-D in most applications). The definition is: A combination mobile phone, multimedia player, and wireless internet device from Apple, Inc. Instead of a physical keyboard or keypad, the iphone includes a touchscreen and virtual keyboard and buttons.
I've noticed that the Iphone has lots of brand names in its predictive dictionary. - KielKilla, on 01/06/2008, -3/+4I like the Optimus Tactus concept more.
- xtc46, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1but for those professional designers who have no interest in the tablet would end up paying for something they don't want or need.
- HPCELarry, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1True, but now you've spent money on both an expensive mac system, OSX, and your windows operating system of choice. Thats a little expensive for many of us.
- PaulPinfield, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1I am stuffed with Apple hardware. However, this... just leaves me cold.
Lets just wait and see what is Steveness unveils. - rebotfc, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Well professional designers would surely be the main customer, with a wacom tablet. Furthermore when you think about it, all it is is some kind of dvi + usb port combo.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1that was the main complaint about the iPhone before it came out. and I'm pretty sure those complaints have been laid to rest.
- Ramble, on 01/06/2008, -2/+3He said he's dependant on the PC for games. The iMac has a pretty crappy graphics card and has no room for upgrading.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1This was the main complaint against the iphone BEFORE it came out.
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Seeing as this would be unmarketable to the average business user, I'd say it would be to watch movies on, ect. If they do make this, and I hope they do, It will be marketed as a PMP cross what ever your average teenager needs as a "real" computer. the sort of thing you could wiki the show you were watching on TV(find out who the guest star is and where you've seen them --> noir style movies --> Alfred Hitchcock --> time travel --> flux capacitors) whilst torrenting. and maybe type the occasional report or read pdfs(I ***** hate reading pdfs in landscape, imagine how nice it would be to read it in portrait and scroll through it with two finger, zoom in/ out by pinching/antipinching)
*crosses fingers and prays to Allah, Jehovah and all other imaginary friends.(wouldn't want to leave the real one out) - moofer, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1yeah, enjoy the fingerprints. You'll never see this, it doesn't make any sense.
- ggko, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1Why is everyone looking at this (mockup) thinking OMG! Only a virtual keyboard! Totally unusable!
Look at the side profile of the mockups. Is that? Could it be? USB ports? Just *what* could we use those for? - inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1It's asking if it is a possibility at this year's Macworld.. not if the product could theoretically exist.
Plus.. a PC tablet would require the use of something other than OS X.. =) - starkruzr, on 01/06/2008, -3/+4What is the point of posting this on a website which was founded on tech news, information and speculation?
This is like going to ESPN's boards and saying "Stop it. Stop it. We can all just wait until the Superbowl." Seriously, what are you smoking? -
