- liuping, on 12/16/2007, -9/+138Why did they wait until the iPhone to bring a decent browser to windows mobile? It's version friggin 6 of Window Mobile and they never thought people might want to browse the web in a usable way?
Seriously, iIf Microsoft had no competition, we'd be using DOS version 20 today... - Commodus, on 12/16/2007, -2/+52I tried an HTC Touch a couple of months ago -- Win Mobile's browser is, quite simply, terrible. There should be no excuse as to why a device that can play full-screen video can't at least render a web page accurately.
- PaulPinfield, on 12/16/2007, -28/+75Of course they will target iPhone functionality. But as always with M$, by the time they get it right, the world will have moved on. Vista anyone?...
- colinbrady, on 12/16/2007, -8/+53The nineties called, they want their dollar sign back.
- kalel90, on 12/16/2007, -8/+40You guys did notice it said a desktop version of INTERNET EXPLORER? How is that gonna help things?
- JlmAWP, on 12/16/2007, -4/+36I think the full desktop Internet Explorer on a mobile will increase the actual weight of it.
- astrostream, on 12/16/2007, -13/+43Don't you hate MS for that. they never start anything.
Xbox to go after Sony
Zune to go after Apple.
Media player to go after Realplayer.
IE to go after Netscape.
and now this!!
.....
why don't they focus on making their Windows better, instead of this thing called VISTA? - astrostream, on 12/16/2007, -4/+33I second every word you just said.
- Me1000, on 12/16/2007, -2/+29Well even the full blown desktop version of IE cant render a web page accurately!
- virtualball, on 12/16/2007, -7/+28So wait, they're going to battle Safari....with IE? Hey Microsoft! Wanna race? I'll take my Porsche and you take the Oldsmobile!
- jorange, on 12/16/2007, -4/+23I own a Dash, with Windows Mobile 6. The other day I got to play with an iPhone. I am sorry but MS is so hopelessly behind it isn't amusing.
Don't get me wrong, there is functionality that exists in winmo that isn't on the iphone, but the UI is archaic it negates any positives.
If you ask me Microsoft needs to scrap what they have now and start from scratch with something that focuses on ease of use on a phone. If you don't understand just try finding the calculator on a winmo device. On my dash it takes 10 clicks.... just pathetic. (Yes I did count). - kingofpenguins, on 12/16/2007, -6/+24If it uses Trident for its rendering engine, forget about it.
- streak, on 12/16/2007, -6/+23"The unnamed update will effectively port a desktop version of Internet Explorer."
What a novel idea. "Unnamed" because who knows how many years this will take. MS has defrauded me of enough money already. - colinbrady, on 12/16/2007, -6/+23I try to keep away from IE anyway... I don't need another platform to avoid...
- deadbaby, on 12/16/2007, -14/+30The whole history of Windows CE is a fascinating failure for Microsoft. It seems like they've made nothing but mistakes with it from day one. It's amazing that CE is going on what, 10 years old? and now they're trying to catchup with the iPhone that has been out less than a year? What exactly DO these Microsoft programmers do all day? Making a functional mobile web browser shouldn't take a decade.
- zoziw, on 12/16/2007, -7/+22IE on a cell phone? That sounds like something out of a dream...well, not a good dream.
- jbelkin, on 12/16/2007, -7/+21Hey, there's a shocker - MS suddenly and after seeing what another OS should look like and deciding that they too want features that people actually want to use - maybe they were wrong to spend $4 billion on what their OS looks like so far? Of course, it will take Win users a while to see anything. It took them NINE YEARS to copy the Palm OS so that any WIN mobile version was remotely useable ... it took them 6 YEARS (and $6 BILLION) to copy OSX (and still missing main features) ... so in about 5-7 years, MS should have the IPHONE OS copied about 75% ... though of course, MS will require Apple to stand still like Palm ... otherwise, it's like the Xbox to Wii or Zune to Ipod or Vista to Leopard - a reasonable facsimilie if foisted upon you to use or for those on a budget, but hardly anyone's first real choice ... of course, in 5 years, MS will be running out of money and probably will have to pull the release like Palm's Foleo to save money for marketing the Vista service pack 2 (which will still be delayed anyway).
- djcabanaboycom, on 12/16/2007, -6/+20LOL Vista on a mobile device! Microsoft wouldn't have any revisions if it wasn't for Firefox & Apple. Why do people still buy Microsoft products?
- totorototoro, on 12/16/2007, -4/+16Watching Microsoft is a great way to understand the pitfalls of a monopoly (stagnation, lack of progress and innovation), and the advantages of a competitive marketplace, not just for Windows Mobile, but Windows, IE, Office, etc.
- Darph.Bobo, on 12/16/2007, -6/+18Microsoft always the follower never the leader!
The most pathetic corporate giant known to humanity. - cosmo7, on 12/16/2007, -0/+11WebKit has a good chance of being more popular than Trident, as it is adopted by Google (Android) and Nokia (S60).
Trident is truly awful software. Ask anyone who has to manage crossbrowser web development; it's terrible. - luchid, on 12/16/2007, -2/+13Popularity has nothing to do with quality. The IE engine is the most "popular" and yet it's beyond horrible.
- secrity, on 12/16/2007, -3/+12Will it be available in Zune brown?
- EvilAnimator, on 12/16/2007, -5/+14Windows Mobile is the WORST.
- sandbird, on 12/16/2007, -1/+10Microsoft's problem is that mobile Safari is a game-changer. I have an iPod touch, and everyone I've shown it to has picked up on how to use the interface very quickly. With the iPhone and iPod touch, you actually manipulate and control things with your fingers as if they were objects. No tapping buttons to get to the right link on the page, no extra controls for scrolling, nothing like that. You move things around, flick through lists, and touch the item you want. People are liking that.
Apple isn't going to be the only one with tech like that in the near future. Microsoft isn't just chasing them; they're chasing everyone that builds mobile electronics. Who knows what Google will be bringing to the game when Android is ready for prime time? Android has the potential to really shake things up, since it will run on a lot of different devices.
Microsoft has a big problem, and they know it. - rebotfc, on 12/16/2007, -5/+13Except the iPhone browser already has more 'market-share' than all of the windows mobile devices combined. Mircosoft would be mad not to acknowledge this.
- calgone, on 12/16/2007, -7/+15When I think of Safari, I think of fast, secure internet browsing. When I think of IE, I think of spyware and resource hogging. I know that's not entirely true all the time, but it just seems like maybe MS should start "fresh" on a mobile browser kind of like they did with the Zune and audio playback. Reinvent themselves....
- gquaglia, on 12/16/2007, -1/+9They are talking about the mobile version on the iphone. Read the article next time asshat.
- hellogoodbye, on 12/16/2007, -4/+11Really, who wouldn't want a mini version of Internet Explorer? It's obviousy the most reliable browser out there!
- virtualball, on 12/16/2007, -2/+9This has nothing to do with how many people will use it, it's about how Safari is much more stable and renders much more correctly than IE. I don't think anyone will disagree with me when I say that Safari is MUCH better with standards than IE will ever be.
- aegis9975, on 12/16/2007, -3/+10I'm sure some day that all mobile browsers will be usable as Safari. Copying Apple on the feature set is the practical thing to do. I'm sure Opera has something planned as well.
- mohamedmansour, on 12/16/2007, -7/+13Sure I will name a few ... Microsoft is the king of Software Development and Research, they are pretty known in the world about the stuff they have done, don't you think? Sure copying other peoples "best" feature, is awesome, that is how technology evolves in this current society and age, correct? How else can we improve, we improve upon existing work... Some of the stuff that is worth observing..
* How about Windows - Start Button? this won the crowd of the world
* Microsoft Surface - agumented reality multitouch
* High Scalable SQL Server - For huge organization
* MS Office - Slick design and functionality
* MS Outlook - Innovation
* .NET 2.0
* .NET 3.0 / WPF / WCF / etc ...
* .NET 3.5 ( LINQ , etc ) .. A new way to query any data
* Silverlight (Using a "REAL Programming language" instead of Scripting like Flash)
* Microsoft XNA, a new way to program games, games hasn't been simpler ...
* XBOX 360 Accomplishements, better online play then any other console...
* ETC ....

Every company looks for what people wants best, it is hard for anyone to guess what the consumer needs ... And yes, I have Windows Vista SP1 and Ubuntu Gutsy, as well as a Fedora / Win2k3 server. - bdawg95, on 12/16/2007, -0/+6No, webkit is, Safari isin't: it just uses the webkit standard.
- manitoba98xp, on 12/16/2007, -2/+8WebKit (based on KHTML) is far more lightweight than either Trident (IE's engine) or Gecko (Mozilla's). From what I understand, the iPhone's architecture is also very close to OS X's, more so than WM6's is to Windows'. WebKit is also far more standards-compliant than Trident, and marginally more than Gecko. It's comparable to Presto (Opera's), at least on the desktop. (I've never used Opera Mini.)
Opera Mini, from what I've heard, is a great browser, but please don't compare Mobile Safari to Portable Internet Explorer or its successor. - celkin, on 12/16/2007, -1/+7You used a dollar sign. You lose.
Buried. - Balanced, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5Windows CE had a great environment to grow up in and got away with being lazy. Palm was in a state of slow change and unwillingness to evolve, Apple had withdrawn from the market, and there weren't any other serious competitors. It's easy to dominate a market when no one wants to challenge you.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 12/16/2007, -6/+11great, IE mobile. now my phone can get viruses, too! it seems that microsoft has confused the term "product advancement" with "***** our customers". or maybe not...
- Alex.w, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5Now? Guess you never owned a nokia.. BTW, it's fairly hard to install a virus or malware in IE on a mobile., you'd have to download the .cab and aggree to install it.
- streak, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6"It can't be that bad, now can it?"
Yes, in fact, it is AWFUL. Like many people I'm sure, over the past 8 years or so I've spent a fortune on WM devices like iPaqs and smart phones, with little improvement in the web browsing experience. May I suggest you restrict your comments to subjects you know something about, so as not to waste our time and litter the Internet with such drivel? - theOster, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5can you copy and paste on the Q? couldn't figure it out. and i did install a 3rd party app - "shozu" for uploading images to flickr. maybe this was crapware, but after installing, i couldnt dial out very easily, my txts jwouldn't go through without rebooting, the phone would reboot itself....when i asked my friend (who has a treo with winmob6 on it) if he liked it, he screamed at me "THIS IS EVERYTHING THAT PEOPLE BITCH ABOUT MS IN ONE LITTLE PACKAGE!"
pretty much summed up my opinion - xGOATx, on 12/16/2007, -5/+10Well MS is working on DEEPFISH which currently in a closed beta...but Opera makes the best mobile browsers, which are Opera Mobile and Opera Mini, both which can be used with Pocket Pc.
- jivemasta, on 12/16/2007, -2/+7Not to rain on anybody's microsoft bashing parade, but they have been working on deepfish way before the iphone was even announced. I saw a video of it running about 2 years ago. My beef with it is why is it taking so long to release? Also, anyone that says microsoft can't innovate, obviously isn't very informed on anything past the major products. Let's look at the list:
Photosynth
LINQ
C# and VB
Silverlight (dont say its like flash, it's not even close)
Anything on microsoft's research site. - cleverboy, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6Also adopted by Adobe for Air. Don't forget...
- ronmexico, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4I hear you. I just got an iPhone and had no problems learning how to use it. I had a harder time trying to figure out my RAZR when I got it. A co-worker just got a Blackberry and was complaining about how big the manual was and how he's spending a lot of time figuring out how to use it. The iPhone is such a pleasure to use, I just don't see that from the other phones out there.
- HolyChimp, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4Xbox Live to copy... um.
Damn, I was going to make a big long clever list, but that's all I could think of. Still, they don't JUST copy. If they actually try they make reasonable products. - HolyChimp, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4I agreed with a lot of what you said, but the 360 a copy of the Wii? Aside from the fact that they are after different markets (in my eyes at least) the 360 came out a year earlier!
- PaulPinfield, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4Agreed. I welcome competition in any market because, as you say, it can only be good for us the consumer. Whether that by in the iPod/Zune market or the iPhone/Win Smartphone market...
However, my comment still stands. Bill and his boys tend to be pretty poor at the immediate counter punch.
And, as for the whole iPhone browser thing. Can anyone honestly name a better mobile browser experience than Safari? - MtheoryX, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4Perhaps.
But, perhaps MS will discover how to render margins and padding correctly that same year. - streak, on 12/16/2007, -1/+5If you believe the webshare statistics, does the reason really matter? Anecdotally, my previous smart phone was a Treo 750 (WM). Before that it was an HTC 8525 (WM). I hung them all up for an iPhone, because Mobile Safari works great, even over 2.5G EDGE. Mobile Mail also perfectly renders HTML e-mail and provides push e-mail at no extra charge. In the long run, switching to the iPhone will be free, because the iPhone unlimited data plan is half the price of what AT&T and Verizon charge for all other smart phones they sell. The fact that I'm now getting my money's worth from these fees, using the Internet perhaps 10X as much as before, makes me feel very satisfied with the switch.
